...Topsy Turvey!...
The Red Diamond Vulcan Cup soccer tournament is in the
Magic City this weekend. This fabulous event brings 6,000 players,
coaches, fans and parents to Birmingham for top level competition.
Sorry about the weather folks. Not a great day to be outdoors. Our
topsy-turvy March weather continues…
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO: We were starting to pay attention to
model output that showed an Arctic airmass and a powerful low pressure
system in the Gulf of Mexico four days out. The storm would go onto
become one of historic proportions, known as the Storm of the Century
or the March 1993 Superstorm. While nothing like that one, this storm
system has been an interesting one also.
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Spring forward tonight. Don't
forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed tonight
as we go back into Dsylight Saving Time early again this year under
the Congressional mandate.
A RAW DAY: It is hard to call a Saturday that has snow
involved "miserable," at least for snow lovers. By the time you read
this, Birmingham's snowless streak may have come to an end. It will
be mostly cloudy this morning with a cold northwest wind and a few
flakes exiting eastern sections. Skies will clear later this morning,
but temps will have a hard time getting out of the 30s despite the
sunshine. That's certainly qualifies as raw. By tomorrow morning
lows will be in the upper 20s.
BETTER TOMORROW: After that cold start tomorrow, things
will warm up nicely into the upper 50s by afternoon. That will signal
the beginning of a warm up that will continue into most of next week.
By early in the week, another upper level disturbance will be
meandering our way from Texas. It will bring a chance of showers on
Tuesday and Tuesday night as it heads east. Temperatures will be warm
enough to support all rain. High pressure will move across the area
on Wednesday, with fine weather expected. By Thursday, a stronger and
more interesting system will move our way, spinning up a complex low
pressure system. We should get rain and storms, but places like
Memphis might get another good snowstorm. North Alabama could be on
the borderline again as the system lifts out and colder air fills in
behind it.
ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Brinkley, Arkansas was directly in
the path of an F4 tornado during the evening hours. The twister
destroyed eight hundred buildings and homes in the town. Several
entire families were killed. Forty nine total fatalities were
attributed to the twister along its fifteen mile path. Injuries
numbered over six hundred. At least six other major tornadoes touched
down in Arkansas that day, killing an additional eighteen people. I
drove from Little Rock to Alexandria, Louisiana on Thursday night,
taking mostly back roads, passing through little towns like Hope and
Evening Shade. J.B. commented on the phone that those places had all
been hit by famous tornadoes. I told him that I think every town in
Arkansas has been hit by a major tornado. It is definitely part of
Dixie Tornado Alley.
