SNOW STARTS LATE TONIGHT: I am convinced more than ever that the
prospects of snow is far more exciting in Alabama than any college
football game, including the Alabama/Auburn game.
To our west, very heavy snow has fallen across parts of Arkansas. The
overall storm system is moving east and rain is expected to change to
snow across North Alabama later tonight with some flurries deep into
Central Alabama by tomorrow morning.
Here is a word-by-word analysis that James Spann posted on the ABC
33/40 blog this afternoon:
"Around 1 inch of snow for the I-20 corridor, including Birmingham,
Tuscaloosa and Anniston. This will be mainly on grassy areas. The
roads will be wet, but travel problems not expected. 1 to 3 inches of
snow, mainly in grassy areas, along and north of US-278, which is from
Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. There could be some icy spots on
bridges in this area late tonight, but the roads will most likely
remain only wet because of the relatively warm soil. The exception
could be some of the high terrain locations over NE Alabama, where a
few roads could become snow covered. A dusting of snow all the way
down to US-280 or from Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Opelika. No
travel problems along US-280. There could even be a little thundersnow
somewhere in all of this."
LITTLE ROCK: We picked Little Rock today because the NWS has been
busy as a snow blower issuing various Winter Storm Warnings and
Advisories and they were all timely. There was thundersnow at
Whitehall, Arkansas. Some other snow depths all in Arkansas:
2 inches at Pulaski, 12 miles west of Little Rock
9 inches, Paris
10 inches, Evening Shade and Booneville
15 inches, Mt. George
There were reports of numerous trees coming down because of the heavy
snow load.
Elsewhere, a possible tornado this morning near Tampa. A Tornado
Watch was in effect for much of North Florida this morning and
extended south to Central Florida this afternoon. The winter weather
problem is going to affect a vast zone from here in the South
northeastward through Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and even into
Western New York State. As much as 6 to 12 inches expected in
Louisville and about 6 inches in Memphis.
GRAVITY WAVE: A vast rain area across Alabama this morning with
everybody getting rain and some people over 1 inch. After the rain
moved on to the east, a gravity wave set up causing high wind after
the rain stops. Over North Chilton County, numerous trees were
uprooted and some structural damage to buildings.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I did not hear thunder last night, but
my little pal did. Sometimes I think Molly can hear thunder as far
away as Mobile. At some point during the night, she crawled out of her
warm spot on our king-sized bed, went into the large clothes closet
and backed into a corner. I finally found her with only her head
sticking out from under the clothing. Life goes on.....
