...Showers and Storms Ahead...

A busy weekend here in Alabama with lots of events. And the weather
is a little on the dicey side, so you will want to monitor the latest
forecasts and weather conditions through the weekend.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: A weakening band of showers and storms move into
western sections of the state this morning. It died along a line from
Decatur to Aliceville by late morning. The line was in advance of a
weak cold front that was pushing into Northwest Alabama. The front
will settle into the state, but probably will not make much more
progress. Meanwhile, instabilities will be on the increase through
the afternoon as periodic sunshine warms temperatures into the upper
70s along with dewpoints in the low 60s. CAPE values will exceed 1500
j/kg as the airmass becomes unstable this afternoon across Central
Alabama. This means some of the storms could be strong to even
severe, although significant severe weather is not anticipated. Most
of the activity should be west of I-65, I believe. This bodes well
for this afternoon's activities at Talladega. The storms should
diminish this evening and the front should settle into the Tennessee
Valley.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Expect a mostly cloudy, slightly muggy start to the
day on Sunday with mild temperatures in the 60s. An approaching upper
level disturbance will be swinging our way out of the southwest. As
it does, moisture levels will be on the increase, especially over
western sections. Showers and storms will break out in the unstable
air, and they will be fairly numerous ahead of a stronger cold front.
The Storm Prediction Center has almost all of Central and North
Alabama outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather on Sunday, with
the main threats being damaging winds and large hail. We will have to
watch the situation carefully, especially with all of the fans at
Talladega and folks out downtown at the Magic City Art Connection.
Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 70s. The activity should sweep
into Georgia during the evening hours.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will feature breezy and cooler
conditions. Tuesday will start off in the refreshing 40s. Wednesday
will be nearly perfect. Moisture levels will start to return on
Thursday with showers possible again by Friday.

A DEADLY REMINDER: On this date two years ago, two men
died instantly when the flagpole they were setting up atop their RV at
the Talladega Superspeedway was blown by a wind gust into power lines.

THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER: A major disaster occurred on
this date in 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine
as flawed Soviet reactor designed combined with serious mistakes in
judgment by the plant operators. The result was an explosion and fire
that resulted in a release of about 5 percent of the reactor core.
Most of the release was composed of dust and debris near the site.
Lighter materials were carried by the wind over parts of the Ukraine,
Belarus, Russia and even to parts of Scandinavia and Europe. Thirty
people died as a result of the accident, and extreme increases in
thyroid cancers have been observed downwind of the site. If the wind
had been westerly, the release would have targeted the city of Kiev,
which undoubtedly would have resulted in many more fatalities.
Chernobyl is the only case where radiation related deaths have
occurred as the result of an accident at a commercial nuclear power
site.

This is a weekend of outdoor activity here in Central Alabama. The
Magic City Art Connection is in Linn Park today and tomorrow, starting
at 10 a.m. each day. This is one of the finest juried art shows in
the country, so make sure that you get downtown to enjoy it. For
baseball fans, the Barons, Samford and UAB all have homestands this
weekend. There is a wildflower hike today at Ruffner Mountain Nature
Center. And something is going on at Talladega, but it escapes me for
the moment...

OH YEAH! The Aaron's Dream Weekend! That's it! Just one of the
biggest weekends in racing. Thousands of fans will flock to the
world's fastest speedway to enjoy the Aaron's 312 today. Then
tomorrow, at 1 p.m., the flag will drop on the
Aarons 499 at 1 p.m. CDT. Weather will be
important for all these events, but the good news is that it should
not be a washout at any event.

WEEKEND WEATHER: A cold front over westhern Tennessee and northern
Mississippi is pushing an area of showers and storms into West Alabama
this morning. The front and an outflow boundary will serve as foci
for more showers and storms with the heating of the day. Some of the
storms could be strong with lots of lightning, gusty winds and smal
hail.

Highs will make the middle to upper 70s. Tonight should be mostly dry
and mild. Tomorrow will feature th ebest chance for rain and storms
west of I-65 during the day. Storms could be strong to severe again
tomorrow. Then, storms will spread across the entire area during the
evening ahead of the main cold front.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The front will be south of Birmingham by Monday
morning, and areas of South Central Alabama will see showers through
part of the morning. Skies will clear during the day, with a
refreshing northwest breeze and highs in the 60s. By Tuesday morning,
it will feel really refreshing, with morning lows in the 40s.
Tuesday will feature plenty of sunshine with highs in the lower 70s.
By Wednesday, nearly perfect conditions will prevail with lots of
sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. Moisture levels will be
increasing by Thursday, with a chance of showers returning by late
Thursday into Friday. It looks like we will have a good chance of
showers and storms on Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1884: Tornadoes were hard to capture on early cameras
with their hard to use glass plate negatives. The first recorded
photograph of a tornado was taken on this date by A.A. Adams near
Garnett, Kansas. Adams reportedly sold many copies of the photo as a
stereoscopic set that could be viewed with a special viewer. Adams
would be remembered as the "first man ever to photograph a cyclone."
The weak tornado was probably actually dissipating as the photograph
was made.

DISCUSSING ALABAMA WEATHER: There is a lot to cover because we have
a changeable situation over the next few days. It involves showers and
thunderstorms occurring mainly Saturday and Sunday. Some of those
could linger into morning drive on Monday, but we believe most will be
out of here before you go to work or school. Then look for an
unseasonably chilly morning Tuesday. But, first things first.

The weekend showers and storms will be more numerous than we thought
earlier in the week, but they will occur on two occasions. We could
see a few isolated ones later this afternoon and this evening. Showers
and thunderstorms on Saturday will be scattered, but any one spot does
have a good chance of getting wet. Most of those may be during the
morning and midday. A cold front will push into this general area, but
pretty much dissipate.

A stronger front will move into NW Alabama on Sunday and move through
the state by Monday morning. This is going to set off a more
significant round of showers and storms. A few of those could be
strong. We think that the better chance of a thunderstorm on Sunday
will be from about noon until past midnight. With all of these showers
and storms added together, the projected rain amount for this part of
Central Alabama is around 1 inch. As you know, that can vary greatly
with thunderstorms involved.

THE TUESDAY MORNING CHILL: We are still looking for a low of 42 when
you go out to snatch the paper Tuesday morning. This is an average low
across Central Alabama. A high-pressure area will be centered right
over us, so there will be a temperature inversion. Do not be surprised
at all to hear some low temperatures around 36 to 38 in the
traditional colder spots in North and Central Alabama. However, the
old thermometer will rebound quickly reaching 70 during the afternoon.

WAR ZONE WEATHER: As I did last year during the hot season, I tried
to update Iraqi weather at least once a week. It is almost always dry,
but it is very hot in summer. At 9:00 tonight (yes, it is already past
9:00 there), it was 90 degrees in Baghdad. The projected high is 105
for both Saturday and Sunday.

ODDS AND ENDS: A risk of severe weather continues this afternoon and
tonight all the way from South Texas to Northern Michigan…heavy rain
overnight in those storms, where it was not needed, included 4.71
inches at Waterloo, Iowa and over 2 inches at Ft. Dodge and
Marshalltown…cold temperatures this morning 6 below at Alert at the
north tip of Canada, 34 in Old Crow, Yukon, 5 in Wainwright, Alaska,
11 in Worland, Wyoming and 84 below at Vostok, Antarctica…they expect
95 below at midweek.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Housecleaning time is a tense situation
for my little 9-pound pal, Little Miss Molly. When the mops come out
and the vacuum cleaner cranks up, she walks many steps trying to stay
out of the way. If the vacuum cleaner is running, that is the
equivalent of hearing thunder. She looks me up. If I am in my office,
she either crouches down under my desk or asks me to let her sit on my
desk. I much prefer her on my desk, because her swishing tail will
completely clean the keyboard on my MAC computer and she gets to look
out the window. Life goes on.....

...Unsettled Weekend Weather...

WEEKEND SHOWERS: A pool of moist, unstable air will hang over Alabama
through the weekend, meaning the chance of a few raindrops from time
to time. Today, the best chance of showers will come during the
afternoon and evening hours, when the air is most unstable. There
isn't much in the way of good upper air dynamics, so we expect the
showers to be rather widely spaced, and rainfall amounts to be light
and spotty.

A surface front will drift down into North Alabama tomorrow, and
accordingly we will maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms.
The best coverage will most likely come north of I-20, but even there
the day should be a complete wash-out. Some drier air might try to
slip into the northern half of the state tomorrow night, but that
front will move northward on Sunday in response to a new, stronger
system west of Alabama. This will keep us in the moist air, and we
will have to maintain the chance of scattered showers and storms on
Sunday. It looks like the best coverage of showers and storms will
come Sunday night with a strong cold front and good upper air support.
In fact, we might even have a few strong to severe thunderstorms
Sunday night; at this point it looks like the best chance of strong
storms will come from about 6:00 p.m. Sunday through 3:00 a.m. Monday.

A COOL CHANGE: The rain will end during the pre-dawn hours Monday, and
it will be followed by noticeably cooler air. With a clearing sky on
Monday, the high will be only in the mid 60s. Then, by daybreak
Tuesday, we are forecasting lows in the 40 to 45 degree range across
North Alabama. We might even hear of upper 30s in some of the colder
valleys early Tuesday.

TALLADEGA RACE WEEKEND: The chance of a shower or thunderstorm at the
Talladega Superspeedway tomorrow and Sunday is about one in three;
afternoon temperatures will peak in the 77 to 80 degree range, and
there should be a few intervals of sunshine. Fans headed home Sunday
night need to understand there could be some strong to severe storms
around here, especially after 6:00 p.m.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 3 to 5 hours of sunshine tomorrow and
Sunday, and there will be a few scattered showers and storms along the
coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores. The sea water temperature is
generally in the mid 70s.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Severe storms last night produced 21 reports
of large hail across parts of Kansas and Nebraska. Hottest place in
the nation yesterday was Wink, Texas with a high of 100 degrees. The
warmest place in Alabama was Dothan with 85 degrees; Huntsville
reported 83, while the high in Birmingham was 80.

ALABAMA DISCUSSION: The weekend weather across Alabama does not look
as bright as it did earlier, as we expect showers and thunderstorms to
occur both Saturday and Sunday. A cold front will be advancing toward
Alabama on Sunday. This will increase the number of showers and
thunderstorms later in the day Sunday and on Sunday night. By Monday
morning, the front should be in NW Florida and we will see a
noticeable change to cooler weather. In fact, the high on Monday
should not get out of the 60s. This is not going to be a long drawn
out cool spell. Tuesday morning will clearly be our coolest time with
lows dropping into the 40s over a large part of North and Central
Alabama.

We cannot rule out some upper 30s Tuesday morning in the
traditionally colder North and Central Alabama valleys, especially in
places like Valley Head, Bridgeport, Ft. Payne, Hamilton and Pinson,
just to name a few.

This, of course, is race weekend at Talladega. Wish we could promise
sparkling dry weather, but that is not the case. In any event, it will
not be an all-day rain on either day.

THE CENTRAL ALABAMA RAIN SITUATION: The rain deficit for 2008 is now
1.19 inches at Birmingham Airport. We should get a decent amount of
rain over the weekend. Some places will get as much as 3/4 inch.

SCANNING ALL DIRECTIONS: Leadville, up in the Colorado Rockies, will
get 1 to 3 inches of snow tonight along with thunder and lightning and
a low near 15…Ogden, in North Utah, expecting 2 inches…in Yellowstone
National Park 3 to 5 inches of new snow is expected with a low in the
teens…bad weather in the Central and Southern Plains yesterday…
numerous reports of very large hail from North Texas to Nebraska,
especially over North Texas…at one time, hail golf ball to baseball
size covered I-20 near Gordon, Texas with winds gusting to 60 and 70
mph…that will break your windshield in no time flat…over 3.50 inches
of rain at Ft. Worth/Alliance Airport and at McKinney, Texas…Tulsa got
2.74 inches…cold temperatures this morning 16 at Truckee, California
and 12 at Savoonga, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Driving across Deerfoot Parkway several
times lately, it is amazing how the countryside greened up so quickly…
lush greenery everywhere. I love huge water oak trees and one of my
favourites is in an open pasture south of Springville west of US-11…I
just have to get out my first ever digital camera, my Christmas
present, and get busy…have not even shot a picture of Little Miss
Molly with it. That little girl has variable habits. Sometimes she
gets up very early; at other times she sleeps until 10:00. At other
times, she gets up and immediately crawls in bed again with our
granddaughter. Walking with her lately has been rather routine. Her
little Yorkie boyfriend comes down the street in front of our house
every afternoon and anxiously looks for Molly just like she does when
walking behind his house on the walking track. They are as close pals
as two dogs can get. Life goes on.....

...Showers Return This Weekend...

MOISTURE LEVELS SLOWLY INCREASING: Dewpoints are creeping upward, and
this will ultimately lead to a chance of showers and thunderstorms for
Alabama. However, today promises to be another warm, dry day with a
good supply of sunshine and a high in the low to mid 80s again. You
will note some scattered cumulus clouds in the sky this afternoon, but
most communities will remain dry. A weak impulse could trigger a few
isolated showers tonight, but at this moment the chance looks so small
we won't mention it in our formal forecast package.
We will mention a chance of widely scattered showers tomorrow
afternoon as moisture and instability values continue to rise. But,
the rain tomorrow should not be especially widespread or heavy.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? We will have two surface fronts to deal with;
the first one will stall out somewhere around the Tennessee Valley
Saturday; this will bring a chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms to Alabama, with the most numerous ones coming north of
I-20. The day won't be a wash-out, and at this time we don't expect
any significant threat of severe storms.

A stronger front with good upper air support is due in here Sunday
night. For the daytime hours Sunday, we will maintain the chance of
scattered showers and storms, but they should become more numerous at
night with the front. There might even be a few strong thunderstorms
involved. Then, the showers and storms should move out during the pre-
dawn hours Monday, followed
by a chance to noticeably cooler weather early next week. Looks like
we won't make it out of the 60s Monday, and early morning temperatures
in the 40s are likely Tuesday and Wednesday.

LETS GO RACING: The chance of a shower or thunderstorm at the
Talledega Superspeedway Saturday and Sunday is about one in three.
Otherwise, there will be intervals of sunshine with a high both days
between 78 and 81.

AT THE BEACH: There will be a few widely scattered showers and
thunderstorms along the central Gulf coast tomorrow through Sunday,
but on the positive side expect about 3 to 5 hours of sunshine each
day. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 70s on the immediate coast,
with mid 80s likely for inland areas. A check of the sea water
temperature last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab showed 74
degrees. That figure should reach 80 by the first of June, when
hurricane season opens.

THE STORMS OF TEXAS: Severe thunderstorms in Texas late yesterday
produced hail the size of softballs near Lamesa. A possible tornado
touched down near Gordon, Texas (west of Fort Worth), producing some
structural damage. Flash flooding was responsible for some impassable
roads in Stephenville.

THE ALABAMA STORY: No big temperature changes in Alabama over the
next several days. Across the central part of the state, highs will be
in the lower 80s. However, they will back off to the upper 70s
Saturday, Sunday and Monday due to more cloudiness in the area and a
chance of some showers and thunderstorms.

By far, there is more interest in the shower and thunderstorm
situation than the temperatures. We look for dry weather again
tomorrow and most of Friday. Some widely scattered showers or
thunderstorms will arrive either late Friday afternoon or Friday
night. Over the weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be
scattered showers and thunderstorms. On each day, there should be
around a 1 in 3 chance of any one location getting wet. Probably the
better chance of all will be Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. This
is due to a cold front expected to move into the area by next Monday.
This is race weekend at the Talladega racetrack, so this discussion
and our day-by-day forecast also pertains to Talladega.

SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: We think Alabama will be okay, even when
the widely scattered thunderstorms arrive. A risk of severe weather
continues this afternoon and overnight from SW Texas northward all the
way to SW South Dakota and east as far as Western Arkansas. This
includes an enhanced Moderate Risk over NW Texas and SW Oklahoma.
Tomorrow the risk shifts westward a bit and extends from South Texas
all the way to Nebraska and Iowa. An Enhanced Moderate Risk is
outlined for tomorrow for much of Kansas and SE Nebraska, including
Wichita, Topeka, Omaha and Lincoln. (Lincoln is one of the best laid
out cities you will ever see.)

BAGHDAD AND BIRMINGHAM: The average annual rain amount for Baghdad
is a paltry 6.10 inches…Birmingham, by comparison, gets 54 inches. The
average daily high temperature in July and August is 109 in Baghdad
and about 91 in Birmingham.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: It was a real irony on May 5, 2002, when a
tornado hit the small town of Happy, Texas…a good warning was in
effect and only 2 people were killed, but it made everybody in Happy
unhappy…there are occasional weather facts that pique my interest to a
maximum…one of those was the 1880 tornado that sucked a 39-foot well
dry in Marshall, Missouri…so hard for me to believe that…even if the
tornado was moving only 25 mph, it would only take about 2 seconds to
cross that well…oh, well…Natchez, Mississippi, settled by the French
in 1716, is still having problems with the mighty Mississippi…the
population density for Alaska is only 1 person per square mile, but in
Washington, DC, 9,359.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has only been in
trouble a few times since she arrived five years ago. Her first
transgression was the complete papering of the master bedroom with the
reserve supply of toilet paper…could not even walk on the carpet—had
to walk on paper…one day she escaped out the door and took off up the
street like she was on the Autobahn. She happened to see another small
dog looking out a window, screeched to a halt and went to the window
to talk to the little fellow. I grabbed her. She escaped out back a
few weeks ago and was going up the walking track at 80 mph. My
granddaughter, who can run 100 mph, was not gaining on her and only
Molly's urgent need for a quick bathroom stop let us catch her…today
for the first time ever, she snitched a steak bone out of the garbage
pail, took it to the master bedroom and was having a ball. She frowned
greatly when I seized it. Life goes on......

...A Preview Of Summer...

AFTERNOONS REMAIN WARM: Temperatures will continue to run about 6 to
10 degrees above average values for mid-April for the next few days,
with most communities reaching the low to mid 80s, giving us a real
preview of summer. Today's weather will feature a good supply of
sunshine with just a few fair weather cumulus clouds around this
afternoon.

MOISTURE LEVELS SLOWLY RISE: Dewpoints will increase gradually through
the end of the week and the weekend, and a few isolated showers could
show up as early as late tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night. Then,
we will insert a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the
forecast Friday through Sunday as a cold front stalls out just north
of Alabama.

RACE WEEKEND FORECAST: At this point the chance of rain looks
relatively small at the Talladega Superspeedway Friday for qualifying;
just a few isolated showers with a high in the low 80s. Then, for the
Aarons 312 Saturday and the Aarons 499 Sunday, the chance of a shower
or storm at the track is about one in three.

Otherwise, there will be intervals of sunshine over the weekend with
afternoon high temperatures generally between 79 and 82 degrees. We
don't expect a wash-out or any severe weather.

NEXT WEEK: The latest computer model data now shows a strong upper
trough approaching Alabama early next week; this will drive a
significant cold front through here late Sunday night or Monday, with
a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by noticeably
cooler air. Looks like we could drop down into the 40s by early
Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

DID YOU KNOW? The Enhanced Fujita Scale, or EF Scale, is the scale for
rating the strength of tornadoes in the United States estimated via
the damage they cause. Implemented in place of the Fujita scale
introduced in 1971, it began operational use on February 1, 2007. The
scale has the same basic design as the original Fujita scale, six
categories from zero to five representing increasing degrees of
damage. It was revised to reflect better examinations of tornado
damage surveys, so as to align wind speeds more closely with
associated storm damage. Better standardizing and elucidating what was
previously subjective and ambiguous, it also adds more types of
structures as well as vegetation, expands degrees of damage, and
better accounts for variables such as differences in construction
quality.

HEATING UP: Yesterday was the warmest day so far this year for a
number of Alabama communities. Warmest spots were Tuscaloosa and
Mobile with a summer-like 87 degrees. The official high for Birmingham
was 84; the last time we had a high of 84 or warmer was back on
October 18, 2007. To the west, Dallas/Fort Worth soared to 89, and the
hottest spot in the nation was Laredo, Texas with 98 degrees. We note
the weather isn't warming up everywhere; the high yesterday in Great
Falls, Montana was only 43; their forecast high today is 38 degrees
with a chilly north wind.

================================================

WARM AFTERNOONS: The nights and early mornings have been fairly
cool, but the afternoons are warming up and that will be the story for
the rest of the week. Look for high temperatures in the lower 80s
through Thursday and near 80 from Friday over the weekend. The reason
the latter temperatures are a bit lower is because of an increase in
clouds and introducing a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms
into the picture starting Friday afternoon.

This is a big NASCAR weekend at the Talladega racetrack. This does
not look like a major rain event, but there will be a chance of a
shower or thunderstorm Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday.

Yesterday, temperatures were as warm as 84 in Montgomery and 85 in
Mobile. With dry air (lower dew points), temperatures early this
morning included 42 at Muscadine, 43 at Ft. Payne Airport and 44 at
Black Creek and Crossville. At Black Creek, the overnight low has been
41 or under on 9 of the last 11 mornings.

2008 RAIN SCORECARD: We were all jumping with joy at the fairly
frequent showers and thunderstorms we had in past weeks, but they seem
fewer in number now. We hate to see that happen, because parts of
Alabama are already developing a worrisome rain deficiency for 2008.
Despite this, the drought has improved in most sections. Here is a
list of 2008 so far:

0.89 deficit, Birmingham Airport
5.55 deficit, Huntsville
4.88 deficit, Montgomery Dannelly Field
2.10 excess, Mobile Regional Airport
5.91 deficit, Muscle Shoals
4.57 deficit, Tuscaloosa

SEVERE WEATHER PICTURE: We believe that Alabama will escape any
threat of severe weather with the thunderstorms in the forecast Friday
and over the weekend. The ingredients are not there (at least at this
time) for a severe threat. The parent low-pressure area will be all
the way up to Minneapolis by Friday morning. There is a threat of
severe weather from the Texas Panhandle east across South Oklahoma,
most of Arkansas, extreme NW Mississippi and the Memphis area for this
afternoon and tonight. Tomorrow the severe threat shifts westward to
include Central and West Texas, northward all the way to Western South
Dakota.

THREE-DOT STUFF: There is a small town in the mountains of Northern
New Mexico called Chama. It is often the cold spot for New Mexico and
they have a narrow gauge railroad…Louisiana is losing 25 square miles
of delta wetlands each year from hurricanes and storm surge…it has
been said by the experts that it is just a matter of time until a
tornado hits a sports venue with thousands of fans in place with
disastrous results…it came very close on December 14, 1987 when a
tornado passed only ¼ mile from Southland Greyhound Track in West
Memphis where 7,000 people were gathered.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What a story in the Birmingham News
yesterday morning. A dog escaped while at a rest stop in Nevada and
weeks later showed up at home after having to walk 80 miles. The
Alaskan Husky had to cross two mountain ranges to get home. On the
way, he had encountered a skunk and he did not smell good…Little Miss
Molly had one of the most exciting walks (runs) yesterday since we
have had her. Four kids and three dogs raced the entire length of the
walking track. It looked like an army coming and Little Miss Molly
tried to tackle one of the dogs that was much larger. She actually ran
faster than the others. Seems like she can run as fast as a cheetah.
Life goes on......

...Warm Spring Weather Continues...

GORGEOUS SPRING WEATHER: Wonderful weather continues through mid-week,
with mostly sunny warm afternoons and clear pleasant nights. Each
afternoon, temperatures will rise into the 80 to 83 degree range for
most Alabama communities, with a few spots across West Alabama
reaching the mid 80s. While low level moisture levels will be on the
increase, warm air aloft should keep the airmass capped off, and the
chance of an afternoon shower will remain very low through Thursday.

We will mention a chance of widely scattered, mainly afternoon and
evening showers and thunderstorms Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with a
weak front approaching from the north. But, there is very little upper
support for that front, and it should dissipate somewhere around the
Alabama/Tennessee border over the weekend. So, at this time we don't
expect any really heavy rain or a significant chance of severe
weather. Just keep in mind a few showers will be around in scattered
spots this weekend. Otherwise, there will be intervals of sunshine
with highs remaining in the low 80s.

RACE WEEKEND: For NASCAR fans coming in for this week's activities at
the Talladega Superspeedway, we expect a mix of sun and clouds Friday
through Sunday with afternoon highs between 79 and 82. The chance of a
shower specifically at the track Saturday and Sunday is about one in
four, and at this point it doesn't look like rain will be much of an
issue.

NEXT WEEK: There is increasing confidence in the idea of an upper air
low moving into the Deep South next week; if that scenario is correct
then we can expect an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms by Tuesday and Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A mid-afternoon F2 tornado struck the small
northeast Alabama town of Rainsville in DeKalb County without warning,
injuring 12 people. Over 30 homes were damaged by the twister and 50
buildings in the community received damage, including the city and
police and fire stations. No tornado warning was in effect at the time
of the storm since NWS

Doppler radar did not show significant signs of storm rotation.
Ironically, a more powerful Doppler radar was being prepared for
installation, very near the location of the tornado (the system is now
in service at Hytop, east of Huntsville).

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Snow flakes that fell across the Vancouver
region of western Canada Friday night and Saturday represent the
latest snowfall ever on record. At its peak, the storm dumped one inch
of snow at the Vancouver International Airport. Hottest spot in the
nation yesterday was Laredo, Texas with 98 degrees. A nearly
stationary upper low dumped heavy rain on parts of the mid-Atlantic
coast region; the total at Richmond, VA was 2.08", while Norfolk, VA
reported 1.89".

AFTERNOONS GETTING WARMER: Even with highs in the lower 80s in the
next several days, the humidity is relatively low, so it is going to
be a comfortable time in Alabama through most of next weekend.
Wednesday will probably be our warmest day. We are shooting for a high
of 83 as an average across Central Alabama, but some West Alabama
locations may aim at around 86 or 87.

THE RAIN SITUATION: When is the last time you have seen the rain
deficiency for Birmingham at less than one inch? As of this morning,
the deficiency was 0.74 of an inch. I do not remember it being that
low even for most of last year. That part of the drought has greatly
eased and so have reservoir levels in many areas. Topsoil moisture
seems to be in decent shape, but the deeper soil is something else as
well as underground water tables. That takes much longer to correct.
We do not see much rain in our forecast through the rest of the week.
In fact, we do not even mention any until some widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon and Friday night. A cold
front will be moving down into Alabama Saturday, so our better chance
of showers and storms will probably be at sometime Saturday and
Saturday night. Even then it will not be an all-day rain event by any
means. That same forecast is applicable to the Talladega area for the
big race weekend.

FROST SEASON OVER? Most likely. It was 31 in Birmingham on this date
in 1953 and we have had a few examples of below freezing the last week
of April. Another killing frost would be virtually unheard of.

THREE-DOT STUFF: Some bad wildfires in New Mexico SE of Albuquerque…
it is getting that time of year…one of the deepest snow amounts in the
USA this morning was 292 inches at Swift Creek, Washington in the
mountains…lower 48 snow cover now down to 13%…1 to 2 feet of new snow
over the weekend in the mountains of West Montana and 13 inches at
Great Falls Airport…Paradise Ranger Station still has 215 inches in
Washington State on the slopes of Mt. Rainier…40 was one of the cooler
temperatures in Alabama this morning at Black Creek…coldest in the USA
was 8 at Great Falls, Montana…major flooding continues around
Vicksburg where the mighty Mississippi was 9 feet above flood stage…
how would you like to be at Vostok, Antarctica today where the
temperature was 95 below zero and a sustained wind of 12 mph? That
means the old wind chill was 137 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Speaking before the Birmingham Rotary
Club East Friday, Dr. David Hayes, a veterinarian, told the story of a
child losing his 14-year old Golden Retriever. Everyone was very upset
except the child. When quizzed, the lad this wonderful explanation:
"People have to spend a whole lot of years learning how to be kind and
gentle. Dogs are born that way, so they do not have to live as long."
Pretty clever and thanks to Glenn Slye for passing along that tidbit…
Little Miss Molly had such a busy weekend, that she slept until 10:30
this morning—almost unheard of. Our granddaughter and her two babies
from Russellville were here over the weekend. One time on Sunday, 7
people came walking in the door at the same time. Little Miss Molly
became frantic, because she thinks it is her mandate to greet each
person individually. She was running all around the room putting her
paws on everyone's leg with her tail wagging like a buzz saw and
jumping all around. Life goes on. Impossible to have a dull moment
with that delightful little girl......

...Another Gorgeous Day...

NICE START: Everyone is enjoying a very comfortable morning on this
April Monday. Temperatures overnight dropped into the 40s and 50s in
all locations. Get ready for another nearly perfect, if not
absolutely perfect day across Alabama. The weekend was gorgeous, with
lots of sunshine and highs mostly in the 70s. A few spots were able
to reach 80F on Sunday. 80s will be common over the next couple of
days. Model guidance is prognosticating highs in the 70s, but the
setup should be conducive for temps to exceed the predicted readings
the next few days. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy today
and tomorrow across the area. Conditions will remain dry, with the
exception of the possibility of a shower late Tuesday night as a
weakening cold front approaches. But high pressure should remain in
control until then.

RAIN CHANCES? That weakening front will drift into the Tennessee
Valley on Wednesday, but rain chances will be diminishing the further
southeast you go. In the I-20/59 corridor, we will call for only
slight chances of showers or storms. Thursday looks to have better
chances of showers and storms as an upper level disturbance swings
across the area. Lots of moisture will be in place, so if this
happens, everything could come together for a decent rain event with
some storms thrown in. Keep your fingers crossed, as some spots could
see an inch of rain. Then, a more progressive large scale upper
trough will push a stronger front toward Alabama. This means
increasing chances for rain and storms Friday night.

RACING WEEKEND: Big weekend ahead here in Alabama. The Magic City
Art Connection will be downtown and NASCAR will be at Talladega.
While we need the rain, let's hope the events stay dry. By Saturday
morning, the rain and storms should be exiting to the east with
rapidly improving conditions. Saturday afternoon looks dry and Sunday
looks perfect, with only the possibility of a little wraparound
stratocumulus. Only the smallest chance of a shower.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK: As we look out into the future, we seem to be
headed into a rather benign weather pattern as we exit April and head
into may.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: One reason that officials of the U.S. Weather
Bureau used the fear of public panic as one of their main reasons for
not issuing tornado forecasts for years. When tornado forecasts began
being issued in 1952, the predicted widespread panic did not happen.
There were isolated reports of people reacting out of fear of the
official warnings, but the incidents were rare. One did happen on
this date, however, as a woman working in a store in Altus, Oklahoma
jumped in her car upon hearing a tornado warning. Her car slid off
into a ditch during a bad rainstorm and she was killed.

...What are you Doing?...

What are you doing? If you are reading this, it had better be on your
Blackberry at the Barber Motorsports Park. Or on a baseball diamond
or in a park. The weather is fine! Get out and enjoy it…

PERFECT WEATHER: We continue our Perfect Weather Warning for this
afternoon across Central Alabama. We have posted a Perfect Weather
Watch for Monday, and it is likely to be upgraded to a Warning on the
morning package. Lots of sunshine and mild temperatures in the 70s
today. Looks for a low near 50 tonight with clear and calm
conditions. Then tomorrow will be superb, with partly cloudy skies,
warm readings between 78-80 and a light northerly wind.

MIDWEEK: Tuesday will be warm and a little on the humid side. A
subtle warm front may trigger a couple of showers and storms, mainly
during the afternoon (that daytime heating thing will help, you
know.) By Wednesday, a cold front will be trying to sag into
Alabama and we will bump up chance of a shower or storm, but the best
chances of rain will stay to the west of us. Ditto for Thursday, with
just a slight chance of a shower or storm.

THE WEEKEND: By Thursday, a developing storm system to the west of
Alabama will push another surge of moisture our way. Showers and
storms will move our way ahead of an upper trough that will be pushing
eastward. This trough will propel a front through the state, along
with a line of showers and storms. The models have been vacillating
between it being a Friday event and it being a Saturday event. For
now, we will keep the Friday timing idea in place, with clearing skies
on Saturday and pretty much a fine Sunday. The upper low to our
northeast will be the fly in the ointment.

VOODOOLAND: We call it Voodooland. It is that 7-14 day period when
you have to take the models with a grain of salt. More like, a box of
it. But fun to look at. Maybe a shower late on Sunday into Monday
thanks to the upper low. Then look for a secondary low to develop
along the East Coast, perhaps flinging some showers back our way early
in the week. Hints of a northwesterly flow even around midweek with a
chance of showers/storms for us, then a big developing low to our west
by the first weekend in May. Look for a big severe weather event
around Saturday May 4th over the Midwest.

AN UNRELATED THOUGHT: Did you see the Braves fans in Atlanta give
Andruw Jones a standing ovation when he hit his first home run of the
season on Saturday in Turner Field? The former Brave was all smiles
as he returned to the dugout. That's one of the great things about
the South, we remember our own. You think that would have happened in
many Major League cities?

ON THIS DATE IN 1896: In Sandusky County, Ohio, a violent F-4 tornado
"crept along the ground like a mammoth rock, and smoke puffed at the
top like an engine." At least five homes were leveled to the ground at
Booktown. Nineteenth century newspapers could always be counted on
for unique and unusual descriptions of the tornado funnel.
