This is a weekend of outdoor activity here in Central Alabama. The
Magic City Art Connection is in Linn Park today and tomorrow, starting
at 10 a.m. each day. This is one of the finest juried art shows in
the country, so make sure that you get downtown to enjoy it. For
baseball fans, the Barons, Samford and UAB all have homestands this
weekend. There is a wildflower hike today at Ruffner Mountain Nature
Center. And something is going on at Talladega, but it escapes me for
the moment...

OH YEAH! The Aaron's Dream Weekend! That's it! Just one of the
biggest weekends in racing. Thousands of fans will flock to the
world's fastest speedway to enjoy the Aaron's 312 today. Then
tomorrow, at 1 p.m., the flag will drop on the
Aarons 499 at 1 p.m. CDT. Weather will be
important for all these events, but the good news is that it should
not be a washout at any event.

WEEKEND WEATHER: A cold front over westhern Tennessee and northern
Mississippi is pushing an area of showers and storms into West Alabama
this morning. The front and an outflow boundary will serve as foci
for more showers and storms with the heating of the day. Some of the
storms could be strong with lots of lightning, gusty winds and smal
hail.

Highs will make the middle to upper 70s. Tonight should be mostly dry
and mild. Tomorrow will feature th ebest chance for rain and storms
west of I-65 during the day. Storms could be strong to severe again
tomorrow. Then, storms will spread across the entire area during the
evening ahead of the main cold front.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The front will be south of Birmingham by Monday
morning, and areas of South Central Alabama will see showers through
part of the morning. Skies will clear during the day, with a
refreshing northwest breeze and highs in the 60s. By Tuesday morning,
it will feel really refreshing, with morning lows in the 40s.
Tuesday will feature plenty of sunshine with highs in the lower 70s.
By Wednesday, nearly perfect conditions will prevail with lots of
sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. Moisture levels will be
increasing by Thursday, with a chance of showers returning by late
Thursday into Friday. It looks like we will have a good chance of
showers and storms on Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1884: Tornadoes were hard to capture on early cameras
with their hard to use glass plate negatives. The first recorded
photograph of a tornado was taken on this date by A.A. Adams near
Garnett, Kansas. Adams reportedly sold many copies of the photo as a
stereoscopic set that could be viewed with a special viewer. Adams
would be remembered as the "first man ever to photograph a cyclone."
The weak tornado was probably actually dissipating as the photograph
was made.
