...Warm Spring Weather Continues...

GORGEOUS SPRING WEATHER: Wonderful weather continues through mid-week,
with mostly sunny warm afternoons and clear pleasant nights. Each
afternoon, temperatures will rise into the 80 to 83 degree range for
most Alabama communities, with a few spots across West Alabama
reaching the mid 80s. While low level moisture levels will be on the
increase, warm air aloft should keep the airmass capped off, and the
chance of an afternoon shower will remain very low through Thursday.

We will mention a chance of widely scattered, mainly afternoon and
evening showers and thunderstorms Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with a
weak front approaching from the north. But, there is very little upper
support for that front, and it should dissipate somewhere around the
Alabama/Tennessee border over the weekend. So, at this time we don't
expect any really heavy rain or a significant chance of severe
weather. Just keep in mind a few showers will be around in scattered
spots this weekend. Otherwise, there will be intervals of sunshine
with highs remaining in the low 80s.

RACE WEEKEND: For NASCAR fans coming in for this week's activities at
the Talladega Superspeedway, we expect a mix of sun and clouds Friday
through Sunday with afternoon highs between 79 and 82. The chance of a
shower specifically at the track Saturday and Sunday is about one in
four, and at this point it doesn't look like rain will be much of an
issue.

NEXT WEEK: There is increasing confidence in the idea of an upper air
low moving into the Deep South next week; if that scenario is correct
then we can expect an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms by Tuesday and Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A mid-afternoon F2 tornado struck the small
northeast Alabama town of Rainsville in DeKalb County without warning,
injuring 12 people. Over 30 homes were damaged by the twister and 50
buildings in the community received damage, including the city and
police and fire stations. No tornado warning was in effect at the time
of the storm since NWS

Doppler radar did not show significant signs of storm rotation.
Ironically, a more powerful Doppler radar was being prepared for
installation, very near the location of the tornado (the system is now
in service at Hytop, east of Huntsville).

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Snow flakes that fell across the Vancouver
region of western Canada Friday night and Saturday represent the
latest snowfall ever on record. At its peak, the storm dumped one inch
of snow at the Vancouver International Airport. Hottest spot in the
nation yesterday was Laredo, Texas with 98 degrees. A nearly
stationary upper low dumped heavy rain on parts of the mid-Atlantic
coast region; the total at Richmond, VA was 2.08", while Norfolk, VA
reported 1.89".
