AFTERNOONS GETTING WARMER: Even with highs in the lower 80s in the
next several days, the humidity is relatively low, so it is going to
be a comfortable time in Alabama through most of next weekend.
Wednesday will probably be our warmest day. We are shooting for a high
of 83 as an average across Central Alabama, but some West Alabama
locations may aim at around 86 or 87.
THE RAIN SITUATION: When is the last time you have seen the rain
deficiency for Birmingham at less than one inch? As of this morning,
the deficiency was 0.74 of an inch. I do not remember it being that
low even for most of last year. That part of the drought has greatly
eased and so have reservoir levels in many areas. Topsoil moisture
seems to be in decent shape, but the deeper soil is something else as
well as underground water tables. That takes much longer to correct.
We do not see much rain in our forecast through the rest of the week.
In fact, we do not even mention any until some widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon and Friday night. A cold
front will be moving down into Alabama Saturday, so our better chance
of showers and storms will probably be at sometime Saturday and
Saturday night. Even then it will not be an all-day rain event by any
means. That same forecast is applicable to the Talladega area for the
big race weekend.
FROST SEASON OVER? Most likely. It was 31 in Birmingham on this date
in 1953 and we have had a few examples of below freezing the last week
of April. Another killing frost would be virtually unheard of.
THREE-DOT STUFF: Some bad wildfires in New Mexico SE of Albuquerque…
it is getting that time of year…one of the deepest snow amounts in the
USA this morning was 292 inches at Swift Creek, Washington in the
mountains…lower 48 snow cover now down to 13%…1 to 2 feet of new snow
over the weekend in the mountains of West Montana and 13 inches at
Great Falls Airport…Paradise Ranger Station still has 215 inches in
Washington State on the slopes of Mt. Rainier…40 was one of the cooler
temperatures in Alabama this morning at Black Creek…coldest in the USA
was 8 at Great Falls, Montana…major flooding continues around
Vicksburg where the mighty Mississippi was 9 feet above flood stage…
how would you like to be at Vostok, Antarctica today where the
temperature was 95 below zero and a sustained wind of 12 mph? That
means the old wind chill was 137 below.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Speaking before the Birmingham Rotary
Club East Friday, Dr. David Hayes, a veterinarian, told the story of a
child losing his 14-year old Golden Retriever. Everyone was very upset
except the child. When quizzed, the lad this wonderful explanation:
"People have to spend a whole lot of years learning how to be kind and
gentle. Dogs are born that way, so they do not have to live as long."
Pretty clever and thanks to Glenn Slye for passing along that tidbit…
Little Miss Molly had such a busy weekend, that she slept until 10:30
this morning—almost unheard of. Our granddaughter and her two babies
from Russellville were here over the weekend. One time on Sunday, 7
people came walking in the door at the same time. Little Miss Molly
became frantic, because she thinks it is her mandate to greet each
person individually. She was running all around the room putting her
paws on everyone's leg with her tail wagging like a buzz saw and
jumping all around. Life goes on. Impossible to have a dull moment
with that delightful little girl......
