...Showers and Storms Ahead...
A busy weekend here in Alabama with lots of events. And the weather
is a little on the dicey side, so you will want to monitor the latest
forecasts and weather conditions through the weekend.
FOR YOUR SATURDAY: A weakening band of showers and storms move into
western sections of the state this morning. It died along a line from
Decatur to Aliceville by late morning. The line was in advance of a
weak cold front that was pushing into Northwest Alabama. The front
will settle into the state, but probably will not make much more
progress. Meanwhile, instabilities will be on the increase through
the afternoon as periodic sunshine warms temperatures into the upper
70s along with dewpoints in the low 60s. CAPE values will exceed 1500
j/kg as the airmass becomes unstable this afternoon across Central
Alabama. This means some of the storms could be strong to even
severe, although significant severe weather is not anticipated. Most
of the activity should be west of I-65, I believe. This bodes well
for this afternoon's activities at Talladega. The storms should
diminish this evening and the front should settle into the Tennessee
Valley.
FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Expect a mostly cloudy, slightly muggy start to the
day on Sunday with mild temperatures in the 60s. An approaching upper
level disturbance will be swinging our way out of the southwest. As
it does, moisture levels will be on the increase, especially over
western sections. Showers and storms will break out in the unstable
air, and they will be fairly numerous ahead of a stronger cold front.
The Storm Prediction Center has almost all of Central and North
Alabama outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather on Sunday, with
the main threats being damaging winds and large hail. We will have to
watch the situation carefully, especially with all of the fans at
Talladega and folks out downtown at the Magic City Art Connection.
Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 70s. The activity should sweep
into Georgia during the evening hours.
NEXT WEEK: Monday will feature breezy and cooler
conditions. Tuesday will start off in the refreshing 40s. Wednesday
will be nearly perfect. Moisture levels will start to return on
Thursday with showers possible again by Friday.
A DEADLY REMINDER: On this date two years ago, two men
died instantly when the flagpole they were setting up atop their RV at
the Talladega Superspeedway was blown by a wind gust into power lines.
THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER: A major disaster occurred on
this date in 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine
as flawed Soviet reactor designed combined with serious mistakes in
judgment by the plant operators. The result was an explosion and fire
that resulted in a release of about 5 percent of the reactor core.
Most of the release was composed of dust and debris near the site.
Lighter materials were carried by the wind over parts of the Ukraine,
Belarus, Russia and even to parts of Scandinavia and Europe. Thirty
people died as a result of the accident, and extreme increases in
thyroid cancers have been observed downwind of the site. If the wind
had been westerly, the release would have targeted the city of Kiev,
which undoubtedly would have resulted in many more fatalities.
Chernobyl is the only case where radiation related deaths have
occurred as the result of an accident at a commercial nuclear power
site.
