...Beautiful Spring Weather Ahead...

Today and tomorrow's weather is a big part of the reason why the
living in Alabama is so fine. A nice gentle rain event delivered some
nice rainfall amounts overnight, but skies were clear by this
morning. Temperatures are in the 60s at lunch time, with highs
expected to be in the upper 60s to around 70 for the most part this
afternoon. There is a fresh westerly breeze, but it is serving just
to make things nicer. Temperatures tonight will drop into the 40s
under mostly clear skies. A few wraparound clouds could affect the
Tennessee Valley of North Alabama, but they should stay to the north.

PERFECT WEATHER WATCH… Exceptionally fine weather
conditions have prompted The Weather Company to issue a Perfect
Weather Watch for Central Alabama for Sunday. A Perfect Weather Watch
is issued when mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the middle to
upper 70s are expected. When a Perfect Weather Watch is issued for
your area, you should review your Perfect Weather action plan. Be
prepared to go into action in case a Perfect Weather Warning is issued
so you can take advantage of your favorite outdoor activity.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We will get a little preview of summer
in the coming week. We will see highs in the 80s for much of the
time. Monday will be another fine day, with highs right around 80,
along with a good bit of sunshine. A subtle warm front may bring a
chance of showers or a storm late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
All that warmth will combine with decent moisture to produce
conditional instability Tuesday afternoon to produce a chance of
isolated thunderstorms.

By Wednesday, an approaching cold front will approach
Alabama from the northwest. As it does, we will see an increase in
showers and storms for Wednesday. On Thursday, our attention will
turn to another storm system forming east of the Rockies and moving
out onto the Plains. As it does, our southerly flow will increase and
the midweek front will move back north as a warm front. With an
unstable airmass in place, we will see more showers and storms
Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Look for another round of
showers and storms on Friday. Sound familiar? Severe weather looks
like it will be a possibility. High pressure will build in for the
weekend, with rain ending Saturday morning.

TYPHOON NEOGURI: Typhoon Neoguri weakened to a tropical
storm as it moved inland on the Chinese Coast near Hainan Island
today. The system has since weakened further as it moves near Hong
Kong. Gusty winds and heavy rain were anticipated in Hong Kong during
their overnight.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The 108th running of the Boston
Marathon was conducted in extremely warm conditions with a reading of
83F at the start of the race. A total of 671 runners required medical
attention, which is higher than normal.

Rain and storms moved across the area during the night ahead of a cold
front that has pushed east of Atlanta this morning. Skies will clear
quickly this morning from west to east as drier air works into the
state. Temperatures this afternoon will range from the upper 60s to
the lower 70s with a decent west wind. Look for comfortable lows
overnight in the upper 40s with clear skies.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful April day.
Skies will be mostly sunny and temperatures will warm into the upper
70s. A few spots may reach 80 degrees. There will be a nice westerly
breeze.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We are going to get a little preview of summer in the
week ahead. We will see warm and humid conditions with a chance of
isolated showers each day during the afternoon. A passing upper level
disturbance could trigger a couple of storms on Monday, but the rain
chance is actually quite low. Tuesday and Wednesday will feature
partly sunny conditions, warm temperatures and relative high
humidities along with a chance of a few showers. A cold front will
try to sag our way on Wednesday, giving us a fairly good chance of
rain then. A developing storm system will keep us breezy and warm on
Thursday with showers over northern sections. The system will get its
act together bringing us showers and storms Friday night. Things
should clear out for Talladega.

ACTIVE SEVERE WEATHER WEEK: It looks like the coming week will be
active with severe weather across the Plains and Midwest. Storm
chasers are already salivating over the setup Monday and Tuesday from
Illinois and the Midwest all the way back into Texas and Louisiana.
It looks like there will strong instability and a very dynamic upper
air situation. It will bear watching.

TYPHOON NEOGURI : Typhoon Neoguri is the earliest typhoon to threaten
China in the past six decades. The system weakened back to a tropical
cyclone with top winds near 70 mph as it made landfall west of Hong
Kong early this morning. The system will be near Hong Kong this
afternoon. The weather forecast from the Hong Kong Observatory:
Under the combined effect of Severe Tropical Storm Neoguri and the
northeast monsoon, it will be windy and rainy over the northern part
of the South China Sea and the south China coastal areas in the next
couple of days. For Hong Kong: Cloudy with occasional rain. Winds
out of the east at force six to force seven (22-33 knots or 26-38 mph)
with occasional gusts to force eight (34-40 knots, or 39-47 mph)
offshore and on higher ground. Today's high 23C or 73F.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: The period April 19 to April 21 produced an
almost continuous outbreak of 111 tornadoes from Arkansas, through
Illinois, and into southern Canada. The downtown of Berea, Kentucky
was destroyed and Fort Smith, Arkansas was also heavily damaged.
Almost every one of the 150 homes in Ogden, Illinois were damaged or
destroyed by the tornado that struck at 7:00PM on the 19th. Seventeen
people were injured, but there were no deaths in the residential area.
Urbana and Decatur were also hard hit. The good news was that 105 of
the 111 tornadoes and all of the killer tornadoes occurred within
tornado watches.

SHOWERS AND STORMS TONIGHT: The main question is, when will the
showers and thunderstorms that we expect tonight taper off and end
Saturday morning? Weather models disagree. One has the showers
persisting until afternoon and the other ends the showers early. We
are going to go with a forecast of all the showers and thunderstorms
moving out of Central Alabama early tomorrow morning with dry weather
the rest of the day. That will be the prelude to a mostly sunny, warm
Sunday although temperatures will fall into the mid 40s early Sunday
morning. Many places in Alabama will see a high temperature around 80
on Sunday and several degrees warmer on Monday and Tuesday. After the
showers end Saturday morning, very little storm action into the middle
of next week.

MORE ABOUT TONIGHT: At midafternoon, showers and some thunderstorms
had spread as far east as Mississippi. However, lightning activity was
not that great, in fact, it was minimal. The Storm Prediction Center
outlined a Slight Risk of severe weather over SE Louisiana, South
Mississippi and the SW corner of Alabama. Surprisingly, no Severe
Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued so far today. This probably
bodes well for Alabama tonight. Not enough ingredients are in the pie
to create a significant threat for us. James Spann has a famous
saying, "When it comes to thunderstorms, expect the unexpected."
However, this event really does look like it will be no comparison to
the last two Fridays. We expect an average rain amount somewhere
between ½ and 2/3 of an inch across Central Alabama.

RENAMING OUR FRIDAYS: I had just about decided that we should start
calling Friday "Frightful Friday" because of our recent history of
many thunderboomers.

MISCELLANEOUS: No part of Alabama remains under the Exceptional
(D4) Drought designation. Even the D3 (Extreme) now covers only about
16% of NE Alabama…1,000 acres of land was burned over by vicious
wildfires in the Texas Panhandle earlier this week. The main fire was
18 miles south of Dumas. The uncontrollable fire was caused by strong
winds and very low humidity. The NWS in Amarillo described the fire as
exhibiting "extreme fire behavior." That tells me it was very, very
scary.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our ex-neighbors, Martin and Kim who
now live in Riverside, had to go through the awful experience of
having their 16-year old Shih-Tzu put to sleep recently. His name was
Huey. He had a good life, but that is not making anything easier when
it is time to say goodbye. That is the same breed as Miss Molly…much,
much excitement on Little Miss Molly's almost nightfall walk
yesterday. As we were coming down the walking trail by our house, she
saw 4 little white feet below the bottom of the wooden fence. She
tippy-toed to the fence and barked so loud that it sounded like an
explosion. It was the Community Cat. He shot up a nearby tree like a
rocket being launched. I need to know. How does a dog know the
difference between a cat and dog in the semi-darkness and how does a
cat know that a dog cannot climb a tree. Life goes on, much more
exciting with a 9-pound dog.....

...Showers and Storms Arrive Tonight...

CHANGES AHEAD: Looks like we will be able to squeeze in one more nice
day; the sky today will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 70s.
Winds will increase out of the south during the day, in advance of a
storm system to the west. Showers and thunderstorms will move into
Alabama tonight, and it still looks like the primary window for rain
will come from about 6:00 p.m. today until 6:00 a.m. Saturday. At this
point a major severe weather event does not look likely due to very
limited instability values, but there will be some decent upper
support so a few strong storms will be possible. The bottom line if
that you have to watch any storm system that blows through here in mid-
April. Rainfall amounts of one-half to three-quarters of an inch look
likely at this point.

IMPROVING WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND: Lingering showers should move out
of the state early tomorrow, and the sky will become partly sunny by
afternoon with a high in the low 70s. Sunday looks like a beautiful
spring day with ample sunshine and a high close to 80 degrees.

SUMMER-LIKE WEATHER NEXT WEEK: Looks like next week might be the
warmest one so far this year; we will be in the low 80s Monday through
Wednesday, with rather humid conditions developing thanks to a
persistent southerly flow. There could be enough instability for a few
isolated afternoon showers, but widespread rain during the first half
of the week isn't likely. Showers and storms will increase by Thursday
and Friday as a cold front approaches from the north. There seems to
be a good chance that front will become stationary around here, which
could prolong the chance of rain into the following weekend.

DID YOU KNOW? Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named
from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now
maintained and updated by an international committee of the World
Meteorological Organization. The original name lists featured only
women's names. In 1979, men's names were introduced and they alternate
with the women's names. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2006
list will be used again in 2012. In the event that more than 21 named
tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional
storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma,
Delta, and so on.

The 2008 names are Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay,
Gustav, Hanna, Ike, Josephine, Kyle, Laura, Marco, Nana, Omar, Paloma,
Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, and Wilfred. The 2008 hurricane season
begins on June 1.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A tornado touched down near Aledo, Texas
last night, with is west of Fort Worth. There over two dozen reports
of large hail across North Texas. Temperatures across the continental
U.S. yesterday ranged from a low of 5 at Burgess Junction, Wyoming to
an afternoon high of 90 at Death Valley, California.

A NICE SPRING WARM UP: After several chilly nights in a row and even
some scattered frost on two nights, we now look down the road. Just
around the curve is some highs in the upper 70s for tomorrow and 80 or
better on Sunday and Monday. Look for the weather to be completely dry
until late Friday when a few showers and storms will travel in from
the west. Here in Central Alabama, by far the more numerous showers
and thunderstorms will come Friday night. They should still be in
progress after midnight, but doing their best to get out of Dodge
before the sun comes up on Saturday. Not a great deal of change in our
thinking about how much rain we will get out of this quick event, but
it looks like about 0.80.

Even that will help our drought some more. No part of Alabama is
under the Exceptional D4 Drought Category. Even the topsoil is in a
lot better shape than it was in the height of the drought. However,
crops depend on deeper soil that goes down to about four feet. That
part has not greatly improved.

PROWLING THE COUNTRYSIDE: I was just looking at a warning map
showing all 50 states county-by-county and there is a long green
string from NW Illinois to SE Louisiana. Translation: those counties
are along the Mississippi River and some type of Flood Advisory or
Flood Warning goes all the way down to near Baton Rouge. Part of that
area will be in line to get some more heavy rain from the same storm
system that is to bring our Friday night storms…no sub-zero weather in
the lower 48 this morning. The coldest was 8 in Jellystone Park (as
Yogi Bear would say)…coldest in Alaska was 20 below at Bettles…the
deepest snow I could find (not counting the mountains) was 50 inches
at Whittier, Alaska…with the world tilting slowly on its axis, the old
globe will be shifting its seasons to bring the coldest weather to
southern extremities and hot weather to the Northern Hemisphere…let us
look in on one of my favorite spots, which is Vostok, Antarctica,
where it was a bitter 86 below zero and a steady 12 mph wind. That
will send the wind chill completely off the charts. The actual
temperature is forecast to reach 99 below during this weekend.

USA SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: We believe that because of limited
instability, we will get by here in Alabama with a minimal threat of
severe thunderstorms Friday night. In fact, we have not even mentioned
a slight risk. That could change, of course. There is a Slight Risk
today in the south/central part of the country.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have decided my little 9-pound stick-
tight pal, sometimes known as Little Miss Molly, doubles as an
electronic monitor. I cannot even tiptoe on the carpet through the
living area to get my cup of coffee without that little bushy head
slowly rotating like it is a moving department store camera checking
to see if I am going to steal something. All signs seem to say that
Molly was glad to get rid of that long hair. She has been going on
energy explosions since being home. She will tear through all rooms of
the house at 90 mph with her little tires squealing and nobody around.
Today was my 76th birthday, but I truly feel like 46 and am humbly
thankful. I mentioned this on our internal conference this morning.
Bill Murray mentioned it on the blog and what an explosion of
greetings. I deeply appreciate everyone. Have received 148 greetings
via the 33/40 blog and e-mail. I had no idea so many people knew me.
The greetings came from as far away as Cincinnati. I always thought I
could go down to Bryant Denny Stadium, when Alabama had 150,000 people
at a practice game, yell my name over the PA system and the only
people that would recognize it would be Russell Thomas and Grady
Vinson. Life goes on.....

...A Spectacular Spring Day...

SEVERE CLEAR: If you liked the weather yesterday, you will love the
weather today across Alabama. Another bright, sunny day with a high in
the mid 70s, right at average values for April 17.

RAIN BEFORE THE WEEKEND GETS HERE: A storm system will continue to
develop over the central part of the nation today, and will bring our
next chance of rain to the state. At this point, it looks like a
majority of the day tomorrow will be dry with a partly sunny sky. The
primary window for showers and thunderstorms will come from about 6:00
p.m. tomorrow through 6:00 a.m. Saturday. There will be sufficient
dynamic support for strong thunderstorms, but instability values will
be very limited this time, which should prevent a major problem with
severe thunderstorms. We are projecting rain totals in the one-half to
three-quarter of an inch range for most of Alabama.

The rain will move out of the state quickly early Saturday morning,
and the sky should become partly sunny by Saturday afternoon with a
high in the low 70s. Sunday looks like a very nice day, with ample
sunshine and a high near 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will look and feel more like summer across
Alabama next week as an upper air ridge builds across the Deep South.
Moisture levels will increase, setting the state for warm and rather
humid conditions, with afternoon highs up in the low 80s. A few widely
scattered showers could show up early in the week, mainly during the
peak of the afternoon heating process. However, right now it looks
like the best chance of rain will come later in the week, on Thursday
and Friday, with a cold front approaching.

NEXT FROST? Sure looks like the next chance of frost in Alabama will
come around the time the pumpkins are out in late October. We have
seen a freeze as late as April 23 (our low was 30 on April 23, 1986),
and temperatures in the 30s as late as May 13 (the low was 38 on May
13, 1960). But, the upper air pattern suggests no serious intrusion of
cold air into Alabama during the next two weeks. Never say never in
the weather business, but I would say you are safe to plant anything
you want now without the threat of a killing frost.

DID YOU KNOW? A downburst is created by an area of significantly rain-
cooled air that, after hitting ground level, spreads out in all
directions producing strong winds. Unlike winds in a tornado, winds in
a downburst are directed outwards from the point where it hits land or
water. Dry downbursts are associated with thunderstorms with very
little rain, while wet downbursts are created by thunderstorms with
high amounts of rainfall. Alabama's core wet microburst season is late
May, June, and July.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the U.S. yesterday was Bullhead
City, Arizona with a high of 100 degrees. On the other extreme, Lake
Yellowstone, WY and Stanley, ID dropped to 2 degrees early yesterday
morning. One of the warmest spots in Alabama yesterday was Pinson with
75 degrees.

LAST FROST UNTIL AUTUMN? Cannot say absolutely 100% certain, but
there is an excellent chance that we will not see freezing
temperatures again until autumn. In extreme cases, we have had
temperatures around freezing the last weekend of March. That is quite
an anomaly.

There was scattered frost across various sections of North and
Central Alabama last night and there was a wide variation in
temperature due to a temperature inversion. Heavy frost was reported
at Muscadine and Hamilton. Just a few of the lower temperatures
included 27 in Muscadine and Hamilton, 29 in Black Creek, 30 in Coker
and McCalla, 32 in Decatur, Ft. Payne, Pinson and Concord, and 35 in
Scottsboro, Anniston and Tuscaloosa.

At one point, there was an 18-degree difference between Noccalula
Falls and the Gadsden Skycam only three miles apart.

Now let us turn our attention to a spring-like warm up. We will
recover quickly from those chilly temperatures and we will have highs
in the 70s the rest of the week. In fact, by Sunday a number of
communities will warm to the 80-degree mark or better.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Latest model runs have slowed the weather systems a
little. Now it appears that here in Central Alabama a round of
scattered showers and thunderstorms will be mainly Friday night and
extending into the early hours of Saturday. The showers should end
fairly early Saturday morning. If we had to guess how much rain we
will get from these storms, we would say about 0.80.

PROWLING THE NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Caribou, Maine is not the
only place in the lower 48 that has had an overdose of snow this
season. Marquette, in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, has received 39
inches in the last two weeks and 205 inches for the season. That is
about 25 inches more than average. It is one of the snowiest locations
in the USA away from mountains…Las Vegas has received only 0.70 rain
this year—only about 1/3 of normal…not too far from Las Vegas, the
hottest in the country yesterday was 98 at Laughlin, Nevada…cold
temperatures this morning 4 above in Yellowstone National Park and 18
below at Point Lay, Alaska.

SUMMER WILDFIRES: Remember all those tragic brush fires in North
Texas and Oklahoma last summer, especially in the Texas Panhandle? In
the last 24 hours, the town of Ordway, Colorado had to be evacuated
because of raging brush fires. That is about 50 miles east of Pueblo.

HARD TO BELIEVE: On this date in 1880, a tornado at Marshall,
Missouri sucked a 39-foot well dry when it passed across. I have huge
doubts about that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Goldwing Dave is the pen name for the
gentleman that reads our material daily. Yesterday he sent me 10
commandments for a responsible pet owner as dictated by the pet. Just
a couple of those and this is the pet talking: "My life is likely to
last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be painful and do not
be angry with me for a long time and do not lock me up as punishment.
You have your work, your friends, your entertainments—but I have only
you." Great advice, Dave…Little Miss Molly always jumps with joy when
she gets home from an all-day visit to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop).
When we turn on to our street, she can hardly wait to get out of the
car and she looks for all of her friends as we drive down the block…
she looks so funny. There is too much commotion at the PBS for naps,
so she always takes long ones for a day or two. Last night she put
herself to bed on the king-size bed before any of us were ready to
turn in. I hope to start a round of ballgames with her today. Life
goes on......

...Warmer Weather In The Days Ahead...

WARMING TREND: While we begin the day down in the 30s, look for a
rapid warm-up across Alabama today. Most communities will reach the
low 70s this afternoon with a sunny sky. The warming trend continues
tomorrow with a high in the mid 70s.

ANOTHER STORMY FRIDAY: Another spring storm system will bring clouds
to Alabama Friday, along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
At this point, it looks like the primary threat of showers and storms
will come from about 3:00 p.m. Friday through 3:00 a.m. Saturday.
There will be a decent amount of dynamic upper air support, but
instability will be rather limited, which should prevent a major
severe weather threat. But, a few strong to severe thunderstorms are
not out of the question, and we will monitor the system closely in
coming days. At this point it looks like most of North and Central
Alabama can expect around one-half inch of rain, with isolated amounts
to one inch. The heaviest totals should be over the northwest counties
of the state.

WEEKEND PEEK: The sky will become partly sunny on Saturday, and
temperatures will remain mild since no Polar is involved with the
system. Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine with dry air
in place. We are forecasting a high in the low 70s on Saturday, with
upper 70s on Sunday. The warm-up continues into early next week; there
is a good chance we rise into the low 80s by Monday and Tuesday.
Moisture levels will be increasing, but with an upper air ridge
overhead, the chance of rain early next week looks small.

LONG RANGE: A big upper air storm over the western U.S. will be
shunted northward into Canada next week as that high pressure aloft
holds steady across the Deep South. A weakening front will bring a
chance of showers during the latter half of the week, but for now it
does not look like a major rain event, and the severe weather threat
is relatively low. Computer models are suggesting the upper air ridge
could hold in place for the rest of April, which would suggest warmer
and drier than normal weather for Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: But I swear I sent it. Many federal tax returns
being loaded into a truck were blown away in Oklahoma City by a
violent thunderstorm with nearly 100-mph wind gusts. Will Rogers
Airport in Oklahoma City recorded wind gust to 93 mph, the highest win
measured there there in 24 years.

TOO MUCH WATER: The Mississippi River is now predicted to crest at 51
feet in Vicksburg Saturday. That's 8 feet above flood level.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials blame two deaths in
Tunica County on the flooding from the Mississippi. The agency reports
eight homes have been destroyed and 370 damaged by flooding. The Isle
of Capris riverboat gaming hall in Natchez had to close earlier this
week because of the flooding.

THE ALABAMA STORY: West Alabama will not be quite as cold as it was
last night, but the eastern part of the state will be about the same.
It will be clear and scattered frost should develop before daybreak
with a better chance over the eastern counties and especially in the
valleys of North and East Alabama. By daybreak, a high-pressure ridge
should be in place from Boston to Birmingham and Atlanta. Southerly
winds will set in across Alabama soon after daybreak bringing a nice
afternoon warm up.

We expect low temperatures tonight in the mid 30s across Central
Alabama, but closer to freezing in the eastern and northeastern
valleys. That should be our last frost threat for quite some time,
possibly the last one until next season. Of course, in the weather
business we need to avoid the word "never."

THE FROST LAST NIGHT: It appears that we at least partially bit the
bullet last night. The wind held up long enough to keep most
communities from reaching the freezing mark, except for a few hours
toward daybreak. Here are a few of the colder temperatures:

28 Cottondale, Remlap
29 Bear Creek, Hamilton, Black Creek
30 Moulton, Concord/Hueytown, Munford
31 Russellville, Pinson, Tuscaloosa, Vinemont, Coker, McCalla,
Virginia Mines
32 Decatur, Huntsville, Ft. Payne, Cullman, Muscadine

The other temperatures were in the mid and upper 30s in most areas.

NEXT RAIN: At some point Friday, scattered showers and thunderstorms
will reach our area with probably the better chance in the afternoon
and at night. This may be another time that we should not use the word
never, but it does look like this Friday event will not be as strong
as the last two Fridays. Our best estimate this far ahead would be
about 1/2 inch of rain.

DROUGHT NEWS ENCOURAGING: The Birmingham Water Works has lifted
restrictions for their customers. Lake Purdy is full and Inland Lake
is almost full. Springville has received 15 inches of rain this year
and Birmingham Airport over 17 inches—almost double the amount we had
last year at this time. That Springville report is on Simmons Mountain
and much of that rain eventually winds up in the Lake Purdy water shed.

DREADING ARTHUR: That is the name of the first tropical storm or
hurricane of the 2008 season. It is only six weeks until hurricane
season will be here. We wonder how bad.

FINAL THOUGHTS: We just gotta visit Caribou, Maine where they still
have 14 inches of snow and 198 inches for this season—almost twice
last year. They should easily reach 200 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is so quiet around our house that I
feel lost even if it is tax day. Little Miss Molly is at the PBS
(Puppy Beauty Shop) getting a summer cut. She will look about half her
size when she gets home. Instead of looking like a swamp rat, she will
look like my cute little girl. I cannot wait until she gets home—a
treat and big ballgame awaits her. Life goes on. JBE

...A Brighter And Warmer Today...

ONE MORE COLD NIGHT TONIGHT: After a very cold morning, temperatures
will warm nicely across Alabama today. With maximum available
sunshine, we should rise into the low 60s today, about ten degrees
warmer than yesterday, but still over 10 degrees below the average
high for April 15 (which is 74 for Birmingham). Once the sun goes down
this evening, temperatures will drop quickly, and most spots will be
in the mid 30s by daybreak tomorrow. There is a chance of frost after
midnight tonight, mainly for the eastern half of the state where the
wind will be near calm. Some of the normally colder spots near the
Georgia could even see a light freeze.

WARMER DAYS: Our warming trend will continue tomorrow and through the
rest of the week. Look for a high in the low 70s tomorrow, with mid
70s by Thursday and Friday. Dry air will mean a good supply of
sunshine tomorrow and Thursday.

MORE FRIDAY STORMS? We have dealt with severe thunderstorms the past
two Fridays in Alabama, and it looks like another spring storm system
will impact Alabama this Friday. A first look at this system suggests
that instability will be rather limited, which hopefully will prevent
a major severe weather threat, but we will keep a close eye on the
situation as the event gets closer. For now, it looks like the best
chance of showers and storms will come in the 12:00 noon to 12:00
midnight time frame on Friday. Rainfall totals of about one-half inch
can be expected, and most all of the showers should be out of Alabama
by 6:00 a.m. Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this point it looks like the sky will become
partly sunny on Saturday, with a high in the low 70s. Sunday looks dry
and mild with temperatures soaring into the upper 70s with a decent
amount of sunshine.

GOOD NEWS: Drought restrictions were lowered for customers of the
Birmingham Water Works Board yesterday… the system is lowering its
drought status to Stage 1, when customers are asked to take voluntary
steps to conserve water but penalties are no longer imposed for
overuse or rotating days for outside watering. The system's two main
reservoirs are at acceptable levels with Lake Purdy in Shelby County
listed as full and Inland Lake in Blount County at 92 percent filled.
So far in 2008, Birmingham has received 17.13" (based on data at the
Birmingham Airport), which is only 0.90" below the average level we
expect.

APRIL ICE: Convective showers across Alabama formed rapidly due to
very cold air aloft, making the atmosphere very stable despite the
cool surface temperatures. The temperature about 18,000 feet off the
ground was close to -22 (F). The cold air aloft was also responsible
for many reports of small hail and graupel across North Alabama.

LOOKING FOR WARMTH: While Alabamians were shivering yesterday, triple
digit heat was reported over parts of the Desert Southwest; the
hottest place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 104.

FROST AND FREEZE BY MORNING: Mind you, it will not be a widespread
hard freeze, but with temperatures dropping to near freezing for
several hours tender vegetation needs to be protected including your
shrubbery that is easily damaged in the spring.

This is going to be one of those nights where there is quite a
variation in temperature. The wind may take its time tonight to go
calm, so that means the temperature may hold up fairly well until
toward daybreak.

The atmosphere across Alabama today has been cold and a bit unstable.
We have had numerous reports of sleet over the north and central
portions. Much colder air was spreading in at about 10,000 feet. This
caused some convective showers to form that produced graupel. Graupel
has been in weather terminology from day one, but rarely used. It
means soft hail and usually very small. We had a number reports of
that along with the sleet today.

HOW COLD WILL IT BE? We are calling for an average low of 31 across
Central Alabama. Up on the ridges it may be closer to 35 to 36. In
extreme cases, there may be some pockets of 28-degree lows in the
colder well-protected valleys. Places like Pinson, Valley Head,
Bridgeport, Hamilton, Ft. Payne—you get the idea. A high-pressure
system stretching all the way from Louisiana to Ohio will be getting
right over North and Central Alabama by daybreak, so we need to be
cautious about our low temperatures. By Wednesday morning, the high
should be just a bit east of us. This will allow a south wind to set
in during the day Wednesday.

THE RAIN SITUATION: We are cheerful for the amounts of rain that
many areas received during the storms Friday. Too bad it had to come
during a very scary weather event. For a time it looked like somebody
could get a significant tornado, but we somewhat bit the bullet. The
handful of tornadoes that touched down were EF0. Our next rain will
come late this week. Some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
will enter our picture Friday afternoon and become more numerous
Friday night. The best estimate we can give on expected rain that far
ahead is about 1/2 inch average. That could change considerably by the
time the action gets here. The thunderstorms Friday reduced the
Birmingham Airport rain deficit for the year to only 0.78. Much, much
better than a year ago.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Lake Mead was formed by the construction of
Hoover Dam. It is a very large lake and the lifeblood for Las Vegas
and other desert areas when it comes to water needs. The lake is 110
miles long and it has a total shore length of 550 miles. A drought is
causing great concern and the lake has now fallen to about 50% of
capacity…cold spots this morning 9 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska and 5
above at Land o' Lakes, Wisconsin.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The combination of weather and last
minute frantic income tax work means that Little Miss Molly has been
totally ignored today. However, over the weekend that little girl had
so many ballgames that she was at times begging for mercy. Every one
of her ballgames are just alike. She races across the living area at
40 mph off of the carpet onto the hardwood and skids out of control.
She grabs a ball and races back to me and slams it down on my foot.
Often she will spin on the hardwood, then accelerate rapidly on the
carpet. Life goes on.......

...Freeze Possible Tonight...

An unseasonably cold airmass has the eastern half of the United States
in its grips here as we near the middle of April. The axis of the
huge upper trough extends from the Maritime Provinces of eastern
Canada directly into Alabama. Our air is flowing straight out of
Central Canada. You will see evidence of that when you head outside
this morning.

MISERABLE DAY TODAY: The average high for April 14th in Birmingham is
74F. Our average low this time of year is 48F. That is about where
some folks' highs will be today. Skies will be cloudy today, and
there will be a few spits and sputters of rain. Throw in a northerly
wind at 10-15 mph, and it will feel miserable today.

FREEZE POSSIBLE TONIGHT: We will be in record territory overnight
tonight into tomorrow morning. And that will have the attention of
growers across Central Alabama – both those of the commercial variety
and the backyard variety will have to keep an eye on the thermometer
overnight. Temperatures will fall to near 30-32 on average tonight,
with a few normally colder locations dropping further into the 20s.
So the chance will be there for a pretty significant freeze in some
spots, with a widespread frost in most. Two factor sin our favor:
The clouds may take longer to clear tonight over eastern sections.
And the winds my stay up just a bit also. But in spots where skies
clear and winds go calm, 20s will be the rule, most likely
northwestern sections around Marion County over to Cullman and on into
Northeast Alabama. Precautions should be taken to protect tender
vegetation.

REST OF THE WEEK: High pressure will be in firm control of our
weather by tomorrow. Highs tomorrow will top out in the 60s By
Wednesday, our winds will shift around to southerly. This will allow
the warm up to begin and we will see 70s by Wednesday afternoon. By
Thursday, highs will be in the upper 70s, which is a little above
normal for this time of year. By Friday morning, low pressure will be
over northern Missouri. A cold front will push a line of showers and
thunderstorms toward Alabama. The system does not look like it will
feature much in the way of severe weather, for now. But it is April
and we will have to watch it. Things could change. The models are
advertising a Friday evening arrival. That is subject to change,
generally to the later. For now, the smart weather pill machine says
Saturday will feature clearing skies with a nice rest of the weekend
in store.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Isaac Cline was the chief weatherman at New
Orleans as the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was raging across
the Midwest and South. Cline, famous for being the weatherman at
Galveston when the Great Hurricane of 1900 hit the Texas city, was
issuing forecasts of river crests on the Big Muddy. He was angry that
the forecasts were being ignored by New Orleans newspapers, who didn't
want to publicize the potential economic calamity that their port city
was facing. On this date, Cline called the newspapermen into his
office and charged them with jeopardizing the city's safety.
