SHOWERS AND STORMS TONIGHT: The main question is, when will the
showers and thunderstorms that we expect tonight taper off and end
Saturday morning? Weather models disagree. One has the showers
persisting until afternoon and the other ends the showers early. We
are going to go with a forecast of all the showers and thunderstorms
moving out of Central Alabama early tomorrow morning with dry weather
the rest of the day. That will be the prelude to a mostly sunny, warm
Sunday although temperatures will fall into the mid 40s early Sunday
morning. Many places in Alabama will see a high temperature around 80
on Sunday and several degrees warmer on Monday and Tuesday. After the
showers end Saturday morning, very little storm action into the middle
of next week.
MORE ABOUT TONIGHT: At midafternoon, showers and some thunderstorms
had spread as far east as Mississippi. However, lightning activity was
not that great, in fact, it was minimal. The Storm Prediction Center
outlined a Slight Risk of severe weather over SE Louisiana, South
Mississippi and the SW corner of Alabama. Surprisingly, no Severe
Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued so far today. This probably
bodes well for Alabama tonight. Not enough ingredients are in the pie
to create a significant threat for us. James Spann has a famous
saying, "When it comes to thunderstorms, expect the unexpected."
However, this event really does look like it will be no comparison to
the last two Fridays. We expect an average rain amount somewhere
between ½ and 2/3 of an inch across Central Alabama.
RENAMING OUR FRIDAYS: I had just about decided that we should start
calling Friday "Frightful Friday" because of our recent history of
many thunderboomers.
MISCELLANEOUS: No part of Alabama remains under the Exceptional
(D4) Drought designation. Even the D3 (Extreme) now covers only about
16% of NE Alabama…1,000 acres of land was burned over by vicious
wildfires in the Texas Panhandle earlier this week. The main fire was
18 miles south of Dumas. The uncontrollable fire was caused by strong
winds and very low humidity. The NWS in Amarillo described the fire as
exhibiting "extreme fire behavior." That tells me it was very, very
scary.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our ex-neighbors, Martin and Kim who
now live in Riverside, had to go through the awful experience of
having their 16-year old Shih-Tzu put to sleep recently. His name was
Huey. He had a good life, but that is not making anything easier when
it is time to say goodbye. That is the same breed as Miss Molly…much,
much excitement on Little Miss Molly's almost nightfall walk
yesterday. As we were coming down the walking trail by our house, she
saw 4 little white feet below the bottom of the wooden fence. She
tippy-toed to the fence and barked so loud that it sounded like an
explosion. It was the Community Cat. He shot up a nearby tree like a
rocket being launched. I need to know. How does a dog know the
difference between a cat and dog in the semi-darkness and how does a
cat know that a dog cannot climb a tree. Life goes on, much more
exciting with a 9-pound dog.....
