...Lots to Talk About...

Lots to talk about on this Saturday including some snow flurries around North and Central Alabama, the Snowpocalypse in the Washington, Baltimore and Philly areas, California mudslides, the Space Shuttle, a little football game in South Florida, and the potential for some wintry weather for us late in the week. Let's move quickly through these topics…

SUNSHINE TO RETURN FOR US: It has been cloudy, cold and breezy across Central Alabama, with temperatures remaining in the 30s in most locations all day. There were many reports of light snow flurries or sleet, mixed with some drizzle. Skies will remain mostly cloudy overnight with lows falling into the upper 20s. Sunshine will return on Sunday, but highs will be hard pressed to get into the upper 40s. Monday will see partly cloudy skies with highs back in the middle 50s. Clouds will thicken Monday night in advance of our next weathermaker.

PRECIPITATION PROSPECTS: Rain will return Monday night as a surface low moves into Southeast Alabama. Lows will be around 40, so the precipitation should be all liquid. Rain will end during the day Tuesday, after about three quarters of an inch falls on average. Wednesday will feature clearing skies, but highs will be in the 40s with a gusty northwest wind. By Thursday night, a surface low will form off the Texas coast. It will move northeastward, spreading precipitation back into Alabama during the pre-dawn hours. It looks like rain for now, but there is a chance that it could be snow over the northern half of the state. It's not a forecast at this time, but a possibility that will bear watching.

CALIFORNIA MUDSLIDES: I saw a Tweet from San Diego this morning that had a Californian complaining about rain, and they would have to put the top up on their convertible today. But in Southern California locations that were scorched by wildfires last year, the rain turned destructive. A soaking overnight rain and heavy showers this morning caused terrible mudslides north of Los Angeles this morning. Over 40 homes were damaged in the communities of La Canada, Flintridge, La Crescenta and Acton.

SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR LIFTOFF IN THE MORNING: The final Space Shuttle launch in darkness will occur before dawn Sunday morning as the Space Shuttle Endeavour lifts off at 4:49 a.m. EST. The forecast is good with a broken ceiling above 6600, but clearing and a visibility of 7 miles, no obstructions. The liftoff temperature should be around 45F with a northwest wind at around 8 mph. There are only 5 Space Shuttle missions left. It will be sad to see the program end. I remember the first one so clearly.

SUPER FORECAST: Nice weather in South Florida for the big game tomorrow evening. Sunshine all day with highs in the upper 60s. Kickoff temperature around 61F, falling back too 55F by the final whistle. Rain chance: 0%. Northwest wind at 4-7 mph.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, we will be talking about some sacred cows in weather with KSN Wichita Chief Meteorologist Dave Freeman. Some of the cows will include whether convective outlook risk labels should be changed, whether POPs are a bad thing and leveraging social science to make better forecasts. Be a part of the fastest hour in weather by listening at WeatherBrains.com or by subscribing at iTunes. It's free! Follow the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Record warmth across Alabama. 78 at Pinson easily smashed the old record of 70 set in 1957. The high in Birmingham was 76 degrees to tie the record and was 22 degrees above normal. It was 78 degrees in Montgomery and Evergreen. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com @ wxhistorian.

...Ain't No Sunshine...

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone It's not warm when she's away. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. and she's always gone too long, anytime she goes away. The 1971 Bill Withers song reached number three on the charts. If it had been released this week in Central Alabama, I think people would have been able to identify…

WEEKEND WEATHER: More miserable conditions today with cloudy, windy and cold weather, along with a little drizzle at times. Sunday will feature gradually improving weather, with sunshine returning during the day.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The beginning of the week will feature increasing clouds as our next system approaches, bringing us rain for late Monday night and Tuesday. Wednesday will feature colder weather. By Thursday, the next storm system will be swinging our way. That system will bear watching as it could combine with cold air to produce some snow for parts of the South. Not a forecast yet, with lots of uncertainty and disagreement among the models.

BLOCKBUSTER MID-ATLANTIC SNOWSTORM: A rapidly intensifying surface low over North Carolina is moving northeast and out to sea this morning. It brought heavy snow to the Mid Atlantic region, including the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area overnight, with snowfall rates of up to 2-3 inches per hour. Blizzard warnings were in effect for areas around the nation's capital. By the time the precipitation tapers later today, snowfall records could be broken in places like Baltimore and Washington, D. C.

SUPER FORECAST: Good weather in the cards for Sunday night's Super Bowl in South Florida. Expect mostly clear skies with game time temperatures around 66F, falling into the upper 50s during the game. Winds will be out of the northwest at about 10 mph.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly netcast that's all about weather. Each week, the show features some of the best minds in the business. Recent guests have included legendary radar expert Les Lemon, BBC Weather Presenter Hannah Bayman, famed Oklahoma City television meteorologist Gary England, severe weather expert Chuck Doswell and the Long Ranger from Accu-Weather, the incomparable Joe Bastardi. This Monday night, one of the top television meteorologists in the country, Dave Freeman from KSN in Wichita, will be the Guest WeatherBrain. Dave is a leader in leveraging social science to improve the impact of weather forecasts. He will talk about killing sacred cows in our business. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A freak snowstorm dumped up to 25 inches of snow on arts of Kentucky between the evening of the 3rd and the morning of the 6th. At Louisville, KY, the snowfall total from the storm stood at 22.4 inches, enough to establish a new record for the greatest snowstorm ever in the city's history. It was the first time the city ever recorded 20 or more inches of snow from a single storm. The previous record was 15.9 inches, established in January 1994. Deep snow covered parts of Central and Eastern Kentucky as well as Southern Ohio. Get a daily dose of weather history by following me on Twitter @wxhistorian.

TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE OF A DREARY DAY: If you looked up the meaning of a dreary day in the dictionary, it might refer you to February 5, 2010 in Alabama.

She did it to us again. I am speaking about our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, who we could not do without but she has been a pest lately sending a whole series of low-pressure areas inland for them to track NE across the SE states. That scenario is an automatic success for producing a lot of rain.

I doubt very seriously if you could find a single square foot of dry soil in Alabama today unless you looked under a house. We had a state-wide drenching yesterday and overnight. Many communities received over 2 inches and a few over 3 inches. We will pick these 6 totals that are representative around the state:

2.05 Birmingham Airport
2.42 Helena
3.76 Auburn
2.13 Tuscaloosa
2.36 Mobile Regional Airport
2.70 Selma

As the low-pressure area moved inland across SE Alabama, there was a lot of wind overnight, including a gust to 60 mph at Jacksonville in Calhoun County. This afternoon, the low-pressure area extended along the Alabama-Georgia border and was moving NE. This is going to play havoc in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Here in Alabama, the deck of clouds is going to act very stubborn and not completely break up until Sunday. Low clouds draped the state today like a wet blanket. I was up at St. Vincent's East in NE Birmingham this morning and the entire hospital complex was in the clouds.

Colder air will be spreading eastward across Alabama tonight with overnight lows in the mid 30s. Look for cloudy and colder weather Saturday with some scattered light rain and NW winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Our colder temperatures will be Sunday morning averaging around 28.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: You do not want to hear this, but more rain moves in Monday night and becomes more widespread on Tuesday. It will be another cold rain. There is an outside chance that it could become mixed with a little light snow over extreme North Alabama Tuesday night.

THE WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE DILEMMA: It is a big one. The most snow ever in the history of Washington weather records was 28 inches in January 1922. The NWS is projecting 20-30 inches tonight and Saturday with 14-24 in Atlantic City and 3-7 in New York City. There will be a lot of blowing and drifting snow and even a chance of some blizzard conditions.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks good for the late Sunday kickoff of the Super Bowl in Miami between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. Sunday should be mostly sunshine with a high of 72 with clear weather Sunday night. So, for the kickoff, it should be about 68 falling through the 60s in the 50s for the second half.

MISCELLANEOUS: The next Storm Alert 2010 program will be next Thursday night and 7:00 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. The program ends at 8:15. The door opens at 5:00. Come early for a good seat...the coldest temperature in the lower 48 this morning was 4 below zero at Berlin, New Hampshire...in Alaska, Ft. Yukon took the honors with 44 below...62.3% of the lower 48 had a snow cover this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly did not get home from the Puppy Beauty Shop yesterday until after dark. Strangely enough, she shakes with fright when we take her, but does not on the way home. Despite the darkness, she recognized her community as she got closer and that tail started thumping against the car door. As we drove down our street, she stretched her neck looking in all directions. She is a homebody....

...No Sunshine Until Sunday...

DAMP FRIDAY: The storm system that brought a soaking rain to Alabama overnight will move on to the east today, taking the heaviest rain with it. However, moist air will continue to cover Alabama, and we will mention periods of light rain or drizzle today with low clouds and temperatures hovering around the 50 degree mark much of the day.

OUR WEEKEND: Colder air invades Alabama late tonight and tomorrow; looks like we hold in the low to mid 40s all day tomorrow with clouds hanging tough and a chilly north breeze. There might even be a few sprinkles tomorrow morning, especially north of Birmingham. Sunshine finally returns in full force Sunday with a high in the upper 40s.

PARADE OF STORMS TO CONTINUE: The active southern branch of the jet stream will keep things hopping next week. The next system will bring a chance of rain to Alabama Monday night and Tuesday, followed by a shot of much colder air by mid-week. Another storm system blows in here toward the end of the week, and it has some potential to bring a chance of wintry weather to parts of the Deep South, but it is way too early to be specific.

TO THE NORTH: A major snow event will unfold today in the general region from Indianapolis to Cincinnati to Washington and Baltimore. Snow amounts of 1 to 2 feet are likely for the region around the District of Columbia, with blizzard conditions possible for cities like Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell already has declared a state of emergency; Wednesday's declaration authorizes state agencies to assist local governments responding to a storm that could bring high winds and up to 20 inches of snow to the northern and western parts of the state. McDonnell said road crews and the Virginia National Guard are prepared to respond, and urged residents to do the same.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Final day of the Arctic Outbreak of 1996. Birmingham's low was 6 degrees. The temperature at Raleigh, North Carolina dropped to 0 for its coldest February reading ever. Lakeland, Florida recorded 24 degrees. The morning low in Orlando was 26 degrees.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday February 11 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

...Another Soaking...

FAST-MOVING ALABAMA WEATHER: Alabama weather will not get boring in the next several days. Things are moving too fast and changes will come rather often. Today, the main feature is a cold rain. That can be mostly blamed on a low-pressure area that was still under development over the NW Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. A high-pressure system along the Atlantic Seaboard was feeding some easterly winds across the area keeping temperatures on the cool side. In fact, as midafternoon approached, temperatures were in the chilly 40s over North and Central Alabama and only in the low 50s down south. To our east there were even some mid 30s over extreme North Georgia.

Rain was widespread this afternoon all the way from East Texas to Tennessee, North Georgia and part of the Carolinas. Almost all of Alabama was getting rain with the heaviest rain in the central part. By daybreak Friday, that low-pressure area should be over SE Alabama and NW Florida and by Saturday morning it will move all the way to the North Carolina coast. This will bring Alabama some more quick changes. For tonight, a steady cold rain will be widespread and heavy at times. Here in Central Alabama, we estimate the 24-hour total by tomorrow morning will be around 1.25 inches. The rain will persist Friday morning, but diminishing by afternoon.

Clouds may persist most of Saturday, but without rain. Brisk NW winds will be bringing noticeably colder weather with highs only in the 40s and wind gusts up to 25 mph at times. The clouds will be slow to break up, but we should start seeing some sunshine by Sunday afternoon. Please do not get used to that, because clouds will move back in Monday with a chance of rain Monday night and the rain will become widespread again on Tuesday. Another front will be approaching Tuesday approaching an increase in rain. Much colder air will arrive by the middle of next week with lows at night dropping into the 20s.

STORM ALERT 2010: It comes to Walker County Thursday night, February 11 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. Doors open at 5:00 and the program starts at 7:00 and you can be out of there by 8:15. On Thursday, February 18, the first ever program for Hale County will be at the Moundville High School Gym.

AROUND THE USA: The same low-pressure area that is giving Alabama all the rain will be a real headache for many states up the Atlantic Seaboard and into the Midwest. This includes places like Washington, D.C. where several inches of snow will accumulate. A mix of freezing rain and sleet may cause real travel problems in places like Western North Carolina and Virginia as well as the elevated terrain in NW South Carolina. Richmond has already received 18 inches of snow this season—three times the average amount. Washington has received 27 inches, also three times the average. Cold temperature this morning included 40 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska and 8 below at Watertown, New York and Bryce Canyon, Utah.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I know from reading my columns that you probably think that I consider Little Miss Molly the greatest dog in the world. I definitely do not, but that little 9-pound animal is a great part of my life. Every time I have gone through the living area to get coffee this morning, there was no Little Miss Molly to wag her tail and greet me. She is spending the day at the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) getting caught up on her shots and a haircut. When she gets home late this afternoon, she will be so full of enjoyment and will greet us like she had been gone for a week. Life goes on.

...Big Soaking Ahead...

ANOTHER WET-DOWN: Yet another strong storm system has developed in the El Nino enhanced southern branch of the jet stream, and promises to bring lots of rain to our state during the next 36 hours. Rain will move into Alabama this morning, and will be widespread statewide this afternoon and tonight. The rain could be heavy at times, and the latest computer model data hints that most communities will see around two inches of rain, with potential for isolated amounts to three inches. While we don't expect any major flooding issues, some isolated problems will be possible since the ground is relatively saturated. The heaviest rain will move to the east of Alabama tomorrow, but occasional light rain or drizzle will continue across our state.

COLDER AIR FOR THE WEEKEND: Saturday looks like a rather raw day, with low clouds, a chilly north wind, and temperatures holding in the low to mid 40s much of the day. There could be a little drizzle Saturday morning, but most of the day will be dry. Sunday will be brighter with the return of sunshine along with a high in the mid to upper 40s.

TO THE NORTH: While we are soaked here in the Deep South, a big snow event will unfold for the general area from near Indianapolis to Cincinnati to Washington and Baltimore. Some places west of the District of Columbia could see over two feet of snow through Saturday, and freezing rain is possible as far south as the Carolinas and the northeast corner of Georgia.

NEXT WEEK: The next storm system will roll into Alabama early in the week, with rain likely by Monday night and part of the day Tuesday. For now, it looks like the atmosphere will be sufficiently warm for all rain, but some snow is possible over far North Alabama and Tennessee. Then, much colder air will blow into the state in the wake of that system during the middle of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: A cold wave was impacting much of the eastern U.S.; Birmingham's low that morning was 4 degrees. The temperature in Waterloo, Iowa final went above zero at 3pm to break an amazing string of 139 hours below zero that started at 7pm on January 30, 1996. LaCrosse, Wisconsin set its record for longest period of subzero temperatures (144 hours). Baton Rouge, LA. recorded their all-time record high barometric pressure with a reading of 30.82 inches.

The tour will come to Hale County for the first time on Thursday Feb. 18; we will be at Hale County High School in Moundville.

...The Rain Cometh Again...

HERE WE GO AGAIN: You certainly do not have to sit around and wait very long for Alabama weather to change again. A parade of storms across the Southern USA is the culprit. If we were in the midst of a drought, we certainly would not use the world culprit. This afternoon rain was already breaking out across much of Texas and into Louisiana. Another low-pressure area was under development in the Southwest and was forming and growing stronger over Northern Mexico. The low should be over the NW Gulf of Mexico by daybreak and into Southern Mississippi Thursday evening. The low should pass directly across Alabama Friday and finally into Eastern North Carolina by Friday night.

So, what does all this maneuvering mean, you ask. This is a proven good rain producer for Alabama. Remember, our main source of moisture in this part of the country is our good friend, the Gulf of Mexico. We have not changed our thinking on the amount of rain for Central Alabama. We are estimating 1.75 inches in the Thursday/Friday timeframe. However, one of our weather models, the NAM (North American Model), is projecting 2.77 inches for Birmingham.

WHEN WILL IT RAIN: We could see a slight chance after midnight tonight, but as the day unfolds Thursday, rain will become widespread and heavy at times. I believe that the most extensive and heaviest rain will be Thursday afternoon and overnight Thursday night and extending into early Friday. It is going to be a chilly rain, but we do not foresee any snow problems in those two days. It will also be windy with SE winds gusting to 30 mph at times on Friday and almost that windy out of the NW on Saturday. We could have some lingering light rain Saturday morning. There is an outside of a few snowflakes over extreme North Alabama. We will try to push most of the clouds away Sunday. By Sunday morning, temperatures should fall into the upper 20s with some mid 20s in the colder valleys.

STORM ALERT 2010: A huge crowd last night in Gadsden. The next program will be Thursday night, February 11, at Bevill State Community College at Sumiton in Walker County, which is just over the Jefferson County line. Easy to find. Just follow US-78 toward the NW. The program begins at 7:00. The doors open at 5:00.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks good for the Super Bowl in Miami Sunday. Cooler air will move in Saturday night and Sunday should be dry and cooler with temperatures at kickoff close to 70.

RAMBLING AND ROAMING: Here we go again. The National Weather Service in Amarillo is already warning of 3 to 5 inches of snow tonight across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle. They warn that travel will become difficult. That region was hit very hard from the last storm. Historic storms during January and there is still 55 inches of snow on the ground at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I think it is prettier than the south rim. Flagstaff still has 25 inches. The NWS morning Snow Survey showed 61% of the lower 48 with a blanket of snow. That is rather unusual. Cold temperatures this morning: 22 below at International Falls, Minnesota and 40 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I always enjoy the small simple things in nature. Mother Nature shows me plenty. Very early today, as Little Miss Molly and I started our morning walk, there was an interesting drama unfolding. Two beautiful birds with a bright, white chest were perched at the top of a very tall twig with no leaves. I feel sure they were husband and wife. Down among the leaves on the ground, two of their young kindergarten-age children were walking through the leaves. Little Miss Molly stopped to observe. Either the mamma or papa bird silently went into a dive and passed only 3 inches in front of Molly. You just do not do that to my little pal. I saw it happen and grabbed a tighter hold on the leash, because I knew Molly would take off like a jet. I was right. Life goes on.

...A Cool Week Ahead...

ANOTHER BIG RAIN EVENT: Here we go with the second dry day in a row—something that has been fairly uncommon over the past several weeks. However, we are going right back into another significant rain event Thursday and Friday, one that could give us between 1 and 2 inches of rain here in Central Alabama. Some patchy fog across the area this morning will lift and overall today will become partly sunny, but not for long. Clouds will thicken again tonight.

THE RAIN EVENT: Some of that rain could start after midnight tonight then it will become widespread Thursday and become heavy at times. Rain will persist on Friday. Even on Saturday morning there could be come lingering light rain even as it turns windy and colder. It is not out of the question to see a few snowflakes Saturday morning mostly over the northern third of the state. No problems are anticipated.

THE SOUTHERN STORM TRACK: There have been a number of those this winter and our upcoming rain event can be blamed on another one. By tomorrow morning a low will be developing along the Texas coast and it will start pulling a warm front northward across the Gulf of Mexico. That means a lot of moist air will spread over our area. By Thursday night, the low should be near the Louisiana coast and by Friday morning the low should be along the Mississippi/Alabama/NW Florida coast. It will turn into a rather intense low as it moves up the Atlantic Seaboard.

Rain will become widespread across Alabama tomorrow, heavy at times. It will also persist much of the day on Friday. By Friday night, a cold front will sweep through and Saturday will feature NW winds between 12 and 25 mph with temperatures barely getting above 40.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Early arrivals for the Super Bowl in Miami got quite a surprise due to flood-producing rains. The weather for the Super Bowl Sunday between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints should be okay. No rain is expected and the high temperature Sunday afternoon should be about 72. That should be excellent for playing football.

STORM ALERT 2010: It was presented last night in Gadsden. The next one will be next Thursday night at the Bevill State Exhibition Hall in Sumiton. Come early to get a good seat. These have been well attended so far. It starts at 7:00 p.m. and should be over by 8:15 or so.

ROAMING: It was 85 in Miami Tuesday afternoon—the warmest in the USA. Cold temperatures included 17 below at Minot, North Dakota and 40 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska. Whittier, Alaska has 45 inches of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had a busy, busy day yesterday, but I took time out for a long walk with Little Miss Molly that lasted close to 45 minutes. The reason is she likes to leave the walking track with little notice to stick her head in the hedgerow looking for the community rabbit or community cats. She can walk very briskly and still keep her nose only ¼ inch off the ground picking up scents. That amazes me. I do not know what humans would do if they could smell that good. It would probably drive them crazy. Life goes on and it is a most enjoyable adventure with my little dog.

GET READY FOR MORE RAIN: It has been almost a continuing story in the last several weeks—a story of a parade of low-pressure areas moving across the southern states. Some of those come out of the southwest; others form over the NW Gulf of Mexico and move NE. Those usually bring a lot of rain. Again, I am getting the wagon before the mule. We will not have any rain right away. It should start at some point Thursday and become widespread late in the day and all night Thursday night. The rain will be heavy at times. The rain will persist most of Friday. We could even have a little bit of lingering light rain into Saturday morning and it is not totally out of the question to see a few Saturday morning flakes.

Colder air was slowly spreading into the area today and by morning low temperatures will be somewhere between 29 and 33 across Central Alabama and maybe some mid 20s in the colder valleys. We do not see any real mild weather all the way into early next week, but our high in the 40s and 50s will sure feel comfortable when you think about the first half of January and our recent cold.

OUR COMING STORM: By Wednesday afternoon, another low-pressure area will be forming along the lower Texas coast and will move to the Louisiana coast on Thursday. By Friday, the low will be centered in the Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola area and by Saturday morning off the Virginia coast. One of our lovely weather models predicts a total of 2 inches of rain from this whole system for the Birmingham area. We think it might be more like 1.50 to 1.70.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A semi-important football game will be Sunday in Miami called the Super Bowl or something like that. South Florida has been inundated the last couple of days. The town of Cooper City received 7.90 inches in the last 24 hours and there was over 5 inches at Hollywood. We believe things will look better for game time Sunday with high temperatures in the lower 70s and partly sunny dry weather.

ROAMING AND RAMBLING: The weather is always interesting in other parts of the globe. The coldest this morning was 22 below zero at Embarrass and Orr in NE Minnesota. There is 21 inches of snow still on the ground in that general area. In Alaska, it was 35 below at Arctic Village. Good ole Deadhorse had 14 below with visibility of ¼ mile in snow and blowing snow with gusts to 42 mph and a wind chill of 46 below. The daily snow survey this morning showed 63% of the lower 48 states with a snow cover.

STORM ALERT 2010: Remember, it is tonight instead of Thursday night. It will be at the Gadsden Convention Hall starting at 7:00 p.m. Get there early. The doors open at 5:00. Lots of very interesting weather programs and even some prizes.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I think I will start getting Molly out of bed when I get up at 5:00 each morning and have a chat with her and ask her what her plans are for me for the rest of the day. She has a knack of ringing that little backdoor bell (bathroom break) at some of the most inconvenient times for me. I can hear the bell all the way through the house to my office. If I do not respond rather quickly, she goes to option number two which is to come in my office, look up in my eyes and glare at me. If I still do not respond, she goes to option three which is a low muffled bark or growl. By that time, it is urgent, so I get up, grab the leash and away we go. Sometimes we walk a full half mile at top-notch speed. She always expects a treat when we get home. Sometimes I think she has me totally under control, but I do not mind. (Majority owner says to leave out sometimes.) Life goes on.....

STORM ALERT 2010: Our annual severe weather awareness tour comes to
the Gadsden Convention Hall tonight. You will see some amazing Alabama
weather stories; meet a survivor of an Alabama EF-5 tornado, have a
chance to win some free stuff, and meet the entire ABC 33/40 Weather
Team. The show, of course, is free, and it begins at 7:00. The doors
open at 5:00; some early and you can watch me do the weather live on
ABC 33/40 News at 5:00 and 6:00. We hope to see you there.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: After some overnight rain, we expect
improving weather today as morning clouds give way to a partly sunny
afternoon. Temperatures will be very close to seasonal averages, with
a high in the mid 50s this afternoon. Then, after a clear and cold
night with a light freeze, we expect a bright sunny sky tomorrow with
a high back in the mid 50s.

RAIN RETURNS LATER THIS WEEK: Yet another storm forms in the Gulf of
Mexico later this week, and will bring a good rain event to Alabama
and much of the Deep South. Rain should become widespread by Thursday
and Thursday night as the low moves inland, and we are projecting rain
amounts of about 1 inch for this part of Alabama. Light rain and
drizzle is likely at times Friday with temperatures holding in the 40s
along with a blanket of low clouds.

WEEKEND PEEK: We will forecast a clearing sky Saturday, but the day
will be colder with a high only in the low 40s. Sunshine returns in
full force on Sunday with a high in the upper 40s.

GROUNDHOG DAY: Today is Candlemas Day. It is the traditional midpoint
of winter. By early February, Alabama is beginning to really feel the
move toward spring. Days are lengthening and average temperatures are
slowing warming as the amount of sunshine increases each day. At the
beginning of the month, the average high and low for Birmingham is
55/33. By the end of the month, the averages are 62 and 39. On
average, the mercury drops to freezing or below on 13 nights, down
slightly from the 17 in January. Birmingham's coldest day on record
occurred on February 13, 1899, during the mother of all U.S. cold
waves. Records in Birmingham were kept at the U.S. Weather Bureau
Office in Fountain Heights then. If the observation had been made at
the current Airport location, the all time low would probably be -14.
The warmest February reading on record in Birmingham is 83, recorded
on three different dates in history.

February is the middle month in the wettest three month period on
average in the Magic City. During our "rainy season," we typically
receive just under 16 inches of rain. On average, 4.21 inches of rain
falls in Birmingham in February. 17.67 inches fell in February 1961,
the wettest second month observed here. February 1968 saw only 1.20
inches of rain, the driest February ever.

FEBRUARY BEGINS WITHOUT EXTREME COLD: Here we are in a new day and a brand new month. It is the last month of winter unless you go by the official numbers. We consider December, January and February winter.

Regardless, we are beginning this new month without an immediate threat of bitter cold like we had in early January. Indeed, we do not see anything under 25 degrees for the next 7 or 8 days. We will have some chilly nights. Afternoons will not exactly be tank-top weather, but we expect 50s almost every afternoon this week.

PRECIPITATION: Two rain events this week. The first one at some point later tonight, which should be on the light side. Light rain was on the way over parts of Mississippi this afternoon spreading toward the NE. There is no well-defined system with this, so most of Tuesday should be rain free. For the coming week, Wednesday will probably be our championship day with mostly sunshine and highs around 57. The day will start chilly with an average low of about 32, but some upper 20s in the NE Alabama valleys.

OUR MAIN RAIN EVENT: It starts on Thursday (especially afternoon) and continues well into Friday. We could see a two-day total of about 1.50 inches or so.

It was below freezing over much of Alabama this morning. Here is a partial list:

18 Broomtown
22 Millport, Pinson
24 Cullman, Coker
25 Scrougout, Montgomery
26 Bessemer, Huntsville, Noccalula Falls
27 Tuscaloosa
28 Anniston, Shelby County Airport, Springville

LOOKING OUT ACROSS NORTH AMERICA: We do not see any invasions of super bitter cold arctic air from the Great Northwest country, at least for a while. Rather amazing that the temperature this morning was 19 above zero at Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. That is some of the area that we watch like a hawk during the winter for big cold air build-ups. Temperature extremes include 76 in Miami Sunday and 24 below zero this morning at both Bigfork, Minnesota and Beaver Creek, Alaska. It was 26 below at Ft. Yukon and Point Lay. The latest snow survey shows 69% of the lower 48 with a snow cover this morning. I believe that is the biggest number so far this winter. There is now pretty much a solid cover from Northern South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas and the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle northward into Canada.

SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS: Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina had a low of 7 this morning with 6 inches of snow.

STORM ALERT 2010: The second installment is in Gadsden Tuesday night (not Thursday) at the Convention Hall. It starts at 7:00 p.m., so get there early.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little girl, Miss Molly, for some reason suddenly likes to chase birds. When we stepped out the backdoor this morning she saw and heard two cute little birds chirping up on the walking track 30 yards away. She ran as fast as she could, which means I did too, to try to catch them. I am in a silly mood today and I have often wondered what it would be like if I was the little puppy and Miss Molly was the grown adult. She would take me around the walking track with a leash around my neck and dragging a blue scoop behind her. It is amazing what a simple life she lives and she has taught me a lot about that. Our Sunday School lesson was on that subject yesterday. I have always been a simple person. Life goes on....

...Milder Today...

Seasonable. That is a good word to describe the sensible weather we will experience across Central Alabama for the next few days. Highs will be in the 50s, lows in the 30s through Wednesday. We will deal with a few generally light showers tonight and Tuesday morning, then a more general rain late in the week, followed by colder weather for the weekend.

THROUGH WEDNESDAY: We're starting out in the upper 20s on average across Central Alabama. Expect a good bit of sunshine today with a high around 55 degrees. Clouds will increase late in the day as an upper level trough slides across the area tonight and Tuesday. Rainfall will be very light and spotty. Tuesday will look a lot like today, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 50s again. It's more of the same for Wednesday, with highs in the 50s after a morning low near freezing.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: By Thursday morning, a surface low will be developing near Brownville, Texas. This low will move northeast, spreading showers into the state during the day on Thursday. Rainfall amounts will again be light. Some more widespread rain will spread into the state Thursday night as the low moves to south of New Orleans. The low will grow stronger on Friday as it moves into southern Georgia, which will intensify the rains over Central sections of the state. One and one half to two inch storm totals should be common.

WEEKEND PEEK: The low will be winding up as it hooks up the East Coast, becoming quite a formidable storm. Light rain and drizzle will be left over on Saturday, even as colder air spreads into Alabama on the back side of the low. We will be watching atmospheric temperature profiles for the possibility that the precipitation would mix with or change over to a little light snow or flurries on Saturday and Saturday night, but no problems are expected.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly podcast that's all about the weather. Each week, several of the folks from AlabamaWx.com and Kevin Selle are joined by a national guest panelist and some of the greatest weather minds in the world. Last week, it was the smartest radar guy around, Les Lemon. This week, Brian Peters will lead a discussion with Kevin Pitts from the ARRL and Skywarn volunteer Rob Macedo from Taunton, Massachusetts about amateur radio and weather. Listen to the show for free at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. You can also follow us on Twitter @wxhistorian.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Tornado touched down at Commerce Landing along the Mississippi River in Tunica County, Mississippi. The storm cut an 8-mile path to Clark, Mississippi. Seventeen people were killed in a plantation school at Commerce Landing, making it the third deadliest school tornado disaster in U.S. History. The heroic teacher died trying to save her students by shepherding them into ditches. The rebuilt school was named after her . One dead child was blown one half mile. The event was not officially called a tornado at the time. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

Things started off gray across much of Central Alabama on this last day of January. Skies cleared during the morning, giving way to sunshine in most spots. Clouds were slowest to break up across the Black Belt of South Central Alabama. Temperatures are in the 40s this afternoon across the entire state, as cold air continues to flow in on northerly winds. Tennessee Valley locations struggled to make it to 40 degrees. Lows tonight will fall into the upper 20s under clear skies.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature increasing clouds by afternoon as a trough moves eastward out of the southern Plains. This disturbance may shake out a few sprinkles Monday night into early Tuesday across Central Alabama. A low pressure system will form over the eastern Gulf and move northeastward out to sea. It will spread rain into the Carolinas and perhaps some light snow back into Virginia Tuesday night. Because of its track, it will not be a major storm. We will return to partly cloudy and seasonable conditions on Wednesday, but clouds will thicken again on Thursday and rain will return to Alabama during the afternoon. Looks like a good soaking rain for Thursday night as the low tracks up into Alabama before moving into Tennessee.

WEEKEND: Showers will hang around on Friday as the low runs into an atmospheric traffic jam and is only able to move slowly northward into Kentucky. Colder air will continue to flow into the state. Highs on Saturday will be in the 40s and Sunday may see temperatures not getting out of the 30s. There could be periods of drizzle or snow flurries over the weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: Monday night's show will include Guest Panelist Thom Benson from the Tennessee Aquarium. The former television meteorologist is the Communications Director for the landmark Chattanoooga attraction. He will be talking about their February exhibition "The Wild Side of Weather." Many of the 10,000 animals that live at the Aquarium have weather folklore stories about them, and Thom has combined their stories into a fascinating exhibit The Guest WeatherBrains will be amateur radio experts that will talk about the hobby and its role in weather observation gathering, severe weather spotting and disaster response. Subscribe to the show on iTunes, or try it out at www.WeatherBrains.com. Always free and always fun!

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: After extremely warm temperatures the day before, the mercury plummeted 85 degrees in 36 hours at Great Falls MT. Valentine NE recorded a temperature drop from 70 degrees to zero in just 9 hours. The extreme cold caused the brakes on a Montana freight train to fail. The train rolled into Helena and exploded. Extensive damage resulted. The barometer rose to 31.85 inches at Northway Alaska, establishing the all time highest reading for the North American continent. The air temperature at Northway was a numbing -46F. When pressures this high occur, commercial aircraft often have to be grounded because their altimeters cannot be set that high. Black ice is an insidious weather hazard. It forms when leftover moisture freezes on road surfaces. It is called black ice because it is virtually invisible. It is deadly because it can cause vehicles to spin out of control with no warning. Isolated black ice will be a problem through the late morning across Central and North Alabama. Be careful when driving through mid-morning. Give yourself extra time to make it to your destination this morning and be alert for slippery patches on roads and especially bridges.

FREEZING FOG: Clearing and cold conditions over northern Mississippi and Western Tennessee late last night and early this morning led to the development of fog that is freezing on contact with exposed surfaces. This can confront drivers with the double whammy of greatly reduced visibility and patchy ice, especially on bridges. Fortunately, cloud cover t hrough most of the night prevented Alabama drivers from dealing with this threat.

SUNSHINE RETURNS: Sunny skies will return across the area for your Sunday, but it will still be chilly, as cold air continues to be transported into the area. Highs will be in the 40s for the most part.

NEW WORK WEEK: Monday will feature partly cloudy skies, but there could be a shower or two Monday night and early Tuesday. Wednesday returns to partly cloudy conditions, but skies will be on the increase Thursday, with rain returning Thursday night. Showers will remain in the forecast through Friday as a surface low moves into Georgia. Dry conditions will return for the weekend.

STORM ALERT TOUR: Our severe weather tour across Alabama rolls along; we will be in Gadsden at the Convention Hall next Tuesday (NOT Thursday). You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

WEATHERBRAINS: Make sure you listen to this past week's episode of WeatherBrains, the weekly netcast that's all about weather. Legendary radar expert Les Lemon was the Guest WeatherBrain, talking about his career of research into severe weather and radar. He also told a story about the Kansas City tornado in 1957 that nearly hit his family's home. This week, we will be talking about amateur radio and its importance in severe weather reporting and disaster response with Allen Pitts (W1AGP) from the American Radio Relay League and Rob Macedo (KD1CY), a SKYWARN leader from Massachusetts. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.

TORNADOLESS MONTH IN JANUARY 2003: No tornadoes were reported in the United States during January 2003, the first time that any month had no reported tornadoes since November 1976. The first tornado would occur on February 15th in Louisiana. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
