TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE OF A DREARY DAY: If you looked up the meaning of a dreary day in the dictionary, it might refer you to February 5, 2010 in Alabama.

She did it to us again. I am speaking about our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, who we could not do without but she has been a pest lately sending a whole series of low-pressure areas inland for them to track NE across the SE states. That scenario is an automatic success for producing a lot of rain.

I doubt very seriously if you could find a single square foot of dry soil in Alabama today unless you looked under a house. We had a state-wide drenching yesterday and overnight. Many communities received over 2 inches and a few over 3 inches. We will pick these 6 totals that are representative around the state:

2.05 Birmingham Airport
2.42 Helena
3.76 Auburn
2.13 Tuscaloosa
2.36 Mobile Regional Airport
2.70 Selma

As the low-pressure area moved inland across SE Alabama, there was a lot of wind overnight, including a gust to 60 mph at Jacksonville in Calhoun County. This afternoon, the low-pressure area extended along the Alabama-Georgia border and was moving NE. This is going to play havoc in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Here in Alabama, the deck of clouds is going to act very stubborn and not completely break up until Sunday. Low clouds draped the state today like a wet blanket. I was up at St. Vincent's East in NE Birmingham this morning and the entire hospital complex was in the clouds.

Colder air will be spreading eastward across Alabama tonight with overnight lows in the mid 30s. Look for cloudy and colder weather Saturday with some scattered light rain and NW winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Our colder temperatures will be Sunday morning averaging around 28.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: You do not want to hear this, but more rain moves in Monday night and becomes more widespread on Tuesday. It will be another cold rain. There is an outside chance that it could become mixed with a little light snow over extreme North Alabama Tuesday night.

THE WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE DILEMMA: It is a big one. The most snow ever in the history of Washington weather records was 28 inches in January 1922. The NWS is projecting 20-30 inches tonight and Saturday with 14-24 in Atlantic City and 3-7 in New York City. There will be a lot of blowing and drifting snow and even a chance of some blizzard conditions.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks good for the late Sunday kickoff of the Super Bowl in Miami between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. Sunday should be mostly sunshine with a high of 72 with clear weather Sunday night. So, for the kickoff, it should be about 68 falling through the 60s in the 50s for the second half.

MISCELLANEOUS: The next Storm Alert 2010 program will be next Thursday night and 7:00 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. The program ends at 8:15. The door opens at 5:00. Come early for a good seat...the coldest temperature in the lower 48 this morning was 4 below zero at Berlin, New Hampshire...in Alaska, Ft. Yukon took the honors with 44 below...62.3% of the lower 48 had a snow cover this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly did not get home from the Puppy Beauty Shop yesterday until after dark. Strangely enough, she shakes with fright when we take her, but does not on the way home. Despite the darkness, she recognized her community as she got closer and that tail started thumping against the car door. As we drove down our street, she stretched her neck looking in all directions. She is a homebody....
