...No Sunshine Until Sunday...

DAMP FRIDAY: The storm system that brought a soaking rain to Alabama overnight will move on to the east today, taking the heaviest rain with it. However, moist air will continue to cover Alabama, and we will mention periods of light rain or drizzle today with low clouds and temperatures hovering around the 50 degree mark much of the day.

OUR WEEKEND: Colder air invades Alabama late tonight and tomorrow; looks like we hold in the low to mid 40s all day tomorrow with clouds hanging tough and a chilly north breeze. There might even be a few sprinkles tomorrow morning, especially north of Birmingham. Sunshine finally returns in full force Sunday with a high in the upper 40s.

PARADE OF STORMS TO CONTINUE: The active southern branch of the jet stream will keep things hopping next week. The next system will bring a chance of rain to Alabama Monday night and Tuesday, followed by a shot of much colder air by mid-week. Another storm system blows in here toward the end of the week, and it has some potential to bring a chance of wintry weather to parts of the Deep South, but it is way too early to be specific.

TO THE NORTH: A major snow event will unfold today in the general region from Indianapolis to Cincinnati to Washington and Baltimore. Snow amounts of 1 to 2 feet are likely for the region around the District of Columbia, with blizzard conditions possible for cities like Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell already has declared a state of emergency; Wednesday's declaration authorizes state agencies to assist local governments responding to a storm that could bring high winds and up to 20 inches of snow to the northern and western parts of the state. McDonnell said road crews and the Virginia National Guard are prepared to respond, and urged residents to do the same.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Final day of the Arctic Outbreak of 1996. Birmingham's low was 6 degrees. The temperature at Raleigh, North Carolina dropped to 0 for its coldest February reading ever. Lakeland, Florida recorded 24 degrees. The morning low in Orlando was 26 degrees.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday February 11 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat.
