STORM ALERT 2010: Our annual severe weather awareness tour comes to
the Gadsden Convention Hall tonight. You will see some amazing Alabama
weather stories; meet a survivor of an Alabama EF-5 tornado, have a
chance to win some free stuff, and meet the entire ABC 33/40 Weather
Team. The show, of course, is free, and it begins at 7:00. The doors
open at 5:00; some early and you can watch me do the weather live on
ABC 33/40 News at 5:00 and 6:00. We hope to see you there.
THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: After some overnight rain, we expect
improving weather today as morning clouds give way to a partly sunny
afternoon. Temperatures will be very close to seasonal averages, with
a high in the mid 50s this afternoon. Then, after a clear and cold
night with a light freeze, we expect a bright sunny sky tomorrow with
a high back in the mid 50s.
RAIN RETURNS LATER THIS WEEK: Yet another storm forms in the Gulf of
Mexico later this week, and will bring a good rain event to Alabama
and much of the Deep South. Rain should become widespread by Thursday
and Thursday night as the low moves inland, and we are projecting rain
amounts of about 1 inch for this part of Alabama. Light rain and
drizzle is likely at times Friday with temperatures holding in the 40s
along with a blanket of low clouds.
WEEKEND PEEK: We will forecast a clearing sky Saturday, but the day
will be colder with a high only in the low 40s. Sunshine returns in
full force on Sunday with a high in the upper 40s.
GROUNDHOG DAY: Today is Candlemas Day. It is the traditional midpoint
of winter. By early February, Alabama is beginning to really feel the
move toward spring. Days are lengthening and average temperatures are
slowing warming as the amount of sunshine increases each day. At the
beginning of the month, the average high and low for Birmingham is
55/33. By the end of the month, the averages are 62 and 39. On
average, the mercury drops to freezing or below on 13 nights, down
slightly from the 17 in January. Birmingham's coldest day on record
occurred on February 13, 1899, during the mother of all U.S. cold
waves. Records in Birmingham were kept at the U.S. Weather Bureau
Office in Fountain Heights then. If the observation had been made at
the current Airport location, the all time low would probably be -14.
The warmest February reading on record in Birmingham is 83, recorded
on three different dates in history.
February is the middle month in the wettest three month period on
average in the Magic City. During our "rainy season," we typically
receive just under 16 inches of rain. On average, 4.21 inches of rain
falls in Birmingham in February. 17.67 inches fell in February 1961,
the wettest second month observed here. February 1968 saw only 1.20
inches of rain, the driest February ever.
