HERE WE GO AGAIN: You certainly do not have to sit around and wait very long for Alabama weather to change again. A parade of storms across the Southern USA is the culprit. If we were in the midst of a drought, we certainly would not use the world culprit. This afternoon rain was already breaking out across much of Texas and into Louisiana. Another low-pressure area was under development in the Southwest and was forming and growing stronger over Northern Mexico. The low should be over the NW Gulf of Mexico by daybreak and into Southern Mississippi Thursday evening. The low should pass directly across Alabama Friday and finally into Eastern North Carolina by Friday night.
So, what does all this maneuvering mean, you ask. This is a proven good rain producer for Alabama. Remember, our main source of moisture in this part of the country is our good friend, the Gulf of Mexico. We have not changed our thinking on the amount of rain for Central Alabama. We are estimating 1.75 inches in the Thursday/Friday timeframe. However, one of our weather models, the NAM (North American Model), is projecting 2.77 inches for Birmingham.
WHEN WILL IT RAIN: We could see a slight chance after midnight tonight, but as the day unfolds Thursday, rain will become widespread and heavy at times. I believe that the most extensive and heaviest rain will be Thursday afternoon and overnight Thursday night and extending into early Friday. It is going to be a chilly rain, but we do not foresee any snow problems in those two days. It will also be windy with SE winds gusting to 30 mph at times on Friday and almost that windy out of the NW on Saturday. We could have some lingering light rain Saturday morning. There is an outside of a few snowflakes over extreme North Alabama. We will try to push most of the clouds away Sunday. By Sunday morning, temperatures should fall into the upper 20s with some mid 20s in the colder valleys.
STORM ALERT 2010: A huge crowd last night in Gadsden. The next program will be Thursday night, February 11, at Bevill State Community College at Sumiton in Walker County, which is just over the Jefferson County line. Easy to find. Just follow US-78 toward the NW. The program begins at 7:00. The doors open at 5:00.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks good for the Super Bowl in Miami Sunday. Cooler air will move in Saturday night and Sunday should be dry and cooler with temperatures at kickoff close to 70.
RAMBLING AND ROAMING: Here we go again. The National Weather Service in Amarillo is already warning of 3 to 5 inches of snow tonight across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle. They warn that travel will become difficult. That region was hit very hard from the last storm. Historic storms during January and there is still 55 inches of snow on the ground at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I think it is prettier than the south rim. Flagstaff still has 25 inches. The NWS morning Snow Survey showed 61% of the lower 48 with a blanket of snow. That is rather unusual. Cold temperatures this morning: 22 below at International Falls, Minnesota and 40 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I always enjoy the small simple things in nature. Mother Nature shows me plenty. Very early today, as Little Miss Molly and I started our morning walk, there was an interesting drama unfolding. Two beautiful birds with a bright, white chest were perched at the top of a very tall twig with no leaves. I feel sure they were husband and wife. Down among the leaves on the ground, two of their young kindergarten-age children were walking through the leaves. Little Miss Molly stopped to observe. Either the mamma or papa bird silently went into a dive and passed only 3 inches in front of Molly. You just do not do that to my little pal. I saw it happen and grabbed a tighter hold on the leash, because I knew Molly would take off like a jet. I was right. Life goes on.....
