...Strong Storms This Afternoon...

Boy, that derecho that tore across Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and
Illinois on Friday was something else! Widespread 70-90 mph winds
were reported with a gust to 106 mph at Carbondale, Illinois. It
looked like a mini-hurricane on radar, and some meteorologists are
referring to it as an "inland hurricane." At least three fatalities
were reported.

STRONG STORMS THIS AFTERNOON: Nothing like that across Alabama this
afternoon, although we will be watching a developing
thunderstorm complex over Oklahoma. It will likely get into Alabama
this evening A weakening storm complex brought heavy rain, gusty
winds and lightning to North Alabama morning, but this system weakened
as it moved eastward. Additional storms will form in the warm, soupy
airmass across Alabama through the afternoon and into this evening as
a frontal system nears the area from the northwest. Some of the
storms could be severe with damaging winds and hail. Watch out for
deadly lightning also, particularly with all the outdoor events going
on. The front should sag into Central Alabama during the overnight as
we monitor that thunderstorm complex coming in from the west.

YOUR MOTHER'S DAY FORECAST: The frontal system will be south of the
I-20 corridor on Sunday. South of the boundary, strong to severe
thunderstorms will be possible again. North of the front, rain and
storms will form again. Skies will be mostly cloudy, although some
sunshine will reappear over North and North Central Alabama Sunday
afternoon. Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 70s behind the front,
with some readings reaching to near 80 to the south.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: The frontal system will still be hanging around to
our south on Monday, but more showers and storms will likely form
across Central Alabama. Finally, drier continental air will begin to
flow into Alabama Monday night as our upper flow buckles and becomes
northwesterly. This will spell some fabulous spring weather for
Tuesday, with sunny skies, less humidity and highs in the 70s. But
the respite will be short lived, with rain expected back across the
area by Wednesday. And there are some signs that the break will be
even shorter in duration than that. The GFS hints that the front
comes back north Tuesday afternoon, bringing showers.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRE SITUATION: The fire situation in Southern
California around Santa Barbara is becoming less critical this
afternoon as the Sundowner winds are greatly diminished today. They
are called Sundowner winds because they tend to intensify around
sundown each day as northerly winds roar down the valleys between the
mountains and ocean when high pressure builds to the north of Santa
Barbara. They are a variation of the Santa Ana wind.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: A major tornado outbreak from Texas to
Michigan. This was one of the worst days of tornado activity in U.S.
History. 28 tornadoes counted. Part of Poplar Bluff MO was
destroyed by an F4 tornado. 98 people were killed and 300 injured in
Pine Bluff, including 21 in the Melbourne Hotel. This day would rank
as the fifth most deadly in Arkansas history, with 68 fatalities.

...Strong Storms Possible Today...

Thunderstorms will be on the menu as we head into this Mother's Day
Weekend 2009. A southward sagging cold front will trigger storms
today in a warm and humid May airmass across North and North Central
Alabama. Expect more of the same tomorrow as the front continues its
snail-like push to the south.

RATHER RARE WATCHES: PDS stands for Particularly Dangerous
Situation. PDS tornado watches are something that we are used to.
But did you know there can be a PDS severe thunderstorm watch? They
are issued when there is a threat of widespread damaging winds, as
with a derecho. They are especially rare because they are only issued
when the tornado threat is expected to remain low. We only see a
couple per year on average. Several were issued yesterday morning
from Kansas down through Arkansas as a powerful derecho moved
southeastward. We are hearing that term "derecho" a little too much
this spring.

YOUR WEEKEND: The upper flow across the Southeast United States is
fairly zonal, or from west to east. This band of westerlies is
separating cooler, continental air to the north from the warm, humid
air to the south. The boundary between the two airmasses will sag
south today as disturbances slide by the north. This will trigger
storm development today across North and North Central Alabama. There
is a cap, or lid on the atmosphere, in the form of a layer of warm,
dry air aloft. This will limit storm development this afternoon, but
once they form, they could quickly become strong to severe,
particularly over the north. Damaging wind and hail will be the main
threat. More storms will form on Mother's Day in the warm, humid
airmass as the front settles southward. These storms will likely
become severe as well, mainly over Central sections of the state.

A BREAK NEXT WEEK: There are good indications that the boundary will
shift far enough to the south Monday night to allow a cooler and drier
airmass to filter into Alabama. This will provide a welcome break
from our early season heat and humidity preview. Highs will back off
into the 70s to near 80 and lows will be in the 50s into midweek.
Moisture will begin to return by Thursday, along with a chance for
showers and storms. Depending on the front's forward progress,
showers and storms could continue into Friday.

SNEAK PEEK INTO THE WEEKEND AND BEYOND: Not only could they continue
into Friday, but those showers could continue through the weekend as
we get stuck with reruns of Battle of the Airmasses 2009. So we will
keep shower and thunderstorms chances in the forecast for Saturday and
Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: High winds blew sixteen of the thirty cars of
a BNSF double stack container train off the tracks near Belle Plaine
in southern Kansas south of Wichita., blocking a key rail route for
more than a day. The train, bound from Chicago to Southern California
was derailed by winds estimated at over 60 mph.

...High Octane Weather...

A COOL DOWN STARTING SUNDAY: We have certainly had some high-octane
weather for what seems like forever. Temperatures have consistently
been too warm for this time of year occasionally reaching the mid or
upper 80s. But take heart, we actually believe a cool front will fight
its way into Alabama late in the weekend and give us some pleasant
temperatures. By Tuesday, the front may even push into South Alabama.

Meanwhile, we have other worries—more thunderstorms. We could see one
later this evening or overnight, but there is a better chance up in
the Tennessee Valley. There will be a few thunderstorms as the day
goes on Saturday with increasing Saturday night. A few of those could
be strong to severe. There is a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms Sunday, especially Sunday night and some of those could
be strong to severe. Finally, the showers and storms should diminish
and end at some point Monday morning. Our best weather day will be
Tuesday when we have highs in the mid to upper 70s and lows in the mid
50s and less humid conditions.

THE MONTGOMERY FLASH FLOOD: It was the most severe flash flood that I
can remember in 7 or 8 years. Photographic evidence shows that
hundreds of automobiles were floating. We do not know the final story
on the Capitol Building, but there were some news reports that the
major flooding caused some structural damage. It appears that parts of
Montgomery got over 7 inches of rain in about 3 hours and some
indications of over 10 inches from the storm.

BIG EVENT IN MID-COUNTRY: A very well pronounced derecho played havoc
across parts of Arkansas and Missouri this morning and the violent
weather was spreading eastward this afternoon across parts of Kentucky
and Tennessee where Tornado Watches were in effect. It seems that
Missouri was the hardest hit of all as the violent bow echo moved east
over mainly the southern half of that state. There were a number of
reports of straight-line wind gusts between 80 and 90 mph and a lot of
property damage. A few tornadoes were also involved. That is the
second derecho in only one week. They are relatively rare. Last
weekend a long haul one moved from East Texas to West Georgia
uprooting literally thousands of trees, including in a number of
counties in Central Alabama.

WILDFIRES: They are vicious and numerous homes have already been
burned. The fires were flaring up again in Southern California today
and mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for 30,000 people.
Can you imagine?

ELSEWHERE: 109 in Pecos, Texas was the hottest yesterday. Coldest
this morning was 12 inside Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Well, I finally had a chance to make up
to Little Miss Molly with several ballgames in the last 24 hours. She
was as happy as a lark. She does not ask for much except for a few
things she insists such as ballgames, belly rubs, head rubs. She keeps
trying to trick me into giving her extra treats when they are not part
of the rules. Our walks have been very pleasant. I believe our bird
population is much greater than last year at this time, but we want to
hear more from our old crow friends. Life goes on.

...Warmest Weather So Far in 2009...

GETTING CLOSE TO 90: Summer-like weather will headline our forecast
today; most communities will rise into the upper 80s this afternoon, I
would not be shocked to near of a few places in West Alabama with a
high of 90 or 91. Humidity values will stay high, so it will feel more
like a day in late June or early July. During the heat of the
afternoon, a few thunderstorms could pop up over the state; where they
do form the storms will be strong with lots of lightning, but they
should also be rather widely spaced, and most communities will be dry.

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND: The weather won't change too much tomorrow;
another very warm and humid day with some risk of isolated storms
during the afternoon; the high will be well in the 80s. But, tomorrow
night, with a surface front approaching from the north, a band of
showers and storms should move into the state, dropping slowly
southward before dissipating by early Sunday. Then, on Sunday, with
the boundary just north of here, we expect a mostly cloudy sky with a
good chance of a few showers and storms during the day. Sunday won't
be as warm with a high in the upper 70s due to the clouds and showers.

NEXT WEEK: We will maintain a decent chance of showers and
thunderstorms on Monday, it now looks like drier air will move into
Alabama Monday night. If this happens, then we will enjoy a sunny sky
on Tuesday and Wednesday with cooler nights, lower humidity values,
and a break from showers and storms. The muggy, tropical air will
return over the latter half of the week, however.

WEDNESDAY'S STORMS: A total of 12 tornadoes were confirmed across
Alabama on Wednesday, including 9 by the Birmingham NWS office, and 3
by the Huntsville office. Most of the tornadoes in this part of the
state were in Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.

BIG TIME FLOODING: Parts of Montgomery received over 7 inches of rain
yesterday morning from a nearly stationary thunderstorm complex, with
serious flash flooding from downtown through the eastern part of the
city. Authorities are still looking for the body of a man they believe
died flood waters swept his car into a drainage ditch at the
intersection of McGehee Road and Debbie Drive. The State Legislature
went into recess and the State House was evacuated. Workers also shut
off power to the building yesterday morning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Mother's Day tornado outbreak of 57 tornadoes
across the Mississippi Valley. 22 twisters in Iowa was a record. The
tornadoes were accompanied by over 200 reports of large hail and
damaging winds. Terre Bonne MO reported baseball-sized hail. 80-mph
winds at Rockford IL trapped a person in a portable toilet.
Fortunately, no deaths were reported with the outbreak.

...Muggy Is the Word...

MAJOR FLASH FLOOD IN MONTGOMERY: Where I grew up, there was an old
saying that it was so humid that you could cut it with a knife. Not
quite that bad yet in Alabama, but our dew point tomorrow is projected
to be between 65 and 68. So, if the high temperatures reach the mid to
upper 80s as expected, it is going to feel a little uncomfortable.

Now back to things more important. One of the worst flash floods in a
long time occurred in Montgomery this morning. There was also flooding
in several other counties, especially east and SE of Montgomery.
Photographs available this afternoon show some parking lots with the
water up to the door handles with numerous cars flooded. Major
flooding occurred in many parts of the downtown area. We saw one
report where there was 3 feet of water in the basement of the Capitol
and the building was closed and evacuated. There were a number of
reports of 7 to 8 inches of rain in just a few hours and, based on
radar estimates, some places received more than that.
Mercifully, the storms moved away this afternoon, but there were other
problems east and SE of Montgomery where several Severe

Thunderstorm Warnings were posted and even a few Tornado Warnings. For
example, a Tornado Warning was in effect for the Eufaula area at one
time this afternoon.

THE REST OF ALABAMA: Last night a line of storms developed across the
northern counties from border to border. That line moved southward
very slowly producing lots of fireworks and locally heavy rain.
Anniston Airport received over 1 inch of rain when the storms moved
through and Gadsden Airport around 1 inch. The thunder and lightning
kept a lot of folks awake. By daybreak, the big cluster of storms is
concentrated around the Montgomery area and the forward motion slowed
greatly. That is when the real troubles began.

NOW WHAT? Across North and Central Alabama, a few isolated
thunderstorms were forming this afternoon. We believe the chance of
any one community getting a storm is rather slim through Saturday. The
thunderstorms will increase in number on Sunday and Sunday night and
there is a good chance also on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center had
a Slight Risk for about the south half of Alabama today for severe
weather. Fortunately, tomorrow has a Slight Risk to the NW of Alabama.

LOOKING ELSEWHERE: Would you believe there was an EF0 tornado at
Willard, Utah over the weekend? It was on the NE shore of Great Salt
Lake. There was some damage to several homes. Thanks to our friend,
Matt Marshall who lives there, for letting us know. Willard is in
extreme North Utah NE of Great Salt Lake. Hottest in the USA yesterday
was 107 at Del Rio and Laredo, Texas. Those locations are subject to
long, very hot summers. Coldest this morning was 29 at Brice Canyon,
Utah and zero at Barter Island, Alaska. Whittier, Alaska snow cover is
now down to 43 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: There was conclusive evidence that a
rabbit spent the night in the edge of our backyard. Little Miss Molly
sniffed out that evidence early this morning, but the rabbit was
nowhere to be seen. That would be a strict no-no for my little pal.
Late last night when that line of thunderstorms rumbled slowly by, she
was already in bed asleep. She dove off the bed really fast wanting to
go to one of her safe spots, but the majority owner got her back in
bed and held her close and cuddled her in a blanket. Life goes on
despite the mean storms.

...Warm and Humid Air Hangs Over Alabama...

SUMMER-LIKE WEATHER: Temperatures held in the 70s across much of
Alabama yesterday due to clouds and storms, but today we expect a
little more sunshine, which should push temperatures into the mid 80s
this afternoon. Dewpoints will remain high, meaning summer-like
humidity conditions, which also means potential for more scattered
showers and thunderstorms across our state. Most of them should come
during the peak of the daytime heating process this afternoon, and
some could be on the strong side. In fact, SPC has a pretty part of
Alabama in a slight severe weather risk (their standard risk) today;
the main threats should be from damaging winds and hail, but if we
have a few lingering boundaries around there could be an isolated
tornado threat. The severe weather should not be as widespread as
yesterday, and it seems like the most numerous storms this afternoon
should over the southern half of the state.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Not much change; our weather will remain
warm and very humid, and each day there will be some risk of at least
a passing shower or thunderstorm. For now, it looks like the storms
tomorrow will be rather isolated, but then becoming a little more
numerous over the weekend as another surface boundary approaches from
the north. Highs will remain mostly in the 80s, about five degrees
above average values for early May in Alabama. There should be some
decent intervals of sunshine when storms around not around, so the
weekend won't be a complete wash-out.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: I would imagine the guys at the National Weather
Service are about as exhausted as those of us in the TV weather
business. More survey crews will be needed today to assess damage from
yesterday's storms; some of the most significant damage was across
Tuscaloosa and Walker Counties, and based on viewer photographs there
is pretty much no doubt the damage in the Jasper/Boldo area in Walker
County was from a small tornado. To the north, the NWS in Huntsville
was able to identify a EF-2 tornado that caused significant property
damage along a 11 mile path across Limestone and Madison Counties in
the Tennessee Valley. Some of the most serious damage was in Madison,
which is just west of Huntsville. Flooding was also an issue in
places; our Skywatcher at Hamilton in Marion County reported 3.09"
yesterday; other totals included 2.82" at Holly Pond and 2.61" at
Scrougeout (northeast of Gadsden). Amounts over East Alabama were much
lighter; the total at Weaver was only 0.25".

ON THIS DATE IN 1840: A mile wide tornado destroys the Mississippi
River town of Natchez, Mississippi about noon. 317 are left dead in
Natchez alone. This was the worst tornado in United States history to
occur before the establishment of the Weather Bureau. Horses
reportedly were burst open by the storm.

...May Acting Like March...

OVERDOSE ON STORMS: When will it ever end, we ask? This has been a
very active spring storm season and we got whammed again today. We
knew it was going to happen, but I did not think some of the heavier
rain amounts would materialize.

There was so much rain before daybreak that some roads in North Blount
County were flooded and others were washed out. A bridge was washed
out in Boaz. However, our main problem throughout the morning was
storm damage. That very intense line of thunderstorms was near Memphis
hours before dawn. It moved slowly but steadily east and SE. I do not
believe there is a dry acre of land anywhere between Memphis and
Birmingham. The rain came down so hard that numerous Flash Flood
Warnings were issued.

The north half of Alabama had a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until noon.
By late morning, that had been changed to a Tornado Watch until 6:00
p.m. today. The Tornado Watch included numerous counties across the
central and south part of the state.

DAMAGE REPORTS: We have listed a number of those on the BLOG and NWS
survey teams will again be out checking the damage and determining how
many tornadoes we had or how much was straight-line wind damage. Those
guys are excellent about getting that done in a hurry and over the
next few days we will post their reports on our BLOG. It appears that
some of the more significant damage was over West/Central Alabama in
Walker, Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Marion and possibly parts of Jefferson
County. At an automobile dealership in Jasper, 50 cars were damaged.
At a nearby bank, the drive through was heavily damaged. Some police
cars were damaged in Cordova. There were numerous reports of trees and
power lines down in places like Tuscaloosa, Jasper and North Jefferson
County. This is by no means a complete list.

NOW WHAT? After the initial bad storms moved east, the sun came out
for a while and the air was becoming even more unstable. A second
batch of storms came out of Mississippi and those were entering West
Alabama this afternoon from Franklin County southward. Places like
Tuscaloosa and Birmingham will get another round of moderate to heavy
rain late this afternoon and this evening. Starting tomorrow showers
and storms will thin out, but there will be some each day.

ELSEWHERE: North and Central Mississippi had a bad time with the
weather last night like we did. A few cold temperatures this morning
included 29 at Brice Canyon, Utah and Yellowstone National Park. Good
old Deadhorse, Alaska had 5 below zero. Checking our daily snow depth
at Whittier, Alaska, they have 43 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our neighbor across the traffic circle
got a very cute little puppy recently. He does not weigh as much as
Little Miss Molly. They immediately fell in love. When I take Molly
for a walk by their fence, they rub noses through an opening in the
fence. Last night that little guy squeezed through an opening in the
fence after dark and came all the way to the back of our house and was
scratching on the screen door. As far as Molly was concerned, this was
the beginning of World War III. I have never seen her more upset,
because she could not see what was making the noise. We returned the
little guy to our neighbor. All is well. Life goes on.

...Strong To Severe Storms Today...

ANOTHER ACTIVE WEATHER DAY: Numerous showers and thunderstorms will
make for a wet and story May day for Alabama, and based on the
projected atmospheric profile we could very well be dealing with a few
severe thunderstorms. At this point, it looks like the greatest risk
of strong to severe storms will come during the afternoon and evening
hours, but a few strong storms could very well rumble this morning.
The stronger storms today will be capable of producing large hail and
damaging winds, and a few isolated tornadoes will be possible. It is
likely that watches and warnings will be needed, and everybody should
be in a position to hear them as the day rolls along. We should also
mention the threat of heavy rain; we are in a pure tropical airmass,
and the heavier storms could easily drop one inch of rain in only 30
minutes or so. Flash flood issues are possible where heavy storms
repeatedly move over the same area.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Storms should diminish late tonight, but
we will remain in a very moist environment for the rest of the week
and the weekend, so we will have some risk of at least scattered
showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. Afternoon highs will be in
the 80s, with dewpoints way up in the 60s. The best chance of the
scattered storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but
a few nighttime and morning showers and storms are not out of the
question. Of course, along the way there will be some decent intervals
of sunshine. We are slowly making the transition into a summer pattern
here in Alabama.

BUSY WEATHER YEAR: Preliminary Storm Prediction Center stats show that
through Monday, there have been over 70 tornadoes in Alabama, which
leads the nation in 2009. This total through early May is about 3/4
of the total number of tornadoes for ALL of 2008.

DID YOU KNOW? The number of confirmed EF0-1 tornadoes in AL have
increased significantly and steadily since 1998 and represent
approximately 85% of all tornadoes in the Birmingham NWS county
warning area. Only about 15% of tornadoes are EF2 or greater. Reasons
for this increase are likely due to technological advances (two way
communication with officials and public), pinpointing severe weather
locations, and increased verification methods. (thanks to Jim
Stefkovich of the B'ham NWS for this info)

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Very large tornado kills 3 and does $250 million
in damage in Omaha NE, making it the most costly US tornado to that
time. 133 were injured. The path of the storm was 10 miles long and up
to 1/4 of a mile wide. The tornado moved through the western section
of town before lifting over the northern part of the city, but not
before it had destroyed 287 houses and damaged 1400 others. Excellent
warnings kept the death toll amazingly low.

...A Blanket of Humid Air...

A STORMY WEDNESDAY: Across the Alabama countryside it feels more like
midsummer today as far as humidity is concerned. The dew point is well
up into the 60s and only a week or so ago they were mostly in the 40s
and 50s. Translation: this leads to a better chance of showers and
thunderstorms each day and that is the Alabama story. We have some
mention of showers and thunderstorms each day well into next week. We
believe that the most significant showers and thunderstorms will be
tomorrow and tomorrow night, but on other days they will be scattered.
High temperatures will be mostly in the 80s except tomorrow, with a
thicker cloud cover and more numerous showers and storms, the old
thermometer will really struggle to reach 80.

THE STORMS OF WEDNESDAY: South Alabama was placed under a Slight Risk
of severe weather this afternoon and this evening from about
Montgomery southward. Just about any part of the state will be subject
to some scattered storms tonight, especially after midnight. Showers
and storms will be widespread at times Wednesday and virtually the
entire state of Alabama is under a Slight Risk. Here in Central
Alabama we have a good chance of getting over 2 inches of rain in the
next two days. Tomorrow will be a day when you will want to keep in
close touch with fresh weather information.

SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: South Alabama, from roughly Montgomery
southward, is under a Slight Risk by the Storm Prediction Center
tonight, especially late tonight. That Slight Risk extends all the
way from Eastern North Carolina to North Texas. They have posted a
moderate risk for North Texas and extreme South Oklahoma. This
includes Wichita Falls and the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. For tomorrow, a
Slight Risk extends from NE Texas eastward to the Western Carolinas
and West Virginia. That includes almost all of Alabama. There is an
outside chance that part of Alabama could be upgraded to a Moderate
Risk tomorrow, but that is not sealed in stone.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Some nice amounts across Alabama the last several
days. Last year Anniston got short-changed, but Sunday afternoon and
Monday they received 2.52 inches of rain, so now they are over ½ inch
ahead of the game. The surplus at Birmingham Airport so far is 1.48
inches.

MISCELLANEOUS: A few cities that got more than 1 inch of rain in the
last 24 hours includes Mobile, Richmond, Portland, Oregon and
Anniston, Alabama. Laredo was the hottest in the country yesterday
with 101. Cold spots this morning included 27 at Custer, South Dakota
and 10 at good old Deadhorse, Alaska. Up in the north tip of Canada at
the northernmost weather station in North America, it was 3 degrees at
Alert. Our daily check, just for fun, on the snow depth in Whittier,
Alaska is 44 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I believe we have a new CC (Community
Cat) on our street. While Little Miss Molly had paused to do her most
important bathroom duty this morning, that cat walked onto the walking
track about 50 yards ahead. Away went Molly. That made me have to
scoop in three places. It was a huge cat that looked more like a
cougar at that distance. I would sure love to see Molly chase it. I
have an idea the cat would be the chaser and Molly the scrambler. Life
goes on.

...Warm and Humid Weather...

TROPICAL AIR: A blanket of moisture-laden air continues over Alabama
this morning, and with a stalled front nearby, you can't rule out a
few showers and thunderstorms again today. However, we figure they
will be rather scattered, and there will be some decent intervals of
sunshine during the day with a high in the low 80s. The best chance of
a shower or storm will come this afternoon, although we can't rule out
a morning shower in spots in this kind of airmass.

MORE SEVERE STORMS? The Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight
risk (their standard risk) of severe weather across the northern half
of Alabama tomorrow; an inpulse moving out of the Southern Plains is
forecast to bring another round of strong to severe storms during the
day, especially tomorrow afternoon. Much like the storms this past
weekend, they could pack a punch with the potential for damaging wind,
some hail, and even a few isolated tornadoes. The storms will diminish
by tomorrow night. Then, for Thursday and Friday, we will forecast a
mix of sun and clouds both days with a continued risk of scattered
showers and storms. Conditions will stay warm and muggy with highs in
the low to mid 80s.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this time it looks like an upper air ridge will
begin to nose into Alabama from the southwest over the weekend; this
should mean a trend toward fewer showers and storms, increasing
amounts of sunshine, and warmer daytime temperatures. But, with such a
moist airmass in place, we can't rule out a few scattered storms,
especially on Saturday.

SURVEY RESULTS: Survey teams from the National Weather Service in
Birmingham were able to identify six tornado tracks across our state
from Sunday… EF1 tornado damage was found near Wolf Creek, which is
west of Pell City in St. Clair County, near Dunavant, which is in
Shelby County south of Leeds and east of Mount Laurel/Shoal Creek, in
the community of Sunshine, in Hale County south of Greensboro, near
Moody and Bald Rock in St. Clair County. An EF0 tornado was identified
in the Brook Highland development, just off U.S. 280, and over to the
Greystone Legacy Golf Course. Thousands of trees were blown down due
to straight line winds across parts of Hale, Marengo, Choctaw, Perry,
Hale, and Chilton counties.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that

...Getting Some Rest...

TYPICAL MAY WEATHER: What a weekend! We were overloaded with
thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. This means that weather people
worked long, long fast-moving hours with little hope of getting much
rest. I do not mind, because I have been doing that for many years.
There were numerous severe thunderstorm warnings Saturday and Sunday
as well as a number of tornado warnings.

One of the most interesting things Sunday was a derecho. Sunday
morning, it was out in Texas, it raced eastward all day Sunday,
eventually winding up in West Georgia late Sunday afternoon. Derecho
is a Spanish word meaning straight ahead. It is a long-lived windstorm
associated with a line of severe thunderstorms. It usually does not
have the rotary winds of a tornado. In extreme cases, wind gusts in a
derecho can reach 150 mph. The one Sunday was unusually long. When
they bulge out in the middle with the center point of the line trying
to race ahead that is when the danger becomes extreme.

About 10 years ago I was on the air on about 7 Birmingham radio
stations doing a continuous warning as one of those raced eastward
from Mississippi and the bulging out part was headed straight for
Birmingham. I constantly warned everyone to get off the highway and
take shelter. It roared through the city at midafternoon uprooting
hundreds and hundreds of trees and producing wind gusts of 99 mph at
Legion Field. The worst part of the one Sunday went across the central
part of the state. I am a big numbers guy and I would take a wild
guess that at least 10 to 20 thousand trees were blown down between
East Texas and West Georgia yesterday. In just one Alabama county,
officials in Perry County reported thousands of trees down.

There were a few isolated tornadoes on Sunday. NWS teams are doing
surveys today and as their reports become available, we will post them
on our BLOG.

Today the weather is not as active, although there was a Tornado Watch
for the extreme south until early afternoon. Some lingering showers
persisted over East Alabama most of the morning. Anniston Airport got
over 1.50 inches of rain in the last 30 hours.
We will stay in a warm moist air mass. Check our day-by-day forecast
for the details. There will be some risk of a shower or thunderstorm
every day with the most numerous storms about Wednesday. Temperatures
will stay in the lower 80s in daytime.

MISCELLANEOUS: Alaska had a very cool summer last year. In Anchorage,
the temperature did not reach 70 for the first time until July 2.
Yesterday they reached 70 for the first time—exactly two months
earlier. Does that mean they are going to have a warm summer? Coldest
in Alaska this morning was 6 at Barter Island. The snow cover at
Whittier, which was over 100 inches a month ago, is down to 45 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My dear friend, Little Miss Molly, is
matching wits with me and she is winning. She has now taken over my
favorite chair. Normally when she comes over and puts her paws on my
knee, she is expecting a bathroom break. Now it means get up and let
me have your chair. That has happened three times already today. With
all the storms, I have not played a single ballgame with her in three
days. Yesterday when the first peal of thunder echoed around the
community, she was in my chair and took off like an ambulance for her
hideout upstairs, which is under a desk. Life goes on.

...What A Day!...

It started out in eastern Texas early this morning. A huge complex of
thunderstorms shaped like a giant archer's bow. It raced into western
Louisiana, roaring across that state at 70 mph. It blew across the
Mississippi River about 10 a.m. It took less than three hours for it
to cross the Magnolia State and it was knocking on the door of West
Alabama shortly after noon. Reports from Mississippi were
impressive. Thousands of trees down all along the track. It remained
very organized as it curved up into Central Alabama. Winds of 60-70
downed trees and produced damage across a wide area. Even as we were
tracking it, thunderstorms began to erupt along a surface boundary
southwest of Birmingham. These supercells produced several reports of
tornadoes from south of Birmingham to Pell City and into Calhoun County.

MONDAY FORECAST: The persistent frontal system that has been to the
north of the area for the past couple of days will eventually slide
southward today. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible
until the boundary passes through early this afternoon. There could
be some clearing during the afternoon. Highs should rise into the
middle 70s. Skies will clear overnight, briefly. Low clouds and fog
will fill back in by morning thanks to a dewpoint that will fall
slower than the mercury until they meet around 59 degrees

REST OF THE WEEK: I must admit that I don't have a lot of faith in
the particulars of this forecast. The uncertainty comes from just not
having a lot of confidence in the particular handling of the pattern
features. Tuesday looks like it will be the pick of the litter
through Friday as an upper trough sets up over the Ohio and Tennessee
Valleys. This could keep us unsettled in the Wednesday through Friday
time frame. Temperatures will remain on the warm side, running just a
tad above average for the period.

THE WEEKEND: The GFS has been consistently putting forward the idea
of a tropical storm forming in the western Caribbean in about ten
days. You have to take that with a grain of salt, since the model
tends to do this just about every year. But it has been weeks. It
will be interesting to watch. May tropical storms are rather rare,
occurring in about one out of every ten Atlantic hurricane seasons.
The first storm this year will be Ana, followed by Bill, Claudette,
Danny and Erika

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Neil Ward was a research scientist at the
National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, OK. He began hunting
dust devils while vacationing as a youngster in the west. He became a
member of the founding fraternity of storm chasers in the 1960s,
targeting thunderstorms with the goal of spotting tornadoes along with
David Hoadley and Roger Jensen. Ward theorized that he could use
radar to pick out a potentially tornadic storm and "chase" it. On
this date, Ward intercepted a tornado near Geary, OK utilizing
direction by radio from a radar operator in Oklahoma City, making him
the first storm chaser.

...Big Damaging Wind Event Looming...

A derecho is a widespread damaging wind event caused by a bow echo or thunderstorm complex.  These organized storm system can bring 60 mph+ winds to a path that is hundreds of miles long.  One of those was racing across Mississippi late this morning.  It will reach west Alabama just after the noon hour and race across Central Alabama this afternoon.  It was moving at an incredible 70 mph!  Now is the plan to plan what you will do as the line approaches.

PERSONAL SAFETY PLAN:   Do you know what to do when tornadoes and severe thunderstorms threaten?  It is especially important if you live in manufactured housing.  These homes provide affordable and excellent housing to lots of folks.  But even properly anchored, they are not safe in intense winds and tornadoes.  Plan to leave them in plenty of time before severe storms approach your area.  Go to friend or family member's frame home, preferably with a basement.

In a public building, go to the designated shelter area.  Know it in advance.  At home, go to the center, lowest floor (again, preferably a below ground basement) in a small room or closet or bathroom with as many walls between you and the outside.  Get in a tub or under something sturdy.  Protect yourself with blankets.  Kids can wear their bicycle helmets.

Don't be in a car during a tornado or strong wind evevt.  Leave them for substantial buildings.  There is an on-going debate about whether to
leave them for a ditch or to stay inside with your seat belts fastened.  Don't get caught in that situation.
Remember the threat from lightning and flooding also.  The best weapon is information.  Be in a position to receive weather watches and warnings. Stay safe today.

THE STORMS OF SPRING – DAY THREE:   We will deal with the big derecho from noon through at least mid-afternoon.   Storms ahead of it could produce damaging winds and hail, especially as we see some heating this morning.  Moderate to heavy rain over Northwest Alabama and the Tennessee Valley falling on already soaked ground could produce flooding.  More storms will form late this afternoon and evening ahead of a
cold front.

THE WEEK AHEAD:   The rain and storms should move eastward early Monday, allowing for some late clearing.  Tuesday should be a fine day, but showers and storms could return on Wednesday, and they could be a semi-permanent feature into the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008:   Cyclone Nargis left around 150,000 people dead as it rampaged across the Irrawaddy Delta of Burma.   Burma is officially known as Myanmar.  The category three tropical cyclone was packing top winds of 120 mph when it made landfall.  It then crossed southern Burma and hit the City of Rangoon hard.  The military junta in charge of the country refused outside aid at first. It is the deadliest cyclone to strike Southeast Asia in the past century and t he worst disaster in the history of the country of Burma.
