...Showers To Diminish...

This amazing weather machine that we call our atmosphere has an
uncanny way of humbling me when I make my weather forecast.
Yesterday, all indications were t hat the shower activity would stay
west of I-65. Drier air flowing in from the east seemed to put the
kibosh on showers as they entered the middle part of the state. The
models said that showers would stay on the western side of the state.
So I called for only sprinkles east of I-65, walked out, and turned on
my lawn sprinklers. Sure enough, it was raining within an hour. Now,
it was barely enough to wet the ground, but it was rain. Nothing can
humble you like Mother Nature.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The upper level trough that has been producing
showers over eastern Mississippi and western Alabama will lift out and
weaken today. A few showers will be possible this morning, but by
this afternoon, they should be on the wane. Skies should be partly
sunny with a light easterly breeze and temperatures topping out just
above 80 degrees in most locations. Skies should be fair overnight,
with lows dropping to around 60F.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure over the eastern U.S. will make the
trough a memory as we head into the new work week. Fall officially
begins on Monday, and we will have some fairly seasonal temperatures
in the week ahead. Highs will be in the lower 80s. Lows will be in
the upper 50s and lower 60s. Things should be dry through much of
the week.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: Next weekend should feature more fine weather,
with lots of sunshine, seasonably warm days and comfortable nights.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Good news in the drought department here in Alabama.
17.8 percent of the state of Alabama is considered to be in drought
conditions. This is down from 56.2 percent three months ago. Still,
nearly 60 percent of the state is considered to be abnormally dry.
Drought conditions are limited to the Tennessee Valley and Northeast
Alabama. Extreme to exceptional drought conditions continue over
Northeast Georgia, upstate South Carolina and the mountains of North
Carolina.

IN THE TROPICS: A couple of areas of interest in the tropical
Atlantic. First, a tropical wave over the Central Caribbean has
showed signs of getting better organized since yesterday. A tropical
depression could form in the next day or so as the system encounters
less in the way of wind shear. It likely would move northwestward
toward the Bahamas. If that doesn't happen, there are still signs
that some type of system could form off the southeast coast of the
U.S. at some point this week. Finally, there are also signs that a
tropical cyclone will form over the eastern Atlantic this week.
Something here would likely recurve over the open ocean.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Rita strengthened explosively over
the Gulf of Mexico into a Category Five hurricane and became the third
strongest on record with a central pressure of 897 millibars. With
the memories of the Katrina disaster still fresh on the minds of Gulf
Coast residents, highways were jammed with evacuees leaving coastal
sections of Texas and Louisiana.

...Dry East; Showers West...

One batch of showers moved across Northwest Alabama and into the
Tennessee Valley overnight. Much of the precipitation evaporated
before reaching the ground, but as the atmosphere moistened up, mostly
light rain was reported. Another batch was moving across West Alabama
late this morning. Again, rainfall amounts will be light. Drier air
over East Alabama will limit the possibilities for rain to mainly
sprinkles. Skies will be mostly cloudy through tomorrow with better
chances for sun over eastern sections. Expect this situation to
continue through part of Sunday, until drier air begins to take
control of all of Alabama's weather later tomorrow.

FALL BEGINS MONDAY: Fall officially arrives on Monday at 10:44 a.m.
CDT. And the week ahead should be fairly seasonal. Increasing
amounts of sunshine will be featured in the coming week, with daily
highs in the lower 80s and overnight lows in the lower 60s for the
most part. The same easterly flow pattern looks to be in place into
next weekend, meaning more of the same
in the weather department.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Bama is in Fayetteville to take on Arkansas for a
late morning kickoff. Just a slight chance of a shower or storm.
Gametime temperatures will be in the upper 70s. The Old Gray Lady
will be host to Alabama State and UAB at 3 p.m. Mostly dry conditions
expected. Maybe a sprinkle or shower. Temperatures starting out in
the upper 70s and falling slowly during the game. Auburn and LSU will
be played under dry conditions. Just a small risk of a shower this
evening on the Plains. Temperatures will fall back into the 60s during
the contest.

RECORD BIN: The 85F high at Kalispell, MT Friday was a record for
the date. The 94F at Boise, ID tied a record for the date. 36F is a
threshold temperature for light frost. Yesterday, Fairbanks, AK
reached 36F for the first time this season. It is the latest that has
ever occurred at the station. Light frost was reported on the
hillsides around the city.

SEVERE WEATHER THIS WEEK: Another sign of the changing seasons:
severe weather is possible over the northern and central Plains on
Sunday and Monday as a shortwave trough moves across the area.
Supercell storms will be possible.

TROPICS: We expect approaching weather systems to spread bad weather
ahead of them. Not the case with tropical waves. They are preceded
by generally fine weather, with shower activity on the backside of
them. That's the case this morning over the eastern Caribbean, where
a wave is moving to the west. Showers are over the Lesser Antilles.
This system is encountering unfavourable upper level winds, but that
situation should change over the Caribbean this week. Tropical
cyclone development is possible. The models hint at the development
of some type of hybrid low off the coast of the Southeast U.S. in the
week ahead, but no real handle on this possibility yet. The GFS and
other global models predict that a tropical cyclone may develop over
the eastern Atlantic this week. It should curve out to sea, well east
of the islands.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Devastating hurricane struck the Louisiana
coast, coming ashore 50 miles west of New Orleans, near Houma around
8pm. The hurricane was as intense as the Galveston Hurricane of 1900
with a central pressure of 931 mb. 350 people were killed as a large
section of the Louisiana coast was inundated. Storm surge reached 15
feet in the Timbalier Bay area.

...Comfortable Weather Continues...

An upper level trough is to the west of Alabama
this morning. Meanwhile, drier air is wedging in from the east thanks
to high pressure over New England. Here in Central Alabama, we are
caught in the middle.

OUR FORECAST: Most areas getting off to a bit of a
gray start on this Saturday thanks to low level moisture. The sun
will break through the clouds toward lunchtime. There will be a few
light sprinkles or showers across the area today, but it will be hard
to scare up measurable rainfall amounts. Highs this afternoon will be
right around 80 degrees. The small rain chances will be with us
through the overnight hours, and clouds will thicken toward morning.
Look for lows around 60F. By Sunday, the trough will begin to weaken
and the easterly flow will drop our moisture levels even further. The
rain chances will go to nil. Expect a tad more in the way of sunshine
on Sunday and highs right around 80 again. High pressure will take
firm control of the weather over the eastern U.S. as we head into a
new work week. That means dry conditions and seasonable temperatures
through the coming week. Highs will be in the lower 80s and lows will
be in the lower 60s.

RECORDS: 27F at Caribou, Maine and 31F at Watertown, New
York Friday morning were both signs of the changing season and records
for the date.

IN THE TROPICS: An easterly wave is working into the
Central Caribbean. It is accompanied by a broad area of low
pressure. Upper level conditions are beginning to become more
favorable and there is a chance that a tropical depression will form
over the Caribbean during the next couple of days as the wave moves
westward. We could see a subtropical storm form off the coast of the
Carolinas early next week. This could be a significant producer of
beach erosion, coastal flooding and gale force winds into New
England. Finally, the models are hinting at the development of a
tropical cyclone over the far eastern Atlantic this week. It would be
hard for it to make it all the way across the ocean without being
hailed by some passing trough. That's good news. We are still
waiting on Josephine, the next arrow in the quiver of the Atlantic
Hurricane season.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama is in Fayetteville to play
Arkansas this morning with an 11:30 kick off. An isolated shower or
thunderstorm is possible, which means a very small chance, and the
high temperature during the game should be near 78. Alabama State
plays UAB in Birmingham at 3:00 p.m. It should be near 78 at kick off
and about 70 at the final whistle with dry conditions. Finally, at
6:45 p.m., the LSU Tigers will be in Auburn for a key game. About 75
at kick off and 65 in the fourth quarter with only a small risk of a
shower.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Rita intensified
rapidly as it passed through the Florida Straits about 50 miles south
of Key West. A storm surge of up to five feet affected the Keys,
overwashing US-1 in some locations. It was the beginning of an
astounding intensification that saw the storm deepen from a Category
Two to a Category Five storm in twenty four hours. The central
pressure in the storm would drop from 965 millibars to 897 millibars
in twenty four hours.

...More Comfortable Temperatures...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of some uncertainty, at least in the
near term. Showers have been persistent over parts of Mississippi
today and a few light ones spread into West Alabama. This was due to
and upper-level disturbance and we are not sure how far eastward it
will affect the weather. There were some moderate showers over East
Mississippi, but most of the West Alabama showers have been rather
light.

So, we will go with a chance of some showers over West Alabama this
evening—most of them west of the Birmingham area. We also foresee a
small risk of showers on Sunday, otherwise most of the rest of the
weather through next Tuesday should be dry.
Temperatures are just outright pleasant. Not much that we could
improve on with those. Night lows will be mainly between 58 and 63 and
daytime highs 80 to 83. We cannot beat that.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Some big games on Saturday, but first we will
discuss football weather tonight. There will be a small risk of a
shower over the west part of the state, otherwise, dry with pleasant
temperatures. At most stadiums the temperature should be in the mid
70s for the 7:30 kick off and dropping into the 60s during the second
half. Alabama is in Fayetteville to play Arkansas Saturday with an
11:30 kick off. An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible, which
means a very small chance, and the high temperature during the game
should be near 78. Alabama State plays UAB in Birmingham at 3:00 p.m.
It should be near 78 at kick off and about 70 at the final whistle
with dry conditions. Jacksonville State will be in Chattanooga for a
6:00 p.m. kick off. Dry, pleasant weather with 75 at kick off and
about 64 at the final whistle. Finally, at 6:45 p.m., the LSU Tigers
will be in Auburn for a key game. About 75 at kick off and 65 in the
fourth quarter with only a small risk of a shower.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We need to watch the Tropics again. A tropical
wave, part of a broad low-pressure area, was producing widespread
showers over the Lesser Antilles and adjacent Caribbean and Atlantic
waters. Sorry to say that it has become a little better organized
today. Upper-level winds are expected to become more friendly for it
to show additional development over the next couple of days. If it
finally develops into a tropical storm, it will be named Kyle. It will
continue moving westward into the Eastern Caribbean.

WRAPUP: Low temperatures this morning included 24 at Saranac Lake,
New York—the coldest in the USA—and high yesterday 108 in Death
Valley. Both of those locations frequently have the temperature
extremes. Coldest in Alaska was 25 at Chandalar Lake.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, Little Miss
Molly, is growing smarter by the day. She has learned strategic
deployment of her toys for maximum efficiency to booby-trap me when I
walk to the kitchen to get coffee. When I got up this morning, I
counted three of her favorite balls in the master bedroom, one in the
office, two in the foyer, one in the kitchen and four in the large
living area. When she hears me coming, she can grab one and come
charging at me to deposit the ball at my feet. It is so hard to turn
her down. I got a kick out of a "Dear God Letter from Dogs" that Esker
Harrison forwarded. One of my favorites, "When we all get to heaven,
can we sit on your couch or will it be the same old story?" I say
again that dogs are a lot smarter than we think. I know that Molly is
a lot smarter than I am. I do not mind. Life goes on.

A DRY PATTERN FOR MOST OF ALABAMA: We really don't expect much change
in the weather through early next week, meaning little chance of
significant rain, and temperatures a little below average for mid to
late September in Alabama. A general easterly flow means there will be
a few cloudy periods along the way, and the cooler temperatures will
be over the eastern third of the state in the wedge. The deeper
moisture will be confined to South Alabama, where a few showers will
be possible over the weekend. A shower is not totally out of the
question across Central Alabama by Sunday and Monday, but most places
should stay dry.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama is in Fayetteville for an 11:30 kick off
tomorrow with the Arkansas Razorbacks. About a 1 in 3 chance of a
shower or thunderstorm during the game and high temperature around 75.
LSU will be in Auburn Saturday night for a 6:45 kick off. It should be
a mostly dry game with kick off temperature of 77 and dropping to the
upper 60s. Alabama State will be at Legion Field to play UAB at 3:00
p.m. Expect dry weather with 80 at kick off and lowering to 75.
Jacksonville State will be in Chattanooga for a 6:00 p.m. game. Fair
and dry. 75 at kick off and 60s in the fourth quarter. For high school
games tonight and Friday night, it should be dry with pleasant
temperatures 70 and 75.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A large tropical wave is producing showers across a
pretty good chunk of the Lesser Antilles, but upper air winds are not
favorable for development, and tropical storm formation is not
expected through the weekend.

RAIN UPDATE: While the month of September has been dry, Birmingham
still has a rain surplus for the year. The total so this month is only
0.39". For the year, the total is 44.25", giving us a surplus of
4.18". We can thank Tropical Storm Fay for pushing us up last month.
Elsewhere, Anniston is 0.78" below average for 2008, while Tuscaloosa
is much drier, with a deficiency of 8.87".

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: Air Force reconnaissance measures a central
pressure of 923 mb in Hurricane Beulah over the Gulf of Mexico as the
storm threatened the Texas coast. These readings were the second
lowest aircraft measurements recorded up until that time. Fortunately,
Beulah weakened somewhat before she made landfall landfall between
Brownsville and the mouth of the Rio Grande on the morning of the
20th. Padre Island was cut completely through in 31 different places.
The storm surge generated by the hurricane was 18 feet. A record
number of 47 tornadoes accompanies the hurricane in Texas. The death
toll in the storm was 15.

ALMOST TIME: Fall colors will begin showing in the mountains of North
Alabama in early October and then sweep across the region. Colors will
be at their peak from late October to early November. As the greens of
summer surrender to glittering yellow poplars, scarlet dogwoods,
orange maples and golden hickories, Alabama unfolds its patchwork
quilt of color about 7 weeks from now.

...A Few Showers By Sunday...

ANOTHER WEEK OF PLEASANT TEMPERATURES: We do not see any return to
miserable temperatures at all for the next five to seven days at
least. The old thermometer will hang around most afternoons in the 80
to 83 range. It is possible that over the weekend some of the high
temperatures will be in the upper 70s, especially over East Alabama.
Part of that is due to some cool air coming down the east side of the
Appalachians and then spreading westward into Alabama.

The touch part of our forecast is yes or no on showers. It appears
that the south half of the state will have a chance of showers by
Sunday and Monday. We could see a few here in Central Alabama, also.

It was pleasantly cool again this morning with some upper 50s in the
north and 60s over most of the rest of the state. For the next several
days, lows should mostly between 58 and 63.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama is in Fayetteville for an 11:30 kick off
Saturday with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a tropical wave over the Lesser Antilles
producing a large area of showers and some locally heavy rain. It is
not likely to develop into a tropical depression, at least for the
next couple of days. In the heavily damaged Ike country, recovery
continues. A few thunderstorms may show up during the weekend, but
high temperatures will be tolerable, mostly in the lower 80s. All of
Galveston is still without power, so they do not need any 90-plus heat
and high humidity.

GLOBAL ROAMING: There was 2.75 inches of rain in Lincoln, Nebraska in
the last 24 hours. A Freeze Warning is posted for Upstate New York
tonight. They expect widespread frost and lows
in the 20s. That will surely accelerate autumn color and will entice
the Canada geese to start southward. It was 27 this morning at
Spincich Lake, Michigan and also in good old Deadhorse, Alaska for the
coldest in the USA. Girwood, Alaska has had measurable rain 18 days in
a row. Portage, Alaska has had 26 inches of rain so far this month.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Still getting a number of e-mails about
rescue dogs. Next week I will mention several of those. The more I
hear from readers, if you want a dog and one that will be a real
companion, you cannot go wrong with a rescue dog. They seem to
appreciate the kindness after being abused or abandoned. That does not
mean other dogs are not exceptionally nice also. I could not ask for a
better companion than my Little Miss Molly. My only regret with that
little girl is having very little playtime with her lately due to
active weather. She also is not getting enough sleep because of so
many people living here. She tries to steal away and take long daytime
naps. Wish I could join her. Life goes on.

...Comfortable Weather Continues...

CALM DAYS: Looks like an extended period of quiet weather for Alabama.
At this time we see no major chance of rain through the middle part of
next week, although the ole wedge will bring some clouds to East
Alabama at times. The wedge was in play yesterday; cold air drained
down the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains, and moved into
the eastern counties of the state with low clouds and cool
temperatures. At one point yesterday, our SKYCAM atop Mount Cheaha
(south of Anniston) was showing 65 degrees with clouds all around
(they were literally in the clouds), while Tuscaloosa was at 80 with a
mostly sunny sky.

We expect highs mostly in the 80 to 83 degree range through early next
week, with early morning lows down in the low 60s. The main chance of
rain across the Southeast U.S. in coming days will be along the
Atlantic coast, from Charleston down through Savannah, Brunswick, and
Jacksonville. The Florida peninsula will also have occasional showers.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: For fans traveling to Fayetteville, Arkansas for
Saturday's Alabama/Arkansas game (11:30 a.m. kickoff), the sky will be
mostly cloudy, and there is a one in three
chance of a shower or storm during the game. The kickoff temperature
will be close to 75, rising into the upper 70s during the game. Auburn
will host LSU Saturday evening at 6:45; the sky will be mostly fair
with a kickoff temperature of 77, dropping to near 70 by the end of
the game. And, for the high school games across Alabama tonight and
tomorrow night, the sky will be mostly fair with temperatures in the
low to mid 70s.

TROPICS: We can be thankful for a very quiet Atlantic basin now, as
folks from Texas to Ohio are still recovering from Hurricane Ike, and
our friends in Louisiana, in some cases, are just getting power
restored after Hurricane Gustav. But, don't forget the hurricane
season runs through the end of November, and we figure there will be
one more burst of activity, most likely toward the end of this month
and the first two weeks of October. Big hurricanes are relatively rare
this far north in November due to cooler ocean water temperatures.

HODGEPODGE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 110 degrees. Coldest spots were Arctic Village, Alaska and
Wisdom, Montana with 23 degrees. The high yesterday afternoon in
Barrow, Alaska was only 38 degrees as their long, dark, and cold
Arctic winter approaches.

ON THIS DATE IN 1752: The hurricane of 1752 was one of the most
devastating in Charleston's history. Although the number of lives lost
cannot be determined, a contemporary Boston press
report, based on a ship's officer's account, estimated that ninety-
five people were drowned. The maelstrom, which also struck surrounding
areas, had many long-term effects. The destruction of trees was
severe, one plantation owner's loss was assessed at $50,000.

...Inactive Weather Continues...

COOL NIGHTS; PLEASANT DAYS: It is truly amazing how the weather can
change so much in just a few days. Early this afternoon, I did a radar
scan of all 48 states and, at the most, I would only 1% of the USA was
getting rain. Compare that to last weekend when Ike was moving
northward into the center of the country and an old tropical
depression from the Pacific was joining up with him. All of that
created widespread flash floods through much of the Central USA, the
Midwest and even the Great Lakes.

Back home in Alabama, it was another delightfully cool morning. The
temperature dropped as low as 50 in Grantley, in NE Alabama, the
coolest weather since last April. We have a long list of morning low
temperatures on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but here are a few samples:

52 Russellville Airport
53 Moulton, Decatur, Muscle Shoals, SW Lamar County
54 Hanceville, Crossville
55 Cottondale, Hamilton, Hazel Green

50s were common over the north half of the state and even Gulf Shores
enjoyed a pleasant 63. It will be nearly that cool tonight and highs
tomorrow will only be in the low to mid 80s.

THE PESKY WEDGE: When the old wedge gets involved in our weather, I
want to run for the hills because it can destroy a forecast. For
example, this afternoon the temperature was only 62 atop Mt. Cheaha in
East Alabama with winds up to 20 mph. Visibility was almost nothing,
because Alabama's highest mountain was in the base of the clouds. It
was also only in the 60s over NE Georgia this afternoon. We are
leaving rain out of the forecast all the way through Sunday. There is
some hint we could have a few showers late in the weekend.

ALL ABOUT THE TROPICS: A drastic situation is unfolding in Galveston.
Today the mayor issued a warning of a major health crisis. There were
thousands that refused to evacuate and they are faced with no power,
no water and now even a failing sewage system. The only bright light
is weather that is not too hot and the humidity relatively low. In
fact, the dew point in Houston was only 55 today, which is very low
humidity. Dry weather should continue in Galveston and Houston until a
few thunderstorms late Friday. A tiger is loose is Galveston and
alligators were reported swimming in the flooded sections.

Elsewhere on the Tropical front, absolutely no threat of any
development in the entire Atlantic Basin, which includes the Gulf. We
have had 10 named storms so far this year, which is about where we
were last year at this time. The next storm this year is Kyle.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Anchorage had a high yesterday of only 49 and 1.22
inches of rain as their exceptional cool summer continues. USA
extremes in the last 24 hours: 103 at Indio, California and 26 this
morning at Stanley, Idaho. The weather is so quiet that the last
warning in the USA was last night from Las Vegas when flash flooding
threatened San Bernardino County in SE California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Got a nice e-mail from a lady named
Wanda who highly recommends obtaining a rescue dog. She has one and it
has turned out to be one of the best dogs she could imagine. She found
the female dog on a highway a few weeks ago with an injured leg, mange
and scared to death. She took the dog to her vet and got everything
cleared up and now she is looking for a home. She already has a house
full of dogs otherwise she would keep Angel, the name of the rescue
dog. I have often heard that abused dogs make some of the very best
compassionate pets when they are rescued and treated right.

...Pleasant, Calm September Weather...

A QUIET DAY IN THE WEATHER OFFICE: Four years ago today, we were
cleaning up after the passage of Hurricane Ivan, which produced
flooding along with widespread tree and power line damage across our
state. Today, we are expecting a case of severe clear for our state,
with low humidity and comfortable temperatures. Following a crisp
morning low in the mid to upper 50s, we will rise into the low 80s
today with a good supply of sunshine. Look for similar weather
tomorrow and Friday with only a few scattered clouds around from time
to time. Dry air in the low levels of the atmosphere means no
significant chance of rain.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? We are forecasting a mixture of clouds and
sunshine Saturday and Sunday with afternoon highs around the 80 degree
mark. A low level easterly flow will bring some Atlantic moisture into
the state, but there isn't much of a trigger for rain, and for now we
won't mention any wet weather in our formal forecast for the weekend.
The benign weather should continue into the first few days of next week.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SUMMER: No triple digit heat for Birmingham; our
hottest day was July 21 when the high was 99. The average high for the
month of August was 88.7 degrees, which is below the average value for
the month. Much of the nation had below average temperatures this
summer; in Milwaukee the daily high never reached 90 degrees all
season; that has only
happened twice before; in 2000 and 1915.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: The "Hurricane Bowl". The college football game
that didn't happen. University of Alabama football coach Bill Curry
made the decision not to fly his team to College Station, Texas to
play Texas A&M as Hurricane Gilbert moved across the Gulf of Mexico.
The storm later moved into Mexico. At what would have been game time,
viewers on ESPN watched as the announcers sat in an empty stadium
awash in sunshine and hot temperatures. The game would eventually be
played in December, and Alabama would win.

IKE AFTERMATH: From the Houston Chronicle… Military helicopters are
being used to rescue people from Hurricane Ike-ravaged Bolivar
Peninsula. Two Blackhawk helicopters yesterday afternoon airlifted 18
people from the area east of Galveston, where Ike made landfall early
Saturday. Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough said today that the
holdouts on Bolivar Peninsula will be required to leave in the next
few days. Officials are prepared to impose martial law if needed to
empty the barrier island scraped clean by Ike. In Galveston, Residents
who refused to flee Hurricane Ike have lived without power and other
essentials, including air conditioning, running water and gasoline,
since the storm roared ashore here early Saturday. Living conditions
have been primitive. People can't flush toilets or cook hot meals.
They sweat without air conditioning.

...Several Days of Pleasant Weather...

WEATHER MORE USER FRIENDLY: I think every person in the state of
Alabama was pleased, when they dashed out to get the morning paper, at
how genuinely good the weather felt. It is getting the time of year
when these little cool air intrusions will come more often and be more
pronounced.

This one is especially timely, because we all need a break from
fighting hurricanes and tropical storms.

Early this morning temperatures dropped as low as the 50s over parts
of North Alabama. Here are some of the most enjoyable ones:

53 Albertville
55 Meridianville
56 Hamilton
57 Scrougout, Remlap, Muscle Shoals
58 Crossville, Springville/Simmons Mountain
59 Pinson, Decatur, Cottondale, Centreville, Vigo, McCalla

Most other lows were in the low to mid 60s, even near the coast. It
was 64 in Mobile and Fairhope and 66 at Gulf Shores and Coden. The
warmest overnight low was 71 on Dauphin Island.
We look for lows to be in the upper 50s again tonight and low 60s the
rest of the week. High temperatures all week will be generally between
81 and 83. The humidity will stay low until a few showers arrive late
Saturday or Sunday.

HURRICANE CLEAN UP WEATHER: It is amazing how the weather has calmed
for almost the entire country. The only thunderstorms we could find
this afternoon were in the Eastern Carolinas and SE Virginia. Let's
look in on Houston and Galveston, because if there is any place that
needs a weather break, it is that part of SE Texas. Galveston is
expecting dry weather through Thursday with some scattered showers
showing up Friday and over the weekend. No threat of tropical storms
during that period and temperatures will not be oppressively hot.
Right after the hurricane, it was still hot with very high dew points—
almost unbearable for a lot of people going through the very worst
time of their life. I still fear that the death toll will rise
considerably more, especially in the Houston/Galveston area.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Some of the cold temperatures this morning included
16 at Anaktuvuk Pass Alaska. 27 at Stanley, Iowa, 29 in Yellowstone
National Park and 25 at Polebridge, Montana.

TROPICAL WEATHER: According to long-time records, we supposedly
passed the zenith of the most active part of the hurricane season
around September 10. Of course, that varies greatly from year to year.
There is absolutely nothing on the deck today, not even a tropical
wave. We have had 10 named storms this season. The next three will be
Kyle, Laura, and Marco. Glad those are easy to pronounce.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Enjoyed an email from Jean Pettus asking
what kind of dog Molly is. "I know Molly is loving," she said. She
added, "Oh, I wish I had a dog. I have not owned one in a long, long
time." Jean, I wish I could persuade you to find you a nice puppy or
dog. I cannot recommend it enough. Molly is a little 9-pound Shih-Tzu
and all 9 pounds of that little girl just radiates friendliness. If
she were running for president in November, all the other candidates
could just give up. She is just that friendly and diplomatic. I wish
you luck. Life goes on.

...Cooler Nights Ahead...

A TASTE OF FALL: Cooler and drier air will slip into Alabama today,
and will bring noticeably cooler nights through mid-week. While some
could could linger early this morning, the sky should become partly
sunny today as the dry air takes over. Humidity levels will be lower,
and the high should be somewhere in the low 80s. Then, tonight, with a
fair sky and light wind, temperatures will drop quickly, and most
communities around here will be in the upper 50s by daybreak tomorrow.
Some of the normally cooler spots could visit the low to mid 50s, very
refreshing after the long, hot Alabama summer.

At this time, we expect our weather to remain generally rain-free
through Friday with comfortable temperatures. A low level easterly
flow develops by the end of the week, which could bring in some
moisture from the east, but for now we won't mention any rain in the
formal forecast through Friday.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND: That low level easterly flow could bring a
little scattered light rain to this part of the state on Saturday, but
it doesn't look like a major threat at this point. Sunday looks dry,
and the high both days will be close to 80 degrees, which it a little
below average for mid-September in Alabama.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is rather quiet for a change. A wave east
of the Leeward Islands won't develop anytime soon due to harsh upper
air winds around the system, and tropical storm formation is not
expected through the rest of the week.

FALL ALMOST HERE: The autumnal equinox is at 10:44 CDT on Monday
September 22. That is when the sun is directly over the equator on the
journey south; we will have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12
hours of darkness on that day. The winter solstice this year falls on
December 21.

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY: At 51 minutes after midnight on 16 September
2004, the northern eyewall of powerful Hurricane Ivan moved onto land
near Gulf Shores as an upper Category 3
hurricane. The official time of landfall was 2:02 AM CDT (when the
center of Ivan's eye crossed land). Bringing with it 130 mph surface
winds and a historic storm surge, preliminary estimates show that the
magnitude and extent of the damage and destruction over Baldwin County
Alabama and Escambia and Santa Rosa counties of northwest Florida
likely exceeded that of both Hurricane Frederic (September 1979) and
Hurricane Opal (October 1995). Additionally, Hurricane Ivan may rival
the magnitude of damage and destruction caused by the Hurricane of
1926 which ravaged the aforementioned counties east of Mobile Bay.
Hurricane Ivan caused a preliminary total of 13 deaths in the
following counties combined: Baldwin County, Alabama, Escambia
County, Florida, Santa Rosa County, Florida. Damage is estimated to
be over 5 billion US Dollars.

...Weather Settling Down...

IKE IS GONE; FIRST HINT OF AUTUMN: It is time for a change in Alabama
weather. After several days of waiting on Ike to make up his mind and
then having to watch him cause major destruction for our neighbor's
west of here, it is time to bring in some more relaxing weather.

Indeed, on our weather plate we are serving the first hint of autumn.
I should not jump the gun too quickly since we have a cool front
struggling to get through the state and it was setting off some
scattered showers this afternoon, including some thunderstorms in the
extreme SE. Those should end later tonight and you will feel the lower
humidity and more pleasant temperatures starting tomorrow and lasting
for several days. We will see some low temperatures in the 50s in some
of the North Alabama valleys for the next several nights and most
daytime highs will be between 80 and 83 with the added benefit of
lower humidity. Some showers may return by late Friday and a better
chance of some scattered showers next Saturday.
We have enough material to almost write a book today. We do not have
the space here, but let's list a few rain amounts for the last 24
hours. 1.07 Alabaster/Navajo Pines, 0.91 Huntsville and 0.68 at Shelby
County Airport.

THE DRAMA OF HURRICANE IKE: We have watched hurricanes come ashore
for many years. Technology in the last 10 years allows us to watch
every step of the way as the first outer bands come on shore and
finally the eye. It was a long night Friday night watching Ike come in
over Galveston. It is an eerie feeling, because you sit helplessly and
know that people's lives are being ruined, all their property being
destroyed and maybe even losing their life. After making landfall at
Galveston after midnight, he continued north, spreading misery over a
wide area. It is interesting to note that when Ike got up in the
center part of the country, he met the remnants of Tropical Depression
Lowell that had come all the way from the Eastern Pacific. Together
they absolutely flooded many areas in the Midwest and also produced
some high winds. A few of the rain amounts from the entire drama:
15.75 inches at Houston; 5.78 Denham Springs, Louisiana; 5.09 Big
Fork, Arkansas; 8.93 Clinton, Missouri; 11.02 Udall, Kansas; 11.83
Fairview, Oklahoma; 10.40 Peotone, Illinois and 11.46 at Portage,
Indiana. All I can say is wow!

THE TROPICS NOW: We are in a quiet time. No immediate threats of new
tropical storms.

CANADA GEESE WATCH: Bonnie Jackson, one of our subscribers in Saranac
Lake, New York, says that Canada geese are gathering in the field
nearby, probably planning their fall trip. Will keep watching them.
When they do take off and head south, there is a huge flock and they
are very noisy…other hints of autumn, a low of 19 this morning at
Chandalar Lake, Alaska and 16 at Alert in extreme North Canada with
freezing drizzle.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sorry I had to omit mention of Molly
Friday. Ran completely out of space. Have tried over the weekend to
spend more time with her. She never gets enough. After living with
Molly six years and bonded together like glue, I often wonder why
humans are so hard to entertain. I have always enjoyed the more simple
things of life and Molly has trained me to be more easily entertained.
One of my greatest pleasures is playing with her and loving her. Life
goes on.

...A Little Taste of Fall Ahead...

Didn't it feel a little like an unsettled spring day yesterday? With
the warmth and humidity, combined with strong south winds, it almost
had the feel of tornado weather. The darkening and lowering clouds
racing along in the strong southerly flow added to the feel.
Fortunately, there weren't any tornadoes, hardly and storms and barely
any rainfall even though a cool front was approaching. Now, yesterday
felt like spring, and it looks like we will have a little taste of
fall for the remainder of the week.

SHOWERS: An approaching frontal system triggered showers and a
little isolated thunder on Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. The
front sort of ran out of steam much as we expected and will slowly
edge into southeastern Alabama later today. Meanwhile, scattered
showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two will be around through the
morning hours. By afternoon, we should see this activity shifted
southeastward out of the area as drier air starts to flow into the
state.

TOUCH OF FALL? The clouds and precipitation will hold temperatures
in the 70s today. Dewpoints will drop back into the upper 50s
tonight, allowing for morning lows on Tuesday to average around 60F.
Ditto for Wednesday. In fact, throw Thursday morning in there too.
Some of the normally cooler spots might see 50s. You know who you
are. Highs will be right around 80, give or take a couple of
degrees, right on through Thursday. The next chance of rain will come
for the weekend as an increasing easterly flow and approaching upper
trough combine to produce showers and storms.

RECORD REPORTS: Lots of record heat in the Northeast U.S. on Sunday.
Some of the newly established mark for September 14th include 92F at
Newark, NJ and 93F at Georgetown, DE. Cape Hatteras tied their record
for the date with a high of 87F as did LaGuardia Airport in New York
with a high of 89F. For the second day, South Bend, Indiana recorded
a rainfall record for the date. 3.94 inches fell on Sunday. This
adds to the 6.58 inches that fell on Saturday. That amount was good
enough to be an all-time record for South Bend.

TROPICS: A disturbance about 500 miles east of the Leeward Islands
continues marching to the west northwest. It is underneath some
fairly significant wind shear, so development is not expected in the
short run. Conditions are forecast to become more favorable this
week. Still, the global models aren't predicting any tropical cyclone
development this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: States of emergency were declared in Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama and Florida as powerful category four Hurricane
Ivan steamed toward the northern Gulf Coast. Ivan was the third
strong hurricane to affect the United States in a thirty three day
period since Hurricane Charley struck the coast of Southwest Florida
in August. Mandatory evacuations and curfews were in place along the
coast. Prisoners had to be moved out of the Mobile County Jail out of
fears that the facility would flood. Casinos were closed along the
Mississippi Coast. The city of New Orleans, the Mississippi Coast and
the City of Mobile were spared the worst as the hurricane shifted east
in the hours before landfall, which occurred near Orange Beach,
Alabama.

...Showers In Our Future...

While Ike did not have a true direct impact on Central Alabama, it is
affecting the weather across the state this afternoon. It is
producing breezy conditions and propelling a front our way that will
produce showers and storms through Monday morning.

CHECKING ON IKE: The remnant low formerly known as Ike was moving into
southern Illinois early this afternoon. It will continue to zip
northeast, getting absorbed by a frontal system, setting up the
potential for a heavy ran event through the Great Lakes states. Ike
produced 3 or 4 tornadoes yesterday across Arkansas. Isolated
tornadoes are possible today from western New York back down into
Tennessee.

ALABAMA WEATHER: Skies dawned mostly gray across Alabama on this
Sunday morning. Winds were brisk, out of the south and southeast
averaging 10-20 mph. A few higher gusts will occur through the day
thanks to the pressure difference between Ike to the northwest and the
subtropical high to our southwest. A cool front extended
southwestward out of tropical depression Ike. It will move into
northwestern Alabama late this afternoon. Ahead of it, a line of
showers and storms was progressing southeastward. These showers and
storms will overspread the area, slowing as the front loses momentum.
A wave of low pressure will ripple northeastward along the front,
keeping shower chances high through the morning hours on Monday. As
it zips by, the front should go ahead and clear the area by Monday
evening. Drier air will filter into Alabama behind the front, giving
us really pleasant weather for much of the week ahead.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: By Friday, high pressure will set up near the
Chesapeake Bay giving us a flow of moist air from the east. This will
combine with a trough to our west to increase rain caches for the
weekend.

TROPICS: The area of disturbed weather about 900 miles east of the
Leeward Antilles is still disorganized because of unfavorable upper
levels winds. Those winds may become more
favorable for development in the week ahead.

RECORD BIN: 6.58 inches of rain fell in South Bend, Indiana
yesterday, much of it during the second half of the Notre Came-
Michigan game. The steady rain led to four second half Michigan
turnovers and helped power the Irish to 35-17 victory. It also was an
all-time daily rainfall record for the station. The 6.63 inches of
rain that fell at Chicago's O'Hare Airport is also an all time record
rainfall for a calendar day there. Extensive flooding resulted in
Chicagoland. Closer to home, Huntsville's low temperature on
Saturday was 73F, establishing a record warm low for the date.

ON THIS DATE IN 1841: Before the summer of 1841, the port of St.
Joseph was a bustling town. But during that summer, yellow fever
ravaged West Florida and the town's population dropped from 4000 to
less than 500. A hurricane on this date destroyed much of what was
left of the town. The town ceased to exist. For years afterwards,
circuit preachers portrayed St. Joseph as a wicked place that had been
destroyed by God's wrath because of its sinfulness.

...Fall To Tease This Week...

If I told you that you could have some much needed rain, followed by
some cooler air later in the week…some lows in the lower 70s and maybe
even a high or two in the seventies…would that interest you? That's
what I thought…

IKE EXITS: Tropical Depression Ike is over southeastern Missouri this
morning. It is moving to the northeast quickly, at over 35 miles per
hour. There will be a minimal tornado threat today from southern
Illinois and western Kentucky into Ohio and Pennsylvania.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A warm and humid airmass covers Alabama this
morning. To the west, Ike is scooting out ahead of an upper level
trough dropping through the Plains states. The remnant low will drag
a cold front eastward across the Deep South today. Showers and storms
should break out and move into the area this afternoon. They will
continue moving eastward through the evening. The front will be
running up against a stubborn subtropical high over Florida and the
western Atlantic. It should slow across the area overnight, and
hopefully will hang around long enough to bring a continued chance of
rain for at least part of Monday. But it might get far enough to the
east to allow for some 60s overnight over western sections of the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday should start off cloudy and damp, with those
leftover showers continuing. The clouds and precipitation, along
with a freshening northerly wind might help to hold the mercury in the
70s in a few locations for Monday highs. Skies should clear a little
by afternoon, and go completely clear overnight, setting the stage for
a little taste of fall. Readings by Monday morning will be near 60 in
most locations and we will likely even see a few 50s by Tuesday
morning. Get ready for a fine spate of September weather Tuesday
through Friday, with highs right around 80 each day and lows around
60. If we are lucky, there could be a high in the 70s or a low in the
50s somewhere in there. By Saturday, we will see a big high pressure
system building southward out of New England into that familiar
position that can generate a moist flow into Alabama from the east.
This will generate some clouds and showers as we head into the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather approaching the Bahamas
has not gotten its act together, thanks to a good deal of shear and it
is harmlessly steaming along to the west northwest. It does have a
good pedigree, counting parts of Josephine's remnants as its DNA.
Another area of disturbed weather is over the Central Atlantic. It is
undergoing a good deal of shear for now, but that may decrease by
Monday, and this system could become a tropical depression next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1860: The middle Gulf Coast was struck by its second
major hurricane in just over one month. This hurricane passed over
the southeastern tip of Louisiana then made landfall on the
Mississippi coast, very close to the path of its predecessor. Near
record storm surge inundation occurred to the east of the landfall
point. The storm surge at Mobile was reportedly only 18 inches lower
than the mark established during the 1852 hurricane.
