...Dry East; Showers West...

One batch of showers moved across Northwest Alabama and into the
Tennessee Valley overnight. Much of the precipitation evaporated
before reaching the ground, but as the atmosphere moistened up, mostly
light rain was reported. Another batch was moving across West Alabama
late this morning. Again, rainfall amounts will be light. Drier air
over East Alabama will limit the possibilities for rain to mainly
sprinkles. Skies will be mostly cloudy through tomorrow with better
chances for sun over eastern sections. Expect this situation to
continue through part of Sunday, until drier air begins to take
control of all of Alabama's weather later tomorrow.

FALL BEGINS MONDAY: Fall officially arrives on Monday at 10:44 a.m.
CDT. And the week ahead should be fairly seasonal. Increasing
amounts of sunshine will be featured in the coming week, with daily
highs in the lower 80s and overnight lows in the lower 60s for the
most part. The same easterly flow pattern looks to be in place into
next weekend, meaning more of the same
in the weather department.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Bama is in Fayetteville to take on Arkansas for a
late morning kickoff. Just a slight chance of a shower or storm.
Gametime temperatures will be in the upper 70s. The Old Gray Lady
will be host to Alabama State and UAB at 3 p.m. Mostly dry conditions
expected. Maybe a sprinkle or shower. Temperatures starting out in
the upper 70s and falling slowly during the game. Auburn and LSU will
be played under dry conditions. Just a small risk of a shower this
evening on the Plains. Temperatures will fall back into the 60s during
the contest.

RECORD BIN: The 85F high at Kalispell, MT Friday was a record for
the date. The 94F at Boise, ID tied a record for the date. 36F is a
threshold temperature for light frost. Yesterday, Fairbanks, AK
reached 36F for the first time this season. It is the latest that has
ever occurred at the station. Light frost was reported on the
hillsides around the city.

SEVERE WEATHER THIS WEEK: Another sign of the changing seasons:
severe weather is possible over the northern and central Plains on
Sunday and Monday as a shortwave trough moves across the area.
Supercell storms will be possible.

TROPICS: We expect approaching weather systems to spread bad weather
ahead of them. Not the case with tropical waves. They are preceded
by generally fine weather, with shower activity on the backside of
them. That's the case this morning over the eastern Caribbean, where
a wave is moving to the west. Showers are over the Lesser Antilles.
This system is encountering unfavourable upper level winds, but that
situation should change over the Caribbean this week. Tropical
cyclone development is possible. The models hint at the development
of some type of hybrid low off the coast of the Southeast U.S. in the
week ahead, but no real handle on this possibility yet. The GFS and
other global models predict that a tropical cyclone may develop over
the eastern Atlantic this week. It should curve out to sea, well east
of the islands.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Devastating hurricane struck the Louisiana
coast, coming ashore 50 miles west of New Orleans, near Houma around
8pm. The hurricane was as intense as the Galveston Hurricane of 1900
with a central pressure of 931 mb. 350 people were killed as a large
section of the Louisiana coast was inundated. Storm surge reached 15
feet in the Timbalier Bay area.
