...Weather Settling Down...

IKE IS GONE; FIRST HINT OF AUTUMN: It is time for a change in Alabama
weather. After several days of waiting on Ike to make up his mind and
then having to watch him cause major destruction for our neighbor's
west of here, it is time to bring in some more relaxing weather.

Indeed, on our weather plate we are serving the first hint of autumn.
I should not jump the gun too quickly since we have a cool front
struggling to get through the state and it was setting off some
scattered showers this afternoon, including some thunderstorms in the
extreme SE. Those should end later tonight and you will feel the lower
humidity and more pleasant temperatures starting tomorrow and lasting
for several days. We will see some low temperatures in the 50s in some
of the North Alabama valleys for the next several nights and most
daytime highs will be between 80 and 83 with the added benefit of
lower humidity. Some showers may return by late Friday and a better
chance of some scattered showers next Saturday.
We have enough material to almost write a book today. We do not have
the space here, but let's list a few rain amounts for the last 24
hours. 1.07 Alabaster/Navajo Pines, 0.91 Huntsville and 0.68 at Shelby
County Airport.

THE DRAMA OF HURRICANE IKE: We have watched hurricanes come ashore
for many years. Technology in the last 10 years allows us to watch
every step of the way as the first outer bands come on shore and
finally the eye. It was a long night Friday night watching Ike come in
over Galveston. It is an eerie feeling, because you sit helplessly and
know that people's lives are being ruined, all their property being
destroyed and maybe even losing their life. After making landfall at
Galveston after midnight, he continued north, spreading misery over a
wide area. It is interesting to note that when Ike got up in the
center part of the country, he met the remnants of Tropical Depression
Lowell that had come all the way from the Eastern Pacific. Together
they absolutely flooded many areas in the Midwest and also produced
some high winds. A few of the rain amounts from the entire drama:
15.75 inches at Houston; 5.78 Denham Springs, Louisiana; 5.09 Big
Fork, Arkansas; 8.93 Clinton, Missouri; 11.02 Udall, Kansas; 11.83
Fairview, Oklahoma; 10.40 Peotone, Illinois and 11.46 at Portage,
Indiana. All I can say is wow!

THE TROPICS NOW: We are in a quiet time. No immediate threats of new
tropical storms.

CANADA GEESE WATCH: Bonnie Jackson, one of our subscribers in Saranac
Lake, New York, says that Canada geese are gathering in the field
nearby, probably planning their fall trip. Will keep watching them.
When they do take off and head south, there is a huge flock and they
are very noisy…other hints of autumn, a low of 19 this morning at
Chandalar Lake, Alaska and 16 at Alert in extreme North Canada with
freezing drizzle.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sorry I had to omit mention of Molly
Friday. Ran completely out of space. Have tried over the weekend to
spend more time with her. She never gets enough. After living with
Molly six years and bonded together like glue, I often wonder why
humans are so hard to entertain. I have always enjoyed the more simple
things of life and Molly has trained me to be more easily entertained.
One of my greatest pleasures is playing with her and loving her. Life
goes on.
