...Fall To Tease This Week...

If I told you that you could have some much needed rain, followed by
some cooler air later in the week…some lows in the lower 70s and maybe
even a high or two in the seventies…would that interest you? That's
what I thought…

IKE EXITS: Tropical Depression Ike is over southeastern Missouri this
morning. It is moving to the northeast quickly, at over 35 miles per
hour. There will be a minimal tornado threat today from southern
Illinois and western Kentucky into Ohio and Pennsylvania.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A warm and humid airmass covers Alabama this
morning. To the west, Ike is scooting out ahead of an upper level
trough dropping through the Plains states. The remnant low will drag
a cold front eastward across the Deep South today. Showers and storms
should break out and move into the area this afternoon. They will
continue moving eastward through the evening. The front will be
running up against a stubborn subtropical high over Florida and the
western Atlantic. It should slow across the area overnight, and
hopefully will hang around long enough to bring a continued chance of
rain for at least part of Monday. But it might get far enough to the
east to allow for some 60s overnight over western sections of the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday should start off cloudy and damp, with those
leftover showers continuing. The clouds and precipitation, along
with a freshening northerly wind might help to hold the mercury in the
70s in a few locations for Monday highs. Skies should clear a little
by afternoon, and go completely clear overnight, setting the stage for
a little taste of fall. Readings by Monday morning will be near 60 in
most locations and we will likely even see a few 50s by Tuesday
morning. Get ready for a fine spate of September weather Tuesday
through Friday, with highs right around 80 each day and lows around
60. If we are lucky, there could be a high in the 70s or a low in the
50s somewhere in there. By Saturday, we will see a big high pressure
system building southward out of New England into that familiar
position that can generate a moist flow into Alabama from the east.
This will generate some clouds and showers as we head into the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather approaching the Bahamas
has not gotten its act together, thanks to a good deal of shear and it
is harmlessly steaming along to the west northwest. It does have a
good pedigree, counting parts of Josephine's remnants as its DNA.
Another area of disturbed weather is over the Central Atlantic. It is
undergoing a good deal of shear for now, but that may decrease by
Monday, and this system could become a tropical depression next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1860: The middle Gulf Coast was struck by its second
major hurricane in just over one month. This hurricane passed over
the southeastern tip of Louisiana then made landfall on the
Mississippi coast, very close to the path of its predecessor. Near
record storm surge inundation occurred to the east of the landfall
point. The storm surge at Mobile was reportedly only 18 inches lower
than the mark established during the 1852 hurricane.
