...Damp Saturday...

A northeast/southwest band of rain stretched across Alabama at late
morning, but it was slowly moving east. Rainfall amounts have been
light this morning. The rain will gradually exit eastern sections
later today.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Skies will clear late this evening across the
area, setting the stage for a nice Sunday. It will be partly cloudy
and seasonable tomorrow, with highs in the lower 70s. But the respite
will be of a short duration as a warm front comes back north by Sunday
evening, bringing back the clouds and rain chances overnight.

WET START TO THE WEEK: By Monday morning, moisture will be back at
tropical levels across Alabama. Rain chances will be high on Monday,
and probably again on Tuesday. A front late Tuesday will give us
another break from the rain through Thursday until another front
brings back wet weather on Friday. The weekend could be wet again.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Folks in Fayetteville woke up to fog this
morning, but the Arkansas defenders may find themselves in a
football fog as Gene Chizik's Tigers bring their high flying offense
in and put their number 17 ranking on the line. Oh, don't worry about
the weather. You will be able to see the field just fine with the fog
burned away and just partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will feel like
football, remaining in the 50s through the game. 'Bama and Ole Miss
tangle in Oxford this afternoon. It will be mostly cloudy for this
pivotal SEC West showdown. It will be on the coolish side with
temperatures dropping from around 61F at kickoff. Just a few spits
and sputters of rain and a light north wind.

BASEBALL WEATHER? Temperatures in the 20s, fog and a little freezing
drizzle. It's baseball weather in Colorado. MLB has postponed
tonight's pivotal Game 3 of the series between the Rockies and
Phillies, rescheduling it for Sunday night.

TROPICS: Nothing to talk about in the tropical Atlantic. A
disturbance moving along the north coast of South America is too close
to
land for development. The remnants of Henri are barely discernible as
they track north of the Dominican Republic.

NUMEROUS REPORTS OF WIND DAMAGE: Nearly 150 reports of wind damage
yesterday from Louisiana and Arkansas into Mississippi, Alabama,
Tennessee and Kentucky. Two fatalities were reported, including one
at Creole in Cameron Parish, Louisiana and one at Wayside,
Mississippi, south of Greenville. Two tornadoes were reported in
Kentucky, and I heard of at least one in the Huntsville Weather
Service's area of responsibility. I am sure we will hear of a couple
of more when the reports are sifted
out later today.

WEATHERBRAINS: Looking forward to our first annual WeatherBrains
rant show this Monday night. Got something relating to weather that
gets your goat? Something that steams your shorts? Something that
really sets you off? Tell us about at email@weatherbrains.com. The
show will be available by late Monday night at www.WeatherBrains.com
or on iTunes. Follow our tweets for WeatherBrains on Twitter
@weatherbrains.

ON THE DATE IN 2008: Boise, Idaho picked up 1.7 inches on snow, the
earliest measurable snowfall there in 111 years of records. Follow my

...Stormy Friday; Gloomy Saturday...

Friday felt more like a July day in terms of temperatures and
humidity. Highs soared into the upper 80s for the most part, with
several stations posting 90F or higher. Dewpoints were way up there,
in the lower 70s, making it feel more like July than October. The
fuel was there for thunderstorms, and the spark came in the form of a
cool front.

YOUR WEEKEND: That front is over South Alabama this morning. Rain
will be likely during the morning, tapering by lunchtime and ending
during the afternoon. After the warm readings of yesterday, today's
highs in the 60s will feel quite chilly by comparison. Tonight should
be dry and so should Sunday, with some sunshine and highs in the 70s.

MOISTURE RETURNS QUICKLY: The front is over South Alabama this
morning. It will start coming back northward as a warm front by
Sunday night, bringing with it a chance of more rain. Showers will be
with us Monday and Tuesday, actually a little more likely on Tuesday,
and many locations could pick up another inch of rain. Wednesday
should see a short respite from the rain, but clouds will increase by
Thursday with rain returning for late Thursday night through Friday.
It will be the weekend. It is supposed to rain.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn travels to Fayetteville to play the
Arkansas Razorbacks at 11:00; the weather will be cool and dry with a
sunny sky and a temperature in the low to mid 50s at kickoff, rising
into the upper 50s by the second half of the game. And, Alabama will
play Ole Miss at Oxford (2:30 kickoff). A few lingering showers are
possible. The kickoff temperature will be near 65 degrees, dropping
into the 50s by the final whistle.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be eerily quiet. The
remnants of Henri are so disorganized as they pass north of the
Dominican Republic that regeneration doesn't look possible. That
vigorous tropical wave that was so far to the south as it approached
the Lesser Antilles actually ended up running into land over South
America and the National Hurricane Center gives it little chance for
development.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all about
weather. Eve Gruntfest from the Social Sciences Woven into
Meteorology was our guest. She was extremely entertaining. This
week, it is our first annual rant show with famed Alabama radio
broadcaster Don Keith. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe
on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Boston records its earliest measurable snowfall
ever. Worcester MA picks up over 7 inches, the most snow ever
recorded so early in the season. Richmond VA reported its earliest
snowfall ever. Snow was reported over a widespread area from Maryland
into southern New England. The World Series game in Baltimore had to
be postponed. The temperature at Philadelphia at mid-afternoon was
cold enough to establish a new record low for the date! Follow my
weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Unwelcome Thunderstorms...

THUNDERSTORMS JUST WILL NOT GO AWAY: They have long overstayed their
welcome. We have had so many the last few months that even the novelty
of watching the beautiful lightning is getting old. We are overloaded
with rain amounts. Much of the soil around the state of Alabama is as
soggy as can be and many of the reservoirs are completely full. The
last level I saw from Lake Purdy was one-half foot over full. That is
the main water source for metropolitan Birmingham.

Enough of that, we must turn to more serious weather problems at hand.
Earlier this afternoon a Tornado Watch was issued for six NW Alabama
counties. Later this afternoon, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was posted
for numerous counties in North and part of Central Alabama including
all areas down as far as the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, Anniston
area.

Tornado Watches were also in effect for much of North Mississippi and
into Middle Tennessee. A long line of thunderstorms, many of them
severe, extended from Middle Tennessee down across NW Alabama into NE
and Central Mississippi. A Tornado Warning was issued for one extreme
NW Alabama county and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning near Hackleburg.
These storms will progress eastward the remainder of this afternoon
and well into tonight.

Besides all of the loud thunder and possible severe storms, we could
also have some flash flooding issues, especially in those areas that
do not drain very easily. We are projecting for Central Alabama
between 1 and 2 inches of rain between now and Saturday night.

There will still be some thunderstorms around Sunday morning, but the
best chance will be south of Birmingham. Do not be too encouraged,
because we expect more showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday
and during those 2 days, we could get an additional 1 inch or more of
rain. The old rain surplus just keeps building higher and higher. We
are already at 1 foot above average
at Birmingham Airport.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Much caution is advised for high school games this
evening, not only because of moderate to heavy rain at times,
dangerous lightning needs to be watched very closely. For college
football tomorrow, Auburn will be playing Arkansas in Fayetteville at
11:30. They have had a lot of rain, but the weather for the game looks
near perfect. All sunshine, cool with upper 50s at kick off and about
62 at the final whistle. Alabama will be in Oxford to play Old Miss at
2:30. Cool weather there also with 62 at kick off and about 56 for the
final whistle. There is a chance of a little lingering rain at the
beginning.

AT THE BEACH: The National Shrimp Festival continues through the
weekend at Gulf Shores. Unfortunately, the weather is not very good.
Showers and storms will be numerous at times Saturday and still a good
chance on Sunday. High temperatures 80 to 83.

MY TINY CORNER OF THEWORLD: Little Miss Molly will be ready to go
into seclusion at the first peal of thunder later this afternoon and
she will be hid most of the night. I will be up all night and will
have no time to play with her. I will make it up tomorrow.

...A Big Soaking Late Tonight and Tomorrow...

MORE RAIN AHEAD: A very moist, tropical airmass covers Alabama this
morning, and our weather will feel more like summer today with
afternoon highs rising into the mid to upper 80s. If we reach our
forecast high today of 87, that will be within 4 degrees of the record
high for October 9, 91 set back in 1941. While we will see the sun at
times, the day will be generally cloudy, and a few scattered showers
could break out this afternoon.

A more organized band of rain and storms will move into Alabama
tonight, ahead of a cold front. A few strong to severe storms are
possible this evening over Northwest Alabama, but no major overnight
severe weather problems are expected. Tomorrow promises to be a cooler
day, with a cloudy sky and periods of rain. Then, by Sunday, the
surface boundary will be close to Montgomery, so for North Alabama
that day should be mostly dry with lingering clouds and just a small
risk of a stray shower. We are projecting rain amounts of 1 to 2
inches tonight and tomorrow, with potential for locally heavier amounts.

NEXT WEEK: A wave of low pressure forming on the front to the south
will bring a chance of showers to all of the state Monday. Then, drier
air will creep into North Alabama Tuesday with gradual clearing, and
all of Alabama will be dry Wednesday. Upper air winds will keep the
really chilly air north of Alabama. Then, another storm system will a
chance of rain toward the end of the week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school football games, some rain
is likely, especially over North and West Alabama, with temperatures
in the mid to upper 70s during the games. Tomorrow, Auburn travels to
Fayetteville to play the Arkansas Razorbacks at 11:00; the weather
will be cool and dry with a sunny sky and a temperature in the low to
mid 50s at kickoff, rising into the upper 50s by the second half of
the game. And, Alabama will play Ole Miss at Oxford (2:30 kickoff).
While the heaviest rain should be over by gametime, a few lingering
showers are possible. The kickoff temperature will be near 65 degrees,
dropping into the 50s by the final whistle.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: A big crowd is on the Alabama Gulf Coast for
the annual event; showers and storms are possible on a daily basis
through Sunday with afternoon highs mostly in the low 80s. There will
be a few peeks of sun from time to time.

BIG CHILL: Very cold air for October will move down into the northern
U.S. during the next 48 hours, there is a chance of a little snow in
Chicago tomorrow night and early Sunday. If the snow sticks, it would
be the earliest recorded measurable snowfall in Chicago. The record
was set just three years ago when it snowed on Oct. 12. Parts of
Montana and Wyoming are expected to drop to near zero degrees by
daybreak Sunday. Today's forecast high in Cut Bank, Montana is 19
degrees with a wind chill near zero along with four inches of snow on
the ground.

...The Changes Keep Coming...

ONE-DAY VACATION FROM RAIN: The weather just will not settle down. It
is misbehaving for this time of year. Rain is no stranger this month
and in recent months.

However, we are at least getting a one day break from rain today and
that interlude may extend to a good bit of Friday, but not all day.
Some scattered showers will reach our area Friday afternoon as
unseasonably warm air and very humid air spreads north from our
friend, the Gulf of Mexico. Those showers and thunderstorms may become
numerous at times Friday night. On Saturday, another cool front should
be across Central Alabama in the general vicinity of Birmingham. We
see no reason why showers and storms should not still be around early
Saturday. By afternoon, most of them should be further down state.
This will lead us into some breezy and cooler weather for Sunday. We
will have occasional rain, mainly during the morning. Still a chance,
however, of
scattered showers on Columbus Day, which is next Monday.

It was unseasonably warm across a good part of Alabama this afternoon.
Fairhope had already reached 90 degrees with a heat index of 102. We
do not normally mention the heat index in October. That shows you how
unusual our weather has been lately. The heat index was 99 at Gulf
Shores.

AT THE BEACH: I believe the Shrimp Festival is this weekend.
Unfortunately, showers and thunderstorms will be there too, especially
Saturday and Sunday. It will be quite warm. Highs 82 to 88.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Henri never had a chance. Not only was he difficult
to pronounce, but he is expected to dissipate later today. Sustained
winds were down to only 35 mph and he was 130 miles NNE of the North
Leeward Islands. A tropical wave was 350 miles east of the Southern
Leeward Islands. That system is discombobulated and does not show much
promise.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games this evening, the weather
looks generally good. Only a small risk of a shower during the game
and temperatures will be in the 70s. We understand that many high
schools switched their games to tonight instead of Friday night. That
was probably a very good move. Showers and storms should be on the
increase Friday night. On Saturday, Auburn will be in Fayetteville for
an 11:00 a.m. clash with Arkansas. It should be mostly sunny and quite
cool with game time temperatures 55 to 58 and a brisk wind at times.
Alabama will play Old Miss in Oxford for a 2:30 kick off. It will be
mostly cloudy with 68 at kick off lowering to 62 by the final whistle.
Unfortunately, there is still a good chance of showers at some point
during the game.

THE GOOD OLD USA: 101 at Laredo gave them the honor of being the
hottest in the USA for at least the second time in a row yesterday.
This morning it was 9 above inside Yellowstone National Park where
there was snow on the ground and 10 at Arctic Village, Alaska. 8
inches of snow on the ground at Deadwood, South Dakota and 6 inches at
Lander and Sunshine, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is rare, but we all went to bed soon
after 9:00 last night because I was operating on 90 minutes of sleep
the previous 24 hours. We took Molly to bed at that time. Lo and
behold, shortly after 4 this morning, I felt a wet nose rubbing my
nose. For the first time ever, she used that trick to wake me up and
demand to go to the bathroom. Out we went well before daybreak. Later
we took our usual long morning walk. I have to drive with as much
caution as a motorist on US-280 in rush hour, because I can never be
sure what Molly will do. We met an obese earthworm heading slowly
south, probably for the winter. Molly was about ready to use it as a
snack. I pulled her back at the last second. Ten seconds later she
went airborne off the track and landed in the middle of a flower
garden and almost jerked me down. She was trying to catch a juvenile
butterfly who was smelling the roses. A lot more happened, but I am
out of space. Life goes on.

...Summer-Like Warmth Today...

INTO THE 80s TODAY: A strong upper high that has been parked over
Florida in recent days will nudge into Alabama today, meaning a
considerably warmer day with afternoon temperatures peaking in the mid
80s. The warm air aloft associated with the upper ridge should keep
the day mostly dry, although a few isolated showers could spring up
this afternoon.

MORE RAIN: Tomorrow promises to be a very warm and humid day;
temperatures go back into the 80s with dewpoints up in the low 70s. A
few showers will begin to break out tomorrow afternoon, but the most
widespread rain will begin tomorrow night as a deep long wave upper
trough approaches from the west. Saturday looks wet statewide as the
surface front makes only slow southward progress; rain totals between
1 and 2 inches are likely before the rain tapers late in the day
Saturday. By Sunday, the front should be near Montgomery, meaning most
of the showers will be over the southern half of the state.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most high school stadiums tonight will be rain-free,
with only a slight risk of a shower. Temperatures will be generally in
the mid to upper 70s during the games. For tomorrow night's games;
showers are likely, along with the possibility of a thunderstorm.
Temperatures once again will be in the 70s, and rain gear is in order.
Saturday, Auburn is at Arkansas for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff. The sky at
Fayetteville will be delightful; the game will be played under a sunny
sky with kickoff temperature near 62 degrees, rising into the mid 60s
during the game. Alabama is also on the road; they will play Ole Miss
at Oxford Saturday at 2:30; the sky will be mostly cloudy with a
passing shower or two possible during the game. The kickoff
temperature will be near 68 degrees, falling into the low 60s by the
final whistle.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: Thousands of people will stream into Gulf
Shores this weekend; the sky will be mostly cloudy tomorrow through
Sunday with a good chance of showers and storms each day. No all-day
rain; about 1 to 2 hours of rain daily with afternoon highs in the low
to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: A wave of low pressure is expected to form on the front
south of here, and that could bring a few showers on Monday, mainly
for the eastern side of the state. Then, a nice surge of cool, dry air
works in here for some very nice fall weather Tuesday and Wednesday,
with a sunny sky both days and cooler temperatures.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Henri is now encountering strong winds aloft
in the Atlantic northeast of the Leeward Islands; it should dissipate
within the next 36 hours. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin remains quiet,
and additional tropical storm formation is not expected through early
next week.

...Weather Will Not Slow Down...

BUSY, BUSY WEATHER: October is supposed to be a semi-leisure time for
weather forecasters and John Q. Public. After all it is the heart of
the football season, the first autumn foliage is showing up, nights
are cooler, a lot of the days have bright blue skies with pleasant
temperatures. It is also typically the driest month of the year. This
month seems determined to reverse the old stereotype. So, here we go
with more quick changes.

Some very, very noisy thunderstorms overnight. They frightened a lot
of people because of the exceptional
lightning and the window-rattling thunder. A lot of people stayed up
all night. We list only a small sample of overnight rain amounts.

2.40 Huntsville Airport
2.04 Anniston Airport
3.00 Oxford
1.17 Logan Martin Dam
1.04 Dora

NO GOOD BREAK FROM THE RAIN: We will get a break, of sorts, from the
rain tonight and Thursday. Even tomorrow there is a slight chance of a
shower or thunderstorm by afternoon. It will also be a lot warmer
tomorrow reaching the mid 80s. Friday will be another story. Scattered
showers and storms should show up by afternoon and become numerous at
times Friday night. We now believe that the showers and thunderstorms
will continue at least until Saturday morning. It will be cooler over
the weekend with lows between 60 and 64 and highs in the mid 70s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are a bit early with that this week because so
many people will be travelling out of state to Oxford and
Fayetteville. It does not look good for high school games here in
Alabama Friday night. A good chance of showers and storms still in
progress at game time. In college football Saturday, Auburn will be at
Arkansas for an 11:00 a.m. game. We believe Fayetteville will have
fair dry weather, rather cool with a high only about 62. Alabama will
be in Oxford to play Old Miss in a 2:30 kick off. It should be near 68
degrees at kick off. We will fine tune this product tomorrow.

AGRICULTURE WEATHER: Very good reports this week from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field Office. Amazingly, 97% of
Alabama topsoil has adequate or surplus moisture. What a huge
difference from two years ago. Almost all the crops were in good to
excellent condition.

ROAMING: 102 in Laredo, Texas was the hot place yesterday. Low
temperatures this morning included 11 at Big Piney, Wyoming and 3
above at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. We could not help but notice a strong
1044mb high pressure area building up over the far Northwest in Canada
and Alaska by Friday. This hints that we will have a significant
invasion of cold air into the northern U.S. by this weekend.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The lightning was flashing like
photographic light bulbs. The thunder sounded like explosions. The
windows rattled. The house shook. Little Miss Molly was sound asleep,
but when all of that commotion started, she insisted that we let her
out of the master bedroom so she could go to one of her many safe
spots when the thunder roars. She stayed behind my favourite chair in
the corner of the living area until it all was over. She is the poster
child of being afraid of lightning and thunder. Life goes on. She will
sleep all day to recover. J. B. Elliott

...Drier Air Slips In This Afternoon...

MORE FAST PACED CHANGES: Weather changes will come fast and furious in
coming days across the Deep South. We begin today with clouds and some
lingering showers and storms. Almost all of those should be into
Georgia by mid-morning, and the sky should become partly sunny this
afternoon as drier air creeps into the state. Expect mostly clear
weather tonight as the dry air stays in place.

TOMORROW: Tomorrow will be noticeably warmer; a little taste of summer
with highs up into the low to mid 80s along with a good supply of
sunshine. There will be enough moisture for a few scattered, mostly
afternoon and evening showers and storms. However, warm air aloft
associated with a strong upper high nosing in from the south should
keep the showers fairly widely scattered, and most communities will be
dry during the day.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Clouds will increase Friday ahead of a strong,
phased upper trough over the Central U.S., and a few showers could
break as early as Friday afternoon. Then, rain and storms are likely
Friday night, meaning another week when you will to take the rain gear
to high football games across Alabama. There could be some thunder and
lightning involved.

The surface front will come to a halt somewhere across Central Alabama
Saturday as it becomes parallel to the upper air flow. The exact place
where the front stops holds the key to our weekend forecast. For now,
we will continue to assume the front will hang up somewhere around
I-59; if this is correct areas from Gadsden-Birmingham-Tucscaloosa
will have occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. To the
north, across the northern third of the state, much of the day
Saturday should be dry. For Sunday, it appears the best chance of
showers will come over the southern half of the state. Highs over the
weekend will be in the low to mid 70s.

HELLO HENRI: Tropical Storm Henri (pronounced ahn-REE) formed
yesterday in the Atlantic, and is now about 500 miles east of the
Leeward Islands. The storm will drift to the northwest in coming days,
and strong winds aloft near the system should mean that it weakens by
the weekend, and is no threat to land. The rest of the Atlantic basin
is quiet.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: This is the big weekend in Gulf Shores; you
will have to dodge occasional showers and storms Friday through
Sunday, with highs mostly in the low 80s along the immediate coast.
The sun might peek out at times, but no doubt the weather will be
unsettled on the coast this weekend.

BIG CHILL UP NORTH: Amazingly cold air for early October will cross
from Canada down into the northern U.S.
in coming days. In Cutbank, Montana, the forecast high is only 20
degrees, followed by a low of 6 degrees Saturday morning. And, there
should be a nice snow cover with periods of snow likely each day for
the rest of the week.

...More Quick Changes...

NOT MANY DRY DAYS:  The Alabama weather story is a continuing one of unsettled weather which means fairly quick and frequent changes. Today a warm front has been pushing northward through the state and by this afternoon the temperature was in the 70s in almost all sections. The dew point had climbed to near 70 or more in most of the state (translation: atmosphere becoming more moist). In South Alabama, Greenville was reporting 84 degrees this afternoon. Evergreen had 86 and Mobile 85.

Off to the west, we are watching a line of showers and thunderstorms progressing eastward. Even so, there is a little bit of good news about that. Earlier today the Storm Prediction Center had included North Mississippi and NW Alabama, as far south as Birmingham, in a Slight Risk of severe weather overnight. In their noon update, they eliminated the Alabama and Mississippi part.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS:  They will increase as the night goes on as that zone of unsettled weather moves through. The storms should end Wednesday morning. The sky will partially clear later in the day.

OUR NICEST DAY:  Looks like that will be Thursday when we are leaving out any mention of rain and storms. There will be more sun than clouds and high temperatures will be in the lower 80s. Friday will be just as warm, but the rest of Friday news is not good. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase in number by afternoon and especially by Friday night. This does not bode well for Friday night high school football, but it is too early to be assured of that. The showers and thunderstorms should end early Saturday and most of the day will be dry.

TROPICAL WEATHER:  The Great Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic, the Caribbean and our good friend the Gulf of Mexico, is stubborn about giving us any tropical storms or hurricanes. Mind you, that is good news. There is a low-pressure area 475 miles east of the Leeward Islands. However, the winds aloft are strong which negates much of a prospect for development. The Pacific has been much more active and Typhoon Melor may
threaten part of Japan by tomorrow.

SCANNING NORTH AMERICA:  101 in Laredo was the USA hot spot yesterday. Some cold temperatures this morning included 9 at Big Piney and West Yellowstone, Wyoming. 6 at Daniel, Wyoming (that was the coldest). It was 10 in Yellowstone National Park and 18 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. 13 inches of snow at Lander, Wyoming and 8 inches at Beartooth Lake, Wyoming.

SEVERE WEATHER:  Even though the SPC removed Alabama from the threat, there is a slight risk this afternoon and evening for much of Central Texas and into North Louisiana and South Arkansas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD:  Tom Taylor is the human grandfather of little Dino. He walks that cute little puppy several times a day around the walking track. Often Little Miss Molly and I will join in the walk. If not, Molly has hysterics when she sees Dino go by and she cannot play with him. Molly and I had a very early walk this morning and she is still upset at the CC (Community Cat) who charged out of the hedgerow and almost ran over her well over a week ago. She tried to dive into the hedgerow this morning to see if the cat was there. It was so wet outside that Molly was wet up to her tummy when we got home. She uses the living area carpet as a towel to dry herself. Life goes on. What would we do without Little Miss Molly?

...More Quick Changes...

NOT MANY DRY DAYS: The Alabama weather story is a continuing one of
unsettled weather which means fairly quick and frequent changes. Today
a warm front has been pushing northward through the state and by this
afternoon the temperature was in the 70s in almost all sections. The
dew point had climbed to near 70 or more in most of the state
(translation: atmosphere becoming more moist). In South Alabama,
Greenville was reporting 84 degrees this afternoon. Evergreen had 86
and Mobile 85.

Off to the west, we are watching a line of showers and thunderstorms
progressing eastward. Even so, there is a little bit of good news
about that. Earlier today the Storm Prediction Center had included
North Mississippi and NW Alabama, as far south as Birmingham, in a
Slight Risk of severe weather overnight. In their noon update, they
eliminated the Alabama and Mississippi part.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS: They will increase as the night goes on as
that zone of unsettled weather moves through. The storms should end
Wednesday morning. The sky will partially clear later in the day.

OUR NICEST DAY: Looks like that will be Thursday when we are leaving
out any mention of rain and storms. There will be more sun than clouds
and high temperatures will be in the lower 80s. Friday will be just as
warm, but the rest of Friday news is not good. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms will increase in number by afternoon and especially by
Friday night. This does not bode well for Friday night high school
football, but it is too early to be assured of that. The showers and
thunderstorms should end early Saturday and most of the day will be dry.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Great Atlantic Basin, which includes the
Atlantic, the Caribbean and our good friend the Gulf of Mexico, is
stubborn about giving us any tropical storms or hurricanes. Mind you,
that is good news. There is a low-pressure area 475 miles east of the
Leeward Islands. However, the winds aloft are strong which negates
much of a prospect for development. The Pacific has been much more
active and Typhoon Melor may
threaten part of Japan by tomorrow.

SCANNING NORTH AMERICA: 101 in Laredo was the USA hot spot yesterday.
Some cold temperatures this morning included 9 at Big Piney and West
Yellowstone, Wyoming. 6 at Daniel, Wyoming (that was the coldest). It
was 10 in Yellowstone National Park and 18 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.
13 inches of snow at Lander, Wyoming and 8 inches at Beartooth Lake,
Wyoming.

SEVERE WEATHER: Even though the SPC removed Alabama from the threat,
there is a slight risk this afternoon and evening for much of Central
Texas and into North Louisiana and South Arkansas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Tom Taylor is the human grandfather of
little Dino. He walks that cute little puppy several times a day
around the walking track. Often Little Miss Molly and I will join in
the walk. If not, Molly has hysterics when she sees Dino go by and she
cannot play with him. Molly and I had a very early walk this morning
and she is still upset at the CC (Community Cat) who charged out of
the hedgerow and almost ran over her well over a week ago. She tried
to dive into the hedgerow this morning to see if the cat was there. It
was so wet outside that Molly was wet up to her tummy when we got
home. She uses the living area carpet as a towel to dry herself. Life
goes on. What would we do without Little Miss Molly?

...Noticeably Warmer Today...

VERY CHANGEABLE WEATHER: A warm front will pass north of us today,
meaning a warmer day with temperatures reaching the upper 70s this
afternoon. A few neighborhoods could even see low 80s, especially
where the sun breaks out at times. Most of the day will be dry,
although a few scattered showers or storms could fire up this
afternoon as the air becomes unstable. Look for a marked increase in
the number of showers and thunderstorms tonight as the next surface
front approaches; seems like the best window for widespread rain will
come from about 10:00 tonight until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. The sky will
become partly sunny tomorrow afternoon as drier air temporarily filers
into the northern half of the state.

SUMMER-LIKE WARMTH THURSDAY: A strong upper ridge will build into
Alabama from the south Thursday, and should mean a summer-like day
with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the low 80s; parts of
West Alabama could even see the mid 80s. And, the warm air aloft
associated with the ridge should keep a lid on any potential showers
during the afternoon Thursday. On Friday, however, a deep and
progressive upper trough over the central states will get closer to
Alabama, and will mean some risk of showers or storms by the afternoon
hours into Friday night. At first glance it looks like high school
football games will be played under the threat of rain, something that
has been common this season.

OUR WEEKEND: A surface cold front will slip into extreme Northwest
Alabama Saturday, meaning a pretty decent chance of showers and
thunderstorms as we kick off the weekend. That front will become
parallel to the upper air winds, stalling out somewhere across Central
Alabama. Where that happens will determine our weather on Sunday; for
now it looks like the front could be stalled near I-59, meaning we
will have to maintain a chance of showers and storms on Sunday for
Gadsden, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and points south.

TROPICS: NHC upgraded a North Atlantic storm system to Tropical Storm
Grace over the weekend, but it was never a classic warm core tropical
system, and once again is now considered a sub-tropical system. It
remains far out to sea and is no threat to land. Elsewhere, a tropical
wave about 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles has a chance of
becoming a tropical depression today, but it will encounter harsh
upper air winds in about 24 to 36 hours, and it is not expected to
become a major system.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest air so far this season will invade
the northern U.S. this week; by Thursday the high in Great Falls,
Montana will be near 30 degrees with a low close to 10. Periods of
snow are likely across the northern Rocky Mountains this week. In
contrast, an upper air high will bring summer-like warmth to Florida;
places like Orlando and Tampa will be in the low 90s most afternoons.
Here at home, Birmingham's rain surplus for the year is now just under
one foot (11.98").

...Almost Daily Changes...

A WET ALABAMA: Not much dry soil in Alabama today after the weekend
rain wet down practically the entire state.

We could almost call it a state-wide drenching, although there were a
few locations that did not get that much
rain. Many parts of North and Central Alabama received 1 to 2 inches.

All of this recent rain has brought some amazing totals for 2009 so
far. Around midnight Birmingham Airport reached 53.99 inches of rain
for the year so far. This is equal to the average amount for the
entire calendar year. As Bill pointed out last night, we have received
our entire year of rain in only 277 days. Just a few samples of rain
amounts for the last 24 hours:

1.74 Clay/Pinson (Year-to-Date Total: 55.54)
1.85 Bear Creek
2.38 Scrougeout (Year-to-Date Total: 62.38)
2.19 Montgomery
1.93 Tuscaloosa
2.38 Camp Hill

MORE CHANGES AHEAD: That was a real genuine soaker late Sunday and
overnight. We are going to get some more rain as the week goes on. We
will likely see an increase in showers and storms again Tuesday night
then ending by Wednesday afternoon. Next good chance of rain will come
late Friday and Friday night and a few
of those storms could be locally strong.

The atmosphere is saturated, so do not be surprised to see some more
fog forming tonight. Another storm system will develop in the
midsection of the country starting Tuesday. This will pull another
cool front into Alabama by Wednesday morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Grace will become the least known
named storm of the season. Early this afternoon it was centered over
the far NE Atlantic already over colder waters and moving NE rapidly.
Zero threat to the USA or Canada. Sustained winds were 65 mph. A
nervous area of weather was over 900 miles east of the Windward
Islands moving WNW at 15. Gradually becoming stronger and NHC gives it
a chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next 48 hours. After
that, upper winds will start fighting it.

MISCELLANEOUS: SPC thinks there will be a slight risk of severe
thunderstorms Tuesday from Central Texas NE across NW Louisiana and
South Arkansas to NW Mississippi. 97 was the hottest Sunday at Laredo
and McAllen in South Texas. Coldest this morning 12 at Mammoth Lakes,
California and Arctic Village, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My Little Miss Molly had the most
exciting time of her life on two occasions over the weekend. Little
Dino, along with Jo-Jo, the loves of her life, was walking with his
grandpa. They came down into our backyard. Grandpa took the leash off
Dino and he and Molly ran circles around each other until their
tongues were hanging way out. We did not de-leash Molly because she
may have headed for Chattanooga. Next morning, Dino was invited into
our house and he and Molly had another amazing play session for
several minutes. They chased each other everywhere including the back
of the couch which is where Molly keeps a lookout. We died laughing.
Life goes on.

...Closing In On An Average Annual Rainfall...

We are quickly closing in on reaching our average annual rainfall at
the Birmingham Airport. The annual average is 53.99 inches. Sunday
morning, the rainfall total stood at 52.35 inches. By 9 p.m., 1.12
inches had fallen, pushing the total to 53.47 inches. With another
one quarter of an inch of rain expected overnight, we will almost
certainly be less than one half inch short of measuring a year's worth
of rainfall in just over nine months. We have come a long way from
the drought of two years ago.

FOR YOUR MONDAY: The rain should be gone early this morning,
although there could be a few showers during the day. We could see a
little sunshine by afternoon, but don't count on it. With a cool
easterly flow, temperatures today will be limited to the 60s. Clouds
will thin out overnight tonight, with lows dropping into the upper 50s.

MORE WET WEATHER AHEAD: We will see some sunshine Tuesday, along
with a spike in humidity. With partial sunshine, temperatures will
warm into the upper 70s. We could see a few showers and storms
develop during the day. They will increase during the afternoon and
into the overnight as a cold front approaches from the northwest.
Rain should be gone by lunch on Wednesday.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Thursday looks warm and muggy with a slight
chance of a shower or storm. Clouds will increase on Friday ahead of
another
cold front. Showers and storms will become likely Friday night into
Saturday. The front will pass through Saturday, setting the stage for
a really nice week of autumnal weather.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Grace formed over the far northeastern
Atlantic last night. It is small and won't last long. A tropical wave
1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is accompanied by disorganized
shower activity. Some slow organization is possible as this system
moves west northwest over the next couple of days. This system may
eventually reach the Bahamas by the weekend, but the models don't show
any tropical cyclone formation for the next seven days.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, we will talk to one of the world's leading
experts on warnings and human response. Eve Gruntfest will join us
for an enlightening discussion on where we make the warning process
better. Follow our tweets about the WeatherBrains podcast. We are
@weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: More torrid heat across the southern Plains.
The mercury reached 115 degrees at Del Rio TX, 112 at Austin, 111 at
San Antonio and 109 in Corpus Christi on the Texas coast. The
temperature at Galveston TX hit 104 degrees to establish their all-
time high. The heat at Galveston was unprecedented because the
mercury had only reached 100 degrees only once in history before this
week when two 100 degree marks were recorded. The beautiful Texas
coastal city is usually cooled by breeze from the Gulf of Mexico.

What a difference a day makes. Twenty four hours ago, blue skies and
cool temperatures greeted the day. This morning, radars to the west of
Alabama are lit up like Christmas trees with widespread rain and
embedded thunderstorms. A few patches of very light rain were already
tracking across Central Alabama shortly after sunrise. Rain will
continue to increase through the late morning and into the afternoon.
Rain and storms will be likely overnight and into Monday morning, with
some heavy rain possible. Some localized flooding problems could
occur, but flash flood watches have not been issued as of yet.

MESMERIZED BY THE ATMOSPHERE: The ebb and flow of our atmospheric
weather patterns is beautiful. Watching big longwave troughs and
ridges develop on weather maps and water vapor satellite imagery can
be mesmerizing. Currently, an upper low over the west will open up and
stretch into a big trough. South of this, a strong west southwesterly
flow will transport Pacific moisture eastward, including some from
Tropical Storm Olaf. Meanwhile, a big center of high pressure in the
upper atmosphere will rise over the Bahamas and ridge northward into
Alabama at midweek before sliding eastward by the weekend. These are
the big players in our weather over the next few days.

MORE WET WEATHER IN STORE: We will get a little break from the west
weather Monday afternoon. That break will continue into Tuesday. But
it will be short lived. A cold front will approach from the northwest
and as it does, showers and storms will move into the state, becoming
likely Tuesday night. We get another break Wednesday and Thursday as
