...Stormy Friday; Gloomy Saturday...

Friday felt more like a July day in terms of temperatures and
humidity. Highs soared into the upper 80s for the most part, with
several stations posting 90F or higher. Dewpoints were way up there,
in the lower 70s, making it feel more like July than October. The
fuel was there for thunderstorms, and the spark came in the form of a
cool front.

YOUR WEEKEND: That front is over South Alabama this morning. Rain
will be likely during the morning, tapering by lunchtime and ending
during the afternoon. After the warm readings of yesterday, today's
highs in the 60s will feel quite chilly by comparison. Tonight should
be dry and so should Sunday, with some sunshine and highs in the 70s.

MOISTURE RETURNS QUICKLY: The front is over South Alabama this
morning. It will start coming back northward as a warm front by
Sunday night, bringing with it a chance of more rain. Showers will be
with us Monday and Tuesday, actually a little more likely on Tuesday,
and many locations could pick up another inch of rain. Wednesday
should see a short respite from the rain, but clouds will increase by
Thursday with rain returning for late Thursday night through Friday.
It will be the weekend. It is supposed to rain.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn travels to Fayetteville to play the
Arkansas Razorbacks at 11:00; the weather will be cool and dry with a
sunny sky and a temperature in the low to mid 50s at kickoff, rising
into the upper 50s by the second half of the game. And, Alabama will
play Ole Miss at Oxford (2:30 kickoff). A few lingering showers are
possible. The kickoff temperature will be near 65 degrees, dropping
into the 50s by the final whistle.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues to be eerily quiet. The
remnants of Henri are so disorganized as they pass north of the
Dominican Republic that regeneration doesn't look possible. That
vigorous tropical wave that was so far to the south as it approached
the Lesser Antilles actually ended up running into land over South
America and the National Hurricane Center gives it little chance for
development.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all about
weather. Eve Gruntfest from the Social Sciences Woven into
Meteorology was our guest. She was extremely entertaining. This
week, it is our first annual rant show with famed Alabama radio
broadcaster Don Keith. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe
on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Boston records its earliest measurable snowfall
ever. Worcester MA picks up over 7 inches, the most snow ever
recorded so early in the season. Richmond VA reported its earliest
snowfall ever. Snow was reported over a widespread area from Maryland
into southern New England. The World Series game in Baltimore had to
be postponed. The temperature at Philadelphia at mid-afternoon was
cold enough to establish a new record low for the date! Follow my
weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.
