...Weather Will Not Slow Down...
BUSY, BUSY WEATHER: October is supposed to be a semi-leisure time for
weather forecasters and John Q. Public. After all it is the heart of
the football season, the first autumn foliage is showing up, nights
are cooler, a lot of the days have bright blue skies with pleasant
temperatures. It is also typically the driest month of the year. This
month seems determined to reverse the old stereotype. So, here we go
with more quick changes.
Some very, very noisy thunderstorms overnight. They frightened a lot
of people because of the exceptional
lightning and the window-rattling thunder. A lot of people stayed up
all night. We list only a small sample of overnight rain amounts.
2.40 Huntsville Airport
2.04 Anniston Airport
3.00 Oxford
1.17 Logan Martin Dam
1.04 Dora
NO GOOD BREAK FROM THE RAIN: We will get a break, of sorts, from the
rain tonight and Thursday. Even tomorrow there is a slight chance of a
shower or thunderstorm by afternoon. It will also be a lot warmer
tomorrow reaching the mid 80s. Friday will be another story. Scattered
showers and storms should show up by afternoon and become numerous at
times Friday night. We now believe that the showers and thunderstorms
will continue at least until Saturday morning. It will be cooler over
the weekend with lows between 60 and 64 and highs in the mid 70s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are a bit early with that this week because so
many people will be travelling out of state to Oxford and
Fayetteville. It does not look good for high school games here in
Alabama Friday night. A good chance of showers and storms still in
progress at game time. In college football Saturday, Auburn will be at
Arkansas for an 11:00 a.m. game. We believe Fayetteville will have
fair dry weather, rather cool with a high only about 62. Alabama will
be in Oxford to play Old Miss in a 2:30 kick off. It should be near 68
degrees at kick off. We will fine tune this product tomorrow.
AGRICULTURE WEATHER: Very good reports this week from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field Office. Amazingly, 97% of
Alabama topsoil has adequate or surplus moisture. What a huge
difference from two years ago. Almost all the crops were in good to
excellent condition.
ROAMING: 102 in Laredo, Texas was the hot place yesterday. Low
temperatures this morning included 11 at Big Piney, Wyoming and 3
above at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. We could not help but notice a strong
1044mb high pressure area building up over the far Northwest in Canada
and Alaska by Friday. This hints that we will have a significant
invasion of cold air into the northern U.S. by this weekend.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The lightning was flashing like
photographic light bulbs. The thunder sounded like explosions. The
windows rattled. The house shook. Little Miss Molly was sound asleep,
but when all of that commotion started, she insisted that we let her
out of the master bedroom so she could go to one of her many safe
spots when the thunder roars. She stayed behind my favourite chair in
the corner of the living area until it all was over. She is the poster
child of being afraid of lightning and thunder. Life goes on. She will
sleep all day to recover. J. B. Elliott
