...Noticeably Warmer Today...
VERY CHANGEABLE WEATHER: A warm front will pass north of us today,
meaning a warmer day with temperatures reaching the upper 70s this
afternoon. A few neighborhoods could even see low 80s, especially
where the sun breaks out at times. Most of the day will be dry,
although a few scattered showers or storms could fire up this
afternoon as the air becomes unstable. Look for a marked increase in
the number of showers and thunderstorms tonight as the next surface
front approaches; seems like the best window for widespread rain will
come from about 10:00 tonight until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. The sky will
become partly sunny tomorrow afternoon as drier air temporarily filers
into the northern half of the state.
SUMMER-LIKE WARMTH THURSDAY: A strong upper ridge will build into
Alabama from the south Thursday, and should mean a summer-like day
with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the low 80s; parts of
West Alabama could even see the mid 80s. And, the warm air aloft
associated with the ridge should keep a lid on any potential showers
during the afternoon Thursday. On Friday, however, a deep and
progressive upper trough over the central states will get closer to
Alabama, and will mean some risk of showers or storms by the afternoon
hours into Friday night. At first glance it looks like high school
football games will be played under the threat of rain, something that
has been common this season.
OUR WEEKEND: A surface cold front will slip into extreme Northwest
Alabama Saturday, meaning a pretty decent chance of showers and
thunderstorms as we kick off the weekend. That front will become
parallel to the upper air winds, stalling out somewhere across Central
Alabama. Where that happens will determine our weather on Sunday; for
now it looks like the front could be stalled near I-59, meaning we
will have to maintain a chance of showers and storms on Sunday for
Gadsden, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and points south.
TROPICS: NHC upgraded a North Atlantic storm system to Tropical Storm
Grace over the weekend, but it was never a classic warm core tropical
system, and once again is now considered a sub-tropical system. It
remains far out to sea and is no threat to land. Elsewhere, a tropical
wave about 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles has a chance of
becoming a tropical depression today, but it will encounter harsh
upper air winds in about 24 to 36 hours, and it is not expected to
become a major system.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest air so far this season will invade
the northern U.S. this week; by Thursday the high in Great Falls,
Montana will be near 30 degrees with a low close to 10. Periods of
snow are likely across the northern Rocky Mountains this week. In
contrast, an upper air high will bring summer-like warmth to Florida;
places like Orlando and Tampa will be in the low 90s most afternoons.
Here at home, Birmingham's rain surplus for the year is now just under
one foot (11.98").
