...Eyes on Ernesto...

One year ago today, we were very concerned about Hurricane Katrina. Just
365 days later, we are dealing with another potential problem. His name is
Ernesto.

WHAT ABOUT ERNESTO? It is a wait and see situation now as Tropical Storm
Ernesto continues northwestward to the south of the island of Hispaniola.
One of the Greater Antilles, Hispaniola is where you will find Haiti and the
Dominican Republic. Rainfall amounts of up to 20 inches will be possible
across the mountainous island. Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane
later today as it passes near the north coast of the island of Jamaica. It
will then pass along the southern coast of Cuba during the day on Monday
before crossing the island nation Tuesday morning. After this crossing, the
hurricane will be in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

WHERE DOES HE GO? It is hard to say at this time, but there are increasing
indications that the ridge across the northern Gulf will weaken, allowing a
northward shifts in the storm's track. By Thursday afternoon, the hurricane
will be about 150 miles south of the Florida Panhandle.

"DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE SKINNY BLACK LINE": Max Mayfield says that we be
the epitaph on his gravestone. What he means is, beware of the uncertainty.
Ernesto's center could end up anywhere between Lafayette, Louisiana and Key
West, Florida. All interest around the Gulf will have to pay attention to
this one.

INTENSITY: The upper low causing the shear is moving west and a high
pressure system is forecast to form over Ernesto. This will allow
strengthening to begin in earnest. The only inhibiting factor will be the
mountains of Cuba. As it moves into the Gulf, there appears to be nothing
to stop it from intensifying and Ernesto should become a major hurricane.

OUR WEATHER: Oh, yeah, we've got weather. Scattered storms with warm and
humid conditions through Monday. A front will approach on Tuesday giving us
better chances of storms. The front should settle in Central Alabama and
then our forecast will be dependent on what happens with Ernesto.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: The Sea Islands Hurricane came ashore on the Sea
Islands near Beaufort, SC. This was the first of three major hurricanes to
affect the United States between August and October and one of six
hurricanes to hit the U.S. coast that year. Many communities along the
South Carolina coast were inundated by the storm surge. Death toll
estimates range between 2,000 and 2,500. 30,000 people were left homeless.
The Hurricane Season of 1893 was the second most deadly in United States
history, with two of the six hurricanes that made landfall in the U.S. that
year killing 2,000 people apiece.

...Tropical Trouble...

Tropical Storm Ernesto will be our problem for the next six days or so as it
moves toward the Gulf of Mexico. Just where it will end up is the cause of
much speculation in our weather office and multiple others around the
country, especially the NHC.

R&R: Thanks to JB for standing in last night while I attended the
Rockies-Padres game at Coors Field in Denver. A beautiful night and a
beautiful setting for a ballgame.

OUR WEATHER: Moisture levels continue to increase, and we will see scattered
storms each day through Monday. Those storm chances will increase on
Tuesday as a front approaches from the north. The front slides into our
area on Wednesday. The fact that is will make it here is a big problem,
because the trough that allows it may bring tropical trouble northward.

TROPICS: Debbie, down to a depression, will lose tropical characteristics
sometime today over the open waters of the Atlantic. Ernesto is our
problem. The storm should continue moving wet northwest across the
Caribbean, moving into the SE Gulf late early Tuesday. Then the thinking
diverges. There are two major options for the atmosphere it seems at this
time. A ridge of high pressure will hold across the northern Gulf,
deflecting the storm to the northwest toward the western Louisiana or Texas
Coast. But there are increasing indications that the ridge will weaken,
allowing the hurricane to take a more northerly track. This poses an
increased threat from the Central Louisiana coast around Lafayette through
the New Orleans area, over Mississippi and Alabama and then as far east as
the Florida Big Bend area. The official track carries it into the
southeastern Gulf early Tuesday morning, to the middle of the Gulf by
Wednesday morning and to a position 175 miles south of Biloxi.

MARS HOAX: You probably have received the email that says Mars will appear
as large as the full moon tomorrow morning. Just not true. It will be its
normal size. But go outside before dawn tomorrow morning, the 27th, and
see Saturn and Venus having a close encounter in the eastern sky. The two
will appear right next to each other in the brightening dawn. Use
binoculars for a spectacular view.

REMEMBERING KATRINA: One year ago, Katrina had crossed Florida and emerged
into the Gulf. After a brief drop to tropical storm strength, the storm
entered a period of rapid deepening. The morning forecast package indicated
that the hurricane would turn northwest and then north, making a second
landfall near Panama City, Florida in about 72 hours. Much like this week's
upper air forecast, a weakness was developing over the southern U.S.
Through the day, the hurricane's central pressure dropped from 987 millibars
to 965 millibars by late afternoon and top winds increased to 100 mph. The
late afternoon forecast package shifted the official track 150 miles to the
west, with a projected landfall just west of Mobile. Forecasters cautioned
that the track was still very uncertain, and that the models were actually
beginning to agree on an even more westerly landfall in southeastern
Louisiana.

All of the guidance was predicting that Katrina would become a major
hurricane before landfall, with the official forecast calling for Katrina to
intensify into a Category Four hurricane. People along the Gulf Coast fell
into a nervous sleep that Friday night.

...Anxious Week Ahead...

Because of powerful and devastating hurricane Katrina a year ago, the anxiety level will be very high this coming week all around the Gulf coast from Texas to Florida. It is all due to the new kid on the block, Ernesto. The National Hurricane Center projects a path toward the NW passing near Jamaica Sunday and then becoming a hurricane over the NW Caribbean. The projected path is across the very west tip of Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico later Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, he could be over the Central Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane models, while departing somewhat with each other, show generally the same direction. We must caution that a 5-day forecast on a hurricane’s location can be far off the mark, but that is the way it stands now. We must also mention that Ernesto could become a major hurricane in the Gulf. Some of the models turn it northward toward the Mississippi-Alabama coast. Others take it toward Louisiana or Texas. The real answer to all of this is that no one knows. It is a matter of watch and wait.

Meanwhile, moisture will be increasing across Alabama with some scattered thunderstorms showing up this afternoon, especially over the south. Sunday and Monday will also have scattered storms. They should increase in number on Tuesday as another frontal boundary pushes into the state from the NW. That front may go south of here on Wednesday. On the old thermometer, highs will hang around the 90 to 92 mark. We do not see any more 100-degree stuff.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Southern Plains continued to bake Friday. It has been a terrible summer. Highs yesterday included 108 at Wichita Falls and Wink, Texas, 103 at Dallas-Ft. Worth,105 in Oklahoma City, 107 in Stillwater, Okla., and 106 in Winfield, Kansas…we saw a report the other day where some lakes in the Dakotas had gone completely dry from evaporation and strong south winds were actually whipping up blowing dust from the lake bottoms…wildfires in the West continue to be a major problem…the Alabama Forestry Commission is dispatching some Alabama firefighters to out-of-control blazes around Redmond, Oregon…the hottest in the country Friday afternoon was 118 in Death Valley…some snow showers were expected late last night and early this morning in the higher elevations of Yellowstone National Park. That is just a hint of the changing season that we are about ready to see…we had a report earlier this week of trees beginning to turn in Upstate New York…have no idea how autumn foliage will be in Alabama this fall with the erratic rainfall patterns we have gone through all summer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly really had a nice fourth birthday yesterday. We sure do appreciate all the birthday wishes. She got a lot of loving yesterday as well as plenty of playtime. I hope she will be around many more years to keep
me young and active. I burn a lot of energy just because of her but life goes on.

BEST CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND STORMS MONDAY AND TUESDAY: The old
humidity is going to go back up and will make us uncomfortable in the
last part of summer. With high temperatures in the lower 90s over the
weekend, there will be an increase in showers and thunderstorms. We
think they will be rather scarce Saturday with a slightly better
chance of Sunday. Our best chance will be Monday and Tuesday,
especially on Tuesday. During the Monday to Wednesday timeframe, some
communities may receive over an inch of rain. This is because another
frontal boundary is expected to approach us later Tuesday and possibly
slide into Central Alabama by Wednesday morning.

OUR TROPICAL WORLD: Surprised to see a report today that Max
Mayfield, who heads the National Hurricane Center in Miami, will be
retiring next January. Never met him, but I was sure in admiration of
his work. Bill Murray has met him several times and he was a guest on
one of our Weather Brains pod-cast. Back to the business at hand, we
are not concerned about Tropical Storm Debby. She has grown even
weaker over the open waters of the Eastern Atlantic. However, TD #5,
now 340 miles south of San Juan, Puerto Rico, could become Tropical
Storm Ernesto any minute. The official NHC track forecast increases
him to hurricane strength and brings him westward through the
Caribbean to just south of the west tip of Cuba Tuesday morning and
into the SE Gulf of Mexico Wednesday morning.

As usual, we caution that 5 days out could have a lot of error. The
rather wide array of hurricane models tend to generally bring it in
about the same direction. I was checking some sea surface temperatures
at midday and found only 82.6 degrees in the Eastern Caribbean, 83.5
in the western part and a much more compatible 86 degrees in the NW
Caribbean and the Bay of Campeche. For sure, next week is going to be
a time of anxious waiting for the millions of people living on the
Gulf Coast.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 7 million acres of woodlands already consumed
by fire in the Western USA so far this year all the way from Arizona
to Washington and Idaho…10-year average is 4 million acres…104 in
Dallas-Ft. Worth again yesterday, 109 in Wichita Falls and 118 in
Death Valley…4-inch hail at New Prague, Minn., yesterday (that is
grapefruit size!)..a number of tornadoes also with at least one
fatality…snow showers expected late tonight in the interior of
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little stick-tight pal, sometimes
known as Little Miss Molly, is celebrating her fourth birthday today
and she is living the life of Miss Riley. Posted a longer story about
her on the BLOG…she and I have walked a minimum of 1,400 miles since
we have owned her and I give her credit for knocking off 25 of my
pounds…she is so cuddly and warm that when you pick her up and hug her
neck, it is like hugging a small heating pad…in dog years, she is 18
years old. She has just got to live as long as Moses to keep me young.
Life goes on. ....

...Moist Air Slowly Returns...

Our old surface front that was parked over the central part of Alabama
yesterday will dissipate today, and moist air will slowly return to the
northern counties of the state. Accordingly, we will bring back a chance of
widely scattered afternoon showers and storms. Otherwise the day will be hot
and hazy with temperatures topping out in the 90 to 95 degree range in most
spots.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Nothing out of the ordinary for the weekend; partly sunny,
hot days with a chance of scattered afternoon and evening storms both
tomorrow and Sunday. Highs will be mostly in the low 90s, and the chance of
any one spot getting wet around here will be about one in three.

NEXT WEEK: We expect a general increase in the number of showers and storms
during the first half of next week as a surface front approaches from the
north. We will also have watch the Gulf of Mexico closely as the tropics are
coming alive.

FIFTH DEPRESSION FORMS: The fifth tropical depression of the season formed
yesterday in the vicinity of the Windward Islands; it is expected to become
tropical storm Ernesto today as it moves west/northwest through the eastern
Caribbean. This system will have to deal with conditions that aren't the
best for strengthening; there is very dry air in the lower atmosphere in
that region, and upper air winds will be hostile from time to time. But, it
might become a hurricane over the next three or four days.Longer range
computer model guidance suggests Ernesto will enter the southern Gulf of
Mexico early next week. Needless to say, at this phase of the game it is way
too early to call an exact destination, but it seems that the most likely
candidates would be the coast of Mexico, Texas, or perhaps western
Louisiana. That could change, however, so we will wait and watch along with
thousands of nervous folks down on the Gulf coast in areas battered by
hurricanes over the past two years.

FAR OUT DEBBY: Tropical storm Debby in the eastern Atlantic is no threat to
land; it will recurve to the northeast and fade away in the colder water of
the North Atlantic.

AT THE BEACH: No big weather problems for the Gulf coast this weekend; about
7 to 9 hours of sun with a few scattered showers and storms around. The sea
water temperature along the Alabama Gulf coast has been running in the upper
80s. The weather there next week all depends on the tropical system's
behavior.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Yep, its that time of the year. For tomorrow night's
Hoover-UMS Wright season opener at Montgomery's Crampton Bowl, a brief
shower or storm is possible during the first half, otherwise the sky will be
partly cloudy with a kickoff temperature of about 85 degrees. Humidity
levels will be high during the game.

HUMIDITY AND MOISTURE DETERMINED TO COME BACK: I was out walking
with a certain little puppy at sunrise this morning and it sure did
feel good. The temperature was around 63 and the humidity was
noticeably lower. That is a sign of the season. It won't be too much
longer until that will almost be the norm.

But I must not jump too far ahead. The moisture and humidity will
make a rather quick return. Widely scattered thunderstorms this
afternoon will be mainly over the south third of the state, especially
over the extreme south. However, for the I-20/59 corridor northward,
we do not believe there will be any until later in the day tomorrow.
Look for some widely separated thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. After
that there will be a slightly better chance on Saturday and more so on
Sunday and Monday. Again tonight low temperatures will fall into the
mid and upper 60s in the North Alabama valleys. We take a quick look
at some lows this morning: 61 in Cullman and DeSoto State Park, 62 in
Black Creek, Hamilton and SW Huntsville, 63 in Valley Head, Crossville
and Pinson, 64 in Decatur and Muscle Shoals, 65 in Jasper, Ashville,
Ellisville and Gaylesville, 66 in Vinemont, Albertville, Ft. Payne.

The dew point was in the mid 50s this afternoon across the Tennessee
Valley and the mid 60s as far south as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and
Anniston. That is why the humidity felt better today.

ALL ABOUT THE TROPICS: We do not see any concern for the USA about
Tropical Storm Debby way out in the Atlantic. We are very interested
in a disturbance moving through the Windward Islands with gusts up to
40 mph already. Could become a tropical depression any moment and a
recon flight was to go in this afternoon. The future track of that
system should be westward through the Caribbean. There is also a
suspicious circulation over the Central Gulf, but no development so
far. A note from Bill Murray's daily feature, The Weather Notebook,
about Andrew making landfall near Homestead, Florida around daybreak
on this date in 1992. He was a Category 5. We all know the story of
what happened.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: An e-mail this afternoon from one of our
subscribers in Saranac Lake, New York tells of autumn foliage
beginning to show up in Upstate New York. Cheers. By 2 o'clock this
afternoon, the temperature had reached 102 in Dallas-Ft. Worth making
this the 17th consecutive day with temperatures 100 or hotter and 26
out of the last 27 days. It was 105 at Wichita Falls…a moderate risk
of severe weather this afternoon and evening over South Minnesota and
West Wisconsin. Severe thunderstorm watches were in effect from
Milwaukee and Bismarck…coldest this morning 31 at Stanley, Idaho and
Wainwright, Alaska.

Much drier air covers the northern half of Alabama this morning; dewpoints
have dropped into the 55 to 65 degree range which means lower humidity
values today, and little if any rain. Almost all of the afternoon showers
and storms should be over the southern half of the state, generally south of
U.S. 80.
The dry air will heat effectively; most places will see a high somewhere
between 90 and 95 degrees today. But the lower humidity will make the
afternoon heat a little more tolerable. Temperatures will fall quickly
tonight, and most places around here will enjoy a low in the 65 to 69 degree
range early tomorrow night. Some of the cooler valleys in northeast Alabama
might even be close to 60. Just a very small hint that the fall season isn't
all that far away. We will bring in the chance of widely scattered showers
and storms tomorrow afternoon as moisture begins to return, but once again
the most numerous ones will most likely be south of I-20.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: For now we expect a fairly typical summer weekend; humidity
levels will rise and a few spots could see a passing shower or storm both
Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Highs for the weekend should be mostly in the
low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Another front approaching Alabama from the north will bring an
enhanced chance of afternoon showers and storms by the first half of next
week. The latest model data suggests the front will hang up north of
Alabama, with little chance of cooler and drier air moving in here at
mid-week, a possibility that was on the table a few days ago.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Debby is on threat to land; it is moving northwest
across the eastern Atlantic, and should recurve to the north and then the
northeast well before getting close to the U.S. mainland. We are much more
interested in the strong tropical wave a little to the east of the Windward
Islands. That system has a chance to become tropical storm Ernesto over the
next few days as it moves into the Caribbean. Most of the computer models
have this disturbance near the southern coast of Cuba by Monday of next
week, and there is some chance it could enter the Gulf of Mexico. Looking at
the primary American global model, the GFS, if this does get into the Gulf
the greatest threat would be on the Texas or Louisiana coasts about one week
from now. But, that could change, so stay tuned. I do think it has a
reasonable chance to achieve hurricane status if the dry air over the
Caribbean isn't too much of a factor. As always with tropical systems, we
will be waiting and watching from the weather office.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, CA with 121 degrees. Coldest spot early yesterday was Stanley, Idaho
with 27. Yesterday's high in Dallas/Fort Worth was 103; their 16th
consecutive day with triple digit heat. They have also reached 100 degrees
or greater on 25 of the last 26 days!

MOST THUNDERSTORMS SHIFT SOUTHWARD: A stalled or nearly stalled
front was an escapee across North-Central Alabama this afternoon. It
would take a good detective to find the location. We think the front
is near Birmingham, but a lowering of the dew points has not
progressed as well as we like. Translation to all of this: because of
the drier air over the north part of the state, low temperatures will
drop into the mid to upper 60s overnight. Up in the valleys of NE
Alabama, we may have some lows around 64. That sure will feel good
considering the summer that we have had.

Most of the north half of Alabama should stay dry, at least through
Thursday, but there will be some thunderstorms mostly south of the
Birmingham area. Our latest array of weather models are arguing among
themselves. One of our main ones wants to increase the moisture fairly
quickly. For that reason, we go from widely separated storms on Friday
to scattered ones mostly in the afternoon on Saturday. Sunday probably
brings our best chance.

Scattered thunderstorms were in progress this afternoon over about
the south half of the state. So far they have not been as numerous and
strong as yesterday. During the last week, many sections of Alabama
have received encouraging amounts of rain.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Debby was way far away in the Eastern
Atlantic some 500 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. All
indications are that she will move toward the NW into the open Middle
Atlantic. Of more interest to the USA, is a system less than 400 miles
east of the Windward Islands moving west at 20. Could be a tropical
depression in the next day or so and a flight will be made tomorrow.
In about 5 or 6 days, this new one could be in the Central Caribbean
and our interest will rise accordingly.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: 103 in Dallas-Ft. Worth yesterday as their long
hot summer continues, but 121 in Death Valley was the hottest in the
USA yesterday…cold spots this morning included 30 at Stanley, Idaho
and West Yellowstone, Montana…there is an interesting spot down in the
north tip of Chile that has a normal rainfall of less 1/10 of an inch
a year. They once went 14 years in a row without getting a drop of
rain. The name of the city is Arica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Would you believe I haven't had a
single playoff game with Little Miss Molly since night before last. I
can blame that on some good old fashioned thunder boomers which
probably sent numerous dogs to their hiding places yesterday afternoon
and last night. My little 9-pound pal spent at least 4 hours under the
bed. Due to my wife's injured wrist, she needed to sleep in the
recliner last night. Little Miss Molly slept on the foot rest with
her, but she sure seemed bumfuzzled about all the changes. The little
lady is a creature of habit if I have ever seen one. I like that and
life goes on.

...Drier Air Pushes Into North Alabama...

Drier air will flow into North Alabama today in the wake of a surface cold
front that is very close to I-20 this morning. The chance of rain is tiny
over the northern third of the state in the dry air, and any showers in the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden area today should be isolated.
The best chance of getting wet this afternoon will come over the southern
counties of Alabama.

By tomorrow, the front should be fairly ill-defined, but close to U.S. 80,
or along a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika. This should keep
the northern counties dry, and the chance of rain around here remains quite
small on Friday and Saturday as well. But, by Sunday, moisture levels will
begin to increase, and we expect a much better chance of afternoon showers
and storms early next week as another front approaches from the north. Those
fronts will become more frequent visitors as we get into September, and the
primary belt of westerly winds over North America drops to the south.

TROPICS: Tropical depression four is forecast to become tropical storm Debby
today in the far eastern Atlantic. The system is about 250 miles west of the
Cape Verde islands, and a general northwest motion is expected through the
rest of the week. By the weekend, the system should be east of Bermuda, and
in that region of the Atlantic most tropical cyclones turn north, and then
northeast into the westerly winds aloft over that part of the globe. For now
it doesn't look like a threat to the U.S. Atlantic coast.A well organized
tropical wave is about 750 miles east of the Windward Islands in the
Atlantic, and might become a tropical depression today. This system should
move on into the Caribbean by the weekend. There is a chance this one might
get into the Gulf of Mexico early next week, so we will watch it closely.

MORE BIG SUMMER SOAKERS: Showers and storms produced heavy amounts of rain
in scattered sections of Alabama yesterday. Some totals included 1.83" at
Gulf Shores, 1.66" at Trussville, 1.42" at Blount Springs, 1.30" at Oneonta,
1.08" at Inverness (the two day total at our SKYCAM site in Inverness, at
the Wingate Inn on U.S. 280, is a whopping 3.57"!), .84" at Vincent, .83" at
Demopolis, .77" in downtown Birmingham on 20th Street at the Daniel
Building, and .70" at Black Creek, just northeast of Gadsden in Etowah
County. We measured only 0.12" at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in
Riverchase.

CHEWING THE RAG: Some big rain yesterday for the parched Rio Grande Valley
of Texas; Brownsville reported 1.04". The weather sure feels like fall up
north near the Canada border; the low yesterday morning in the community of
Embarrass, Minnesota was a frosty 33 degrees. In Duluth, MN the high was 76
after a morning low of 49. A 17 year old boy was killed due to flash
flooding near Amarillo, TX Monday evening. He was sucked into a drainage
tunnel at a park in the community of Potter.

RAIN CHANCES DECREASING AFTER TODAY: There were more scattered
thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon. They were not as numerous
and vicious as yesterday's storms, however, a few of them were
shooting lightning strokes like a machine gun and producing locally
heavy rain, especially in the central part of the state.

Drier air continues to wiggle its way into the state from the north.
We are expecting the dew point in Central Alabama to be between 66 and
68 all day tomorrow. Translation—you will be able to feel that the
humidity is down somewhat. Lately, with all of our 95-degree plus
heat, the dew point has been between 70 and 75 and that is just like
being in a sauna bath.

The drier air also means that our showers and thunderstorms will thin
out greatly starting tomorrow. We expect only a slight chance of a
thunderstorm each day from Wednesday through Friday. They may increase
a little on Saturday to about a 1 in 3 chance. This does not apply to
the entire state. Down near the coast, including the Mobile-Gulf
Shores area, there will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
almost every day with high temperatures between 90 and 92.

THE TROPICAL SITUATION: Overall, that big bowl of water known as the
Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and our beloved Gulf of Mexico is
quiet. There is one major exception. Tropical depression #4 was way
out in the Eastern Atlantic 140 miles SW of the southernmost Cape
Verde Islands. It was near tropical storm strength. When it increases
just a bit more it will be known as Tropical Storm Debby. A tropical
wave was 1,000 miles east of the Southern Windward Islands. This may
develop slowly also. Would you believe that last year at this time we
had already had 10 named storms.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Good old Embarrass, Minnesota. It is way up
there in the Minnesota North Woods, which I want to visit one day.
They had a low of 33 this morning which is a sign of the season. That
community can drop as low as 60 below occasionally in the winter. The
name of the town does not mean they are embarrassed by the
weather…across the other end of the thermometer, it got up to 119
yesterday in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: James Spann spent several hours in my
tiny corner today doing computer troubleshooting. He needs to start a
sideline business with that—as if he has time. There are growing
indications that the good Lord designated me as a person who should
not own a computer…you should have seen Little Miss Molly when James
rang the doorbell. Maybe she recognized him from TV, but she almost
took him down…we had to chase her all over the house to catch her and
keep her from being an outright nuisance. But James love Molly too, so
life goes on. Little Miss Molly will be four years old in a few days…I
plan to have at least seven ballgames with her that day!

...Wetter Weather Ahead...

We will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today
thanks to a weak front pushing into North Alabama. The air should be a
little more stable today thanks to warmer air aloft, so we don't expect the
storms to be as strong or as widespread as what we saw yesterday. And, as
drier air pushes into North Alabama the most numerous showers and storms
should be sound south of I-20 by afternoon. That dry air will continue to
settle southward, and most of North Alabama should be rain-free tomorrow and
Thursday, with almost all of the scattered showers and storms over the
southern counties of Alabama.

By Friday, we will bring back a chance of widely scattered afternoon storms,
and by the time the weekend arrives we should be back into our normal summer
pattern with morning sun, and some risk of a passing afternoon shower or
thunderstorm in scattered spots. High temperatures will remain generally
between 90 and 95 degrees for the next five days, although some communities
over the northern part of the state might fail to reach 90 today (it all
depends on the clouds and shower locations).

BENEFICIAL RAIN: Once again, some very generous rainfall amounts across
Alabama yesterday. Some totals included 2.62" at Helena (our weather watcher
Nathan Jones reports it was "one of the strongest storms in years with some
minor flooding"), 2.47" at our SKYCAM site atop the Wingate Inn, on U.S. 280
in the Inverness area, 2.15" at Manchester (Walker County), 1.56" at Black
Creek (northeast of Gadsden in Etowah County), 1.33" at Pell City, 1.31" at
Alabaster, 1.17" at Jemison, 1.16" at Hollins (Clay County), 1.14" at Alpine
(Talladega County), and 0.96" at the ABC 33/40 Studio in Riverchase (near
the intersection of Riverchase Parkway and Valleydale Road). Our SKYCAM site
in downtown Birmingham, atop the Daniel Building on 20th Street, measured
only 0.09".

A flash flood warning was required for Shelby County, some roads were
impassable in the Alabaster/Helena areas between 4:30 and 5:30, while folks
were trying to drive home.

TROPICS: The fourth tropical depression of the season formed late yesterday
in the far eastern Atlantic, about 200 miles south of the Cape Verde
Islands.

The system should become tropical storm Debby today, and is forecast to move
to the northwest over the next five days, winding up at a position about
halfway between the coast of Africa and Bermuda by the weekend. On that
track, the system should turn north, and then northeast in the open Atlantic
Ocean far from any major land area.

Elsewhere, there are no other organized tropical waves of note across the
Atlantic basin.

ROAMING: Mobile received a welcomed 1.62" of rain yesterday, but they still
have a rainfall deficiency of about 19 inches for the year so far. National
hot spot yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 119 degrees.

If You're Searching for Answers, Here are the Questions!"

Pastor Kip Laxson at First United Methodist Church of Alabaster helps tackle
difficult life--questions that Christians struggle with in his series "If
You're Searching for Answers, Here are the Questions!"
during August and September. Here is the schedule for the series:

August 13- If God is Love, why is there so much evil in the world?
August 20- Do miracles really happen in today's world?
August 27- How can I overcome my problems?
September 3- Aren't all religions basically the same?
September 10- I've heard that the Bible is filled with contradictions. Is
that true?
September 17- Are we really living in the "Last Days?"
September 24- Why does God need my resources to build His kingdom?

Alabaster First United Methodist Church offers a contemporary service on
Sundays at 8:30 AM and a traditional service at 11:00 AM. Sunday school is
at 9:45. The church is located at 10903 Highway 119 in Alabaster. For more

NOT AS HOT FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS: Thanks to another frontal
boundary, our thermometer should relax a little over the next few days
and not make us quite as uncomfortable. There is no real cool air
involved with this front, so our more reasonable temperatures will be
due mainly to more clouds and showers. The air behind that boundary is
drier, so we look for low temperatures by Thursday morning to be in
the upper 60s. See our day-by-day forecast and you will notice highs
mostly between 89 and 92 for the remainder of this week.

THE THUNDERSTORM SITUATION: Scattered ones were developing this
afternoon. The condition of the atmosphere is favorable for some of
those to produce strong winds and locally heavy rain. The lightning,
like recent days, will be ferocious. With all the trees completely in
leaf, it does not take a real strong wind to uproot a few trees or
break off some limbs. It will not be unusual for some of the stronger
storms for the remainder of this afternoon and this evening to produce
localized gusts to 50 mph.

THE TROPICS: That is a good looking tropical wave way out in the
Eastern Atlantic SE of the Cape Verde Islands. It is well organized
and a tropical depression could form in the next day or so. It was
moving WNW at 15. It is likely that it will move to the NW into the
open Atlantic and probably not bother the USA. Of course, that is not
sealed in stone.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: You could find almost any temperature you want
in the world today with highs between 115 and 120 in Iraq. Down near
the South Pole, it was 103 below zero at Vostok…we have noticed a
slight cool down in North and Central Canada during the last several
days. This morning it was 28 and snowing at Alert in extreme Northern
Canada…coldest temperatures in the USA this morning included 33 at
Stanley, Idaho and 28 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska…Texas maintains their
long string of 100 plus heat. It was 104 Sunday in Paris and Wichita
Falls and 102 in Dallas-Ft. Worth…a few cities that got over an inch
of rain in the last 24 hours included Miami, Chattanooga, Atlanta and
Amarillo.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I know I keep saying this, but I
believe the ballgame I had with Little Miss Molly last night was the
most vigorous fast-moving game ever. I did not think it would ever
end. It involved about 7 different balls and throwing them and kicking
them all over our large living area. I was pooped and had to take a
rest. Would you believe that Little Miss Molly still had not had
enough and she had another big game by herself real late last night.
When she finally got tired, she curled up on my ex-National Geographic
blanket and went to sleep. Then we put her to bed. Life goes on and I
sure am tired.
