...Drier Air Pushes Into North Alabama...
Drier air will flow into North Alabama today in the wake of a surface cold
front that is very close to I-20 this morning. The chance of rain is tiny
over the northern third of the state in the dry air, and any showers in the
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden area today should be isolated.
The best chance of getting wet this afternoon will come over the southern
counties of Alabama.
By tomorrow, the front should be fairly ill-defined, but close to U.S. 80,
or along a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika. This should keep
the northern counties dry, and the chance of rain around here remains quite
small on Friday and Saturday as well. But, by Sunday, moisture levels will
begin to increase, and we expect a much better chance of afternoon showers
and storms early next week as another front approaches from the north. Those
fronts will become more frequent visitors as we get into September, and the
primary belt of westerly winds over North America drops to the south.
TROPICS: Tropical depression four is forecast to become tropical storm Debby
today in the far eastern Atlantic. The system is about 250 miles west of the
Cape Verde islands, and a general northwest motion is expected through the
rest of the week. By the weekend, the system should be east of Bermuda, and
in that region of the Atlantic most tropical cyclones turn north, and then
northeast into the westerly winds aloft over that part of the globe. For now
it doesn't look like a threat to the U.S. Atlantic coast.A well organized
tropical wave is about 750 miles east of the Windward Islands in the
Atlantic, and might become a tropical depression today. This system should
move on into the Caribbean by the weekend. There is a chance this one might
get into the Gulf of Mexico early next week, so we will watch it closely.
MORE BIG SUMMER SOAKERS: Showers and storms produced heavy amounts of rain
in scattered sections of Alabama yesterday. Some totals included 1.83" at
Gulf Shores, 1.66" at Trussville, 1.42" at Blount Springs, 1.30" at Oneonta,
1.08" at Inverness (the two day total at our SKYCAM site in Inverness, at
the Wingate Inn on U.S. 280, is a whopping 3.57"!), .84" at Vincent, .83" at
Demopolis, .77" in downtown Birmingham on 20th Street at the Daniel
Building, and .70" at Black Creek, just northeast of Gadsden in Etowah
County. We measured only 0.12" at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in
Riverchase.
CHEWING THE RAG: Some big rain yesterday for the parched Rio Grande Valley
of Texas; Brownsville reported 1.04". The weather sure feels like fall up
north near the Canada border; the low yesterday morning in the community of
Embarrass, Minnesota was a frosty 33 degrees. In Duluth, MN the high was 76
after a morning low of 49. A 17 year old boy was killed due to flash
flooding near Amarillo, TX Monday evening. He was sucked into a drainage
tunnel at a park in the community of Potter.
