Much drier air covers the northern half of Alabama this morning; dewpoints
have dropped into the 55 to 65 degree range which means lower humidity
values today, and little if any rain. Almost all of the afternoon showers
and storms should be over the southern half of the state, generally south of
U.S. 80.
The dry air will heat effectively; most places will see a high somewhere
between 90 and 95 degrees today. But the lower humidity will make the
afternoon heat a little more tolerable. Temperatures will fall quickly
tonight, and most places around here will enjoy a low in the 65 to 69 degree
range early tomorrow night. Some of the cooler valleys in northeast Alabama
might even be close to 60. Just a very small hint that the fall season isn't
all that far away. We will bring in the chance of widely scattered showers
and storms tomorrow afternoon as moisture begins to return, but once again
the most numerous ones will most likely be south of I-20.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: For now we expect a fairly typical summer weekend; humidity
levels will rise and a few spots could see a passing shower or storm both
Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Highs for the weekend should be mostly in the
low 90s.
NEXT WEEK: Another front approaching Alabama from the north will bring an
enhanced chance of afternoon showers and storms by the first half of next
week. The latest model data suggests the front will hang up north of
Alabama, with little chance of cooler and drier air moving in here at
mid-week, a possibility that was on the table a few days ago.
TROPICS: Tropical storm Debby is on threat to land; it is moving northwest
across the eastern Atlantic, and should recurve to the north and then the
northeast well before getting close to the U.S. mainland. We are much more
interested in the strong tropical wave a little to the east of the Windward
Islands. That system has a chance to become tropical storm Ernesto over the
next few days as it moves into the Caribbean. Most of the computer models
have this disturbance near the southern coast of Cuba by Monday of next
week, and there is some chance it could enter the Gulf of Mexico. Looking at
the primary American global model, the GFS, if this does get into the Gulf
the greatest threat would be on the Texas or Louisiana coasts about one week
from now. But, that could change, so stay tuned. I do think it has a
reasonable chance to achieve hurricane status if the dry air over the
Caribbean isn't too much of a factor. As always with tropical systems, we
will be waiting and watching from the weather office.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, CA with 121 degrees. Coldest spot early yesterday was Stanley, Idaho
with 27. Yesterday's high in Dallas/Fort Worth was 103; their 16th
consecutive day with triple digit heat. They have also reached 100 degrees
or greater on 25 of the last 26 days!
