...Wetter Weather Ahead...

We will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today
thanks to a weak front pushing into North Alabama. The air should be a
little more stable today thanks to warmer air aloft, so we don't expect the
storms to be as strong or as widespread as what we saw yesterday. And, as
drier air pushes into North Alabama the most numerous showers and storms
should be sound south of I-20 by afternoon. That dry air will continue to
settle southward, and most of North Alabama should be rain-free tomorrow and
Thursday, with almost all of the scattered showers and storms over the
southern counties of Alabama.

By Friday, we will bring back a chance of widely scattered afternoon storms,
and by the time the weekend arrives we should be back into our normal summer
pattern with morning sun, and some risk of a passing afternoon shower or
thunderstorm in scattered spots. High temperatures will remain generally
between 90 and 95 degrees for the next five days, although some communities
over the northern part of the state might fail to reach 90 today (it all
depends on the clouds and shower locations).

BENEFICIAL RAIN: Once again, some very generous rainfall amounts across
Alabama yesterday. Some totals included 2.62" at Helena (our weather watcher
Nathan Jones reports it was "one of the strongest storms in years with some
minor flooding"), 2.47" at our SKYCAM site atop the Wingate Inn, on U.S. 280
in the Inverness area, 2.15" at Manchester (Walker County), 1.56" at Black
Creek (northeast of Gadsden in Etowah County), 1.33" at Pell City, 1.31" at
Alabaster, 1.17" at Jemison, 1.16" at Hollins (Clay County), 1.14" at Alpine
(Talladega County), and 0.96" at the ABC 33/40 Studio in Riverchase (near
the intersection of Riverchase Parkway and Valleydale Road). Our SKYCAM site
in downtown Birmingham, atop the Daniel Building on 20th Street, measured
only 0.09".

A flash flood warning was required for Shelby County, some roads were
impassable in the Alabaster/Helena areas between 4:30 and 5:30, while folks
were trying to drive home.

TROPICS: The fourth tropical depression of the season formed late yesterday
in the far eastern Atlantic, about 200 miles south of the Cape Verde
Islands.

The system should become tropical storm Debby today, and is forecast to move
to the northwest over the next five days, winding up at a position about
halfway between the coast of Africa and Bermuda by the weekend. On that
track, the system should turn north, and then northeast in the open Atlantic
Ocean far from any major land area.

Elsewhere, there are no other organized tropical waves of note across the
Atlantic basin.

ROAMING: Mobile received a welcomed 1.62" of rain yesterday, but they still
have a rainfall deficiency of about 19 inches for the year so far. National
hot spot yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 119 degrees.
