ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday August 22, 2009
===================================================================
Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is a new sermon series beginning on Sunday,
August 16 at Hunter Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't
have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org or call 205.985.7295.

...Ahhhh...

One of my friend's Facebook pages summed it up nicely this morning:
Wow what a beautiful day. I'm sitting on the back porch drinking my
tea and loving it. Temp is pleasant and the 98% humidity is gone.
Feels like fall.

LOWER HUMIDITIES, RELATIVELY COOL TEMPS: The difference that you
felt this morning was in lower dewpoints. They were in the
lower 60s at daybreak across Central Alabama and they have continued
to fall through the day, dropping into the upper 50s. This drier air
will allow the mercury to fall to near 60F on average, with a few
lucky spots in the 50s. Tomorrow will look a lot like today with
plentiful sunshine, a light north wind and unseasonably low humidity.
Highs on Sunday will top out about 84F on average.

MONDAY AND TUESDAY: The deep upper trough will continue over the
eastern United States through Monday and Tuesday, keeping us
relatively dry and cool. By late Tuesday, the trough will lift out to
the northeast and a low level southeasterly flow will begin to
increase moisture across the area. We will see isolated showers and
thunderstorms return to the forecast by Wednesday. A passing tropical
wave will increase showers and storms across the area on Thursday. By
Friday, an approaching frontal system will trigger additional showers
and storms. Those rain chances may remain high through the weekend
and perhaps even into the start of the following work week if the
front stalls over the area.

BILL: Tropical Storm warnings are in effect for parts of
Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. A hurricane
watch is in effect for parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
My namesake hurricane is 400 miles south southeast of Cape Cod, moving
north at 23 mph with top winds of 100 mph. It will pass 200 miles
east of Cape Cod and just east of Nova Scotia tomorrow.

WEATHERBRAINS: Things are heating up as we head into the fall season
for WeatherBrains, the netcast that is all about weather. This week,
scientist Ivor van Heerden will talk about what went wrong in Katrina
and what the future holds for New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana.
The show will be available by late Monday at night at www.WeatherBrains.com
or on iTunes. Follow our tweets for WeatherBrains on Twitter
@weatherbrains.

ANDREW: On Saturday morning, August 23, 1992, forecasters at the
National Hurricane Center were alarmed to see that Hurricane Andrew is
strengthening and moving faster toward the Bahamas and South Florida.
Andrew was located ,800 miles east of Miami, moving west showed the
storm at 12 mph. The Aviation model was the odd-man-out on that
bright sunny morning in Miami, showing the storm moving faster toward
South Florida, arriving early Monday morning. By evening, the
official forecast shows Andrew making landfall on the South Florida
coast about midday on Monday and a Hurricane Watch is issued along the
East Coast of Florida from Titusville to Key West. This would give
emergency management officials and the public about 30 hours lead time
before the actual landfall early Monday
morning

...Beautiful Weekend In Store...

A cold front moved into Alabama overnight, preceded by showers and
thunderstorms. A few warnings, including flash flood warnings were
required. The front will allow cooler and drier air to flow into
Alabama today, and you will notice the difference.

YOUR FORECAST: Clouds will be moving out this morning and humidity
levels will be dropping. Lows tonight and tomorrow night will drop to
near 60 on average, meaning that a few lucky spots will see lows in
the 50s. It looks like we stay bone dry through Tuesday as high
pressure dominates our weather. We could see a few afternoon showers
or thundershowers by Wednesday and Thursday over eastern sections as
moisture begins to increase again.

HURRICANE BILL: Hurricane Bill is passing about 225 miles northwest
of Bermuda this morning. At its closest approach, the hurricane
moved within 150 miles of the island. Tropical storm force winds and
heavy rains were experienced there. Bill weakened a bit on Friday,
but could make a bit of a comeback today. The hurricane will stay
well east of the U.S. East Coast, but Bill will likely still be a
hurricane on

Sunday as it passes just east of the Canadian Maritimes. Some 18-23
foot waves will be observed on Cape Cod on Sunday. Gale force winds
will be felt on Nova Scotia, and strong tropical storm force winds may
be felt on Cape Breton Island. It should weaken to tropical storm
force as it brushes eastern Newfoundland early Monday morning.

REST OF THE TROPICS: The disturbance in the eastern Atlantic will
turn northwestward around the Bermuda high, passing north of the
islands, perhaps developing into a tropical cyclone by midweek. Look
for an Atlantic storm around Labor Day.

STOKIN' THE FIRE: Two days of world-class barbeque competition is set
to fire up August 21-22 at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.
Sanctioned by the prestigious Kansas City Barbeque Society, "Stokin'
the Fire" is a fundraiser of the top-notch sort for the historic
landmark. The event is expected to draw more than 80 competitors,
along with music by Cowboy Mouth and Shemekia Copeland and, for the
first year, an iron pour by Sloss metal artists. www.slossfurnaces.com

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 186: It was a commemoration of the 40th
anniversary of Hurricane Camille last Monday night on WeatherBrains,
the netcast that's all about the weather. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
to listen, or subscribe at iTunes. Follow the show on Twitter
@WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Birmingham's high of 104F was a record for the
date, and the thirteenth day of triple digit heatin the Magic City.
The 13 days of 100 degree plus temperatures established a new record
for any month in Birmingham. The previous mark was 12 set in 1925.
Montgomery tied its record streak at fourteen days. It was 107F in
Pinson and 108F in Mumford. The 104F at Atlanta was within one degree
of their all time high and set a new record for August. Follow my
daily weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Cool Front Edging Closer...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of great expectations if you like a
touch of autumn before autumn gets here. Over the weekend, we expect
the dew point to be down in the lower 60s and even the 50s, whereas
normally at this time in August it would likely be in the 70s.
Translation: a noticeable drop in humidity that you will feel
immediately when you go outside.

But I am getting the wagon ahead of the mule. We still have some
scattered thunderstorms to deal with until that cool front sneaks in
from the NW. Some scattered ones were developing across Central
Alabama this afternoon and moving generally toward the east. We do not
expect a state wide siege of thunderstorms and flooding rain like we
had yesterday afternoon and last night. In fact, most of the scattered
storms this evening will be diminishing or moving south of our area by
midnight or later.

NOW FOR THE GOOD PART: An extended period of dry weather, which we
believe will last at least through next Tuesday, starting on Tuesday
SE winds will be transporting more moist air northward form the Gulf
of Mexico. Look for at least some widely scattered storms Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday of next week.

This weekend should be one of mostly sunshine, low humidity and cool
nights. Even with high temperatures in the mid 80s, it will feel
pleasant. Our cooler temperatures will come Sunday and Monday morning
with lows close to 60. In fact, we have posted 59 for the low on
Monday morning. This means that the traditionally cooler spots could
be as low as 55 or so.

THE BUCKETS OF RAIN: Sure seems like the rain was being poured from a
bucket yesterday afternoon and evening. We have posted a long list of
amounts on the 33/40 Weather BLOG. We list only a short sample of the
heavier amounts here:

2.38 Coker
2.72 Oliver Dam at Tuscaloosa
1.21 Birmingham Airport
3.50 Eight miles SW of Cullman
1.80 Rosa (Blount County)

LATEST ON BIG BAD WILD BILL: A Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane
Watch have been issued for Bermuda and everyone along the coast of New
England and in the Canadian Maritime should keep your guard up. Early
this afternoon Bill was located 290 miles SSW of Bermuda moving NW at
18. He should turn a little bit more toward the north. Sustained winds
have decreased to near 110 mph, but he may grow stronger again. There
is another new disturbed weather area called a tropical wave way out
in the East Atlantic. No immediate signs of success for that one.

RANDOM NOTES: Amazing at the number of severe weather events in the
northeast this year. Several Tornado Warnings in New York State this
afternoon and numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. There was even a
tornado fatality in Ontario yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure have been good to Little Miss
Molly since yesterday. Late last night I have never seen her chase a
ball so rapidly across our large living area. Surely she was doing
over 30 mph and I often worry that she will collide with the front
door and hurt herself. She sure was ready for bed late last night and
was sound asleep within 45 seconds. Every time I have passed through
the living area today to get coffee, I have paused and given her a
rubdown—at least 5 of them. Life goes on. JBE

...Drier Air Rolls In Later Today...

REFRESHING WEEKEND AHEAD: A cold front will pass through Alabama
today, and accordingly we will maintain the chance of a few showers
and thunderstorms, especially this morning. Additional rain amounts of
around 1/4 inch are expected before dry air begins to arrive this
afternoon, shutting down the rain for perhaps an extended period of
time. The sky will become mostly clear tonight, and we are still
promising a really nice late summer weekend, with sunny days, clear
nights, low humidity, and cool mornings (for August). Highs will be
generally in the mid 80s, and most communities will be close to 60
degrees at daybreak Sunday. The cooler spots will wind up in the 50s
giving the state a very nice preview of fall. Dry air will stay in
place through the first half of next week with only a slow increase in
heat and humidity levels across the Deep South.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely on the Gulf Coast today in
the area from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with potential for heavy
amounts of rain. Then, just a slight risk of a shower tomorrow,
followed by mostly sunny weather Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Highs
will be in the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water temperature last
night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 86 degrees.

WILD WILLIAM: Big bad hurricane Bill continues on the forecast track;
sustained winds are 125 mph, making it a category three hurricane.
Bill will move north-northwest over the weekend in the area between
the East Coast of the U.S. and the island of Bermuda. Bill is a large
storm, with hurricane force winds extending out 115 miles from the
center. Due to this large wind envelope, a hurricane watch is in
effect for the island of Bermuda. Bill will begin to weaken late in
the weekend as it encounters colder water, and it will be close to the
Canadian Maritimes Sunday night. From there the system will becoming
an extra-tropical storm over the North Atlantic as it accelerates to
the northeast. Elsewhere, the tropics are quiet.

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: Slow moving tropical thunderstorms prompted flash
flood warnings for a number of Alabama counties late yesterday. Some
rain totals included 2.33" at Coker (just west of Tuscaloosa and
Northport), 2.00" at Bluff Park, 1.85" at Gardendale, 1.74" at the
Tuscaloosa Airport, 1.71" at Bear Creek, 1.40" at Fayette, 1.36" at
Trussville, 1.05" at Palmerdale, 1.02" at Jasper, .99" at Homewood,
and .84" at Bessemer.

CANADIAN TORNADOES: Violent storms carrying possible tornados tore
across parts of Ontario yesterday, killing one person. There were also
reports of injuries after a possible tornado touchdown near Newmarket,
north of Toronto. The city of Toronto was actually under a tornado
warning for a brief time, but no damage was reported in the city.

...Time For A Change...

A VERY PLEASANT WEEKEND: It is time for a change in the weather.
Tropical Storm Claudette left a sea of humidity across Alabama and now
we are depending on a cool front to rescue us from all that
perspiration (sometimes called sweat).
That cool front was pushing down through Oklahoma and Missouri this
afternoon. The timeline for it to reach Alabama is tomorrow morning in
the NW corner of the state and down into Central Alabama by nightfall
Friday and eventually to near Mobile by Saturday morning. It will
remain stalled just off shore from Sunday through Tuesday and then
warm, moist air will be aggravating us again.

As the cool front pushes further into the deep moisture over the SE,
scattered showers and thunderstorms will be increasing for the
remainder of this afternoon and tonight over most of Alabama. Do not
be surprised to see an isolated severe thunderstorm warning and
possibly even a flash flood warning. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center,
in their latest discussion, has extended the slight risk area
southward a bit to include extreme NW Alabama. It also includes the
north half of Mississippi and much of Middle Tennessee. For tomorrow,
most of the thunderstorms in Central Alabama will be during the
morning and decreasing during the afternoon. It will be turning cooler
Friday night.

THAT GREAT WEEKEND: We have been bragging about that all week and it
looks more and more like it will come to pass. We look for mostly
sunshine Saturday and Sunday with a distinct drop in the humidity,
cooler nights and pleasant afternoons. Low dew point should be down in
the low 60s all day Saturday and Sunday. Our coolest temperature will
be Sunday and Monday morning when it gets very close to 60. This will
mean for sure that there will be some 50s in the NE Alabama valleys.

AT THE BEACH: Even Gulf Shores and Orange Beach will get a slight
break from wet humid weather. They will have numerous showers and
storms through Friday, but becoming mostly sunny most of Saturday and
all day Sunday. Some early morning lows in the low 60s.

HURRICANE WILD BILL: I added the word wild, of course, and Bill is a
mean one—a major hurricane. He is the only one on the stage and taking
all the attention, but he deserved it. At 2:00 this afternoon, Bill
was sporting sustained winds of 120 mph, which is a Category 3. He was
moving NW at 18 mph. He may grow into a Category 4 again. A Hurricane
Watch is posted for Bermuda even though he is expected to pass west of
there. By Sunday morning, the center will be close enough to Cape Cod
to create some big waves. The NHC track forecast still keeps the
center away from the USA coastline, but maybe not for the Canadian
Maritime. Finally by Tuesday, he will be halfway across the colder
waters of the North Atlantic.

GLOBAL ROAMING: In incomplete sentences to save space. Barrow, on the
north coast of Alaska, still has 18 hours of daylight, but losing 12
minutes today. All the way down to the other end of the globe, Vostok,
Antarctica 107 below zero. 119 Death Valley, hottest yesterday. 27
McKinley Park, Alaska the coldest with 35 in Yellowstone National
Park. 18 tornadoes yesterday in Illinois, Iowa, South Minnesota. NYC 4
days in a row with 90 or above. They went most of the summer without 90.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I happened to mention yesterday that
Little Miss Molly was trying to eat grass. I had forgotten that meant
possible stomach ache, but I got 15 e-mails all explaining that was
the reason. Next time I get a stomach ache, extremely rare, I am going
to get down on all fours and graze along with Molly. I can just see
the look on her face. Molly snapped back real fast yesterday and
reclaimed the treat that she had hidden under my pillow. Life goes on.

...Beautiful Weekend Ahead...

WET AT TIMES THROUGH TOMORROW: Pure tropical air continues to cover
Alabama, meaning a shower or storm is possible at just about any hour
of the day or night through tomorrow. The most numerous showers and
storms should come during the afternoon and evening hours, and like
recent days the stronger storms will produce torrential rain in this
moisture laden air. We will be watching for the potential for strong
storms tomorrow afternoon as a cold front approaches from the north;
widespread severe weather is not expected, but a few storms could
produce strong winds. That front should over South Alabama by midnight
tomorrow night, and noticeably drier air will follow the front,
setting the stage for a fantastic weekend.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: The dry, continental air will be sunny days,
clear nights, low humidity levels, and pleasantly cool mornings for
August. We will be down in the low 60s early Sunday, and the cooler
spots across the northern half of the state will reach the 50s, a very
nice preview of the fall season. Afternoon highs this weekend will be
in the 86 to 89 degree range, and for now it looks like the dry air
will stay in place through Tuesday of next week.

WILD BILL: Hurricane Bill is now a category four hurricane, packing
sustained winds of 135 mph about 900 miles south of the island of
Bermuda. We can be very thankful that Bill's projected track keeps it
away from any land mass during the next few days; it will move
northward, between the East Coast of the U.S. and Bermuda, over the
weekend, perhaps reaching the Canadian Maritimes by Monday around Nova
Scotia. But, by then, it should be weakening rapidly over the cooler
water of the North Atlantic. Huge swells are likely along the upper
half of the U.S. Atlantic coast this weekend from North Carolina to
Maine.

Elsewhere in the tropics, no sign of Ana regenerating again, and the
rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet. Hurricane season runs through the
last day of November, but the peak of the season tends to be from now
until the first two weeks of October.

AT THE BEACH: About 3 to 5 hours of sunshine each day through Saturday
with scattered showers and thunderstorms; dry air takes over by
Sunday, with a mostly sunny sky by then. Highs along the immediate
coast will remain in the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 85 degrees.

MINNEAPOLIS TORNADO: Large trees and power lines were toppled and
cars, a church and other buildings were damaged in the southern part
of the city of Minneapolis yesterday, but no injuries have been
reported. Another tornado touched down in North Branch, Minnesota,
causing extensive damage to the city's middle school. A total of 68
tornado warnings were issued yesterday and last night for parts of the
Midwest.

===================================================================

..Nice Weekend Ahead...

THANK YOU CLAUDETTE: Well, it is a belated thanks because, at first,
it appeared that she did not care about us and would skip giving us a
good wetting down.

But she finally did do us a favor. She left behind a deep reservoir of
tropical moisture and left it up to daytime heating to make good use
of it. We saw some of the benefit late yesterday when a group of
strong storms developed south of Birmingham and moved toward the
northeast. The storms became bullies, and with a great dead of noise,
dumped very quickly these rain amounts:

1.34 Meadow Brook
2.17 Greystone Cove
1.84 Alabaster
3.31 Eagle Point1.84 Argo
1.64 Moody with one inch in 20 minutes
2.03 Inverness

WHAT ELSE CAN SHE DO? She has brought in plenty of deep tropical
moisture. Morning upper air soundings showed that the moist air was
widespread and deep. We should continue to have a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms again tomorrow and Friday. They may become
numerous at times tomorrow.

A NICE CHANGE FOR THE WEEKEND: Some of those thunderstorms may become
strong on Friday. Do not be surprised to see a few isolated severe
thunderstorm warnings. Meanwhile, the cool front will reach NW Alabama
later in the day Friday. It should put a stop to our thunderstorms
here in Central Alabama Friday evening or Friday night. The weekend
looks very pleasant. Latest projections are that the front will be
down in South Alabama by Saturday morning and stall just off shore
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. This will put us in a dry air mass, which
cools better at night. We believe that Sunday morning will be our
coolest with an average low of 62 across the I-20 corridor. You can
almost be assured that some of the traditional cooler spots in NE
Alabama will have some upper 50s. We will be all smiles.

SOUTH TEXAS: I really feel for all those millions of folks suffering
through a long drought and heat wave. Yesterday was the 18th day in a
row with temperatures 100 or hotter at Austin and Del Rio. San Antonio
had 12 days in a row with 100 or hotter. From early May until
yesterday, there were 59 days with 100 or hotter at Austin, 55 days at
Del Rio and 51 at San Antonio. That hurts. It has not always been that
way. In the 1970s, San Antonio did not have a single 100-degree
temperature for 5 years in a row.

TROPICAL: The big story now is powerful Hurricane Bill. He has grown
to a category 4, which makes him super powerful and super dangerous.
The latest advisory shows that Bill has sustained winds of 135 mph and
moving WNW at 18 mph. The National Hurricane Center continues to
forecast a turn more northward passing west of Bermuda Saturday
morning and then more north and NE into the North Atlantic. The
current projection is for no landfall in the USA.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly surprises me
sometimes. She has a mind of her own. During our walk this morning,
she did not want to do anything but eat grass. Of course, I did not
let her. When we got home for the ceremonial treat, she rejected it. I
followed her around and around the room with a treat in my hand. I
finally left it on the floor. A few minutes later, she picked it up
and went to our king-size bed and was hiding the treat under my
pillow. Is it possible that a little dog can sense that there has been
an economic downturn and tries to prepare for the future? Life goes on.

...Occasional Showers...

A BLANKET OF MOIST AIR: A pure tropical airmass remains across Alabama
and the Deep South today; air left behind from Tropical Storm
Claudette early this week. Accordingly, a shower or thunderstorm will
be possible at just about any time today and tomorrow, with a mostly
cloudy sky and a high in the mid to upper 80s. Like yesterday, the
stronger storms this afternoon will be capable of torrential rain and
some localized flooding.

On Friday, showers and storms should become even more numerous thanks
to an approaching surface front, supported by a strong upper trough
over the eastern third of the nation. A few strong storms are likely
on Friday, but a major severe weather program is not expected. We
figure average rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely across the
northern half of Alabama through Friday night, with pockets of heavier
rain likely. The rain will end Friday night.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND: A nice surge of dry air blows into our state
just in time for the weekend. We are projecting sunny days, clear
nights, low humidity, and relatively cool mornings for August. Highs
will be in the mid to upper 80s, with low 60s likely by daybreak
Sunday. Some of the cooler spots could wind up in the mid to upper
50s, a nice preview of fall.

BIG BAD BILL: Bill grew into a major hurricane last night, with
sustained winds of 125 mph. The big hurricane, which is about 500
miles east/northeast of the Leeward Islands, should begin to move on a
more northwesterly track during the next 48 hours, passing north of
the islands. Then, a turn more toward the north is likely by the
weekend, and we still believe Bill will remain well east of the
Atlantic coast of the U.S. It could be very close to Bermuda at some
point during the day; both the East Coast of the U.S. and Bermuda can
expect huge swells and very rough surf as Bill passes by. It could
reach category four strength, but it will begin to weaken late in the
weekend as it encounters the cooler water of the North Atlantic.

OTHER TROPICAL NOTES: The tropical wave, former Tropical Storm Ana,
will emerge into the Southeast Gulf of Mexico this morning. While some
regeneration is possible, one way or another it will spread deep
tropical moisture up the cold front that will move through the eastern
U.S. Friday and Saturday, perhaps enhancing rain totals along the
Atlantic coast. The front will be east and south of Alabama before
that added moisture can really get involved.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Chance of Getting Wet...

A PLEASANT WEEKEND AHEAD: Tropical Storm Claudette threw us a number
of curve balls. That is not unusual with a tropical storm. We had
planned for a significant wetting down of the state yesterday as her
remnants moved northward from the Gulf Coast. It did not happen. In
fact, instead of getting around 1 inch of rain, a mere 0.01 was the
total at Birmingham Airport and only 0.04 in Tuscaloosa. However, she
did do a favor for the rain wishers. She brought in an abundant layer
of tropical moisture that is still over the state today and will be
around for a time.

So what does this mean? It means a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms each day all the way through Friday. We think that
Friday will be the best day for showers and storms and a few of those
could be strong. Why Friday? It will be because of another approaching
front from the NW and with tropical moisture already here, it will
trigger some stronger storms with heavier amounts of rain.

THAT NICE WEEKEND: Do not be surprised to see some showers and storms
still in progress Saturday morning over the southern part of the
state, but across North Alabama (including the I-20 corridor) it
should be clearing and the mean old humidity beginning to fall. That
will be the lead in to a very nice weekend. By Sunday morning, the
cool front, if we can call it that, will be along the coast. Sunday
should feature mostly sunshine, lower humidity, with high temperatures
in the mid to upper 80s and lows in the 60s. It is possible that
Monday morning will see low temperatures in the low to mid 60s.

GOOD OLE WWL: 40 years ago tonight a catastrophe occurred along the
Central Gulf Coast as powerful Hurricane Camille went ashore. I was
working for the National Weather Service (or was it the U.S. Weather
Bureau at that time), but we were on vacation in Northern Utah. After
dark I drove my car out to a slightly elevated area in the Wasatch
Mountains near Hill Air Force Base and was able to tune in WWL in New
Orleans for hours. Absolutely awesome coverage and there I was wishing
I was back home and on duty. By the way, James Spann was listening to
the same broadcast at the same time from the home of his mother. We
had never heard of each other and now we work together. Life presents
some interesting situations. May I also invite you to listen to the
Weather Brains taping last night. We were able to re-enact a number of
the actual warnings as that major storm tore up the Gulf of
Mexico and landed on the Mississippi coast.

THE TROPICS NOW: Wild Bill (however, we will nickname him Wild Bill
Murray and Bill is turning out to be the champion tropical threat so
far this season. So much so that people along the Upper Atlantic Coast
may need to pay attention just in case the track slides more westward.
By Sunday morning, he is expected to be centered about 300 miles east
of the Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia area. Already Bill has
grown strong enough for sustained winds at 105 mph. He will get even
stronger as he curves northward and passes west of Bermuda.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After going 24 hours with only 1 or 2
hours of sleep, I slept like a baby last night and feel like I am 25
years old today. That will translate to a number of ball games later
today with my little pal. I took Molly out for a brief midnight walk
last night. She was so sound asleep that she yawned and stretched the
whole time she was out, but the very mention of the word treat brought
her to full attention immediately.

...Showery Weather Continues...

TROPICAL AIR: While Tropical Storm Claudette has dissipated, it leaves
a deep pool of moisture over Alabama, which means we will see more
clouds than sun today, along with scattered to numerous showers and
storms. Temperatures will remain below average, with highs mostly in
the mid to upper 80s. Expect similar weather tomorrow and Thursday,
with mixed sun and clouds and the daily chance of scattered showers
and thunderstorms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Late in the week, a strong upper trough will form
over the eastern third of the nation, driving a cold front down this
way. That front should bring an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms on Friday, followed by a refreshing change in the
weather for the weekend. We are forecasting sunny days and clear
nights over the weekend, with lower humidity levels and cooler nights.
Some of the cooler spots across North Alabama could reach the upper
50s at daybreak Sunday, a nice preview of the coming fall season. The
dry air should stay in place into the first half of next week.

TOPIC: TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ana dissipated late yesterday; the
system is now an open wave moving over the island of Hispaniola. That
wave will move toward the far southern Gulf of Mexico, but
regeneration for now doesn't look especially likely due to the
interaction with Cuba. The only active tropical cyclone now is
Hurricane Bill, which is forecast to become a major hurricane as it
passes north of the Leeward Islands today. A weakness will develop in
the upper ridge north of the system, and accordingly Bill will begin
to move more northward by the weekend; most dynamic computer models
recurve Bill into the open Atlantic well before reaching the East
Coast of the U.S. It would be very close to Bermuda Saturday before it
accelerates into the North Atlantic.

MONDAY'S RAIN: Rain amounts across Alabama yesterday were generally
lighter than forecast as the remnant low of Claudette slowly moved
through the southern and western counties of the state. One of the
heavier totals came from Brookley Field in Mobile with 1.21". Other
amounts included .78" at Evergreen, .58" at Auburn, .57" at Valley
Head, and .20" at the Birmingham Airport. Our Skywatchers at Jasper
and Ragland reported no rain at all yesterday.

ODDS AND ENDS: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley,
CA with 114 degrees. Coldest places were Big Piney and Cora, WY with a
frosty 27 degrees. Coldest place in Alaska was Nikolai with 30
degrees. The rain total yesterday at San Juan, Puerto Rico was 1.75",
thanks to Tropical Depression Ana. One of the heaviest rain totals in
the nation yesterday was not associated with any tropical system; it
came at Kansas City where they were drenched with 3.38".

..Claudette On The Way Out...

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HANG AROUND: I suppose there are no two
tropical systems exactly alike. We can say that every individual named
storm has a mind of its own. Claudette, for example, was a puzzle at
times. After she got over the NE Gulf of Mexico, it became a challenge
to forecast her landfall point and she took her own good time. She
made landfall late last night in the vicinity of Ft. Walton and
started a slow NW movement. This afternoon it is difficult to find a
distinct center. It has become diffused. Another semi-surprise—the
heavy rain and thunderstorms did not engulf Alabama as quickly as we
thought today, but some areas did get locally heavy rain. There was a
string of heavier rain that went north along the Alabama/Georgia
border. This afternoon, some of the heavier rain was still staying
behind over the Northern Gulf of Mexico. A few of the heavier amounts
from Claudette so far:

4.49 Crestview, Florida
3.90 Port St. Joe, Florida
1.37 Wetumpka

The remnant center of Claudette will push into NE Mississippi tonight
and pretty much dissipate.

WHAT NEXT: Claudette brought lots of deep tropical moisture into the
state so more showers and thunderstorms can be expected tomorrow,
numerous at times. Look for scattered showers and thunderstorms on
through Friday, especially on Friday and then we may be treated to a
very pleasant change in the weather. It appears we are going to have
another front move into the state by early Saturday and push all the
way to the Gulf Coast on Sunday and Monday. The weekend looks
generally dry in Central Alabama with mostly sunshine, lower humidity,
cooler nights and afternoons that are comfortable. By Sunday morning,
lows may be in the middle 60s and possibly closer
to 60 in the NE Alabama valleys. We believe the dry weather will last
at least through next Monday.

TROPICAL: Hurricane Bill is the strongest storm in the Tropics so far
this year. He is on the way to becoming a major hurricane. At midday,
sustained winds have reached 90 mph. Fortunately, the NHC five-day
projection carries the center more northward to a position SW of
Bermuda this weekend. We must also watch Ana. She is still pretty
organized passing south of Puerto Rico. The NHC continues to project a
path passing between Cuba and South Florida late in the week.

SAN ANTONIO: Dry, dry is the word in that South Texas city. They have
received only 0.04 so far this month, only 0.97 all summer and just
8.02 for all of 2009 to date. That is a deficiency of slightly over 1
foot. Elsewhere, as we roam, 114 in Bullhead City, Arizona Sunday was
the USA hotspot. Lowest this morning 28 in Yellowstone National Park
and 34 in Deering, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A multi-busy weekend, operating on less
than one hour of sleep in the last 24 hours, so poor Little
Miss Molly had to be neglected. When I get real tired and out of
energy, I go find her, cup her little head in my hands and talk to her
and I am almost immediately feel better and ready to go back to work.
There is something magic about that little 9-pounds of flesh, bones
and hair. She is the best therapy that I could ask for. I think she
knows it, because she has a way of wrapping her little paws around my
conscience. Life goes on.

...Claudette Brings Rain, Storms Our Way...

Tropical Storm Claudette moved inland on the Northwest Florida coast
late last night with maximum winds of 50 mph. The center moved inland
just near Fort Walton Beach. Now the focus turns to the potential for
heavy rains and tornadoes today and the center of the decaying cyclone
makes its way into West Alabama.

RAIN AND STORMS: As instability levels rise with the heating of the
day today, spiral bands of tropical showers and thunderstorms will
form. Those showers will be capable of putting down copious amounts
of rainfall in a short period of time. Look for between one inch of
rain on average across mid-sections of the state, with some spots
getting two inches. South Central sections will get a little more.
Fortunately, flash flooding thresholds are pretty high, so hopefully
that will not be a problem. In fact, lawns and gardens around the
area are about ready for a nice drink of rain.

There will be quite a bit of spin in the atmosphere, obviously, so any
stout updrafts that get going will have the potential to rotate and
could produce small spin up tornadoes. They are quick hitting and
usually short lived, but they can produce some damage, so be alert as
the spiral bands rotate over your location today and tonight. It will
be breezy today across Central Alabama, with southeasterly winds
averaging 10-20 mph with occasional gusts to 30 mph or higher.
Temperatures will top out in the lower and middle 80s, but it will
feel quite humid.

TONIGHT: By this evening, the depression that is the remnants of
Claudette will be on the Alabama/Mississippi border southwest of
Tuscaloosa. Rain and storms will continue to the east of the
weakening low. There could be some left over rotating storms and the
potentials problems they bring.

REST OF THE WEEK: We will still find ourselves in a soupy airmass
Tuesday as Claudette heads into North Mississippi. This means the
chance of more showers and storms. The activity should diminish for
Wednesday. The remnants of Ana could increase showers for Thursday.
Look for decent rain chances again for Friday as a front
approaches. Storms likely Saturday.

ANA/BILL: Ana pretty much fizzled overnight, but Bill was gaining
steam. In fact, by the time that you read this, Bill will likely be a
hurricane, well on his way to becoming a major (category three or
higher) hurricane. Bill will turn out to sea but could threaten Nova
Scotia by the weekend. Ana's remnants could end up in the Gulf by
Wednesday night and could regenerate. It's too early to tell.

next hurricane to hit Galveston occurred on this date with winds
gusting to 120 mph. The storm surge reached 12 feet. 275 fatalities
resulted, in stark contrast to the 6,000 deaths in the 1900 storm.
Only 10% of the 250 homes remaining outside the seawall survived. Are

..Claudette To Bring Rain To Alabama...

The third tropical storm in as many days has gotten the 2009 Atlantic
Hurricane Season started with a bang. Ana appears to be falling apart
and Bill will likely turn out to sea ahead of a big East Coast
trough. But closer to home, we have our own system.

CLAUDETTE: Claudette leads off our trio of tropical trouble on this
Sunday. Tropical Depression Four formed in the SE Gulf last night and
has moved steadily northwest. It will make landfall on the Florida
Panhandle as a mid-range tropical storm tonight. Top winds should be
about 50-60 mph. Heavy rain will overspread the Gulf Coast later
today, especially east of the center's track. The center will move up
through Alabama tonight, taking a position near Tuscaloosa tomorrow
afternoon. Rain and storms will be widespread, with the potential for
heavy rain, gusty winds and even small tornadoes across much of
Central Alabama on Monday.

BILL: By tomorrow morning, Tropical Storm Bill will still be 1,000
miles east of the Lesser Antilles and still be a tropical storm. It
will begin curving to the northwest though in response to a building
trough over the eastern U.S., which will sweep it northward off the
East Coast. It could threaten New England over the weekend, but most
likely will affect the Canadian Maritimes.

ANA: Weak Tropical Storm Ana is about 400 miles east of the islands
of the Lesser Antilles. It will pass through the Leeward Islands
tonight, probably over Guadaloupe. It will bring tropical storm
conditions to the northern Leewards and Virgin Islands. It will then
run the gauntlet of the mountainous islands of the Greater Antilles,
passing south of Puerto Rico, running smack into Hispaniola and
traversing Cuba. This will knock it down if not kill it. It emerges
into the Gulf on Thursday. Don't write this on off just yet.
Another storm took this path in 1979. Its name? Frederic.

YOUR FORECAST: Claudette dominates the weather through Monday. We
stay in a soupy pattern on Tuesday with a good chance of more showers
and storms. Rainfall amounts should average one to one and one half
inches across Central Alabama. We get a break in the rain Wednesday
and Thursday before another front increases our shower and storm
chances for Friday. In addition, by that time, we will be watching to
see how Ana or her remnants interact with the front. Could mean lots
more wet weather late in the week.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: As Ed Sullivan used to say, "a really big
show" is in store for Monday night on our weekly weather netcast with
lots of information about 1969's Hurricane Camille. We will also talk
about all the tropical activity that is going on right now in the
Atlantic basin. Download and listen at www.weatherbrains.com or on
iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Lightning delayed the NFL game between the
Steelers and Eagles at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field for thirty one
minutes. Lightning causes between four and five hundred injuries and
one hundred fatalities each year in the United States. Participants
and spectators at outdoor sporting events are frequently endangered
when severe thunderstorms threaten. Sports organizations have
developed guidelines for member organizations to use when lightning is
in the vicinity.
