...Showery Weather Continues...
TROPICAL AIR: While Tropical Storm Claudette has dissipated, it leaves
a deep pool of moisture over Alabama, which means we will see more
clouds than sun today, along with scattered to numerous showers and
storms. Temperatures will remain below average, with highs mostly in
the mid to upper 80s. Expect similar weather tomorrow and Thursday,
with mixed sun and clouds and the daily chance of scattered showers
and thunderstorms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: Late in the week, a strong upper trough will form
over the eastern third of the nation, driving a cold front down this
way. That front should bring an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms on Friday, followed by a refreshing change in the
weather for the weekend. We are forecasting sunny days and clear
nights over the weekend, with lower humidity levels and cooler nights.
Some of the cooler spots across North Alabama could reach the upper
50s at daybreak Sunday, a nice preview of the coming fall season. The
dry air should stay in place into the first half of next week.
TOPIC: TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ana dissipated late yesterday; the
system is now an open wave moving over the island of Hispaniola. That
wave will move toward the far southern Gulf of Mexico, but
regeneration for now doesn't look especially likely due to the
interaction with Cuba. The only active tropical cyclone now is
Hurricane Bill, which is forecast to become a major hurricane as it
passes north of the Leeward Islands today. A weakness will develop in
the upper ridge north of the system, and accordingly Bill will begin
to move more northward by the weekend; most dynamic computer models
recurve Bill into the open Atlantic well before reaching the East
Coast of the U.S. It would be very close to Bermuda Saturday before it
accelerates into the North Atlantic.
MONDAY'S RAIN: Rain amounts across Alabama yesterday were generally
lighter than forecast as the remnant low of Claudette slowly moved
through the southern and western counties of the state. One of the
heavier totals came from Brookley Field in Mobile with 1.21". Other
amounts included .78" at Evergreen, .58" at Auburn, .57" at Valley
Head, and .20" at the Birmingham Airport. Our Skywatchers at Jasper
and Ragland reported no rain at all yesterday.
ODDS AND ENDS: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley,
CA with 114 degrees. Coldest places were Big Piney and Cora, WY with a
frosty 27 degrees. Coldest place in Alaska was Nikolai with 30
degrees. The rain total yesterday at San Juan, Puerto Rico was 1.75",
thanks to Tropical Depression Ana. One of the heaviest rain totals in
the nation yesterday was not associated with any tropical system; it
came at Kansas City where they were drenched with 3.38".
