...Storms Finally Over...

It was a long 24 hours in Alabama and the Deep South with wave after
wave of severe weather. Georgia and South Carolina were bombarded by
a significant outbreak of severe weather Saturday afternoon and
evening with fatalities being reported. And there is no end in sight,
with additional storms lined up over the next two weeks over the Deep
South.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: After morning lows in the 40s across the area this
morning, temperatures today will warm into the middle 60s for the most
part with a strong late winter sun at work. Spring begins at 12:48
a.m. CDT on Thursday morning this week.

MORE SEVERE WEATHER? Monday looks to be a beautiful day with lots of
sunshine and mild temperatures in the 70s. But the signs of change
will already be in the air as our next weather maker looms on the
horizon. It will become breezy on Monday as the pressure gradient
tightens between high pressure to our east and a developing surface
low over the Texas Panhandle. A powerful upper level system will be
rotating through West Texas at the same time. This upper level system
will become negatively tilted as it rotates toward Alabama. By
Tuesday morning, the low will be in Northeast Texas heading for
southeastern Missouri, a favorable placement for severe weather here.
Showers and storms will start to fire Tuesday evening, but the best
chance for storms looks like it will be after midnight Tuesday night
into early Wednesday morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: High pressure will dominate Alabama's weather on
Thursday and into the weekend before the next storm system approaches
late on Sunday.

SOUTH TEXAS HEAT: Record highs were set across South Texas yesterday
including 98F at Brownsville, 100F at Harlingen and 103F at McAllen.

SPRING BREAK FORECAST: Some folks headed to Washington D.C. for
spring break, where it will be cool and showery. Storms ending today,
then sunny Monday, but showers Tuesday and Wednesday. Breezy Thursday
and sunny Friday. Highs will be mainly in the 50s. Lows will be in
the 30s. For the Gulf Coast: look for showers Tuesday night and
Wednesday, but otherwise fair weather. Highs will be in the 70s, lows
in the 40s and 50s to near 60. For Orlando, showers and storms will
be likely late Wednesday night, but otherwise fine weather with highs
in the 70s and lows in the 50s and 60s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Destructive cold temperatures March 9th,
across Alabama and Georgia affected fruit crops and most vegetables.
Low temperatures over these regions were in the single digits in the
north, low teens across central portions and mid to upper teens in the
south. These temperatures were cold enough to wipe out any fruit crops
that had reached the blooming stage. At 20 degrees even peaches at the
first pink stage of development will have 50% percent losses while at
15 degrees, as much as 90% losses are likely.

...A Wild Night...

Our run of terrible Friday night weather is still intact after rounds
of severe thunderstorms plagued the South overnight. Daylight is
revealing the true nature of the damage in Atlanta, where a disaster
was narrowly missed with a significant tornado touched down in
downtown, causing extensive damage to the Georgia World Congress
Center, CNN and the Omni Hotel. Numerous windows were blown out and
debris litters the streets. The final quarterfinal game of the night
in the SEC Basketball Championship was postponed until today and the
games are being moved to Georgia Tech. Wow. Here in Alabama, we have
had scattered reports of significant wind damage and lots of reports
of large hail.

AND IT'S NOT OVER YET: Our protracted severe weather
event might still have some surprises in store for us here in
Alabama. The low is still back to our west over Mississippi. A
pretty good warm sector is in place over Central and South Alabama
with a warm front along its northern edge. The big question now is
whether warmer air aloft will move in and squash the opportunity for
storms to develop later today. A complex of storms was moving through
the Tennessee Valley at mid-morning. Any storms that reform south of
this during the morning and afternoon could quickly become severe with
the added danger of possible tornadoes. The action could get quite
intense later this afternoon to the east of Alabama, where a tornado
outbreak is possible over Georgia and South Carolina. Pay close
attention to the latest weather conditions throughout the day.

MOVING AHEAD: The low will pass by to our north this
evening dragging a cold front through here and putting an end to the
storms. Drier air will filter in overnight. Lows by morning will be
in the middle 40s. Tomorrow looks like a pleasant day with lots of
sunshine and highs in the 60s. Monday will warm into the 70s as we
get ready for our next system. Another strong low will form to our
west and bring us a chance of overnight storms again Tuesday night
into Wednesday morning. Once again, they will have the potential to
be severe. Things should clear out for the end of the week with our
next system due in here Sunday into Monday.

VOODOO LAND: A low will track north of Alabama next
Friday night into Saturday,, bringing another round of showers and
storms. Look for another powerful low at the end of the following
week as we get ready to close out the month. This system shows signs
of producing heavy snows again over Kentucy and Tennessee with some
snow back into Arkansas and even North Texas.

THE MAUNDER MINIMUM: The aurora borealis was
conspicuously absent in skies over Europe between 1645-1715. In fact,
not a single aurora borealis was observed by Royal Astronomers between
1645 and 1708. The absence of the beautiful glowing displays in the
night sky was caused by a lack of solar activity during that time.
Astronomer E. W. Maunder pointed out the sunspot minimum between 1645
and 1715. It is named for him: the Maunder Minimum. The lack of
solar activity probably contributed to the global cooling that led to
the Little Ice Age, a period of cooling that lasted from 1400 until
1850.

...Strong Storms Possible Today...

One more round of storms is possible across Alabama today
as another upper level disturbance swings across the state. Some
disorganized storms brought some rain and a little hail to parts of
North Alabama Friday morning. They were associated with a passing
upper disturbance moved through. No severe weather was reported in
Alabama with the morning activity. Skies quickly cleared behind the
first system and sunshine broke out, pushing temperatures into the 70s
across the area. A couple of thunderstorms developed during the
afternoon with the heating of the day, and some of them were able to
become severe with some penny and nickel sized hail. The storms blew
up as they moved into better shear in Georgia. A possible tornado
struck t he downtown area of Atlanta, including the Georgia Dome,
where the SEC Basketball Tournament was being played. Some injuries
were reported in downtown, but not in the Dome. It was a miracle that
the game went into overtime, or some fans might have been caught
outside as they left.

TODAY: Storms formed ahead of a decent surface low
moving eastward out of Texas overnight. Those storms will be moving
across the area this morning. They could be strong to severe, so they
will have to be monitored, mainly for the threat of large hail and
damaging winds. Look for a better chance of severe weather east of
I-65 this afternoon as the system moves eastward toward Georgia.
Sunshine should break out from west to east and temperatures will warm
back into the lower 70s with a strong south and southwesterly wind
thanks to the surface low moving east along the Alabama/Tennessee
border. Tonight will feature drier air pushing into Alabama. Lows
tonight should fall into the upper 40s as clouds fill back in for a
bit. But t hey
should be gone by sunrise or shortly thereafter.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a great day with no weather
related problems. Skies will become mostly sunny and the mercury will
warm into the middle and upper 60s on the strength of a warm late
winter sun.

NEXT SYSTEM: Monday should be an excellent day with lots
of sunshine and mild temperatures climbing into the lower 70s. Nearly
perfect. But things will be changing again by Tuesday. Look for a
whopper of an upper level trough to be swinging through Texas by
Tuesday morning. Things will dawn mild and humid on Tuesday morning
across Alabama with an increasing south wind. Showers and storms
could form during the day and they will have to be watched, but the
main action should come after midnight as a powerful line of storms
enters West Alabama after midnight and sweeps across the state.
Damaging winds should be the main severe weather mode with this
system, but as always, we will have to monitor.

ON THIS DATE IN 1899: An early morning F2 tornado
skipped along a four mile path on the eastern side of Birmingham from
Avondale to Woodlawn. Twenty five homes and two churches were damaged
or destroyed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: Severe thunderstorms in Arkansas
produced 2 violent (F4) tornadoes. The first tornado tracked 48 miles
through Van Buren, Cleburne, and Independence counties. 2 people were
killed and 13 were injured. 63 homes and 22 mobile homes were
destroyed. The tornado lifted the highway 16 bridge and threw it into
Greers Ferry Lake. The bridge was 1/4 mile long and had a large steel
superstructure. The second tornado tore through Jackson and Poinsett
counties with 5 people killed and 12 injured.
