...Front To Bring Showers, Storms...

Showers and thunderstorms were developing early this afternoon across
the northern half of Alabama. Some of them will be strong this
afternoon, with deadly lightning, brief torrential rains and even some
damaging winds possible.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY: A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect
for Jefferson and Shelby Counties for today and tomorrow because of
ozone. The alert means that sensitive individuals should limit their
exposure because the air is unhealthy for them. Everyone should take
steps to limit their emissions.

OUTLOOK: Hot, hazy and humid conditions will prevail across Alabama
for much of the coming week thanks to high pressure that will be
building across the region. In fact, by next week, a bubble of hot
high level upper pressure will be centered over Alabama by Wednesday
of the coming week. This means even hotter temperatures than we are
currently experiencing. Readings will be well in the 90s, mostly
middle and upper 90s, with a few 100 degrees likely.

RAIN CHANCES: With the intense heating, a few isolated storms will be
able to form each afternoon during the week ahead. The GFS hints at a
couple of light showers overnight tonight across the area, so we will
keep that in mind.

NATIONAL HAZARDS ASSESSMENT: The National Weather Service publishes a
National Hazards Assessment. It covers the upcoming two week period.
For the period August 6-17, severe drought is expected to continue
across three major sections of the nation. One is obviously the
Southeast, including all but Southwest Alabama. The others are the
west and the upper Midwest. The good news for the Upper Midwest,
including much of Minnesota is that some relief is expected in the
form of heavy rains during the next two weeks. Large wildfires are
ongoing into the Northwest. Flooding will continue across South
Texas. Finally, a large area of well above normal temperatures is
expected from the Central Plains, across the Mississippi, Ohio and
Tennessee Valleys into the Mid-Atlantic states including north
Alabama.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave that has been passing through the
western Caribbean intensified this morning. We have been tracking
this feature since it was a thousand miles east of the Lesser
Antilles. But it has moved into Central America now and development
in the Atlantic is impossible. The Pacific could be another story…

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Lightning does occasionally strike airliners in
flight, usually with little effect. On this date, a DC-10 flying from
Denver to Minneapolis was struck in flight and suffered some
structural damage and damage to the plane's avionics. Fortunately,
the place managed to land safely.

...More Hot Weather In Our Future...

I am sure that you read the discouraging news on the front page of the
Birmingham News this morning. The are covered by the exception
drought stage has expanded. But wait, you read that right here
yesterday with our very own J.B. Elliott updating us on the latest
report from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: The bad news is that it is not only
dry, but the air quality is bad. Today and tomorrow, we are under a
Code Orange Air Quality Alert in Jefferson and Shelby Counties. Ozone
is the problem. The alert means t hat sensitive individuals need to
limit their outdoor exposure.

YOUR FORECAST: Alabama will remain under the influence of high
pressure that will be ridging in from the southern Plains over the
next several days. Sunny conditions will greet the day each morning,
giving was to partly cloudy conditions as convective temperatures are
reached. And those temperatures are going to be hot, with readings
well into the 90s and approaching the century mark at times. With
that kind of heat, isolated storms will be able to develop on most
afternoons, like we saw yesterday. And as we saw, they can be ornery.
So, no drought busting rains anywhere in sight.

THE TROPICS: The tropical wave in the Caribbean continues pushing
westward with little signs of development. Although conditions are
not unfavorable for development, it is running out of time, at least
on the Atlantic side. It actually could form once it gets into the
Pacific. The low pressure over the northern Gulf could slowly
develop, although the chances here are looking slim also.

DR. WILLIAM GRAY FORECAST: The team at Colorado State University
has lowered their forecast of total named storms in the Atlantic basin
this year to 15 from 17. Their prognostication of the number of
hurricane stands at 8 and the number of major hurricanes at 4. Their
first forecast called for nine hurricanes, including five major ones.
So far Subtropical Storm Andrea occurred in May off the southeast
coast of the U.S., becoming the first May cyclone since 1981.
Tropical Storm Barry brought beneficial rains to Florida June 1-2.
Tropical Storm Chantal formed between Bermuda and the Bahamas earlier
this week and brushed Newfoundland as it became extratropical.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Dallas, Texas finally saw its incredible
string of 42 straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees broken
on this date. There would be 18 more 100 plus days in August and 4
more in September. The month of July was the hottest ever in the Big
D. There would be no measurable rain in the month at Dallas. The
tremendous heat wave and drought that summer killed 1,200 people
across the nation. Losses reached $200 million.

...Code Orange Air Quality Alert Today...

The Alabama Partners for Clean Air have posted a Code Orange Air
Quality Alert for today for Jefferson and Shelby Counties. The
offending pollutant is particulates. We used to call it smog. I
guess we still cause it haze. But it is dangerous to people with
sensitive lungs. Some actions that you can take today to help the
situations: 1. carpool or take public transportation 2. Combine
errands into one trip 3. Postpone unnecessary travel. 4. Avoid drive
thru windows to limit idling your engine. 5..Mow the lawn another
day.

OUR FORECAST: I think that we meteorologists have been guilty of
wishful thinking of late. The GFS model had been persistently
predicting that a decent warm core or tropical type low would develop
over the northern Gulf of Mexico. It then moved it inland to the
northeast, spreading rain over parts of the Deep South. The hope has
been that the low could move slowly, spreading some solid rains over
drought stricken sections of Alabama. It is looking like that
situation is less and less likely. No surprise there. High
pressure will remain in control of Alabama's weather for much of the
next ten days. In fact, by next week, an upper level ridge of high
pressure will intensify over the Deep South and we will likely see
some of the hottest weather we have seen in a while. Readings over
the century mark may well be commonplace next week.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave moving through the Caribbean has been
showing a lot more organization of late. Air Force reconnaissance
could not find a closed circulation yesterday, but there is still
opportunity for the system to become a tropical depression as it
continues to move westward. Another plane is scheduled to investigate
later today.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Issac Monroe Cline died on this date. Cline
was the Chief Meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau Office in
Galveston Texas on September 8, 1900 as the infamous Galveston
Hurricane was coming ashore nearly unannounced. Cline lost his wife,
but survived with his three daughters floating atop debris carried on
the 15 foot storm surge that inundated Galveston Island that night.
6000 people died, making it the deadliest natural disaster in United
States history.

REMEMBERING ERIN: On this date in 1955, Hurricane Erin was nearing
the coast of the Florida Panhandle. The hurricane had emerged into
the Gulf Mexico the previous day after crossing the Florida Peninsula.
By early morning, Erin's sustained winds reached 100mph in a small
area near its center. A 98-mph wind gust was observed at Mary Esther
Field and Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The storm came ashore near
Pensacola, Florida later that morning causing six fatalities and an
estimated $700 million damage. The barrier island stretching from
Pensacola Beach to Navarre Beach absorbed the brunt of the storm as it
came ashore. Sustained winds of 94 mph and gusts up to 103 mph were
measured at Pensacola during the height of the storm.

...One Eye On the Gulf...

Three areas of interest in the tropical Atlantic early on this
Thursday morning. We will talk about two of them later in this
report. Closest to home, we are seeing a flare up of thunderstorms
over the northern Gulf of Mexico, associated with our old frontal
boundary. That is a frequent breeding area for tropical systems in
the Gulf. There is a good chance that this will develop into
something tropical in nature. But, we really have no idea where it
might go. The models are no help at all. It could remain stationary
off the coast. It could drift north into Alabama or Mississippi. It
could drift west toward Texas. We will have to wait and see. If it
drifts our way, it could be a big help in the rainfall department.

FORECAST RATIONALE: Show your work. You had to do that in math in
grade school, right? We always try to show our work here also. The
low in the Gulf is south of Houma, LA this morning. Our best guess is
that it will drift northward toward the coast. This will cause a wet
day all along the Gulf Coast into the Panhandle. We stay high and dry
through Friday, with high pressure over the Smokies in control of our
weather. It begins to break down by Saturday and the moisture edges
northward. This means scattered storms for Saturday, and a better
chance for Sunday and Monday. Keep your fingers crossed.

TROPICS: Chantal is a non-tropical low moving across the shipping
lanes of the North Atlantic. An Air Force plane investigating the
tropical wave entering the Caribbean could not find a closed low
yesterday afternoon. The system still has a good base of thunderstorm
activity and there is a chance that a tropical depression could form
in the next day or two.

TYPHOON USAGI: The powerful typhoon that we have been tracking in the
western Pacific will reach the southern islands of Japan Thursday
evening. It will pass over or between Kyushu and Shikoku and over
southern Honshu before recurving. The recurve will carry the storm
back over northern Honshu around noon on Saturday, Birmingham time.
It is weakening, and it may barely be typhoon strength when it makes
landfall this evening. By Saturday, it may barely be a tropical
storm.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Air France Flight 358, an Airbus A340-300, was
on approach to Toronto's Rearson International Airport. A severe
thunderstorm warning was in effect for the city. It had been a rough
weather day, and the airport had been closed several times. As the
plane landed in windy, rainy conditions, the plane overran the end of
the runway and broke into pieces in a ravine. All 309 passengers and
crew escaped before the plane exploded in flames and burned. Only 43
people were injured, and the injuries were described as minor.
Discussions after the incident indicated that the gully at the end of
the runway needed to be filled in to provide a longer safe zone.

...Hot Hot Hot...

Welcome to August. We are on the downhill run of summer now. Right
now, the normal high is 91F, the normal low 70F. By the end of the
month, the normal high will be 88F and the normal low 67F. The
hottest it has ever been in Birmingham in any August is 104F on August
8, 1935. The coolest August reading is 51F on August 31, 1946. It
generally rains on ten days in t he month, with storms on nine. The
normal monthly rainfall is 3.48 inches. 13.83 inches fell in
Birmingham in 1901. August is the least cloudy month in Birmingham,
with the sky being cloudy only 19% of the time. This fact is a little
misleading, as there are months, including September and October with
a lower percentage mean sky cover.

FORECAST: Our relatively dry airmass remains over the northern three
quarters of Alabama this morning. The front lies over South Alabama.
Low pressure is expected to develop this morning near the Gulf Coast
around Mobile. There is a lot of hope that this low could drift up
into Alabama over the next five days and enhance our rain chances.
That is a possibility, and we will watch for that. But for now, we
will continue to call for hot and mostly dry conditions until the end
of the week, with the real rain chances staying to our south and
southeast. We will increase our rain chances by the weekend. A flat
upper level ridge will stay in place for the next five days, with
indications that a trough will begin forming over the eastern U.S. by
this time next week.

TROPICS: We are moving toward the heart of hurricane season and the
Atlantic basin is becoming more active. Tropical Storm Chantal is
quickly becoming extratropical over the northern Atlantic. It will
brush the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland today as it heads out to
sea to become a powerful extratropical storm, a threat only to
shipping. A tropical wave is approaching the Windward Islands. This
system is fighting some really dry air. No significant development is
expected for the time being.

USAGI: In the western Pacific, powerful Typhoon Usagi is targeting
the islands of Japan. Usagi means Rabbit in Japanese. The typhoon
will peak with top winds of about 150 mph later this morning before it
begins moving over water with cooler oceanic heat content. The
typhoon will reach the southernmost islands of Japan around noon
Thursday, still as a formidable typhoon. It will recurve back of the
northern part of the island chain, passing near Sapporo over the
weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Over thirty five inches of rain fell in the
Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, Texas as the remnants of
Tropical Storm Amelia stalled across the area after moving inland.
Major flash flooding resulted through the 4th of August. .

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Andrews AFB MD records a wind gust to 149 mph
in a microburst that occurred just ten minutes after Air Force One had
landed with President Reagan aboard. Such microbursts have been the
cause of plane crashes.

===================================================================

...Goodbye July...

Today we say goodbye to the seventh month of the year. Weatherwise,
it will not go down as a memorable month in the record books. The
normal average high in July is 90.6F. This is the hottest month of
the year in Birmingham. July 2007 will end up a little cooler than
normal, with an average high of 88.7F. The normal average low is
69.7F. We will end up a little warmer than that with an average low
for the month of 71.4F. The hottest day was the 1st, when the mercury
rose to 97F. We should finish the month at 3.43 inches of rainfall,
which is less than the normal of 5.09 inches. 20.12 inches fell in
July 1916. The days are getting shorter and before long, the normal
temperatures will begin to go backwards. We are in what is
climatologically our hottest time of the year.

OUR FORECAST: The boundary that has been responsible for the drier
air across North and Central Alabama is even further south on this
Tuesday morning. I guess you can't totally rule our an isolated
shower or storm today, but it is highly unlikely. It will be hot this
afternoon, almost dangerously so, with heat indices well over the 100F
mark. Take it easy out there if you will be working or exercising.
It's more of the same through the end of the week and probably into
the weekend with mostly dry and hot conditions. Highs will be in the
middle and upper 90s.

TROPICS: Two disturbances being monitored in the tropical Atlantic
today. One is a tropical wave about 1,000 miles east of the Windward
Islands. This system is running into some dry air, and dry air may
keep it from developing in the next couple of days. Still, it shows
some decent organization and must be watched. Our other disturbance,
passing north of Bermuda is running out of time to develop into a
tropical cyclone before it merges with a frontal system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1949: Lightning struck a baseball field at Baker,
Florida while a game is in progress. The shortstop and third baseman
were instantly killed and the second baseman was fatally injured.
Fifty people out of the crowd of three hundred spectators were also
injured. The lightning bolt dug a twenty foot long ditch through the
infield.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: The Major League Baseball All-Star Game in
Boston's Fenway Park (second of season – they played two each year
between 1959 and 1962) was called because of drizzle at the of nine
innings with the score tied 1-1. The drizzle was caused by a
persistent east wind off of Massachusetts Bay. There have only been
two ties in All-Star Series history: this one and the 2002 game,
which ended in a 7-7 tie after eleven innings when both sides ran out
of pitchers.

...Front To Bring Drier Air...

A weak cool front sliding across the northern part of the state
brought some decent thunderstorms to parts of Central Alabama on
Sunday, giving a few luck locations a good dousing, but still n
drought busting rainfall for most folks. That same front is still
with us today and will bring more showers and storms to areas south of
Birmingham today, then mainly to South Alabama by tomorrow.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Recent showers have shrunk the area of level 5 or
exceptional drought across Alabama to an area from northern Tuscaloosa
County and southern Walker County through much of Jefferson County and
then northeast, straddling I-59 for, including Blount, Marshall and
DeKalb Counties southward through Calhoun and St. Clair Counties and
into northern Shelby County. This area will likely shrink again after
some folks received decent rains this past week. The exceptional
drought area across the state shrunk from 25% to 17%. The extreme or
higher area stayed the same at 42% of the state. All of the state
(100%) is considered to be in a drought. New data will be released
again Thursday.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The diffuse cool front is lying over North Central
Alabama this morning. This means that there will be a very good
chance of showers and storms today over areas mainly south of a line
from Fayette to Clanton to Lanett. There could be a scattered storm
north of this line, but most of the rainfall will push further south
today. By tomorrow, the front and attendant rainfall will be over
South Central Alabama, from about Montgomery to the coast. This
should mean predominantly dry weather for North and Central Alabama,
although this is July in Alabama, and there is an outside chance of a
stray storm. There are some indications we might see a low in the
northern Gulf later in the week, and this could be good if it moves up
into the Deep South. Could be tropical, but not a big chance to
develop into anything significant. We will call for showers to be on
the increase by Friday into Saturday.

TROPICS: A tropical depression could form today between the Bahamas
and Bermuda. This system is moving north northeast and could bring
heavy rains and winds to near tropical storm force to the island. But
the system is not expected to be named.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: The Dopplers on Wheels are truck mounted
radars that have been instrumental in studying tornadoes and
hurricanes. A DOW unit was utilized during the Robert Fire near
Glacier National Park in Montana in late July 2003 to learn more about
the wind patterns in wildfires. The information gained will be useful
in helping make short term forecasts possible that can help fire
fighters be better prepared for sudden wind shifts that cause fires to
spread unexpectedly. The mobile Doppler radars could be routinely
pressed into service during wildfires.

...Scattered Storms Today; Tomorrow..

Our weather in the short term will be influenced by a weak and diffuse
trough that will slowly sink southward across the area. Showers and
storms will be scattered across Central Alabama today. Tomorrow, they
should be limited to areas south of Birmingham. By Tuesday, they will
be relegated to South Alabama.
THIS AFTERNOON/TONIGHT: Plentiful sunshine south of the front, which
extended from Randolph County through Blount and onto Winston and
Franklin County at late morning allowed for rapid heating of the
atmosphere. Temperatures warmed quickly and cumulus clouds began to
form. Showers starting popping up across the area before the noon
hour. Additional showers and storms will fire with the intense
heating and the proximity of the front. The ones that do form will
feature very heavy rainfall and deadly lightning as well as some gusty
winds, so treat them with respect.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The front should drop far enough south overnight to
allow drier air to filter into North Alabama. Showers and storms on
Monday will likely be limited to areas south of Birmingham. This
drier air will continue to move into the area Monday night, pushing
the showers well into South Alabama. This should yield dry and
predominantly sunny conditions for us here in Central Alabama Starting
Tuesday and lasting through Friday. Enough moisture should return for
scattered showers again by Saturday, although I have a hunch it could
be a little earlier. Look for hot conditions for the week.
NATIONALLY: Not much happening nationally. Heat across the Dakotas
and Montana: a record high of 100F at Great Falls, Montana.
Otherwise, rain and storms from the East Coast across the Deep South
into Texas are the main weather stories this afternoon.
TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather east of the Bahamas has flared
with convective activity this morning. The system is moving to the
north northeast in the general direction of Bermuda. Upper level
winds are marginal for development, and while a tropical depression
could form, I don't think that a tropical storm is in the cards.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf, things are
quiet.
ON THIS DATE IN 2002: A 2 year old boy picking vegetables with his
parents in Blount County when lightning struck him The family called
911 immediately, but put the child in an automobile and started for
the hospital. Paramedics caught up with the family and began CPR. An
Air Evac helicopter was called to transport the child to the hospital,
but the little boy was dead on arrival. The important thing to
remember is that many lightning victims simply stop breathing.
Administering CPR immediately will often resuscitate a lightning
victim.

...Fairly Good Rain Chances Today...

On the weather maps this morning, we find a wave stationary front
along the Alabama-Tennessee border. A surface low is located to the
northeast of Alabama over Northeast Tennessee. Another is to the west
over the Oklahoma Panhandle. As the second low passes to our north by
tomorrow, it will propel the front southward into Alabama, and it will
be followed by an influx of drier air.

MODEL DIFFERENCES: Significant differences in the models mean that we
have to choose sides in the numerical weather prediction department as
we move ahead in the forecast.

TODAY AND TONIGHT: A moist and unstable airmass will be acted upon by
the weak front as its edges into North Alabama. This will provide
enough spark for showers and thunderstorms. Coverage today should be
over fifty percent across the area. Showers and storms will linger
tonight as the front makes its move southward.

MONDAY: We will base the forecast on the front starting out Monday
morning across North Central Alabama. This means that rainfall
chances will be from about Birmingham south.

REST OF THE WEEK: By Tuesday, we expect dry conditions across the
area, and temperatures will be heating up. We will see mid to upper
90s by Wednesday and Thursday. We should see a southerly flow return
by Friday, meaning that isolated showers and storms will be possible
again with the heating of the afternoon. Scattered showers and storms
will be with us as we head into
the weekend.

TROPICS: Low pressure east of the Bahamas has a chance to become a
tropical depression over
the next twenty four hours as it moves north northeast. But there is
sufficient wind shear in place to likely keep the system from further
development into a tropical storm.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Record heat across the South. Tuscaloosa
established its all-time record high temperature with a reading of 107
degrees. The high at Mobile reached 105 to establish an all-time
record high for that station.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: A Boy Scout hike up Mount Whitney in
California turned tragic when lightning struck the tarp tht had set up
in a meadow to shelter them from rain. The scout leader and one scout
were killed. The scouts were from Troop 7001 in St. Helena,
California. They had been on a nine day hike along the John Muir
Trail. Scouts were able to keep one troop member alive by
administering CPR for over an hour.

UNASHAMED!

Wouldn't it be awful to be ashamed of the most important things in our lives?

Many of us struggle when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
Like our faith. There are times for all of us when we are tempted to be
ashamed of our faith. Or we downplay our faith so we won't offend someone.

Wouldn't it be great to live unashamed of our faith? Discover what it means
to live unashamed of the gospel and of Jesus Christ in a new sermon series
at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover beginning Sunday, August 12.
Worship and Sunday School hours are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.
