...Front To Bring Showers, Storms...

Showers and thunderstorms were developing early this afternoon across
the northern half of Alabama. Some of them will be strong this
afternoon, with deadly lightning, brief torrential rains and even some
damaging winds possible.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY: A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in effect
for Jefferson and Shelby Counties for today and tomorrow because of
ozone. The alert means that sensitive individuals should limit their
exposure because the air is unhealthy for them. Everyone should take
steps to limit their emissions.

OUTLOOK: Hot, hazy and humid conditions will prevail across Alabama
for much of the coming week thanks to high pressure that will be
building across the region. In fact, by next week, a bubble of hot
high level upper pressure will be centered over Alabama by Wednesday
of the coming week. This means even hotter temperatures than we are
currently experiencing. Readings will be well in the 90s, mostly
middle and upper 90s, with a few 100 degrees likely.

RAIN CHANCES: With the intense heating, a few isolated storms will be
able to form each afternoon during the week ahead. The GFS hints at a
couple of light showers overnight tonight across the area, so we will
keep that in mind.

NATIONAL HAZARDS ASSESSMENT: The National Weather Service publishes a
National Hazards Assessment. It covers the upcoming two week period.
For the period August 6-17, severe drought is expected to continue
across three major sections of the nation. One is obviously the
Southeast, including all but Southwest Alabama. The others are the
west and the upper Midwest. The good news for the Upper Midwest,
including much of Minnesota is that some relief is expected in the
form of heavy rains during the next two weeks. Large wildfires are
ongoing into the Northwest. Flooding will continue across South
Texas. Finally, a large area of well above normal temperatures is
expected from the Central Plains, across the Mississippi, Ohio and
Tennessee Valleys into the Mid-Atlantic states including north
Alabama.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave that has been passing through the
western Caribbean intensified this morning. We have been tracking
this feature since it was a thousand miles east of the Lesser
Antilles. But it has moved into Central America now and development
in the Atlantic is impossible. The Pacific could be another story…

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Lightning does occasionally strike airliners in
flight, usually with little effect. On this date, a DC-10 flying from
Denver to Minneapolis was struck in flight and suffered some
structural damage and damage to the plane's avionics. Fortunately,
the place managed to land safely.
