...Hot Hot Hot...

Welcome to August. We are on the downhill run of summer now. Right
now, the normal high is 91F, the normal low 70F. By the end of the
month, the normal high will be 88F and the normal low 67F. The
hottest it has ever been in Birmingham in any August is 104F on August
8, 1935. The coolest August reading is 51F on August 31, 1946. It
generally rains on ten days in t he month, with storms on nine. The
normal monthly rainfall is 3.48 inches. 13.83 inches fell in
Birmingham in 1901. August is the least cloudy month in Birmingham,
with the sky being cloudy only 19% of the time. This fact is a little
misleading, as there are months, including September and October with
a lower percentage mean sky cover.

FORECAST: Our relatively dry airmass remains over the northern three
quarters of Alabama this morning. The front lies over South Alabama.
Low pressure is expected to develop this morning near the Gulf Coast
around Mobile. There is a lot of hope that this low could drift up
into Alabama over the next five days and enhance our rain chances.
That is a possibility, and we will watch for that. But for now, we
will continue to call for hot and mostly dry conditions until the end
of the week, with the real rain chances staying to our south and
southeast. We will increase our rain chances by the weekend. A flat
upper level ridge will stay in place for the next five days, with
indications that a trough will begin forming over the eastern U.S. by
this time next week.

TROPICS: We are moving toward the heart of hurricane season and the
Atlantic basin is becoming more active. Tropical Storm Chantal is
quickly becoming extratropical over the northern Atlantic. It will
brush the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland today as it heads out to
sea to become a powerful extratropical storm, a threat only to
shipping. A tropical wave is approaching the Windward Islands. This
system is fighting some really dry air. No significant development is
expected for the time being.

USAGI: In the western Pacific, powerful Typhoon Usagi is targeting
the islands of Japan. Usagi means Rabbit in Japanese. The typhoon
will peak with top winds of about 150 mph later this morning before it
begins moving over water with cooler oceanic heat content. The
typhoon will reach the southernmost islands of Japan around noon
Thursday, still as a formidable typhoon. It will recurve back of the
northern part of the island chain, passing near Sapporo over the
weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Over thirty five inches of rain fell in the
Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, Texas as the remnants of
Tropical Storm Amelia stalled across the area after moving inland.
Major flash flooding resulted through the 4th of August. .

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: Andrews AFB MD records a wind gust to 149 mph
in a microburst that occurred just ten minutes after Air Force One had
landed with President Reagan aboard. Such microbursts have been the
cause of plane crashes.

UNASHAMED!

Wouldn't it be awful to be ashamed of the most important things in our lives?

Many of us struggle when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
Like our faith. There are times for all of us when we are tempted to be
ashamed of our faith. Or we downplay our faith so we won't offend someone.

Wouldn't it be great to live unashamed of our faith? Discover what it means
to live unashamed of the gospel and of Jesus Christ in a new sermon series
at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover beginning Sunday, August 12.
Worship and Sunday School hours are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.
