ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday August 8, 2009
===================================================================
Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is a new sermon series beginning on Sunday,
August 16 at Hunter Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't
have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover.

...Hawaii Eyes Felicia...

It's not too often that we spend time talking about Hawaiian weather.
It's not that it's boring. But it's hard to say much about the
weather in Paradise. Hawaiians don't get too uptight about much, not
even hurricanes. At least until they get within 500 miles of the
islands. Forecasters get uptight a lot earlier, and when it looked
like Felicia was heading toward the islands this week, they got the
Hurricane Hunters ready. Felicia is a little less than 1,000 miles
east of Hilo early this afternoon. The hurricane is weakening and it
is expected to be a tropical storm, or perhaps a tropical depression
by the time it reaches the islands Monday. More on the Hurricane
Hunters special missions on AlabamaWX.com.

SUMMERY SATURDAY: Visible satellite photos this afternoon look about
like you would expect for August over Alabama with lots of cumulus
clouds everywhere. A little enhanced band across the Central Part of
the state is associated with some convergence from an upper
disturbance moving northwest into Louisiana. More showers and a
couple of storms will develop this afternoon from around Columbus GA
up into the Tuscaloosa/Greater Birmingham areas. Temperatures are
topping out in the 90s. Fair skies tonight.

REST OF THE WEEKEND : I think we will see widely scattered showers
and storms on Sunday as moisture levels come up a bit and the
disturbance continues to swing around the western periphery of the
upper ridge that is over the Southeast. Temperatures will again be in
the 90s.

NEW WORK WEEK: Shower and storm chances will be return to near or
just above typical for late summer in Alabama as we head into the new
work week. Warm and humid conditions will prevail next week with
scattered storms each day.

IN THE ATLANTIC: The disturbance about 500 miles east of the islands
has shown signs of a little better organization, but it is battling
dry air and the chance of development looks low. We will monitor it.
Another disturbance fresh off the coast of Africa will have the
potential to develop and I would not be surprised to see a depression
in the eastern Atlantic after midweek.

WEATHERBRAINS: It will be a busy show Monday night as we hear from
Hawaii as they experience Hurricane Felicia and welcome author Abby
Sallenger to hear all about the 1856 Last Island Hurricane in
Louisiana. It is a fascinating and compelling story that is part of
legend and lore in Louisiana. He believes there are warnings in the
story for us as we continue to experience a warming planet. We will
also have Dr. Tim Coleman along to tell us how he got out of Oklahoma
alive and about his presentation at the National Weather Center.
The show will be available late Monday night at
www.WeatherBrains.com. You can also subscribe on iTunes. It's free!
Get a chance to win a copy of Dr. Sallenger's book by following the
WeatherBrains tweets at www.twitter.com/WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1851: The Electric Telegraph Company of London
produced a daily weather map using reports received by telegraph. The
map was sold to visitors to London's Great Expedition at Hyde Park.
People paid one penny for a copy of the map.

...A Hot Saturday...

On the weather maps this morning, we find a ridge of high pressure in
the upper atmosphere over Alabama and surface high pressure over the
Carolinas. A tropical wave is passing along the underside of the
upper ridge, and will brings an increased chance of showers to
Louisiana today. South Alabama will get in on some activity this
afternoon.

WEEKEND FORECAST: A fairly typical summertime Saturday is in store for
Central Alabama today. It will be partly cloudy and hot with highs in
the lower 90s. Tonight will be mostly clear and warm, with overnight
lows in the lower 70s. Sunday will feature partly cloudy and
seasonably hot conditions again, but we will introduce the chance of
an isolated thunderstorm over central sections of the state. Highs
tomorrow will be in the lower 90s again.

NEW WORK WEEK: Showers and storms will become a daily fixture as we
head into the new work week, with about a one in three to one in two
chance each afternoon. Highs and lows will be right around average:
91/70.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is still quiet. The GFS tries to develop
a low pressure system in the Central Atlantic early next week, but
degrades it to a wave as it passes north of the islands. Look for a
significant uptick in tropical cyclone activity starting at mid-month
as an upward pulse in the Madden-Julian Oscillation overspreads the
Atlantic basin. Hurricane Felicia will gradually weaken into a
tropical storm as it moves over cooler sea surface temperatures before
it crosses the big island of Hawaii on Monday.

BEACH FORECAST: A deep southerly flow will transport disturbed
weather northward out of the Gulf Coast, and this means increased
chances of showers and storms along the beautiful beaches of Alabama
and Northwest Florida for the next few days. But, as always, a rainy
day at the beach beats any day just about anywhere else.

WEATHERBRAINS: Getting excited about Monday night's episode of
WeatherBrains. Author Abby Sallenger will recount the story of the
Last Island Hurricane that struck virtually without warning in 1856.
Scientist Peter Walker will also weigh in on the paper he co-authored
about the correlation between Pacific warming phases and land falling
U.S. hurricanes. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com to listen, or subscribe
at iTunes. Follow the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: A rare F2 tornado skipped along a nine mile
path across parts of the New York City Metro area. The tornado first
touched down on Staten Island about 6:22 in the morning. The tornado
crossed the Verrazano Narrows and touched down in the Bay Ridge area
of Brooklyn. The storm caused massive problems for the morning
commute in the Big Apple, with trees down on train lines and subways
knocked out of commission. The problems would continue into the
following day. It was the highest rated tornado ever to strike New
York City and the first tornado to hit Brooklyn since 1889. More
tornadoes that hit cities on AlabamaWX.com.

MOISTURE GRADUALLY RETURNING: A couple of nice days enjoyed by all
when the drier air moved into the state a few days ago. Lots of
sunshine, the humidity was a bit lower and we actually had some cool
overnight temperatures, especially over the north half of the state.
For example: lows this morning included 62 in Crossville, 63 in
Scrougeout, 65 in Decatur and 66 in Cullman and Pinson. Down state
lows were generally around 70 or better.

Some moisture was already gathering off shore and moisture will be
spreading eastward also, so we can expect more humid conditions over
the next few days.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Here in Central Alabama we should get through
most of the weekend without rain although a few thunderstorms could
show up on Sunday. After that, we will settle into a typical mid-
August routine of scattered showers and thunderstorms each day.
Meanwhile, high temperatures will be more typical of mid-August closer
to the 90-degree mark instead of some of the mid 90s we have had lately.

AT THE BEACH: Not the best of weather as though showers and storms
over the North Gulf come inland. There is a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday at Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and
other locations. By early next week, it will settle down somewhat to
the usual scattered ones each day. High temperatures will be close to
90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Pacific Ocean is fairly active, but the
Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean and Gulf
of Mexico, shows no sign of tropical development. So, Ana is still a
lady in waiting.

WILDFIRES: Even Alaska has some major wildfires going because of the
dry weather. In some parts, the fires cover an area as big as
Connecticut. Fires are also a problem in the drought stricken area of
South Texas and more in the Far West.

DEATH VALLEY: Blistering heat is a daily occurrence there in summer—
that is, most of the time. It is interesting to note that some much
cooler air spread into that region of the country yesterday and the
official forecast for Death Valley, including Furnace Creek and
Stovepipe Wells, was only 102. They will quickly return to normal with
a forecast of 119 Wednesday and Thursday. In Iraq, the high for
Baghdad was expected to be 115 for the next several days. Hottest in
the USA yesterday was 114 at Bullhead City, Arizona. The low this
morning was a subfreezing 31 at Ely, Nevada. Matt Marshall, our friend
in Northern Utah, says it is like mid-September today and this
weekend. It was 51 this morning and highs will only be in the upper
60s Saturday and 49 Sunday morning.

CANADA GEESE: News reports indicate that there has been a significant
increase in population. We will depend on our daily reader in Saranac
Lake, New York to let us know when those interesting V-formation of
geese head south.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The minority owner is keeping all kinds
of weird hours this week, so Little Miss Molly automatically cannot
settle into a good routine. Another late bathroom walk last night. She
was so sleepy and tired that she walked very slowly. However, the
mention of a treat perked her up and she came racing back in the
front door. She finally got about 10 hours sleep in the king-size bed
and awoke this morning demanding a ballgame. She got her wish. She is
my boss. Life goes on.....

...Air Quality Alert Today...

Strong high pressure over Alabama is producing a very stable airmass.
Unfortunately, stable can quickly become stagnant, and that will be
the case this time as well. The Alabama Partners for Clean Air have
issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Friday for Jefferson and
Shelby counties. The culprit is ozone. Some actions you can take to
help the situation include: carpooling or taking the bus; postpone
unnecessary travel – combine errands; limit idling/avoid drive thrus;
mow the lawn another day; don't burn leaves or trash and don't fill
you gas tank until after 6 p.m.

HOT AND DRY AHEAD: Quite a bit of uncertainty in this forecast
package. We have a building ridge of high pressure aloft over the
southeastern United States. This ridge may not be as strong as we
previously thought and the persistent eastern trough may return more
quickly than we thought. Still, things will be hot through Sunday,
and mainly dry. It will remain dry at least through Saturday and
pretty much through Sunday. There could be an isolated storm Sunday,
with better chances as we move into the new work week.

LAST BEACH WEEKEND: Some lucky folks are grabbing a beach weekend
right before school starts back, and the weather looks like it will be
fine over the weekend. Sunny skies on Saturday and only isolated
storms on Sunday. It looks like storms will be more plentiful as we
turn the page into Monday and Tuesday. But as I always say, even a
rainy day at beach beats just about any day anywhere else.

TROPICS: The Bermuda high is not exceptionally strong this season.
This has led to a weaker set of trade winds over the tropical Atlantic
and slow poke tropical waves moving westward at 10-15 knots instead of
the more usual 15-20 knots. This tends to allow the waters to be
warmer because of less upwelling, and sea surface temperatures are a
little above normal. But dry air keeps putting the kibosh on any
waves that try to get their act together. One is about 700 miles
east of the islands this morning. Chances are low that it will
develop into a tropical cyclone. In the Pacific, Felicia will
affect the big island of Hawaii on Monday as a depression or weak storm.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 186: August 17th will be the 40th anniversary
of Hurricane Camille hitting the Mississippi Coast. I need a couple
of survivors or civic officials from one of the towns along the coast
like Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, Waveland or Biloxi. If you know
of such a person, would you contact me atbill.murray@theweathercompany.com
?

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: After weakening near Haiti and Jamaica,
Hurricane Allen was again strengthening and a minimum pressure of 899
mb (26.55 inches) was recorded by a NOAA aircraft on the 7th when it
was off the Yucatan Peninsula. Only Hurricane Gilbert with the all
time low pressure reading of 888 mb in 1988, and the infamous Labor
Day hurricane of 1935 with a central pressure of 892 mb were lower
than Allen's 899 mb central pressure. With 1979's Hurricane Frederic
still fresh on their minds, emergency managers and residents along the
Gulf Coast were already fretting about Allen. The bridge to Dauphin
Island was still out, and evacuation measures were already being
considered.

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Thursday August 6, 2009
===================================================================

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover.

...Summer-Like Afternoons...

DRY WEATHER THROUGH SUNDAY: The heat came back, so we are having
summer-like afternoons with temperatures climbing into the 90s. The
mornings are fairly decent. We look for mostly sunny weather through
most of the weekend, but a change will start taking place early next
week. We believe some scattered thunderstorms will start showing up on
Monday, especially in the afternoon and then a return to typical
August weather for Tuesday and Wednesday with scattered thunderstorms
each day. That means our hot temperatures in the low to mid 90s into
the weekend will back off to what they should be this time of August
with highs Tuesday through midweek closer to 90. It is too early to
determine how much rain we will get out of those showers and
thunderstorms.
Drier air spread across North and Central Alabama yesterday and that
brought some pleasant temperatures overnight. Remember, dry air cools
better at night, but heats better in daytime. In NE Alabama, it was 62
this morning in Broomtown, 63 in Crossville and Scrougeout, 65 in
Decatur and Ft. Payne and 66 in Cullman and Lafayette.

AT THE BEACH: This could be your last chance to go down to Gulf
Shores, Orange Beach, Destin or you name it before school gets well
underway next week. The weather will not be that bad all the way
through the weekend with highs each day close to 90. Mostly sunshine
for Friday, a slight chance of an afternoon storm on Saturday, and
about a 30% or 40% chance on Sunday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The National Weather Service has lowered their
expectations about the number of tropical storms or hurricanes in the
Atlantic Basin this season. Part of it is due to El Nino, but they
caution that even an El Nino year we can still have strong hurricanes.
Originally they had forecast 9 to 14 named storms. That has been
lowered to 7 to 11. They estimate 3 to 6 of them will become
hurricanes with 1 or 2 major hurricanes. There is nothing going on in
the Atlantic Basin at this time.

BLISTERING HEAT: We have mentioned several times about the Phoenix
heat wave and their hottest July ever. Las Vegas is in there competing
as well. So far in August, their high has averaged 106 and low in the
mid 80s. So far this season, record warm low temperatures have
occurred 13 times. The month of July was the fourth hottest July since
records began in 1937. The hottest and the
coolest in the last 24 hours was in the same state—California. 118 in
Death Valley and 37 this morning at Truckee.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Received a very pleasant e-mail
yesterday from Kate Aument from Henderson, Nevada. That is just SE of
Las Vegas on the way to Boulder City. She reminded me that section is
having plenty of heat also. She had very kind remarks about the Little
Miss Molly stories. We have been absolutely amazed how this one
paragraph that I write each day has created hundreds and hundreds of
fans of Little Miss Molly. We have received e-mails from not only
Nevada, but Utah, Indiana, Illinois, and even Northern Ireland just to
name a few. Wish you could have seen that little girl at bedtime last
night. I woke her up for a brief outside bathroom break. When she came
back in, she was only half awake and so sleepy that she just sat in
the floor and stared. I gave her a midnight treat. She would not eat
it right away and took it to bed in the king-size bed to try to push
it under a pillow for safekeeping. She is a smart little animal. Life
goes on.

The dreaded 594 dekameter heat bubble it about to set up shop over the
Southeast U.S. That number refers to how high above the surface we
have to go to have our barometer drop to 500 millibars. Hotter air is
thicker, so when the 500 mb height gets up to around 5,940 meters
(around 19,500 feet), it's gonna be hot, hot, hot…

TRENDING TO DRIER/HOTTER: Actually, we have been pretty lucky with
rainfall and cooler than average temperatures lately, so a little hot
weather won't be a bad thing, as long as it doesn't wear out its
welcome. Many areas will see middle 90s through Sunday before the
ridge breaks down enough to allow for some cooler conditions and
scattered storms.

NEXT WEEK: The surface high will shift off the East Coast by Monday,
allowing for a return southerly flow to set up over Alabama. This
means scattered showers and storms will return to the forecast by
Monday and Tuesday. Expect fairly typical summertime fare for the
remainder of next week with highs near 90 and lows in the middle 70s.

TROPICAL FORECASTS DOWNGRADED: The experts out at Colorado State
University have lowered their forecast for the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane
season to ten named storms, four hurricanes (two of which will become
major hurricanes.) The increased wind shear from a developing El Nino
was cited as the cause. The new numbers were a downgrade from the 11,
5 and 2 on their last update.

TROPICS: The latest first hurricane since 1953 was in 1977, when
Hurricane Anita waited until August 29th to get going. I am confident
that Ana will not wait that long. We are getting into the heart of the
Cape Verde part of the hurricane season, and we are seeing the eastern
Atlantic moisten up now after weeks of dry air have covered this area.
You will see a string of tropical waves move off the African coast and
steam westward. Their eventual track will be steered by the Bermuda
high, which has been displaced to the east a bit, hopefully keeping
any storms away from the U.S. East Coast. The current disturbance in
the Central Atlantic has struggled with the dry air and doesn't pose
much of a threat to become a tropical depression. In the Pacific,
Hurricane Felicia could affect Hawaii by next Monday, but it should
weaken to a depression by then.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: This week's guest is author Abby
Sallenger, talking about his book on the Last Island Hurricane of
1856. WE will record the show Monday night. After that is our
Hurricane Camille Anniversary Special on the 17th, Ivor van Heerden
will talk about Katrina on the 24th and Tom Skilling will be the guest
WeatherBrain on the 1st. We signed up Les Lemon yesterday for an
October visit and Mike Smith, the President of WeatherData will be on
in November. He will talk about why the warning system isn't broken,
and how to improve it in November. Subscribe for free on iTunes or go
to www.WeatherBrains.com where all the archives and a free player are
located. Get show info on Twitter.com @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: Record heat in the East. The reading of 106F at
Washington DC is their all time record high temperature. Cumberland MD
and Keedysville MD set their all time record high temperatures also
with 109F. Other all-time record high included Richmond VA (107F).
Philadelphia PA recorded their most uncomfortable day ever with a heat
index reading of 125 degrees.

...Gradually Getting Hotter...

DISCUSSING ALABAMA: Last night it looked for a time like we would
come under a severe thunderstorm watch, at least down into parts of
North Alabama. Early today the NWS/Storm Prediction Center had most of
Alabama under a Slight Risk for today from about Cullman southward.
Early this afternoon they updated that to mention a Slight Risk only
over the south half of the state.

The big cluster of thunderstorms last night that rolled down from West
Tennessee saw a curve to the right and went down through Mississippi
leaving most of Alabama high and dry. The atmosphere has been more
stable over the north today. At midafternoon, there were very few
showers over the north half of the state, but some scattered ones down
south.

SO WHAT IS AHEAD: Here in Central Alabama we believe thunderstorms
will be relatively scarce all the way through the weekend—maybe a 1 in
5 chance on most afternoons. The old thermometer is going to become
agitated and climb into the mid 90s all the way through the weekend.
Some places in West Alabama may heat up as much as 95 or 97.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: We still do not see any hope for the
first named storm of the season in the Atlantic Basin for the next
few days. Her name will be Ana. Meanwhile, over in the Pacific, there
were several named storms underway.
Better hurry if you want to take a beach trip before school starts in
earnest. Looks pretty good for the next several days along the Alabama/
NW Florida beaches. There will at least be a chance of an afternoon
thunderstorm every day, but not all day rain. Afternoon high
temperatures will hang close to 90.

ROAMING THE COUNTRYSIDE: Surely everyone knows about the historic
flash flood in Louisville yesterday. Official records at the airport
show 4.53 inches of rain for the 24 hours ending this morning. There
were other reports of as much as 6 inches of rain in about 90 minutes.
In Indianapolis, there were 3.81 inches and Paducah had 2.12. Other
cities with over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours included 1.64 in
Lexington, Kentucky, 1.08 in Nashville and 1.16 in Orlando. It was 117
yesterday in Death Valley. Even though we are in the heart of summer,
people in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan probably had a light
jacket on this morning. It was 38 in Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin plus
several locations in Upper Michigan. Some wildfires have broken out in
the drought area of South Texas. The heat parade continues in Phoenix.
They have had at least 37 days in a row of high temperatures over 100.
Austin is expecting 103 this afternoon and 102 tomorrow. They are very
dry.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My Little Miss Molly was so exhausted
late last night. I took her to the king-size bed, put her down on a
folded quilt and covered her except for her head. Our big bedroom
stays cooler than the rest of the house. Before I could even leave the
room, she was sound asleep and did not move until almost 10:00 this
morning. She woke up and did a record long stretching, scratching and
bathing her front paws. Animals are so interesting to watch. I wish I
had much more time to spend with that little girl. Life goes on.

...Stormy Weather...

A northwesterly flow aloft on the back side of the eastern trough has
lived up to its reputation since yesterday, producing a couple of
powerful thunderstorm complexes that migrated southeastward towards
Alabama. The storms weakened a bit before reaching Alabama, but not
before bringing 70 mph wind gusts to parts of middle Tennessee.

MORE STORMS TODAY: Additional showers and storms will develop this
afternoon. Some of those could be strong to severe again.
Temperatures should warm into the lower 90s generally. We could see
another storm complex overnight, bringing another round of storms with
high winds and heavy rain.

THURSDAY: Thunderstorms may still linger into Thursday morning, with
clearing around lunchtime. It will be warm and muggy, with highs
topping out around 90 degrees.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: High pressure will begin to build in at the
surface by Friday, putting a stop to the Northwest Flow, although
scattered afternoon storms will be in store. High temperatures will
heat back up into the lower and middle 90s as we heard into the weekend.

TROPICS: A tropical wave about 1,200 miles east of the southernmost
Windward Islands has been the best looking disturbance of the year so
far in the Atlantic. This system could slowly develop over the next
couple of days as it steams west northwestward. It does need to
separate itself from the ITCZ, that band of disturbed weather just
north of the equator. It is in an area of very low wind shear and sea
surface temperatures are slightly above normal in the area where the
disturbance is located. The GFS and Canadian models do develop a
tropical cyclone this week and carry it to a point north of the Lesser
Antilles late in the weekend, steering it around the periphery of the
Bermuda High, which is fairly far east for this time of year.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 185: Already looking forward to our guest for
August 10th. He is Dr. Abby Sallenger, author of Island in a Storm,
about the 1856 Last Island Hurricane that hit the Louisiana coast. He
will explore the fascinating story of this category four hurricane
that struck a vulnerable, exclusive resort, literally without warning.
Get the latest daily news and notes about the podcast that's all about
weather by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains. Learn about future
guests and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Hurricane Allen was one of the most intense
hurricanes ever observed in the Atlantic. On this date, the hurricane
reached Category 5 status for the first of 3 times during its long
path across the Atlantic as reconnaissance aircraft measured a 911 mb
pressure in the eastern Caribbean while south of Puerto Rico. Later
this day, Allen would slash across Haiti, ruining much of the
country's coffee crop and killing 220 people. Follow my weather
history tweets. I am wxhistorian at Twitter.com.

..Ole Thermometer Rising...

THE ALABAMA STORY: For the next two days at least, we will turn our
attention toward the north and NW to see if we can find any clusters
of strong thunderstorms that decide to turn right slightly and head
toward Alabama. The upper air pattern has aligned itself again to
where there is a decent possibility of that. These type weather
situations are difficult to forecast accurately, because we do not
always know the exact angle that they enter a state.

There were big groups of thunderstorms today from Missouri to
Kentucky. These were moving mostly eastward during the day, but this
afternoon they were also building a little more southeastward. We
believe that big group of storms will probably affect areas NE of
Alabama. There may be some outflow boundaries that could reach Alabama.

SO WHAT ARE EXPECTING FOR ALABAMA? We think there could be a slight
risk of a thunderstorm later this afternoon and this evening.
Ingredients are favourable for one or two of those to be on the strong
side. For Wednesday, we are expecting some scattered thunderstorms
mostly in the afternoon and then on Thursday most of them during the
morning in North Alabama and sinking southward during the afternoon.
The old thermometer will heat up by this weekend with mid 90s Friday
and Saturday, but only a small risk of a thunderstorm on those two days.
This afternoon some storms were beginning to develop over East/Central
and Central Alabama. Those will be increasing a bit as the
afternoon goes on. Temperatures had reached the lower 90s over most of
the state.

A GENUINE BONA FIDE FLASH FLOOD: It happened today in Louisville and
a number of other Kentucky counties and adjacent areas. Massive flash
flooding has occurred with numerous water rescues and numerous roads
and highways impassable. Even I-65 was closed in downtown Louisville
after 5 inches of rain fell in only 90 minutes. The mayor of
Louisville said that parts of the city got 6 inches of rain in one
hour. In the midst of all that, severe lightning set an apartment
building on fire near I-64. The whole area was also under a Severe
Thunderstorm Watch. The rain rate in Louisville today may have set an
all-time record for such a short time.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: In Phoenix it was 114 yesterday and a low of 93 this
morning. They expect 114 today and 115 tomorrow. If that happens, that
means about 37 days in a row have had highs above 100 and most days
well above 100. The average high for the first three days of August
was 112. Austin was expecting 102 today in the midst of a severe
drought with over 100 for the next several days. A couple of cool
notes: 38 in Truckee, California this morning and 39 in Yellowstone
National Park and Big Piney, Wyoming.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: The Atlantic shows no signs of helping
Ana to develop. However, there was a tropical wave 100 miles WSW of
the Cape Verde Islands. The NHC says little chance of it doing
anything in the next couple of days. Relatively good weather for the
beaches of Alabama and NW Florida. They will have scattered
thunderstorms Wednesday, but fewer in number for the latter part of
the week with highs in the lower 90s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Ten people in our abode yesterday and
overnight, including two baby great grandchildren. Little Miss Molly
not only had to miss her ballgame, but t was almost impossible for her
to take a nap. She gets a lot of exercise in a situation like this.
She is constantly walking trying to stay out of the way of everybody.
Sometimes the babies will chase her and that makes her a little
uneasy. Her big retreat is our king-sized bed at night that she seems
to welcome. Life goes on.

...Heating Up...

Showers and storms were as scarce as hen's teeth across North and
Central Alabama on Monday. A couple of illegal ones, as J.B. calls
them, did pop up during the strong heating of the afternoon, but they
quickly died off.

STORMS TODAY? We remain in a northwesterly flow aloft, on the back
side of the retreating East Coast trough. This could very well allow
some thunderstorms to roll into Alabama from the northwest, so be on
the lookout for that possibility. But we aren't certain that will
happen. We will start off sunny and temperatures will soar into the
lower and middle 90s fairly quickly. If we don't get a storm complex,
I think any other storms that form will be isolated at best.

REST OF THE WEEK: We will look to the northwest again tomorrow for
the best chance of storms. If a complex does not materialize, then
storms should be isolated again. By Thursday, there are signs that
shower and storms chances will go up. By Friday, the pattern will
change, as a large upper level high pressure system develops over the
southeastern United States. At the same time, the subtropical high
over the Atlantic will be shoved back toward Florida, allowing for a
typical summertime flow and conditions here.

BEACH FORECAST: For the next seven days along the beautiful beaches
of Alabama and Northwest Florida…fairly typical August fare…partly
cloudy skies…only a slight chance of a daily thunderstorm…10-12 hours
of sun each day…lower 90s for highs…mid 70s for lows…decent southerly
wind and sea breeze…1-2 foot waves…warm seawater…

JUPITER'S BLACK EYE: Am I the only one concerned that scientists and
astronomers still aren't sure what hit Jupiter two weeks ago? The
uncategorized, untracked quarter mile wide object struck the planet on
July 19th. If something like that hit the earth, there would be a
tremendous impact. If it landed in an ocean, there would be a
devastating tsunami. On land, the explosion would eject a tremendous
amount of material into the atmosphere. Unthinkable.

HOMEWORK: Our goal as meteorologists is to deliver the best
forecasts and warnings that we can. Having said that, the end users
of our products are a diverse group. It is critical that we
understand their needs and how they like their weather information
delivered. We will be spending a lot of time over the next several
months on the socials sciences side of our business, trying to
understand how meteorology can work hand in hand with the
psychologists and sociologists to improve our product. Hop over to
the blog at www.AlabamaWX.com today and answer a few questions if you
don't mind…

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Dallas Texas finally saw its incredible string
of 42 straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees broken on this
date. There would be 18 more 100 plus days in August and 4 more in
September. The month of July was the hottest ever in the Big D.
There would be no measurable rain in the month at Dallas. The
tremendous heat wave and drought that summer killed 1200 people across
the nation. Losses reached $200 million. Follow my weather history
tweets @wxhistorian.

...It Is Still Summertime...

TYPICAL EARLY AUGUST: Do not forget that we are still well within the
summer season even though we have passed the zenith in mid-July and we
are now on the downside. Even so, you can expect very little relief
from the heat for the rest of August, because it is one of our three
prime summer months. For example, in mid-August 1995, we had 7 days in
a row with temperatures 100 or higher and 5 such days in August 1990.
If you take long-term records to go by, in most years the hottest part
of the summer will be from July 15 through August 15 and then a very,
very gradual cool down. The next several days will see highs across
Central Alabama in the low to mid 90s, mostly between about 90 and 93.
This time of year, even when the weather models do not say so, we can
always have an isolated thunderstorm pop up during the afternoon. We
look for a small chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow. We should have a
slightly enhanced chance of showers and storms on Wednesday and then
wider scattered ones through the next of the week, mostly during the
afternoon.

One of our more trusted weather models on the morning run indicated
that a high-pressure area aloft would be growing a bit stronger
centered over New Mexico that will turn the winds aloft over Alabama
more out of the NW and we could have one of those pesky thunderstorm
clusters trying to come down this way at midweek. That is not certain
at all. We will just have to watch it.

JULY WAS GOOD TO US: Let us use the official weather records at
Anniston Airport to explain that. We could have blistering heat in
July with some highs well over 100, but this July in Anniston had 17
of the 31 days where the high temperature could not even reach 90. In
addition, 14 of the 31 days had measurable rain. Those figures are
fairly representative of a wide strip of Central Alabama.
Showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday gave some good amounts
of rain to several areas. A few samples:

1.56 in Huntsville
1.15 Russellville
2.25 Cedar Bluff
2.52 Hartselle

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: No need to talk about tropical, because
everything is still quiet in the Atlantic Basin. Along the Alabama/NW
Florida coast, fairly good weather all the way through Friday with
about a 1 in 5 chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day. Quite a
bit of sunshine. High temperatures mostly around 92.

HEAT BURST: I have always been extremely fascinated about those.
Thanks to an e-mail from Justin Cook, an intern with KCRG-TV in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa, they had one very early this morning. Winds gusted as
high as 74 mph. The temperature zoomed upward from 73 to 84 in just a
short time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly does not like the rain
at all. Even when only a light rain is falling, if I take her out to
go to the bathroom, she either does it very quickly or not at all and
does a 180 right back into the house. Even if she only got a little
bit wet, I wish you could see her using the carpet as a bath towel.
She turns the front part of her body, including her head, upside down
while keeping her rear end upright and pushes herself all the way
across the living area. She will do that several times even before
asking for her treat. She had a delightful walk this morning with
little Dino, the Yorkie, that she loves dearly. Life goes on. J. B.

...Hotter and Drier This Week...

James is on vacation this week, and it takes three of us to do the
work of one super weatherman. There are videos and podcasts, and
forecast packages and emails, Web postings and radio all over the
country. We all hope that he and his family have a great time this
week at Walt Disney World.

STARTING OFF THE WORK WEEK: A week frontal boundary lies across South
Central Alabama this morning. This front brought clearing skies to
the northern half of the state overnight. Some patchy fog formed
since low level moisture is still fairly plentiful. Showers and
storms will be limited to South Alabama today, although we can't rule
out an isolated shower somewhere over Central sections of the state.
Highs today will return to more respectable summer levels, topping out
in the lower 90s. Lower to middle 90s will be the norm through
Wednesday as a surface high tries to control Alabama's weather. There
could be a thunderstorm complex passing in the northwest flow late on
Wednesday, but it's kind of early to be specific.

LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK: There are now indications that a strong
bubble of high pressure will build over the southeastern United States
late in the week into the weekend. Only scattered storms will form
each day, and highs will warm well into the 90s each day. Lows will
be in the lower and middle 70s.

WET START: 3.70 inches of rain had fallen through 10 a.m. Sunday in
Huntsville. That's the wettest start ever to the month of August
there. Their year to date rainfall is at 40.66, the second wettest
in this decade. Parts of West Central Alabama's Marengo, Perry,
Dallas, Wilcox and Lowndes Counties may have picked up in excess of 3
inches since Saturday morning.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 184: Storm chaser extraordinaire Dave Hoadley
was our special guest on WeatherBrains episode 184 Friday night. You
can hear his views on chasing in the Southeast, storm chasing tours,
his personal forecast method, how he got started and why his daughter
wouldn't chase with him for 15 years. Get the latest daily news and
notes about the podcast that's all about weather by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains
. Learn about future guests and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: On this date, Hurricane Erin was nearing the
coast of the Florida Panhandle. The hurricane had emerged into the
Gulf Mexico the previous day after crossing the Florida Peninsula. By
early morning, Erin's sustained winds reached 100mph in a small area
near its center. A 98-mph wind gust was observed at Mary Esther Field
and Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The storm came ashore near Pensacola,
Florida later that morning causing six fatalities and an estimated
$700 million damage. The barrier island stretching from Pensacola
Beach to Navarre Beach absorbed the brunt of the storm as it came
ashore. Sustained winds of 94 mph and gusts up to 103 mph were
measured at Pensacola during the height of the storm. More about it

...Trending Toward Drier and Hotter...

After a period of wet weather during the past week, patterns are
changing that will allow hotter and drier conditions to return to
Central Alabama.

SHOWERS AND STORMS: Showers and thunderstorms are expected to fire
again with afternoon heating across Central Alabama, mainly along and
south of I-59. A weak cool front will settle into central sections of
the state overnight, where it will go to die. Expect some patchy
dense fog overnight tonight, with little change in temperature from
the past few nights.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Storms will be pushed to the south for Monday
through Wednesday as the front fizzles. It will be trending hotter,
with more typical summertime highs in the 90s across our area.
Another approaching front will stir up a few more showers and storms
by Thursday and Friday, with rain chances back down in the slight
category by the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: The persistent trough over the East Coast of the
United States shows no signs of letting up over the next ten days,
although there are signs it may weaken in about two weeks. This
trough would serve as a significant protector against East Coast
tropical storms. Its persistence might lead one to believe that it
could be a fairly consistent feature into September, which would be a
good thing. But shear is relaxing, water temperatures are a little
above normal and rising and the dry Saharan air should be going away.
We still could see an average Atlantic hurricane season before it is
over. There is a decent disturbance in the eastern Atlantic, south
of the Cape Verde Islands. It is still in the vicinity of all that
dry, dusty Saharan air. It probably won't develop until it outruns
that.

TORNADO FATALITIES: We have had a very good year in the tornado
fatality department. So far, there have been 21 tornado deaths in the
U.S. this year. This compares favorably to 35 through the same period
last year, a year that saw us finish at 38. 2007 saw 81 tornado
fatalities. If we could hold at 21, it would be the second fewest
tornado deaths since modern tornado records began in 1950.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Air France Flight 358, an Airbus A340-300, was
on approach to Toronto's Rearson International Airport. A severe
thunderstorm warning was in effect for the city. It had been a rough
weather day, and the airport had been closed several times. As the
plane landed in windy, rainy conditions, the plane overran the end of
the runway and broke into pieces in a ravine. All 309 passengers and
crew escaped before the plane exploded in flames and burned. Only 43
people were injured, and the injuries were described as minor.
Several factors were initially listed as having probable cause in the
flight. Wind shear was possibly a problem. Hydroplaning on the
runway could have been a problem. There were repos that lightning may
have struck the plane as it was landing. Other reports said that the
crew had overshot the landing zone and did not have time to stop.
Discussions after the incident indicated that the gully at the end of
the runway needed to be filled in to provide a longer safe zone. If
you enjoy historical weather information, follow my weather tweets. I

===================================================================

Doppler radar estimated rainfall data indicates that about 70% of
North and Central Alabama received rainfall on Sunday. As has been the
case for much of this week, there were some winners, and some folks
that probably felt they got cheated in the rainfall department. The
short term rainfall needs were looking good after this week's rains,
except in parts of Northeast Alabama. Luckily, that area got some
beneficial rains yesterday. Hopefully, we will have erased all
abnormally dry areas on the drought monitor.
FOR YOUR SUNDAY: More rain will fall today as showers and storms
develop ahead of an approaching cold front. Rainfall amounts should
average around three quarters to one inch of rain, with locally higher
amounts. Some folks will likely get skunked as well. Highs today will
range from the middle 80s to near 90, depending on cloud cover and
precip.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The boundary will settle into North Central Alabama
over the next 24 hours and become diffuse. As surface high pressure
builds into the area, showers and storms will become scarce, and
temperatures will be heating up. Highs will warm back to just above
seasonal averages, mostly in the lower 90s. Humid lows will be in the
70s. The long range look keeps this trough over the eastern United
States in the 8-15 day time frame along with high moisture levels,
keeping our weather slightly unsettled.

BEACH FORECAST: It's the last week before school starts back for many
kids across Central Alabama, and for some, that means a last minute
trip to the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida. While
we can't promise perfect weather, you still can expect 6-8 hours of
sunshine each day, with the potential for a thunderstorm or two.

PERSEIDS: It's that time of year again. Time for the annual Perseids
meteor shower. Earth is beginning to move through debris from t he
comet Swift-Tuttle at this time, so watching for shooting star will
get a lot more interesting over the next couple of weeks, peaking on
the night of August 11th, into the early morning hours of August 12th.
Then you could see dozens of shooting stars per minute.

WEATHERBRAINS: Dave Hoadley was one of the first storm chasers. He
started way back in 1956, when getting data meant heading to the
nearest National Weather Service Office to talk to a forecaster. Dave
is probably the oldest living stormchaser now, and he still does it
every year. He was the guest on WeaterBrains last night. Hear the show
at www.WeatherBrains.com, or subscribe on iTunes. Get information
about the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A tragedy in the mountains of Colorado east of
Alamosa. A father and son had just reached the summit of Little Bear
Peak when an approaching thunderstorm began produced several close
lightning strikes. As they hurried down the mountain, the father
stepped on some crumbling wet rocks and fell 500 feet to his death.
