It seems that we will be heading into a wetter pattern over the next few
days, thanks to a cold front to our north. The front will approach the
northern border of Alabama tomorrow night. In advance of the front, storms
will form. The timing of the front will be critical as always as to where
the storms fire tomorrow. And, if the storms fire during the afternoon
hours, they could be on the strong side again.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: At the surface, our cold front extends across the
central part of the country, anchored by low pressure over southeast
Michigan and northeast Oklahoma. The weak low that we have been tracking
just off th East Coast all week in near Jacksonville, bur its chance to
strengthen may have passed.

TONIGHT: Any isolated storms that do form will quickly die down overnight,
leaving fair skies and muggy conditions. Overnight readings will drop into
the lower and middle 70s.

SUNDAY: The day may get off to another partially cloudy start, but sunshine
should return fairly quickly. Thunderstorms may sag down into North
Alabama. Those storms should increase by late afternoon or early evening.
Some of them could become strong.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: The front will slowly push across North Central Alabama
Monday morning. As it does, it will enhance our shower and thunderstorm
chances. The front should hang up somewhere across Central Alabama. As
ripples pulse along the stationary or nearly stationary, shower and storm
chances will remain high through Wednesday. It does appears that the front
might get enough of a nudge to push south of our area by Thursday.

NATIONALLY: The return flow on the back side of the upper level low over
the southern Unite States continues to transport a plume of copious moisture
into New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle and southwestern Kansas. Flash flood
watches continue across these areas. Drought continues across a wide area
of the country, including Arizona, the Central Plains, Texas/Oklahoma and
the Southeast, including parts of Alabama. High fire danger will exist this
week over much of the West and Texas and Oklahoma during this week ahead.

ON THIS DATE IN 1955: Extreme flooding over New England was the result of
torrential rains from Tropical Storm Diane which followed on the heels of
Tropical Storm Connie the week before. 18.15 inches of rain fell in
Westfield MA in 24 hours. 40% of Worcester MA was under water. The
Blackstone River in Woonsocket RI swelled to a width of 1.5 miles.

...Another Hot One...

Thunderstorm activity was nearly non-existent on Friday as high pressure
aloft kept a lid on the atmosphere. With a good deal of sunshine,
temperatures soared into the 90s at all locations. Look for more of the
same today, with temperatures once again rising well into the mid 90s under
mostly sunny skies. Only a few clouds will form by afternoon. Chances of
any cooling showers will be nearly nil again today.

FRONT IN OUR FUTURE? A wavy frontal system extends across the mid-section
of the country this morning. For the time being, it is being held in check
by the upper level ridge of high pressure over the South. But by tomorrow,
that high will slide to the west and the upper air flow will turn to the
north over Alabama. This will allow the front to slide to the south towards
us. Timing will be everything. It appears that the front will approach
Alabama Sunday evening, producing showers and storms. The front will wander
down into the central part of the state and likely stall. As if usually the
case, how far south it sets up will define our shower and storm chances
until it washes out. For now, we will call for a continued chance of
showers and storms on Monday. There are indications that the best chance of
storms might actually occur on Tuesday or Wednesday. Building high pressure
may push the front to our south by Thursday, diminishing those rain chances.

BEACH BOUND? Only isolated storms today and tomorrow, but clouds and storms
will increase as we head into the new work week. Weekend highs will be in
the middle 90s, backing off a bit by Monday and continuing in the upper 80s
through much of the week.

TROPICS: The low pressure system east of Florida has never gotten its act
together. It should continue southwest and cross the Florida Peninsula over
the weekend and enter the Gulf of Mexico. It will be interesting to watch
as it moves over the warm Gulf waters, but no indications of any development
at this time. There is a mid level disturbance over the western Gulf and a
tropical wave just off the African coast. Note that the GFS tries to
develop some sort of low in the Gulf next week, moving it toward the Florida
Big Bend area.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami
were faced with a dilemma. A reconnaissance plane flying into then Tropical
Storm Andrew could not find a circulation center in the system located a few
hundred miles northeast of Puerto Rico. This meant that the system was
technically not even a tropical depression any longer, but forecasters knew
that the disturbance would be moving into an area that was favorable for
development. So, they were reluctant to downgrade Andrew to a tropical
depression, as that would create confusion. Andrew turned to the west and
strengthened over the next three days, making landfall as a category 5
hurricane in South Florida during the pre-dawn hours of August 24th.

HOPEFULLY SOME RAIN BY LATE WEEKEND: Looks like mostly sunshine for
Saturday with little or no chance for any showers. However, we may see
some scattered thunderstorms by Sunday afternoon and a better chance
on Monday and Tuesday. This is due to another front that should be
approaching NW Alabama by daybreak Sunday. After that it should stall
somewhere between Huntsville and Birmingham Monday and staying there
for a few days and probably becoming hard to identify.

So what does all of this mean? Morning soundings show that
temperatures have warmed aloft as a 500 mb ridge settles in over the
area. It is also very dry aloft, so much so that we believe we can
eliminate any mention of showers tonight and Saturday. This also means
more hot weather with highs in the mid 90s Saturday and Sunday. The
old unfriendly thermometer should back off to near 90 by Monday and
Tuesday due to more clouds and a better chance of thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A low pressure area remains east of Jacksonville.
It has been trying to become a tropical depression for several days,
but the winds upstairs say nothing doing. There could still be some
showers and thunderstorms from this in places like Savannah and
Jacksonville during the next day or two as it moves SW. Meanwhile, on
this date in 1969 powerful hurricane Camille was moving north through
Mississippi after having devastated their coast. I am sure Bill Murray
will comment more on this in his weekend editions. There is also a
current story on the 33/40 weather blog about that mean old lady.

THE WORLD OFWEATHER: Ever wonder why Tucson does not get nearly as
hot as Phoenix even though it is further south? It is the elevation
thing. Phoenix is at an elevation of 1,107 feet while Tucson is at
2,550 feet. Often the high in Tucson will be 6 to 10 degrees lower
than Phoenix. Just outside Tucson is Mt. Lemon at an elevation of
8,210 feet. It is sort of an oasis and can have August lows in the
50s…coldest temperature I could finding the USA this morning was a
hard freeze,21, at Swan Lake, Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little friend had me out at sunrise
this morning. I had just poured my first cup of coffee, but she would
not let me finish. She was insistent. She also demanded that we go the
entire half mile. Sure was a pleasant walk. After our recent rains,
everything is lush and green again. The Old Crow Motel was silhouetted
by the sunrise. There was added beauty to the sunrise because of some
fog and haze and some high level clouds. There is so much in nature to
appreciate, but sometimes you have to frame the beauty as if you are
looking through an imaginary camera lens…Molly has evolved into a new
habit. When she stops to look at something, she raises her right paw
about 2 inches off the ground. Maybe she is a wannabe bird dog. She is
my true friend.

...Hot And Humid Summer...

Hot and humid summertime weather is the story for Alabama today. There is
almost some risk of shower or thunderstorm on any summer afternoon, but we
believe the ones that form today will be isolated due to an upper air ridge
over the region. The warm air aloft prevents most air parcels from rising to
the point where they can grow into showers and storms easily. If you like
the numbers game, the chance of any one spot getting wet today is about one
in ten, and the best chance of those showers will be along and south of
I-20.

THE WEEKEND: Not much change in the weather tomorrow; we are forecasting a
partly sunny sky and a chance of widely scattered afternoon showers and
storms. There should be a general increase in the number of showers and
storms late Sunday as another weak front approaches Alabama from the north.
The mercury has a good chance of reaching the mid 90s tomorrow, with low to
mid 90s likely on Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The surface front will slowly push through North Alabama on
Monday, and we will maintain the chance of scattered showers and storms.
Then, drier air is forecast to slip into the northern part of the state
Tuesday, with most of the showers and storms shifting down to the southern
counties of the state.

TROPICS: A surface low will move into the Georgia coast today. This system
will bring breezy conditions and a few showers and storms to places like
Savannah, Brunswick, and Jacksonville, and we will be watching to see if the
system can maintain some kind of identity as it moves southwest into the
northeast Gulf of Mexico over the weekend.

Another weak surface low is in the Gulf of Mexico, moving southwest toward
the southern Texas coast, with little sign of development. The rest of the
Atlantic basin remains fairly quiet for now.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine for the central Gulf coast this
weekend with a few scattered showers and storms. Daytime highs will be in
the 87 to 90 degree range along the immediate coast. The sea water
temperature at Panama City Beach as of late yesterday afternoon was 87.1
degrees (F).

BAMA HEAT: While an easterly flow kept temperatures down somewhat over the
eastern part of Alabama yesterday, the western counties were heating up
nicely. Tuscaloosa's high (at the Airport) was 96, while our SKYCAM site at
the Demopolis Civic Center in Marengo County reached 94 degrees.

PLAINS HEAT: Highs yesterday included 105 at Dallas/Ft. Worth, 103 at
Oklahoma City and Austin, 102 at San Antonio, and 101 at Fort Smith, AR.

IN SEARCH OF COOL AIR: It is just not there. We had to look all the
way up to the Alaskan coast to find a little light snow at Barrow,
where the early afternoon temperature was 32. In reality, it is too
early for any significant cool spells in Alabama. On October 17, the
normal high and low for Birmingham is 74/51. That is exactly two
months from now, so we can hang on. About that time, we will have some
days where the sky is so blue that it looks like a painting and the
visibility so great that it seems like you could see to Minnesota or
New Mexico. Cannot do that, of course, but it is a delightful time of
the year.

BACK FROM DAYDREAMING: We must be realistic and look for high
temperatures in the mid 90s through most of the weekend. By Monday,
another front should get here bringing the temperature down a few
degrees and give us a better chance of some showers and thunderstorms.
Scattered ones are expected Sunday afternoon also, but until then few
and far between.

THE TROPICAL GAME PLAN: The NHC canceled the Air Force flight into
the disturbed weather area ESE of Charleston this afternoon. There is
still a small window that it could become a tropical depression before
upper level winds become even more unfriendly. Even without a
depression, there should be showers and thunderstorms and gusty winds
from about Myrtle Beach and Charleston southward to Savannah and
Jacksonville. Back in 1969, a very scary scenario was played out in
the Gulf of Mexico 250 miles south of Mobile. Hurricane Camille was
becoming more powerful. Late that day a record low pressure up until
that time of 26.61 inches was found in the center of the storm along
with 210 mph winds. I am sure there will be more extensive stories
about Camille posted on the BLOG in the next day or so.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: There are places in Texas that have had about
33 consecutive days with temperatures 100 or hotter. Dallas was
expecting 105 this afternoon and at least 100 or better all the way
through next Wednesday…cold spots this morning included 31 in Stanley,
Idaho and Wainwright, Alaska…in Birmingham, the largest number of days
in one summer with 100 degrees or hotter was 15 in 1925

SIGNS OF THE SEASON: During the longest days of summer, our sunset
time is 8:01 p.m. and sunrise at 5:36. As of today, we have lost 30
minutes of daylight in the afternoon and 34 minutes in the morning for
a net loss of over 1 hour.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I need to find a detour when I walk
from my office to the kitchen for another cup of coffee or either stop
drinking coffee. There is no way I can make that trip without stopping
for a play session or love session with Little Miss Molly. This
morning I gave her at least 10 belly rubs and cuddling. Net result: I
get behind on my work and have to hurry to meet the deadline. Three
more e-mails in the last day or so urging me to write a children's
book about Little Miss Molly. I sure hope to do that one day. Life
goes on.....

...The Heat Cranks Up A Notch...

Hot weather will be the weather headline through the weekend (after all,
this is August!), with most communities reaching the mid 90s on a daily
basis. Warm air aloft associated with an upper air ridge should keep a lid
on potential afternoon showers and thunderstorms; the ones that do form over
the northern half of the state should be very isolated through Saturday.

The upper air ridge will begin to weaken a bit on Sunday; so afternoon
storms should become more numerous. At this point, it looks like the best
coverage of showers and storms during the next seven days will come on
Monday of next week, with a front will approach from the north.. Then, the
latest model data suggests drier air will filter into Alabama on Tuesday and
Wednesday.

TROPICAL REVIEW: A low pressure center off the coast of the Carolinas has
some potential to develop into a tropical depression today. It will drift
toward the west/northwest, and should be near the southern coast of North
Carolina tomorrow. Upper air winds will be increasing over the system
tomorrow, and that shear should prevent this from becoming a major tropical
cyclone (not to mention the proximity to land). An Air Force reconnaissance
plane flew into this area yesterday, but it was unable to find winds greater
than 25 mph.

Another weak low is in the central Gulf of Mexico; that one should drift
toward the southwest over the next few days in the general direction of the
middle or lower Texas coast. Some slow development is possible. Elsewhere,
the Atlantic basin remains amazingly quiet for mid-August.

HOORAY: We are now past the normal peak of the summer heat in Alabama.
Between July 13 and August 10, the average high is 91, and the average low
is 70.

Now, those values are 90 and 69. No, not a big change, but a sign that fall
will indeed get here one day as we are on the downhill side of summer. By
the first of September, the normal high is 88 and the normal low is 67. If
you really want to look ahead, the average date of the first freeze in
Birmingham is November 8, and the earliest freeze on record came on October
18, 1948 when the mercury dropped to 31 degrees.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The hottest spot and the coldest spot in the
nation yesterday were both in California. Death Valley reached 111 during
the peak of the afternoon heat, while the morning low at Truckee was 84
degrees colder; the minimum there was a frosty 24 degrees. Texas continues
to bake in summer heat; the high in Dallas yesterday was 104, and the
mercury should be close to that level there today and tomorrow. Baton Rouge,
LA reached 99 degrees yesterday, which tied the record high for August 16.
Charlotte, NC was soaked with 1.94" of rain yesterday.

MUCH OF ALABAMAWET DOWN YESTERDAY: During an unusually hot summer,
it is very difficult to keep reins on the old thermometer. We may get
a break occasionally, but the heat seems to come back time and time
again. This has clearly been a hot summer across Alabama, but not one
of historic proportions. And how about that break yesterday when
almost all the southern 2/3 of the state had some very welcome and
beneficial rain, even though we had to contend with an enormous amount
of lightning. Many areas received well over an inch of rain and some
places more than that. The showers and storms were triggered by a weak
front that moved down into the state. That front stalled near Selma
this morning. It will start a slow track northward. It brought enough
drier air to the northern part of the state to let the temperature
fall to a pleasant 66 in Cullman this morning and 67 in Muscle Shoals.

MOBILE FIGHTING BACK: At one time not long ago, Mobile was showing a
rainfall deficiency for the year of around 22 inches. So far in August
the port city has received 5.66 inches of rain and their deficiency
has improved to 18.44. Meanwhile, the Birmingham surplus has built to
5.65 inches. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast
for the Mobile area for the next several days. They will be few in
number over the north part until about the weekend when they will
increase some. Probably the best chance for Central and North Alabama
will be Sunday and Monday.

THE STORY OF THE TROPICS: The NHC is sending an aircraft into the
low pressure area 125 miles SE of the Carolinas. Still a chance of a
tropical depression forming in the next 24 hours. There is also a
small low pressure area over the central Gulf of Mexico about midway
between Havana and the Louisiana coast. No immediate concern.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: You better believe that residents of Topeka
were celebrating a high of only 86 yesterday afternoon. They are
getting a break from the long stretch of 100 plus temperatures. But
further south, it was 105 in Dallas-Ft. Worth and 104 in Waco…the
hottest in Alabama was 100 at Livingston…coldest this morning was 28
at Swan Lake, Montana…we get reports from Poorman and Cyclone,
Montana. I am always fascinated by those place names.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My wife spent the night in the UAB
Highlands Hospital (no problem, just a routine check). When I got home
about 10:00 last night, Little Miss Molly acted like she had not seen
me in weeks. After I gave her a treat, she climbed on the back of the
couch and watched the garage door for several minutes with her tail
wagging slowly. She could not understand why my wife did not follow me
in the door. I took Miss Molly to bed with me , but she would not
stay. Instead, she went back to the couch to sleep and I feel sure she
was still hoping for the other half of this family (her majority
owner) to come home. Life goes on and sometimes I am second fiddle but
I do not mind.

...Dry Air Moves Into North...

This morning a surface boundary (notice we didn't call it a cold front!) is
roughly lined up from near Atlanta to Montgomery and on to Mobile. North of
this front, drier air will settle into the northern half of the state, and
the chance of rain will be very small. Most communities around here will be
dry today, with the showers and storms developing over the southern counties
of Alabama. The drier air will also heat very effectively, most spots will
rise into the mid 90s today, and where there is limited soil moisture some
upper 90s are possible. The old surface front will dissipate tomorrow, and
moisture will slowly work northward. But, an upper ridge over the state will
keep afternoon showers and storms in the isolated category both tomorrow and
Friday. Afternoons will stay hot.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now we will roll with the typical summer formula for the
weekend; hot and humid with morning sunshine and a few scattered afternoon
storms. Highs over the weekend will be generally between 90 and 95 degrees.
Another weak surface front will approach by Monday night and Tuesday of next
week, and that might bring an increased coverage of showers and storms to
the state by then.

TROPICS: An interesting mass of thunderstorms clustered together in the
northern Gulf of Mexico during the day yesterday. While storms fell apart
last night, some slow development of this "backyard" system is possible in
coming days. Steering currents are very weak, and little motion is
expected.Another disturbance is east of Savannah, in the Atlantic, and has
been drifting northward. Like the system in the Gulf, some development is
possible, and slow and erratic motion is expected with weak steering
currents in the region.

STORMS OF SUMMER: Strong to severe thunderstorms moved over much of Alabama
yesterday afternoon and last night. Trees and power lines were blown down in
Marengo, Dallas, Elmore, Randolph, and Autauga counties. One person was hit
by lightning in Tuscaloosa and taken to a local hospital (the injuries were
not considered life-threatening). Rain totals included 1.34" at Trussville,
1.10" at Morris, .95" at Demopolis, .75" at Weaver, .54" at Oxford, .51" at
Crumly Chapel, and .26" at Black Creek (Etowah County). Our total at the ABC
33/40 studio in Riverchase (near the Galleria) was only 0.01".

CHEWING THE RAG: Once again Death Valley, CA was the hot spot in the nation
yesterday with a sizzling 113 degrees. The coldest place yesterday morning
was Bodie State Park, also in California, with a frigid 24 degrees. Hot
weather continues in Texas; the high yesterday at the Dallas/Fort Worth
International Airport was 105. Triple digit heat was as close as Jackson,
MS, where the high was 101 degrees. Hattiesburg reported a high of 103.

NO 100-DEGREE HEAT IN FUTURE: Wish we could say that for the
rest of the summer, but it is far too early. We have had some killer
heat waves in September in years past. Our high temperatures for the
rest of this week and into the weekend will be mostly in the 90-93
degree range, which is plenty uncomfortable but also quite a relief
from our recent 95-100 degree stuff.

A cold front pushed down into NW Alabama this afternoon. As it
interacted with the steam bath air over Alabama, the inevitable
happened—thunderstorms developed. Some of those became strong and
there were even a few warnings. Some widely scattered thunderstorms
may hang around tonight.

By tomorrow, the air should dry out enough, especially over North and
Central Alabama, to restrict thunderstorm activity to only a few in
the afternoon. For the rest of the week, we believe we can broad brush
the forecast and just say widely scattered to scattered afternoon
thunderstorms every day all the way into the weekend.

THE TROPICAL SITUATION: That interesting low pressure area some 300
miles SE of the coast of the Carolinas has become better defined. All
the ingredients may become more favorable for a tropical depression to
form over the next couple of days. Steering currents are lazy and the
movement may be erratic, but it is expected to veer slowly northward.
A recon flight may go into the system, if necessary, tomorrow. To
bring back some old (bad) memories, Tropical Storm Camille quickly
intensified to hurricane status south of Cuba on this date in 1969.
She entered the Gulf of Mexico with winds of 115 mph. She went on to
make history from the Mississippi/Alabama coast to Virginia.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: It is really popping out there this
afternoon, so be careful. In 1985, there was a weird lightning event
near Whitehall, New York. Lightning struck a farmhand. He was revived
by medics, but en route to the hospital, his ambulance was struck by
lightning resulting in a fire and explosion which slightly injured the
medics. The farmhand later died at the hospital.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure have enjoyed some down time with
my little 9-pound friend, Little Miss Molly, in the last 24 hours, but
not as much as I had hoped. It is no doubt that she is a spoiled
little puppy. She does not realize that often I am walking from my
weather office to the kitchen for more coffee. She interprets the
squeak in my office chair as I get up as the opening whistle of a
baseball game. She meets me at the door with a big selection of balls
and that wishful look…Molly will soon be four years old. I can't
believe it. If the next four years is this much fun, I am not sure I
can take it. Life goes on.

...Another Cloudy Start...

We expect to see a general increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms across Alabama today in response to a surface front
approaching from the north. Most of the showers and storms will come after
1:00, and a few communities will see a heavy downpour from the stronger
storms. Before the storms form, the mercury should reach the low 90s.

The front is expected to come to a halt somewhere around I-59 tomorrow, or
along a line from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Fort Payne. Showers should be
hard to find north of that line tomorrow, but scattered ones will continue
to the south. Then, the front dissipates and we should be in a fairly
routine summer pattern for the end of the week and into the coming weekend.
Morning sun, a few scattered afternoon storms, and daily highs in the low
90s, about where we should be in mid-August.

TROPICS: A surface low has formed in the Atlantic, about 150 miles east of
Fort Lauderdale, or just north of the Bahamas. There is a chance a tropical
depression could form there today. Steering currents are very weak, and the
system won't be in a hurry to go anywhere during the mid-week period. A
large percentage of the computer models take this system to the Florida
coast, near Jacksonville, late this week as a tropical storm. Some of those
models want to keep the system moving westward, across the Florida panhandle
(which would mean widespread rain for at least the southern part of
Alabama), but others loop it back into the Atlantic before getting close to
Alabama. This one is going to be difficult to forecast with the lack of
steering currents, but we will sure keep a close eye on it in coming days.

Another strong system is in the far eastern Atlantic near the Cape Verde
Islands; this one should turn north in a day or so and not get close to the
U.S. mainland. It also could become a tropical depression today.

HEAT RETURNS: After two days consecutive days with temperatures below 90
(Saturday and Sunday), Birmingham's official high yesterday was 94 degrees.
The hottest place in the state was Muscle Shoals with 96. In contrast, parts
of East Alabama remained under the influence of a wedge of cooler (the one
that moved into the state over the weekend), and Auburn's high yesterday was
only 86.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death
Valley, CA with 116 degrees. The community of Wisdom, MT dropped to 28
degrees early yesterday and was the coldest spot in the U.S. Up in Alaska,
Barrow reported a low of 33, followed by a chilly high of 45 degrees. Closer
to home, Mobile's rain total for the month of August is 3.86", but the rain

that true?
