HOPEFULLY SOME RAIN BY LATE WEEKEND: Looks like mostly sunshine for
Saturday with little or no chance for any showers. However, we may see
some scattered thunderstorms by Sunday afternoon and a better chance
on Monday and Tuesday. This is due to another front that should be
approaching NW Alabama by daybreak Sunday. After that it should stall
somewhere between Huntsville and Birmingham Monday and staying there
for a few days and probably becoming hard to identify.
So what does all of this mean? Morning soundings show that
temperatures have warmed aloft as a 500 mb ridge settles in over the
area. It is also very dry aloft, so much so that we believe we can
eliminate any mention of showers tonight and Saturday. This also means
more hot weather with highs in the mid 90s Saturday and Sunday. The
old unfriendly thermometer should back off to near 90 by Monday and
Tuesday due to more clouds and a better chance of thunderstorms.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A low pressure area remains east of Jacksonville.
It has been trying to become a tropical depression for several days,
but the winds upstairs say nothing doing. There could still be some
showers and thunderstorms from this in places like Savannah and
Jacksonville during the next day or two as it moves SW. Meanwhile, on
this date in 1969 powerful hurricane Camille was moving north through
Mississippi after having devastated their coast. I am sure Bill Murray
will comment more on this in his weekend editions. There is also a
current story on the 33/40 weather blog about that mean old lady.
THE WORLD OFWEATHER: Ever wonder why Tucson does not get nearly as
hot as Phoenix even though it is further south? It is the elevation
thing. Phoenix is at an elevation of 1,107 feet while Tucson is at
2,550 feet. Often the high in Tucson will be 6 to 10 degrees lower
than Phoenix. Just outside Tucson is Mt. Lemon at an elevation of
8,210 feet. It is sort of an oasis and can have August lows in the
50s…coldest temperature I could finding the USA this morning was a
hard freeze,21, at Swan Lake, Montana.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little friend had me out at sunrise
this morning. I had just poured my first cup of coffee, but she would
not let me finish. She was insistent. She also demanded that we go the
entire half mile. Sure was a pleasant walk. After our recent rains,
everything is lush and green again. The Old Crow Motel was silhouetted
by the sunrise. There was added beauty to the sunrise because of some
fog and haze and some high level clouds. There is so much in nature to
appreciate, but sometimes you have to frame the beauty as if you are
looking through an imaginary camera lens…Molly has evolved into a new
habit. When she stops to look at something, she raises her right paw
about 2 inches off the ground. Maybe she is a wannabe bird dog. She is
my true friend.
