GOOD AFTERNOON: See you one week from today at the Storm Alert Xtreme
weather seminar at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. Admission is free
and anyone who has an interest in weather will enjoy it. Brian Peters will
conduct both parts of his excellent SKYWARN training (basic and advanced)
which is critical for anyone who is interested in storm spotting. I will
give some tips on things that I have learned about beginning storm chasing
and share my experiences on the Plains this past spring.

ANOTHER MOSTLY GRAY DAY: For the fourth straight day, skies are mostly
cloudy out there across the area. I played golf yesterday, and I have to
tell you, it was rather enjoyable. Mostly cloudy, mild temperatures, a nice
southerly breeze. I'll take it! But, there isn't hardly any kind of
weather that I don't like. You probably already knew that. There has been
a little bit of sunshine from time to time in some areas, but it has been
spotty. Temperatures were in the upper 60s to lower 70s range in most
locales, with upper 70s by early afternoon in Montgomery.

SPECIAL INTEREST WEATHER: This forecast will cater to a couple of special
interests in the weather community. Lets go group by group.

STORM LOVERS: Our storm fans will enjoy a round of showers and storms
tonight ahead of a cold front. They should enter the northwestern sections
of the state during the evening hours and pass though the rest of Central
Alabama overnight. Some of the storms could be strong, but the chances for
any severe weather will be limited. I was afraid that the showers might
linger well into the morning hours on Sunday, but that does not look as
likely now. I think they will mostly be gone by the time you wake up in
most locations, although they will be a little slower to depart in areas
south of Birmingham. Sunshine will make a return appearance by tomorrow
afternoon, although it will not be in earnest until Monday.

HIGH PRESSURE FANS: High pressure will take control of Alabama's weather
for the remainder of the week. The high will slide down from the Great
Lakes during the week before taking up residence over North Carolina. This
high will act like a huge deflector shield, protecting Alabama from a cold
front over the Plains. All week long, we will experience a mix of sun and
clouds in varying degrees each day. The flow will go from northerly early
in the week to a southeasterly flow by midweek. This will be a relatively
moist flow, and will give us a higher preponderance of clouds, but it should
also be mild and dry. The high will gradually break down by the weekend,
allowing the front to push into Alabama early on Saturday. This will give
us a good chance of showers and perhaps some storms again on Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1920: Famed research meteorologist Theodore Fujita, was
born in Kitakyushu City, Japan Fujita, known as "Mr. Tornado" after
developing the international standard for measuring tornado severity, also
discovered microbursts - sudden, severe downdrafts that can result in 150
mph winds on or near the ground - after studying the starburst patterns of
trees uprooted by tornadoes.

...Showers/Storms Tonight...

GOOD MORNING! Yesterday marked the third straight day that low clouds and
fog hung tough until late in the afternoon over the area. Today will
feature lots of clouds again, but rather than breaking up, they will only
thicken as we go through time today. You will notice a southerly breeze and
temperatures will warm into the middle 70s on average across the area. We
will mention the chance of a shower as we go through the afternoon hours,
but most of the precipitation will hold off until tonight. As a matter of
fact, in Central Alabama, the bulk of the rain may well hold off until late
evening or after midnight. Then a band of showers and thunderstorms will
sweep through the state. Some of those storms could be severe, but the
extent of any severe weather that does occur will be limited and mainly over
Northwest Alabama. Sunday morning will feature cloudy skies with a chance
of showers continuing through the morning hours, perhaps up until lunchtime.
Skies will clear Sunday afternoon, allowing for some late day sunshine.

High pressure will be the watchword in Alabama weather during the coming
week. Northerly winds will continue a cool and dry flow across the Deep
South through Monday. By Tuesday, high pressure will strengthen to the east
of the state. This high pressure will remain in place through much of the
coming week as the upper air flow over the United States locks up in a
blocked pattern. Our temperatures will remain mild through the week,
staying just a tad above normal. The next rain chance will come next
weekend as the high weakens.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Montgomery recorded its ninth record low of the month
as unseasonable chill continued to grip the Southeast.

ECLIPSE FORECAST: The second lunar eclipse of the year will be visible this
coming Thursday night. It will begin at 8:14 p.m. with totality beginning
at 9:23 p.m. The total phase will last 1 hour and 21 minutes. The weather
looks good for eclipse viewing with fair skies expected.

A WEEKEND MIXED BAG: The weather will be in transition over the weekend
across Alabama, but we still believe that most of Saturday will be dry. A
major storm system is swinging out of Colorado into the Plains States. This
will pull a cold front down into Alabama by Sunday. Some showers and
possibly a thunderstorm may start in extreme NW Alabama during the day
Saturday and a few could show up by late afternoon down into Central
Alabama. Our best chance for showers and thunderstorms will be Saturday
night and those should end Sunday morning. Don't look for any big
temperature changes with this cold front. Nights will be a little cooler by
Monday and Tuesday, but for the next five days highs should consistently be
in the mid 70s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Dry weather for tonight's high school games with
temperatures mostly in the mid and upper 60s. On Saturday, Kentucky will be
in Auburn for a 1:30 start. It should be partly sunny and dry with mid to
upper 70s at kick off. Alabama will be in Knoxville for a 2:30 game with
Tennessee. Look for scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm with about
69 at kick off. UAB will be in New Orleans to play Tulane in a 2:30 game. It
should be a warm and humid 85 degrees with only a very small chance of a
shower. I was in error yesterday when I said that game would be in the
Superdome.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots of clouds and showers extending several hundred
miles north and NE of the Leeward Islands, but conditions are not favorable
for development. While hurricanes thin out greatly in late October, they can
still occur. The fourth strongest hurricane in the Atlantic Basin by the
name of Mitch was in its formative stage on this date in 1998.

FRIDAY PROWLS: First, thanks to an alert reader. I mistakenly said Columbus
first saw the North American Continent on October 21, 1492. I should have
said October 12...the weather can be quite variable in Alabama this time of
year. On this date in 1987, there was a good freeze in the Birmingham Metro
area with a low of 28 at Birmingham Airport and 23 in Pinson.this is also
one of the best times of the year for a drought. Among the worst we ever had
was in 1884 when Tuscaloosa was rainless from August 28 through October
22-nearly two months...9 inches of new snow in Flagstaff, Arizona with 2.5
inches at the Grand Canyon Airport...nearly 7 inches fell at Happy Jack
along the Mongollon Rim in the White Mountains...in the Canada Del Oro Wash
NW of Tucson, 4.80 inches of rain in the last 24 hours...cold spots this
morning: 23 at Saranac Lake, New York and Tahoe Valley, California and 9
below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have been dragging my little Miss Molly out
of bed very early the last few mornings, even before she wants to awaken.
She takes it really well and seconds after opening her eyes, her pom-pom
tail is swishing like a funeral home church fan. Away we went this morning
on a half-mile walk when there was barely enough light to see. We enjoyed
walking in the very dense fog and light drizzle...the Old Crow Motel
appeared as a ghostly blur in the fog. We did hear some birds who seemed to
be as happy as we were. Life goes on, foggy or clear. We like it both ways.

...Warm October Weather...

Today will be much like yesterday, with low clouds and fog this morning
giving way to intervals of sunshine later in the day. Temperatures will warm
to near 80 degrees, and the chance of rain for any one spot will stay rather
low.

THE WEEKEND: A storm system will move from the Rockies to just north of
Minnesota during the next 48 hours, and will drag a cold front into the
state tomorrow night. While a late afternoon shower is not out of the
question, we still think the best chance of showers over the weekend will
come from about 6:00 tomorrow evening through 6:00 a.m. Sunday. A few
thunderstorms could be involved, but the chance of severe weather looks
rather low with the best dynamics passing well to the north of Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Dry weather for the high school games tonight with
temperatures mostly in the low to mid 70s.

Auburn hosts Kentucky at Jordan-Hare stadium tomorrow at 1:30. The weather
will be dry and very warm with about 84 degrees at kickoff. There should be
some good intervals of sunshine during the game.

Alabama travels to Knoxville to play Tennessee tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Showers
are possible during the game; the kickoff temperature should be near 69
degrees.

And, down in New Orleans UAB will play Tulane at Tad Gormley stadium at 2:30
tomorrow. The temperature will be around 85 degrees at kickoff with only an
outside risk of a passing thunderstorm during the game.

OCTOBER HEAT: Our weathernet station at Demopolis reached a sizzling 90
degrees yesterday under a sunny sky. McComb, MS had a high of 89, while
Meridian reported 88.

NOT A PRETTY DAY: For the second day in a row, we have been plagued by low
clouds and early morning fog that is stubborn about breaking up. The sun did
come out over West-Central and SW Alabama this afternoon and temperatures
soared into the low 80s as compared to the low 70s over North Alabama.
Look for the fog to redevelop tonight because of a stalled front lying
across the area. We believe the clouds will break up quicker tomorrow than
they did today.

During the night, a cluster of thunderstorms moved SE through West-Central
and South Alabama producing some locally heavy rain. Areas along the
Pickens-Sumter County line may have received over one inch of rain.
When is our next rain? Thanks to an approaching cold front, we should start
getting some scattered showers and possible thunderstorms in Central Alabama
late Saturday. We think most of them will come during the overnight hours
and then end on Sunday morning. We still don't see any big temperature
changes for the next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Kentucky will be at Auburn Saturday afternoon for a 1:30
game. It should be dry and warm with near 84 at kick off. Alabama will be in
Knoxville to play Tennessee at 2:30 Saturday afternoon. They expect some
scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm during the game with a high
near 70. UAB will be in New Orleans to play Tulane and it should be
comfortable and dry in the Superdome.

A BUNCH OF THREE-DOT STUFF: A big winter storm in parts of the west
including some flood-producing rains and heavy snow...in Utah, 10.18 inches
of rain has fallen in the last 4 days at Lava Point in Zion National
Park...in the Cedar Breaks National Monument in South Utah, 32 inches of
snow at the Midway Valley...Alta, in the Wasatch Mountains east of Salt
Lake, reports 44 inches of new snow...places to cool off this morning
include Arctic Village, Alaska with 10 and Berlin, New Hampshire and
Fryeburg, Maine both with 22...looking way back before any of us were born,
fine weather greeted Columbus as he made landfall in the New World on this
date in 1492...that was 512 years ago...on October 21, 1984, Austin was
belted with a huge hailstorm with stones the size of hen eggs causing $14
million in damage.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We saw another rabbit while cruising around the
walking track. It was almost nightfall and we didn't see the little fellow
until we were within 15 feet...boy, did he take off...I sure am glad I saw
him in time, because I accelerated the same time Miss Molly did and didn't
get my head nearly jerked off...lots of playtime with little Miss Molly. I'm
still trying to make up to her. Had to be away again and she always gives us
the saddest look when she knows we're leaving. She tries to put a guilt trip
on us, but as soon as she hears the garage door open when we come home, all
is forgiven. She gets a treat every time we return and that erases any bad
Despite occasional ups and downs, life goes on and we treasure every moment.

...Warm October Weather...

If the sun returns statewide as we expect today, temperatures will
approach 80 degrees in most communities this afternoon, well above the
normal high of 73 degrees for October 21. Warmer air aloft will keep most of
the state dry, but with ample low level moisture we cannot completely
eliminate the risk of a few isolated showers this afternoon.

The situation will remain basically the same tomorrow, with warm and
mostly dry weather in our forecast package.

THE WEEKEND: A strong storm system will move from the Rockies into
southern Canada over the weekend, and will drag a cold front into Alabama.
For north and central counties of the state, it looks like the best chance
of showers will come from late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night and
very early Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon most of the showers will be
down in south Alabama. A few thunderstorms could be involved, but we don't
expect any severe weather with the best dynamics passing well to the north
of us. Rainfall amounts should be in the one-half inch range for most
places.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham has received 45.87" of rain since January 1,
which is about two inches above normal. Keep in mind about ten inches of
that came when Ivan blew through here on September 16.

IVAN DVD: Our DVD called "Face to Face With Hurricane Ivan" is
selling fast. It costs 10 dollars and is available at Compass Bank branches
across Alabama. All of the money goes to the American Red Cross and the
hurricane relief efforts in south Alabama. You might call your Compass Bank

A HUGE BOWL OF SOUP: Yesterday's drenching rain set up the perfect
conditions for widespread dense fog this morning. If you didn't enjoy
morning drive in those conditions, you had plenty of company. The fog
extended all the way from Central Florida westward into Texas and northward
into Eastern Colorado and Minnesota and northeast into Eastern Pennsylvania.
Naturally, the fog lifted across Alabama as the day went on, but the
resulting low clouds were stubborn to break up. We may see some more fog
developing again tonight and a sprinkle is not out of the question. We
should have an increasing amount of sunshine on Thursday and Friday.

OUR NEXT RAIN: As a cold front approaches late Saturday, we should see some
showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Here in Central Alabama we believe
those will occur Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

YESTERDAY'S DOWNPOUR: It seems feast or famine in our rainfall department
lately. After a long dry spell, many areas were inundated yesterday. The
largest amount we found was 6.61 inches at Hackleburg in northern Marion
County. Several roads were damaged in the area from the resulting flooding.

Not far away in the NW corner of Winston County, Haleyville got 5.95. Many
other communities received between 2 and 3 inches such as:

3.87 inches in Jasper
3.14 at Ashville

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave was 900 miles east of the Leeward Islands
this afternoon. The wind upstairs is not favorable for development.

WANDERING AROUND ON WEDNESDAY: Big snows in the mountain west...in the
mountains of Northern Utah, as much as 4 feet may accumulate above 9,000
feet before ending Thursday morning...already 26 inches has fallen at the
Alta Ski Resort...heavy snow also in the Sierra Nevada Mountains...low
temperatures this morning: 21 in Dickinson, North Dakota and 9 above in
Gulkana, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We were out in the soupy fog also this
morning, but traveling from Trussville across town to Hoover and Inverness.
I like a foggy morning and I think little Miss Molly does too. We took a
very early morning walk and the fog was soupy enough to pretty much hide the
upper rooms of the Old Crow Motel...otherwise, I have had to ignore little
Miss Molly for the second day in a row because of lack of time. I woke her
up very early this morning and it is so fun to watch her wake up. She is
happy as can be, even when abruptly awakened. She sticks her rear end up in
the air and her face down on the bed and stretches and yawns repeatedly.
But, she is already wagging her tail so glad to see me. Little Miss Molly
weighs less than 9 pounds, but the pound-per-pound enjoyment that we get is
immeasurable. Don't know what we'd do with a 100-pound dog if the good will
was proportional pound per pound. Life goes on in fog and sunshine. We like
it anyway we get it.

...Drier Air Slips Into Alabama...

After a long day of strong to severe storms and heavy rain, the weather will
be much calmer today across Alabama. While we cannot totally rule out the
chance of a stray shower or storm, many communities will be rain-free, and
we should see a decent amount of sunshine this afternoon. Temperatures will
rise to near 80 degrees, about 5 to 10 degrees above normal for mid to late
October around here.

The weather should be dry and rather warm both tomorrow and Friday as warm
air aloft caps off any shower formation.

THE WEEKEND: A cold front will bring the chance of showers to the northern
half of the state Saturday night and Sunday morning. At this point we don't
expect any really heavy rain or strong storms. By Sunday afternoon the best
chance of rain will shift down into the southern part of Alabama. Still no
unusually cool air in sight for the next five to seven days.

TUESDAY'S SOAKERS: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included: 5.95" at
Haleyville, 3.72" at Cullman, 3.31" at Trussville, 3.17" at Muscle Shoals,
2.83" at Black Creek (Etowah county), 2.66 at Gadsden, 2.58" at
Jacksonville, and 1.89 at Talladega,.

Despite a number of tornado warnings, no major damage was reported across
the state yesterday from the severe storms. There were a number of reports
of hail across Marengo, Dallas, and Lowndes counties. Flash flooding was a
problem in the Tennessee Valley yesterday morning.

DAMAGE SURVEY: The Huntsville NWS office conducted a storm survey yesterday
and determined damage north of Florence Monday evening was caused by an F1
tornado. There were some minor injuries associated with this tornado.
