...Active Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! March didn’t exactly roll in like a lion last week, but things promise to get a lot more active in the coming week as a huge trough of low pressure sets up over the southwestern United States. The Gulf of Mexico will officially open for business for several days and we will enter a wet and stormy weather pattern.

TODAY: But for today, you can expect another nice late winter day. J.B. would remind us that March 1 really is the beginning of meteorological spring, so maybe we should say a nice early spring day. Your call. Anyway, readings should make the middle to upper 60s across the area under a fairly sunny sky. Clouds will thicken overnight as a disturbance passes to our north. It may be accompanied by a few light showers.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature clearing skies. Tuesday will be abundantly sunny. Wednesday will really see the Gulf opening up, with a strong southerly flow and rapidly increasing clouds. A few showers, and maybe a thunderstorm could pup up, but the main activity will be to the west of Alabama, where an outbreak of severe weather is possible.

SEVERE THREAT: Ingredients may come together to produce an outbreak of severe weather here in Alabama on Thursday into Thursday night. Even after the first event passes, the Gulf will still be open for business and we could have another event Saturday or Saturday night.

We are now into our primary severe weather season here in North and Central Alabama and this may be our first significant severe weather threat of the new year. Now is a good time to think about your severe weather plans in case we need them this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: A major wildfire over western Dade County Florida southwest of Miami threatened homes as southern Florida continued in its worst drought in 200 years. Rainfall levels over the 3 year drought period were running 5 feet below normal in some locations. The Florida Aquifer, which supplies most of the potable water was reportedly at its lowest level in history.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Finally, after two straight weeks with a cold, I am beginning to feel well. I came down with the crud Saturday two weeks ago in Atlanta. But there is no rest for the sick, so I was able to work through it, and after a relapse or two, it is finally gone. Hooray!

ACTIVE WEATHER WEEK: An interesting weather pattern is developing across the United States. A very deep trough will be setting up over the western United States this week. At the same time, a sprawling high pressure cell over the western Atlantic will keep the Mississippi Valley and Deep South in a persistently strong southerly flow. This means lots of deep moisture flowing northward from the tropical regions down around Panama. This will serve as the fuel for a series of severe weather events from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama northward across the Mississippi Valley into the Great lakes States. It is a situation that will be interesting to watch as we head through the coming week, as we deal with the threat of severe weather. Additionally, a significant threat of heavy rains and possible flooding may materialize also.

SUNNY SATURDAY: Sunny skies are being reported at every single station in Alabama at the noontime hour. That bright late winter sun is overcoming the import of cold air that is flowing into Alabama on light northerly winds. A few thin, wispy high clouds will be wafting across the sky at times, but should not dull the sunny effect. Temperatures will warm into the lower to middle 60s this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Lows tonight may drop just below 40 degrees as clouds thicken a bit.

SUNDAY: Skies should start off partly cloudy tomorrow morning. They may tend to the mostly cloudy side on occasion during the day. Our winds will become southwesterly ahead of a disturbance that will be passing up and over us. A few light showers may pass through the area tomorrow night, but rainfall amounts will be small.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Weak high pressure will build in behind the lead disturbance, with a good supply of sunshine and seasonable temperatures.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: A big trough of low pressure over the West will begin shooting disturbance out like a big Space Invaders game by Monday afternoon. The first disturbance will bring a severe weather threat to the area from Texas to Missouri on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, a stronger disturbance will swing through West Texas, setting the stage for a severe weather outbreak over the southern Plains over into Arkansas. As this potent disturbance slides northeast, it may bring a severe weather threat to Alabama on Thursday. This is a situation that will have to be watched for us here in Alabama. Even as that low lifts out a much deeper low will be moving northeast across the Plains. This low will deepen to hurricane strength as it starts to move into the Upper Midwest by late Friday. It will push another cold front our way on Saturday, with more showers and storms, bringing a heavy rainfall event with a lesser chance of severe weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The remarkable drought of tornadoes in Oklahoma finally came to an end as an intense low pressure system moving across the Sooner State produced a small F0 tornado near Muldrow in Sequoyah County. Prior to this, the last tornado recorded in Oklahoma was on May 16, 2003. This represented a 292 day streak without a reported twister. The previous record was 248 days, beginning on July 16, 1990 and ending on March 21, 1991.

...Sunny Saturday...

GOOD MORNING: Greetings from Decatur, where I am attending the Austin High School tennis tournament. As I write this late on Friday evening, it is a chilly 39 degrees. I thought that tennis was a warm weather sport?

TODAY/TONIGHT: Temperatures will be right around normal across the area today, with readings topping out in the lower 60s. Overnight lows tonight will be a few degrees warmer than last night, with minimum readings in the middle to upper 30s in most locations.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow will feature partly cloudy skies and temperatures just a tad warmer than those of today. Our winds will shift around to the southwest ahead of a system that will be passing to our north. It will lead to an increase in cloudiness Sunday night with a slight chance of a shower across northern parts of the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Sunshine should return during the day on Monday. High pressure will maintain a hold on Alabama weather Tuesday, giving us sunny skies. Low pressure will be moving out onto the Plains by Wednesday morning. We could see a chance of a shower by then. Showers and storms will be likely Wednesday night and Thursday as intensifying low pressure passes to our north. It appears that strong high pressure parked over the western Atlantic will deflect this low far enough to the north to prevent a widespread outbreak of severe weather.

ROUND TWO: That anchoring high pressure will keep Alabama in a southerly flow. This will keep Alabama in a moist pattern into the weekend. A second, weaker low pressure system will eject into the Midwest by late in the weekend, dragging a slow moving cold front our way. Look for heavy rains, and possible severe weather with this system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Massive snowstorm during President Taft’s Inauguration. Fair weather had been forecast by the U.S. Weather Bureau, which led to great criticism of the service. 9.8 inches of snow in the nation’s capital. Travel and communications were disrupted. It was the largest snowstorm in Presidential Inaugural history.

GREETINGS FROM STARKVILLE: I am writing the afternoon forecast package today from the Southeast Severe Storms Symposium on the campus of Mississippi State University. I am joined by J.B. Elliott, John Oldshue, and Jason Simpson from our team. Today is the broadcasters workshop; tomorrow will focus on a variety of meteorological topics. I am especially interested in a paper prepared by on “Dixie Alley”, which will reveal that we have more strong/violent tornadoes per square mile than the traditional “tornado alley” in the plains. The weather here in Starkville is delightful; cool and dry with a deep blue late winter sky.

This is the fifth symposium put on by our friends here at Mississippi State, and we have enjoyed all of them!

A CHILLY NIGHT AHEAD: With a clear sky, temperatures will drop quickly tonight across Alabama. Most communities will be very close to freezing early tomorrow, but the colder valleys will be in the 25 to 29 degree range by daybreak.

THE WEEKEND: Dry weather continues through Sunday with a slow warming trend. Look for low 60s tomorrow, and mid 60s on Sunday with a good supply of sunshine both days.
Some clouds will slip in here Sunday night and Monday thanks to a passing disturbance, but the chance of significant rain looks very small at this point. Tuesday and Wednesday of next week should feature lots of sunshine with mild afternoon temperatures.

THE LONG RANGE: Some hints of a possible severe weather setup for parts of the mid-south around March 9 (Thursday of next week), but the greatest risk could be just west of Alabama. We have to remember this is the spring tornado season, and stormy times are to be expected.
There are also some hints of a significant late season cold snap around the middle of the month. Beware the Ides of March!

EXTREMES: Coldest spot in the nation this morning was Raco, Michigan with 14 degrees below zero. In contrast, the warmest place yesterday afternoon was Laredo, Texas with a summer-like 97.

WARMEST DAY SO FAR: Yesterday was the warmest day so far this year in Alabama. Both Mobile and Pensacola soared to 82 degrees, a new record high for both cities. Evergreen reported 81, while Tuscaloosa reached 80. Birmingham’s high of 77 was 14 degrees above normal, and not far away from a record high.

MY LITTLE CORNER: J.B. will return on Monday with more adventures of his dog, Miss Molly. J.B. and I were shocked this morning when the annual doughnut table at the Southeast Severe Storms Symposium was gone. Thanks to Mike Brown on the MSU faculty for bringing in a few doughnuts for us. Most years J.B. sucks down doughnuts faster than cars go around the track at Talladega. Tonight, we will enjoy some of the best “home cooking” in the world at Pap’s Place in Ackerman, MS!

...Cooler Air Returns...

Noticeably cooler air returns to Alabama today following the warmest day so
far this year. Tuscaloosa soared to 80 degrees yesterday, while Birmingham's
high was 77, only four shy of the record for March 2. The warmest spots in
Alabama were Brookley Field in Mobile and Evergreen with 81 degrees.
Temperatures today will be at least 15 degrees cooler than yesterday, with
most communities seeing a high near 60 degrees. By tomorrow morning, a light
freeze is likely, and some of the colder valleys might even reach the 20s.

THE WEEKEND: Cool and dry weather will continue through Sunday, with highs
in the 60 to 63 degree range.

A disturbance will bring some clouds to the state early next week on Monday.
A few sprinkles of areas of light rain are possible with that feature, but
rain amounts should be light and spotty. The bottom line is that we don't
expect a big rain event around here for the next seven days.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year is now 14.67", 4.65" above
normal.

DID YOU KNOW? The average date of the last freeze in Birmingham is March 23.
Freezing temperatures, however, have been recorded here as late as April 23.

ROAMING: More summer-like heat in parts of Texas yesterday; Laredo reached
97 degrees and was the hottest place in the nation. Heavy snow fell in parts
of the northeast U.S. yesterday; both Eden and South Wales, New York had 10
inches of snow on the ground last night. Rain continues to fall on much of
northern California; the total in San Francisco yesterday was .48". The long
dry spell continues in Phoenix; they have not had rain for 135 consecutive
days.

COOLING OFF PERIOD: No more of those mid and upper 70s like we had
yesterday for a while. Instead, high temperatures over the next four days or
so will hang close to the 60-degree mark. That is because we will have two
cold fronts moving through here. The first one was moving across the area
this afternoon. The next one will arrive late Sunday night or early Monday
morning.

No bitter cold behind either front, although temperatures will drop
to near freezing early Saturday morning. It will be clearing tonight and
mostly sunshine for Friday and Saturday. Clouds will increase late Sunday
and there may be a slight chance of light rain Sunday night and early
Monday. Unless the weather picture changes, rainfall amounts will be sparse.

MARCH MADNESS: Not basketball, mind you, but the normal behavior of
March weather in Alabama. It can have wide mood swings. It can also be quite
stormy. March is a transition month when Old Man Winter is being pushed out
and Young Lady Spring is trying to move in. Who can forget the Blizzard of
'93 which dumped record snowfall on the state. Right behind that blizzard
was a low of 2 above zero on March 14 at Birmingham Airport. We have had
temperatures as high as 90 as early as March 21 in past history. March is
also our wettest month of the year, if it behaves correctly. We normally get
about 6.10 inches, but in 1980 we got 15.80 inches. March and April combined
are normally our most active for severe weather also.

THE SWINGING THERMOMETER: It happened at Wichita Falls, Texas with
a blistering 98 degrees yesterday afternoon. Tonight's low will be 42, which
is a 56-degree plunge in temperature. Grass fires are still a major problem
in North Texas and Oklahoma.

OUR THURSDAY VISITS: Let's go to Yellowstone National Park where it
should be very pretty now. It was 7 below zero this morning at Old Faithful
with 30 inches of snow on the ground. There is 43 inches at Yellowstone
Lake...far to the south, Hannagan Meadow, in the White Mountains of Eastern
Arizona, got 3 inches of new snow. Take it from me, that is a beautiful
location at an elevation of 9,160 feet...drop down into the lower desert and
Phoenix was cheated out of rain again yesterday, so this is the 135th day in
a row with not a drop...16 below zero at Champion, Michigan was the lower 48
cold spot this morning...a Winter Storm Warning continues for New York City.
They will get 4 to 8 inches of snow this afternoon and tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure will miss Little Miss Molly
while I am in Starkville for the SE Severe Storms Symposium at Mississippi
State University...but you can bet when I get home Saturday night and the
little girl hears the garage door open, she will immediately jump up on the
back of the couch, go to the far end where she can see the garage door and
bubble all over when she sees me. Even if she is sound asleep, she reacts
instantly to us coming home, jumping all over the place. I will give her a
treat, then have a ballgame with her, love her a lot and tuck her away in
bed. Meanwhile, two of our grandkids will be here to keep her company...I
know I shouldn't be that attached (addicted is a better word) to that little
doggie, but I just can't help myself. Life goes on.

...One More Mild Day for Alabama...

For many Alabama communities, yesterday was the warmest day so far in 2006.
Birmingham's official high was 75; the warmest spots in the state (among the
official reporting stations) were Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Evergreen with
a balmy 78 degrees.

We expect the mercury to reach the low 70s today with a partly sunny sky. A
cold front passes through tonight, but only isolated showers are expected.

Following that front, cooler air moves into the state tomorrow and Saturday
with daytime highs closer to 60. Temperatures early Saturday morning will be
close to freezing.

Another front will move through Sunday night or early Monday, and like the
one tonight any showers should be widely spaced and rainfall amounts very
light. Another shot of cooler air moves in here early next week.

MARCH HEAT: The first day of March felt more like the first day of July in
parts of Texas yesterday. Both Wichita Falls and Mineral Wells soared to 98
degrees. Dallas/Fort Worth reported a high of 93, easily beating the old
record of 89. The high in Oklahoma City was 92, another record high for the
date.

MARCH SNOW: A winter storm warning is in effect for New York City today,
where three to five inches of snow is expected.

FEBRUARY MADE US SHIVER: The average high in Birmingham for the month of
February was 54.5 degrees, four degrees colder than normal. The rain total
was a whopping 8.71". Birmingham now has a rain surplus of almost five
inches (4.83) for the year.

26 YEARS AGO: Today's record low is 15 from 1980; oddly enough that year
could go on to feature one of our hottest summers on record.

ONE MORE MILD DAY: And then some cooler air will arrive. The cold
front was pushing down into North Texas this afternoon. It should come
through Central Alabama at some point Thursday and drop our temperatures
into the mid 40s Thursday night and Friday morning. Our lowest temperatures
should be early Saturday. We are projecting an average low of 37 across
Central Alabama.

HOW ABOUT RAIN? There is just not much promise. As the transition
starts taking place tomorrow, there should be few if any showers. The next
chance after that would be a small chance Sunday night or Monday.

SPRING WARMTH: The temperature soared into the 70s over most of
Alabama this afternoon, including mid 70s in some areas. Tomorrow's highs
will back off to the low and mid 60s.

PLAIN HOT IN THE PLAINS: It was just like summer in parts of the
Central Plains this afternoon. By 2:00 p.m., the temperature had soared to
97 at Wichita Falls in North Texas. It was 93 in Abilene and around 91 at a
number of other places in North Texas and Oklahoma.

AROUND THE WORLD: We saw a report this morning of 76 below zero at
a station in Greenland. We are convinced that was an error. Scared me for a
moment...it is still plenty cold in Alaska. It was 50 below zero at
Chandalar Lake...at Barrow on the north coast, it was 43 below with a wind
chill of 65 below and it was 67 below wind chill in Nuiqsut. Certainly not a
good day to hang out the wash or go on a picnic...looks like rain is missing
Phoenix again today, so this will probably be their 134th day in a row with
not a drop of rain. That has never occurred before in recorded
history.lowest temperature in the lower 48 this morning was 13 below at
Caribou and Presque Isle, Maine...Bettles, Alaska had 44 below with 28
inches of snow on the ground.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has almost seized
total command of my recliner. Looks like I am going to have to schedule
opportunities to take power naps. The recliner is the same color she is, so
she just disappears...a funny thing happened at 11:07 a.m. The weather radio
alarm went off (weekly test). Molly, in a deep sleep, stood up immediately
with her hair all messed up and headed for one of her safe places because of
the noise. I cuddled her to get her to calm down, so she returned to the
recliner and slept another hour...on our walk, first thing she did was to
dive into a teenage cedar tree where she jumped a little community rabbit
the other night. The tree limbs were all the way down to the ground, so only
her rear end was sticking out with her tail wagging. She did scare a bird
out of the tree, but no rabbit...lots of birds singing this morning-almost
an ensemble. One bird was a lot louder than the others. He must have been
the choir director and reminded me of Dennis Altzimer, our Music Director at
Huffman Baptist. Life goes on, even if I never get a nap in my recliner.

...Spring-Like Warmth Next Two Days...

Weather people consider today the first day of Spring. In reality, it does
not arrive for about three weeks. The old thermometer will be acting like
spring today and tomorrow with highs in the 70s. That includes mid 70s
today. A few showers may show up Thursday, then it will turn cooler on
Friday. Later Saturday, clouds will increase again with a slight chance of
showers. Our better chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm comes on
Sunday. During all of this, we do not see any prospect of any bitter cold.

With brisk SW winds, high temperatures were 70 or better over most of
Alabama Tuesday, including some mid 70s down south. Clouds were in and out
making
for a very pleasant day.

DID YOU KNOW...that rain that falls over extreme Southern Saskatchewan and
SE Alberta in Canada flows through New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico? Also,
rain that falls in Huntsville, Guntersville, Scottsboro, Decatur and
Florence flows northward through West Tennessee and Kentucky to Cairo,
Illinois and then turns south down the Mississippi and through New Orleans.
Rain that falls on Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden and Tuscaloosa also winds
up in the Gulf of Mexico but not through New Orleans. Instead, it is by
Mobile Bay. Of course a lot of that rain will evaporate, soak in the ground,
get pumped into water systems-you name it.

WEDNESDAY NOTES: Summer-like heat in West Texas yesterday with a high of 92
at Childress and Wink...again, not a drop of rain in Phoenix, so their long
string of rainless days continues.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: They say a pet will love you no matter what.
They are so forgiving and they appreciate the smallest gestures of kindness.
They return love ten-fold. It amazes me that I can give Little Miss Molly a
full-sized treat and the next time give her only a half a treat and she does
not know the difference. She is happy as a lark and bounces around like a
rubber ball. She sure has made me younger and I was very reluctant for her
to start living in our home over three years ago. Boy, did I change.

MARCH COMING IN LIKE A COWARD: We all know that March has a bad
reputation around here for storms and wildly fluctuating temperatures. We
will get the latter and later we will certainly get some storms. The weather
looks rather benign into the early part of the weekend. All evidence at this
time points to our best chance of rain, along with some thunderstorms, on
Sunday. Best chance of those will be across North Alabama.

Meanwhile, if you're tired of cold weather, the next several days
are custom ordered for you with highs in the lower 70s Wednesday and
Thursday and backing off a few degrees to the 60s on Friday and Saturday.
While there will be a few showers late Thursday or Thursday night, they
should be quite light followed by clearing weather Friday.

Low temperatures this morning were generally in the 30s and low 40s.
One of the lowest was 30 at Black Creek in NE Etowah County.

ACTION ON THE WEST COAST: We are pleased to see that we have people
from all 50 states and numerous foreign countries logging on to read our ABC
33/40 BLOG. This morning, Robert Buell, reported 2.10 inches of rain in the
last 24 hours in his "tiny corner of the world" 45 miles east of downtown
Los Angeles. It took him two hours and ten minutes for a 25-mile commute
yesterday. Elsewhere in California, there was 4 inches of rain at Crescent
City in the NW, 3.69 at Blue Canyon in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains and 2.84
in Yosemite National Park.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: 18 inches of new snow overnight at Crater Lake,
Oregon bringing the total on the ground to 147 inches...for the second
morning in a row, Upstate New York was the coldest with 18 below at
Watertown...40 below was the coldest in Alaska this morning at Wainwright
where the wind chill was 57 below.

DID YOU KNOW?...that officials estimate that 15 million cubic yards
of debris are still to be removed from the Mississippi Gulf Coast alone due
to Hurricane Katrina that moved ashore six months ago and devastated New
Orleans and the Mississippi and Alabama coast. That is amazing...final
edition of STORM ALERT 2006 tonight at 7 at the Northport Civic Center. Come
early for a good seat.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes my little pal, Little Miss
Molly, looks at me disgusted when I laugh at her too much and I should not
have laughed this morning. She was having so much fun on her morning walk
with her hair blowing in the wind, when she suddenly saw a middle-sized
white object cross the walking track 50 yards away. She was convinced it was
a new dog in the community and she wanted to welcome it. She started whining
and jerking me forward as fast as she could go. The closer she got, the more
cautious she became. It was a large white plastic bag that had bounced
across the track and lodged in the hedgerow. Getting within 15 feet, Molly
started a low growl and wagging her tail slowly. Suddenly a gust of wind
rustled the bag a bit. She jumped backwards and headed for home. The poor
little girl was spooked and I could not stop laughing..life goes on with all
its ups and downs and Molly has lots of those.

...The Big Warm-Up Continues...

Alabama's big warm-up continues through mid-week. Most communities should
reach 70 today, and low 70s are likely tomorrow. If we reach our forecast
high of 73 tomorrow, that will be within one degree of the warmest
temperature recorded so far this year (74 on February 16).

We will see some high clouds from time to time, but the low levels remain
dry and we see no chance of rain through tomorrow. We will introduce the
chance of a few scattered showers Thursday afternoon in advance of a cold
front, but upper support is weak and rainfall amounts should be light and
spotty.
Daytime temperatures will back off about 10 degrees on Friday following the
front.

WEEKEND PEEK: Saturday looks dry and mild at this point, but we will mention
a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday as a stronger front
approaches.

A quick shot of colder air is due in here Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
The latest data suggests the core of the really cold air will be shunted
east of Alabama.

WARMING UP: Salt Lake City soared to 67 degrees yesterday, which tied the
record high for the date. Lubbock, TX also tied their record high with a
balmy 81 degrees. Warmest spots in the nation were Yuma and Gila Bend, AZ
with 84.
FRIGID AIR: Yesterday's high in Caribou, Maine was only 4 degrees.
Watertown, NY dropped to 25 below zero yesterday morning.

STORM ALERT 2006: Your last chance to see Storm Alert 2006 is tonight at the
Northport Civic Center. The show begins at 7:00, but you will need to come
early to get a seat. The first 500 people get a free t-shirt, and you can

MORNING FREEZE AND QUICK WARM UP: First let's look at some low
temperatures around Alabama this morning. It is getting late in the season
and we won't have too many more real cold nights. We need some more, because
surely we have not gotten rid of all the varmints.
19 in Hamilton and Black Creek
20 in Ft. Payne (private weather station)
21 at Ft. Payne Airport, Gadsden, Florence
22 in Pinson, Crossville, DeSoto State Park, Munford,
Wedowee
23 in Leeds, Jasper, Guntersville, Cullman
24 in Decatur, Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Parrish
and Albertville
25 in Moulton, Alexander City, Muscle Shoals
26 in Anniston, Hartselle, Northport, Vinemont
27 in Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa
Brisk SW winds set in today bringing a quick warm up, but the
warmest weather is yet to come. By Tuesday, many areas will see 70 and
Wednesday and Thursday will have mid 70s. We may see some showers late
Thursday extending into Friday morning when another cold front comes
through. At this time, the showers appear to be mostly light.
DANCING IN THE DESERT: Surely they are in Phoenix where the
official forecast finally calls for some scattered showers Tuesday and
Wednesday-maybe even a 30 or 40 percent chance. It is about time because
today was the 132nd day in a row with not even a trace of rain.
STORM ALERT 2006: One more time to get a chance to see this year's
tour. It is tomorrow night (yes, on Tuesday instead of Thursday) at the
Northport Civic Center at 7:00 p.m. Come early for a good seat.
ELSEWHERE: 88 in Mesa, Arizona was the Sunday warm spot...a very
cold 25 below zero this morning at Watertown in Upstate New York...Saranac
Lake had 14 below...it was 34 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska...probably the
best news in a long time came from North Texas where as much as 2 inches of
rain fell Friday night and Saturday in a drought-plagued area where grass
fires have been a tremendous problem.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A very pleasant walk with Little Miss
Molly at midday...looked up and saw 9 jet contrails overhead and down across
the western sky. Some of them even crossed into a figure "X"...the contrails
mixed in with the high cirrus clouds. It was a nice little sideshow by
Mother Nature who gives us so very much to enjoy...Spring seems to be
exploding. I have a friend in extreme North St. Clair County and he reports
that buttercups are blooming and the maple tree budding. The Old Crow Motel
is also budding here and my Bradford pear trees are budding quickly...Little
Miss Molly jumped that little CR (Community Rabbit) again last night. He was
nestled in a flower garden just off the walking track, but I was cautious.
Little Miss Molly jerked me halfway down into their yard but I was able to
prevent a fall...maybe a minor whiplash, but I have had lots of those over
the last 3 year with that little rascal. She may never slow down. Woe is me
but life goes on.

...Sunny Sunday...

GOOD MORNING: A chilly start out there across Alabama this morning. With
high pressure nearby, winds died down overnight and combined with clear
skies to send the mercury falling after the sun went down. But the ol'
thermometer will make a nice comeback today, and that will be a herald of
things to come in the week ahead.

TODAY/TOMORROW: Our winds will be shifting around to the southwest as high
pressure slides to our east today. Readings will top out in the lower 60s
across the area under mostly sunny skies. Some high clouds will overspread
the area this afternoon, but they won't dull the bright late Winter sun very
much. Readings tonight will be several degrees warmer than last night, with
lows just below 40 degrees. Tomorrow, we will flirt with 70 degrees in many
locations.

MIDWEEK: Temperatures will soar into the 70s Wednesday and Thursday, with a
few places in South Central Alabama seeing the unseasonable 80 degree mark.
As moisture levels increase, there could be a shower as early as Tuesday
night, with a slight chance on Wednesday. Chances will increase on Thursday
as a front slides through. Friday will be an in-between day with rain
returning on Saturday. That rain will be compliments of our front, which
will be coming back to the north as a warm front by then.

UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY: One year ago today, rescuers found more than they
bargained for as they searched for victims after an F1 tornado ripped
through a Palm Bay, Florida neighborhood. In one unroofed home, they found
an elaborate indoor marijuana growing setup. The owner of the house, who
was not home at the time was charged with possessing and manufacturing
cannabis.

TORNADO ALLEY: When we think of Tornado Alley, we think of places like
Oklahoma and Kansas. Not so fast says a trio of National Weather Service
meteorologists turned researchers. Read all about it in today's Weather
Talk.

GOOD AFTERNOON! Skies cleared right on schedule overnight across North and
Central Alabama, setting the stage for a sunshine filled day. Despite the
presence of the strong late Winter sun, temperatures will struggle to get
very far into the 50s. That is because the sun's warming is fighting an
uphill battle against a cold northerly flow on the back side of the low
pressure system that brought us all the rain yesterday. Those winds will
begin to die down this afternoon as the pressure gradient relaxes.
Overnight, the winds will go calm and with clear skies, excellent
radiational cooling conditions will exist. This will allow overnight
readings to drop below freezing across the area.

RAINFALL REPORT: Most locations across the North Central Alabama totaled
around one inch of rain when all was said and done on Saturday. The
Birmingham Airport picked up exactly one inch, bringing our total for the
year to nearly 15 inches. That is over five inches above normal. Some
locations definitely picked up more, as evidenced by Montgomery, where
nearly three inches fell. Places in West Central and extreme East Central
Alabama probably picked up two or more inches.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will start off clear and cold, but things will
quickly warm up as a nice southwesterly flow begins across the area. This
will allow temperatures to warm into the 60s tomorrow. Skies will become
partly cloudy during the day, but sunshine will still be plentiful. This
will be the beginning of several days of above normal temperatures.

Tuesday will be a little warmer than Monday, with temperatures making the
upper 60s in most locations under partly cloudy skies.
Wednesday will see most areas reaching 70 degrees, quite a treat for late
February. There could be a shower as southerly winds continue to transport
in
moisture, but the chances are remote.

By Thursday, with a warm and decently moist airmass in place, an approaching
cold front will set off a few more showers. But temperatures will still
reach near or just above 70 degrees.

FLIP FLOPPER: One of the things that we hate to do is flip flop on a
forecast, and I did that yesterday when it came to next weekend. The
aforementioned cold front will edge into the area on Friday, or pass
through, depending on what you believe. The GFS continues to advertise that
the front will stall, keeping us mild and a little bit on the wet side as we
head into the weekend. I will buy that for now.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: 7.22 inches of rain fell on Hilo HI, setting a
record. The heavy rains were the result of a Kona Low over the islands.
Kona Lows are subtropical cyclones that form over the North Pacific during
the cool season. They are one of the least understood weather phenomena
that affect the island paradise, bringing high winds, heavy rains and flash
flooding. Southwesterly winds around the Kona Low converged with the usual
easterly trade winds and forced moist air up over the mountains on the east
side of the Big Island, causing the heavy rains.

...Sunny Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! After a thorough Saturday soaking, we will enjoy a day of
near total sunshine. Temperatures will manage to warm to near 50 degrees
today on the strength of that late winter sun. There will be a strong
northerly wind through much of the day, so you will need a jacket when you
head to Rickwood Field this afternoon...

RICKWOOD? A significant event is being played at America's Oldest Ballpark
today. ESPN Classic will stage a vintage Negro League baseball game at
Rickwood Field in western Birmingham. The game will celebrate the rich
history and tradition of the Negro Leagues and their role in Black history
and the history of America's greatest game. The players will be in vintage
1940s uniforms. Gates open at 1:30, the game begins at 3:00 p.m. I will see
you there!

THE FORECAST: After a sunny Sunday, our winds will go calm and temperatures
will drop. Lows tonight across the area will drop below freezing across the
area. High pressure will slide just to our east on Monday, allowing a
warmup to begin. Temperatures tomorrow will reach the middle 60s under
mostly sunny skies, upper 60s on Tuesday and the lower to middle 70s on
Wednesday. That will be quite nice for the end of February. Moisture
levels will continue to increase through midweek on the backs of a nice
southerly breeze. Showers may break out on Wednesday, and continue into
Thursday as a front approaches. There is a chance that the front may get
hung up and not exit the area until the weekend. We will wait and see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: The Buffalo Creek flood killed 125 people in Logan
County, West Virginia. Two coal slag dams burst on the Middle Fork, about
forty miles southeast of Charleston, WV. 4000 people were left homeless as
hundreds of homes were swept away by a 50 foot wall of water. Three days of
rain falling atop a six-inch snow cover caused the dam break.. The town of
Saunders WV was completely destroyed along with parts of 16 other small
towns. $10 million in damage.
