==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: On this date in 1983, 9.22 inches of rain fell at the NWS
in Birmingham on West Oxmoor Road in just 24 hours on the night before the
Alabama/Auburn game. Severe flash flooding resulted and some evacuations
had to be done. If the observation had been at the airport, it would have
been a new 24 hour record for Birmingham. There was a tornado warning and
torrential downpour during the Iron Bowl game at Legion Field.

SEVERE WEATHER: Unfortunately, we could be dealing with a chance of severe
weather tonight across North Alabama and on Sunday across South Central
sections of the state. A warm front is moving northward across West Central
and Southwest Alabama this morning. Behind the front, moisture rich air is
surging northward on an increasing wind flow in the lower atmosphere.
Dewpoints had jumped into the lower 60s over southern Mississippi by late
morning.
This airmass will continue spreading northward into West Alabama. Some
showers started firing at mid-morning over Northwest Alabama. This activity
will intensify later this afternoon along and ahead of the warm front as it
moves northward. Some severe storms are possible along the front due to the
high levels of wind shear in the atmosphere.

A surface low to the west of Alabama will move into western Tennessee this
evening. Northern Mississippi, western Alabama and middle Tennessee will be
in the warm sector of the low and in a position to experience severe
weather, including the possibility of supercell thunderstorms. Instability
levels will reach moderate levels in the warm sector by this evening as the
low lifts out to the northeast. A cold front will approach the area from
the northwest. Wind damage will be the primary threat this evening,
although there is a small threat of isolated tornadoes with any individual
storms that form. Large hail is also a possibility.

The front should edge into Central Alabama on Sunday, stalling out south of
Birmingham. Rain showers will be likely tomorrow, with storms to the south
of the front. Severe weather could occur on Sunday also over South Central
Alabama.
Residents of North Alabama should be alert to this developing weather
situation today and Sunday.

HEADING TOWARD MONDAY: A second surface low is expected to develop over
southern Georgia tomorrow. As this low forms and moves northeastward,
rainfall will increase once again over North and Central Alabama. Some
decent rainfall amounts could occur Sunday night through Monday morning.
Some storm total rainfall amounts through Monday could reach two inches or
more.

COLD: As this low moves away, much colder air will invade Alabama and the
Deep South. Strong high pressure will dive into the Central Part of the
nation, sending our temperatures tumbling starting Monday afternoon.
Temperatures will struggle to get into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday with
overnight lows dropping far into the 20s. Readings in the teens will be
possible. We will watch for the possibility of a Gulf low developing later
in the week, which could mean a cold rain or some freezing rain. Stay
tuned.

...Strong Storms Possible...

GOOD MORNING: This forecast will have a lot of twists and turns. Already,
skies are cloudy across the area this morning as warm air is moving into the
area. Some areas noticed a little sleet during the overnight, which always
leads to a little excitement. Some areas that have not seen precip yet this
morning may see it start out as sleet, but it won't cause any problems.

TODAY/SUNDAY: The warm front that moved through the area will camp out just
to our north for the next couple of days. A couple of waves will ripple
along the front, creating better opportunities for precipitation. There
could be enough instability for a few storms thrown in, and the proximity of
an upper level jet could give some of them the chance to be strong to severe
to the north of the area today. Tonight will see a continued chance of
showers, as will Sunday, with the frontal system in the area. Increasing
instability means a better chance of severe weather tomorrow afternoon and
evening. The cold front will get its act together and push through the area
early on Monday.

COLD WEATHER AHEAD: Rain should move out of the area Monday morning and the
chill down will begin. Temperatures will likely be falling during the
afternoon hours, reaching the upper 30s around dark. Readings may struggle
to reach the 40 degree mark Tuesday and Wednesday. We will see morning lows
well down into the 20s Tuesday and Wednesday morning. In fact, a few
locations may see teens Wednesday morning. The Thursday is a big question
mark. There could be a low in the Gulf that would cause a cold rain, or
possibly a little freezing rain. Stay tuned.

LOOKING BACK ON THE 05 HURRICANE SEASON: Tuesday marked the official end of
the 2005 North Atlantic Hurricane Season. Residents along the Gulf Coast
held special events celebrating the end of the busy season. But in keeping
with the hyper-activity, the season is still not over. Hurricane Epsilon
should become extratropical.

QUICK CHANGES AHEAD: It was another cold night with temperatures falling as
low as 23 this morning in Hamilton, 25 in Fayette and Decatur and 26 in
Jasper, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. It has been a sunny but chilly day, but
we will see some quick changes in our weather within the next 24 hours. Low
temperatures for tonight will be tricky and in many areas they may occur
before midnight. This afternoon a distinct warm front was moving ashore from
the Gulf of Mexico. That will bring us a quick warm up for tomorrow as highs
go above 60. We may see some light rain before daybreak, especially over the
west and NW part of the state. It could be mixed with a little light sleet
in the beginning, especially over the NW.

During the day Saturday, the rain will spread out to other areas and we
could also hear a bit of thunder. However, the main showers and
thunderstorms will be Sunday and Sunday night and a few of those could be
severe. A good chunk of North and Central Alabama could receive between 1
and 2 inches of rain from this total storm system.

The rain will be ending Monday and turning much colder. Tuesday will be
quite cold with lows generally in the mid 20s and highs not much above 40.

THE STRANGE TROPICAL SEASON: Tropical Storm Epsilon grew into a hurricane
today way out in the Atlantic some 1,200 miles west of the Azores. It was
moving NE at 14. We see little or no danger of another tropical storm
forming in the Gulf of Mexico. The water temperature at a buoy 70 miles
south of Dauphin Island is a cool 73. Hurricanes prefer much warmer.

2005 was the first season ever with 26 named storms and the first ever with
14 hurricanes. It was also the first time ever with three Category 5
hurricanes and it is the first time on record that four major hurricanes
made landfall in the USA.I have in my caffeine-stained fingers (but never
nicotine stained) the special edition from National Geographic on Hurricane
Katrina. It is available on news stands. Absolutely awesome photography.

WORLD VIEW: In the war zone, temperatures have cooled since Iraq is in the
northern hemisphere like the U.S. Highs in Baghdad for the next 7 days will
be between 77 and 82 with clear weather...some cold temperatures this
morning included 15 below at Huron, South Dakota; 35 below at Eagle, Alaska;
and 33 below at several locations in Northern Canada...over the North Pole
in Eastern Siberia, it is expected to drop to 50 below over the weekend at
Ojmjakon. That town is billed as the world's coldest continually inhabited
location.

DID YOU KNOW?: that a tornado once touched down high up in the Wasatch
Mountains of Northern Utah spewing snow 1,000 feet into the air. It happened
on Timpanogos Divide on this date in 1970. That is a pass in the Wasatch
Mountains at an elevation of about 10,000 feet. Most unusual.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Haven't heard much out of Little Miss Molly
today. She spent the entire day at the Puppy Beauty Shop yesterday getting
trimmed and also a bunch of shots. I am sure she didn't get one minute of
sleep. She flaked out early last night, even though I was trying to play
ball with her, and today she has been asleep almost continuously. We did
take an early morning walk and for the first time in about two weeks, we did
not see or hear a single old crow. We miss that very much. We only saw one
small bird who was sitting in the underbrush only 6 inches off the ground. I
did not see it until Molly went into an arced dive and tried to land on the
bird. Of course, she failed. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns For the Weekend...

Lots of weather changes are ahead for Alabama. After a sunny and cool day
today, clouds return to the state tonight, and we will deal with rain at
times over the weekend. Two issues for the next 72 hours:

*Temperatures over the northwest corner of Alabama could be cold enough late
tonight for a light wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain after midnight,
but no major problems are expected.

*The air will destabilize tomorrow, and a few strong thunderstorms are
possible, mainly over west Alabama. The better chance of strong storms will
come on Sunday, and we can't rule out a few isolated severe thunderstorms.

The rain should early Monday of next week, and then we will deal with.

AN ARCTIC BLAST: The coldest air of the season rolls in here next week.
Temperatures on Monday should fall into the upper 30s by afternoon, and then
we are forecasting highs only in the 30s on Tuesday and Wednesday. If the
sky can clear out Tuesday night, we have a great chance of reaching the
teens Wednesday morning.

As the frigid air settles into the deep south, we will watch developments to
the west. Some of the medium range model runs develop a storm system over
the southwest U.S. that will send moisture this way toward the end of next
week. Way too early to determine if we will have any risk of wintry
precipitation.

ROAMING: A Pacific storm system dropped 3.76" at Venado, California
yesterday. Winds gusted to 64 mph at the San Francisco Airport. McCarthy,
Alaska dropped to 38 degrees below zero yesterday morning as brutally cold
air continues to overspread the northern part of the continent. Havre,
Montana reported -12.

CHANGEABLE WEATHER FOR ALABAMA: An approaching cold front spread some clouds
over us this morning and there was even some scattered light rain. The
rainfall amounts were very light. Fortunately, we had a quick early morning
warm up, otherwise there could have been a few icy spots.

It was actually colder this morning than yesterday morning. It dropped to 24
in Hamilton. At Munford in Talladega County and at Black Creek in Etowah
County, it was 24 with a heavy frost at both locations. It was 25 in Fayette
and DeSoto State Park and 26 in Wedowee.

Skies will be clearing tonight as more colder air moves in from the NW. Lows
tomorrow morning will be in the mid and upper 20s. Look for all sunshine
Friday, but more clouds will move in Friday night. There will be some rain
on Saturday, but mostly light rain. Our best chance of rain along with some
thunderstorms will come on Sunday. Then another big change. Sharper colder
air pours into the state Monday. The old thermometer could drop into the
upper 30s over the northern counties by afternoon. Our coldest temperatures
will be next Wednesday morning.

PESKY EPSILON: The hurricane season ended yesterday, but Epsilon has
actually grown stronger in the last 24 hours several hundred miles east of
Bermuda. It should continue moving eastward.

INTERESTING UPCOMING WEATHER: A huge high pressure system as strong as 1046
milibars will be settling down over the northern states during the next few
days. Look for some increasingly cold temperatures with this system. A 1046
high is very strong, more akin to mid-winter. This morning the temperature
drooped to 16 below zero at Mud Lake and 22 below at the Point 6 Radar
Site-both in Montana. It was 12 below in Browning. McCarthy, Alaska had 38
below.

DID YOU KNOW?: that Browning, Montana where it was 12 below this morning
once saw the old thermometer plunge 100 degrees in 24 hours. That is a U. S.
record. I have seen the temperature drop as much as 65 degrees in 24 hours
here in Alabama, but can you imagine a 100-degree drop? Browning is located
in NW Montana on U. S. 89 east of Glacier National Park. Population, 1,000.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is one of those rare Molly-free days at our
house. The little girl was shipped off to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) this
morning to get updated on all of her shots and to get a haircut. Her facial
hair had gotten so long that she had to peep out through some facial hair to
see where she was going. She was way overdue. That little girl simply does
not like automobiles. As soon as we put her in the car, she started shaking
like a leaf. Instead of having a more relaxing day, I missed her
tremendously only 30 minutes after she left. She is so ingrained into my
life that I need to see her every few minutes. We will have a great play
session when she gets home this afternoon. Life goes on.

A cool front will pass through Alabama today, but the air is so dry we don't
expect any rain, only scattered clouds. A fresh surge of chilly air will
move in here tonight and tomorrow, keeping temperatures below normal.

WEEKEND RAIN: A surface front will move northward through the state on
Saturday as a warm front, and that should bring some light rain at times,
especially to areas north of I-20. Then, periods of rain will be more
widespread by Sunday and Sunday night as a storm system gathers strength to
the west. A few thunderstorms might even be involved.

MAJOR COLD SNAP: A shift in the upper air pattern should allow the coldest
air so far this season to roll into Alabama early next week. Monday should
be day with falling temperatures; we should wind up in the 30s late in the
day. By Tuesday, the mercury still struggle to climb above freeze with a
brisk northerly wind. A few snow flurries will be possible Monday night and
Tuesday, but for the moment accumulating snow doesn't look likely around
here.

At the moment it looks like the coldest morning will come early Wednesday,
when the mercury could drop into the 10 to 15 degree range across much of
north and central Alabama.

Needless to say, it is really early in the game and some of these numbers
might need to be adjusted down the road, but we could very well have
pipe-bursting weather across the deep south at some point next week.

MORE COLD: Excessively cold air continues to deepen in Alaska; the high in
Fairbanks tomorrow is forecast at -10 with a low of -21. The snow cover
continues to expand in the U.S.; parts of Iowa reported over 5 inches last
night.

COLDEST OF SEASON NEXT WEEK: We are going to have a warm up of sorts
extending into the weekend, but we must mention what appears to be the
coldest weather so far this season starting Monday. More about that later. A
few of the coldest temperatures this morning:

24 on Lookout Mountain at Fort Payne
25 in Muscle Shoals
26 in Pinson, Moulton, Athens
27 in Alabaster, Gadsden, Leeds, Decatur
28 in Huntsville, Fort Payne, Anniston
29 in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham

With clear skies and little or no wind, temperatures will again fall to near
freezing tonight. This afternoon some parts of North Alabama were still in
the 40s. Thursday's highs should be 55 to 58. Another cold front will move
in later Thursday. By Friday morning, we may see some upper 20s again.
The main change will come over the weekend. Clouds will move in Saturday
with a chance of rain. The better chance of showers and maybe a thunderstorm
will be on Sunday. Weekend highs will be in the mid 60s. After that, the big
change.

Much colder air will spread in from the NW beginning on Monday and there may
be some lingering precipitation in that colder air. Daytime temperatures
could fall into the 30s later Monday and it is not out of the question to
see a few flurries. That is still a long way down the road to be certain on
that. Evidence indicates that low temperatures Tuesday morning could be down
around the 20-degree mark in some places. Stay tuned.

HURRICANE SEASON ENDS: It officially ends at midnight tonight. Shall we all
go outside and dance in the streets? What a horrible season. There were 13
hurricanes in 2005, including 3 that reached Category 5. Hurricane Wilma
produced an extremely low pressure of 882 millibars-a record for the
Atlantic Basin. Even though this is the last day of the season, we still
have Tropical Storm Epsilon over 600 miles east of Bermuda and growing
stronger. It should curve back to the NE a long time before getting to
Bermuda.

DID YOU KNOW?: that President Harry S. Truman had such an avid interest in
the weather that he had standing orders for the U. S. Weather Bureau to have
a fresh hands-on weather map on his desk each morning by the time he got to
the oval office. Back in those days there were no facsimile-transmitted
weather maps. Each weather office drew their own. Today, we would call him a
"weather geek."

RAMBLING: 39 below zero this morning in Tok, Alaska where there was 18
inches of snow on the ground...in the lower 48, minus 2 at Grand Forks,
North Dakota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much, much loving and cuddling with my Little
Miss Molly on the couch last night interspersed with ball games. We spent
hours together since we had missed so much playtime. She has some weird
habits. After playing a lot, she curled up on her blanket on the couch, but
at 10:12 p.m. she suddenly woke up and went into one of those explosive
energy bursts where she ran all through the house at breakneck speed,
bouncing off the back of the couch, running across the room to another soft
chair and using it like a trampoline. After 5 minutes of that, she crawled
back up on the couch and was sound asleep in 45 seconds. She was passed out
for the rest of the night. Life goes on.

...Cool and Dry Weather...

Cool and dry weather continues through Friday. A cold front will slip though
tomorrow in dry fashion, and will bring a fresh supply of cool air on
Friday. Temperatures will be running about five degrees below normal for
late November.

WET WEEKEND: Clouds and wet weather will return to the state over the
weekend. The rain should begin during the day Saturday, becoming more
widespread Saturday night into Sunday, when some thunderstorms could be
involved. At this point we do not expect any problems with severe
thunderstorms.

FRIGID AIR: Much colder air will begin flowing into the state early next
week as the storm system moves to the northeast of Alabama. Monday could be
a day featuring temperatures falling into the 30s along with a very brisk
north wind. Some of the coldest temperatures so far this season are possible
toward the middle of next week.

BAMA TWISTERS: The NWS confirmed a total of 6 tornadoes in Alabama that
touched down Monday. Two of them were in Jefferson county, one at Concord,
and other near Corner. Five of the six tornadoes were F0; there was one F1
in Coosa county near Equality.

HURRICANE SEASON ENDS: Today is the last "official" day of the 2005
hurricane season, and fittingly we still have a tropical storm on the map.
Tropical storm Epsilon is in the central Atlantic, about 750 miles east of
Bermuda. This year's season was the busiest ever, with a total of 28 named
storms, including 13 hurricanes. Seven of those hurricanes were major
(category three or greater on the Saffir-Simpson scale).

REAL FRIGID AIR: Coldest spots in the nation yesterday were Northway and
McCarthy, Alaska with a low of 38 below zero.

...Dangerous Weather Today...

GOOD MORNING: We are watching a developing severe weather situation across
Alabama and the Deep South this morning. A powerful low pressure system is
located near the Iowa/Nebraska border this morning. A strong cold front is
surging eastward, and is near the Mississippi River. Ahead of the front,
strong winds in the lower atmosphere are pumping huge quantities of warm,
moist air northward. This unstable airmass is setting the stage for the
development of strong to severe storms across the area today. The
instability figures are not only impressive for November, they are looking
like they will be impressive for even spring outbreaks. It appears there
will be sufficient shear for discrete thunderstorm cells that will be
capable of producing significant tornadoes. That threat will begin later
this morning. A line of intense storms will cross the area starting around
lunchtime today, passing across the state during the afternoon and evening
hours, finally putting an end to the threat. .

BE WEATHER AWARE: Today is one of those days where you must remain in
close touch with weather bulletins and information. Review your personal
tornado safety plans and be ready to act on a moments notice if a warning is
issued or you see threatening weather approaching.

OTHERWISE: Winds will be strong today, out of the south at 15-25 mph,
occasionally gusting over 35 mph. It will be warm, with highs reaching the
70s. Behind the front, temperatures will drop into the forties tonight with
a biting west wind and a few lingering showers. Showers should exit eastern

sections of the state early tomorrow, with gradual clearing expected during
the day. Wednesday should be a sunny and seasonably cool day. Thursday
will feature partly cloudy skies and temperatures back in the lower 60s
ahead of a reinforcing cold front. Readings both mornings will approach
freezing.

That front will drop temperatures back into the 50s on Friday, with sunny
skies. Our next rain chance looks like it will come on Saturday as low
pressure forms to our west.
