GOOD AFTERNOON!: Folks down around Helena must be starting to wonder what
is happening with all of the recent minor earthquakes. The area felt
another small tremor just after midnight this morning. It was measured at
2.8 on the Richter scale and was centered six miles southwest of Helena.

OUR FORECAST: The airmass over Alabama is warm and unstable this
afternoon, with CAPE values in the 2500-3000 range. Showers and storms have
become quite widespread by early afternoon from Huntsville down to Jasper.
They will be more scattered south of Cullman County, and isolated south of
Birmingham.

Showers and storms will die out after sunset, generally leaving a warm and
muggy night across the state. Temperatures will have a hard time making it
to 70 degrees tonight in most locations, except maybe Pinson and the higher
station in Northeast Alabama. Showers and storms will be more likely on
Sunday as the cold front to our northwest edges a little closer. The front
should push through the area Sunday night or Monday morning, but it probably
will not make it much further southeast. This means that we will be
leaving in shower and storms chances for much of the coming week and
tempering our excitement over the prospects of some overnight lows in the
middle 60s.

TROPIC TOPICS: Tropical Depression Seven is now Tropical Storm Gaston.
Gaston is located about 130 miles southeast of Charleston, SC, drifting west
with top winds of 40 mph. Gaston will reach the South Carolina coast on
Sunday, probably with winds around 50 mph. It will then turn north into the
Mid Atlantic states. Heavy rain will be the greatest threat.

Now...Frances...

Hurricane Frances is located 750 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands
with top winds now 120 mph. The storm is moving northwest, but is expected
to turn to the west northwest soon. It could threaten the islands, but the
official track carries it to 200 miles north of Puerto Rico Tuesday morning.
The official track places it in the southeastern Bahamas by Thursday morning
as a 130 mph hurricane. We will be following it closely, since the GFS
model continues to depict the hurricane moving into the Gulf of Mexico by
late next weekend. It then turns north in the Gulf and impacts the
Mississippi/Alabama coast Labor Day. We will have a long time to watch it.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Illinois
As severe weather increased, the watch was never upgraded to a tornado
watch. Spotter networks were not activated. After all, it was the wrong
time of year for a tornado. A tornado warning was never issued because the
storm was located in the ground clutter pattern of the pre-Doppler radar,
the lack of Doppler radar made identification of the storm's tornadic
potential difficult, it was moving in an unusual direction (from NW to SE)
and the tornado was obscured by heavy rain. Television coverage was not
effective. The massive F5 tornado killed 29 people and injured 350 in
northern Illinois' Kendall and Will counties. The town of Plainfield was
especially hard hit.

...Front to Bring Showers/Storms...

GOOD MORNING! Checking the weather maps across North America this morning,
we find a large trough of low pressure over the western United States. It
is progressing eastward into the central part of the country. A long, snaky
cold front extends across the breadth of the country from the Great Lakes to
southwestern Texas. This front will edge closer over the next 24 hours and
try to push through our area by Monday. In the meantime, it will bring
increasing shower and storm chances for our forecast

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: A warm, humid airmass covers Alabama on this Saturday
morning. Temperatures will warm to near 90 degrees in most locations again
this afternoon, with skies becoming partly cloudy. There is about a 1 in 3
chance your community will see a shower or storm today and tonight. Those
chances will increase tomorrow as the cold front to our northwest edges
closer to Alabama. The front was expected to pass through the area by
Monday, giving us drier and less humid conditions along with very low rain
chances into midweek, but that is not for sure now. The front may slow down
and still be hanging around on Monday. This could delay or even cancel our
forecasted drier and less humid conditions.

TROPICS: The tropics have suddenly gotten very interesting with major
Hurricane Frances in the Atlantic and a strengthening Tropical Depression
Seven off the coast of the Carolinas. Frances will continue northwest and
slow down as a trough passes to the north of the tropical cyclone. It will
then resume a western course, passing north of the Greater Antilles early
next week. It could then threaten the Carolinas, or if the GFS model is
correct, it could move into the Gulf. TD7 will become Tropical Storm Gaston
before reaching the South Carolina coast on Sunday and turning north into
the Mid Atlantic states. The main threat from this system will be heavy
rains. Gaston? Must be French. He is the replacement for 1998's Georges,
whose name was retired.

NICE WEATHER AFTER WEEKEND STORMS: If you don't mind getting through some
more showers and thunderstorms over the weekend, we can look for some more
pleasant weather beginning Monday. This will include lower daytime humidity
and cooler nights. That dry weather should last at least through the middle
of next week. But let's backtrack and put the horse before the buggy.

Scattered thunderstorms this evening will diminish. Look for more scattered,
mostly afternoon, thunderstorms on Saturday. As a cool front gets closer to
the state, showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous on Sunday.
That should be the day when we get the most rain. It will be clearing
Monday. Tuesday should be just about all sunshine. Lows will be in the mid
60s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. (See our day-by-day forecast.)

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots on our tropical plate this afternoon. Our primary
concern is Hurricane Frances, which has already become a Category 2
hurricane and probably on the way to a major hurricane reputation. At midday
she was located about 800 miles east of the Lesser Antilles moving WNW about
10. She should continue WNW and NW for the next 24 hours. Sustained winds
were near 105 mph with higher gusts. She should grow stronger during the
next 24 hours and could become a Category 3 booger later today. The
long-range tracking chart is going to place her about 250 miles north of
Puerto Rico Tuesday night With a subtropical ridge expected to grow stronger
to her north, there is increasing concern for the Bahamas and possibly the
Florida-Georgia-South Carolina coast. We should mention for what it's worth:
one of the weather models places her about 200 miles south of New Orleans by
daybreak Tuesday. We emphasize immediately that prog charts that far ahead
can have major mistakes. It is strictly a case of watching and waiting. We
also note a low pressure area 115 SE of Charleston that could become a
tropical depression before curving back toward the USA coast.

SWEEPING OFF MY DESK: Interesting to note that on this date in 1893, the
first of three major hurricanes to strike the Southeast moved in just south
of Savannah where winds were clocked to 120 mph. A huge storm surge was the
main cause for 1,000 fatalities at Charleston. ..chilly spots in the USA: 30
this morning in Big Piney, Wyoming and 27 in Anaktuvuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The big question is, will little Miss Molly go
through a period of "terrible twos"? We don't think so-it's just not in that
little rascal's bubbly personality. Out walking early today, she got to see
some of her favorite people who are the human grandparents to another
Shih-Tsu named Mattie. Molly and Mattie play well together...we did hear two
birds this morning. One female bird sounded like she was talking on her cell
phone. (Just teasing ladies!) haven't seen a crow or a wabbit in four or
five days. Molly and I will have o go to birdland and recruit some new
residents. Old crows, other birds, cats, other dogs, spiders, earthworms,
gnats and mosquitoes are all part of our life...last night Molly did leap
high in the air trying to grab a lightening bug which was at at least 15
feet above her head..maybe she needs glasses...I did get in "twubble" for
sneaking Molly a small piece of angel food cake for her birthday...there is
a rule in our house, "no human food for Molly." But when she looks up at me
with those sparkling eyes, I melt and get in more trouble. Life goes on.

...Weekend Showers Ahead...

Warm and humid weather continues through the weekend, with the daily
opportunity for a few passing showers and thunderstorms. Storms could be a
little more numerous over the weekend thanks to an approaching cold front.
That front is now expected to pass through north Alabama Sunday night, with
noticeably drier air moving in for the first part of next week. For now we
are forecasting mostly sunny days, clear nights, and lower humidity levels
for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

FRANCES: Looks like we will have a major hurricane on our hands in the
Atlantic later today. Frances continues to grow stronger, with sustained
winds of around 100 mph. The system is about 800 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles in the Atlantic, and is moving to the west/northwest. Most of the
computer model guidance suggests a turn to the northwest, and then back to
the west over the next five days as steering currents change. There is a
chance Frances could threaten the Atlantic coast of the U.S. in about seven
days; so folks all the way from Miami to Boston will be watching closely. We
can't rule out the chance of Frances getting into the Gulf of Mexico, but at
this point it seems unlikely.

FOOTBALL IS HERE! Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s for the big
opening night of high school football tonight with high humidity levels. A
passing shower or storm is possible, but many stadiums will be dry.
Samford hosts West Alabama tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. at Seibert Stadium in
Birmingham. A passing shower or thunderstorm is possible during the game;
the temperature at kickoff should be near 80 degrees, falling into the mid
70s by the fourth quarter.

BETTER WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK: That's the way it looks now, although it's
not sealed in stone. There are increasing indications that our next cool
front will reach this area late Sunday or early Monday. In fact, some of the
forecast models indicate that the front will eventually push all the way to
the Gulf Coast. We think that showers will be ending in this area early
Monday or maybe even Sunday night. This should be followed by clearing
weather on Monday and a noticeable drop in the humidity. Low temperatures
will be in the more pleasant mid 60s for the first part of next week. Until
all of that neat stuff takes place, we will have more showers and
thunderstorms through Sunday. We think our better chances will be Saturday
and Sunday, but we will have a decent chance also tomorrow.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Frances was growing stronger 1100 miles
east of the Lesser Antilles this afternoon. She will become a hurricane at
any time, in fact, she may eventually become a major hurricane. The
long-range track forecast brings her north of the Leeward Islands by Tuesday
morning. After that...nothing is certain. It is a case where the SE Coast of
the USA could be in her path. There is also an area of nervous weather off
the coast of the Carolinas. Not expected to amount to much.

NOTES FROM FAR AND WIDE: Stormy weather in the Midwest for several
days...this afternoon there is a moderate risk for much of Iowa...in NE
Mississippi, 6.54 inches of rain in the last 24 hours at Iuka. A whole lot
of additional rain had fallen earlier than that...more than 2 inches in NW
Alabama at Hamilton and also more than 2 inches in East Alabama in Anniston
and Wadley...USA cold spots this morning, 27 in Eagle, Alaska and 32 in
Yellowstone National Park. An additional 2 inches of snow was expected in
parts of Yellowstone today with temperatures dropping to 26-32 tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a wonderful birthday and
all of the e-mail birthday greetings are much appreciated...they will all be
acknowledged...don't tell anyone that I slipped little Miss Molly three very
small pieces of angel food cake so she could remember having a birthday
cake. I will probably get fussed at because it is "human" food...our sunrise
walk this morning was as quiet as could be. Not a single bird seen or heard.

I assume they are on strike...only thing "exciting" was a very young
earthworm about five inches long coming down the track headed SW toward
Birmingham. At the rate it was going, I estimate it will take five years to
get downtown. Molly wanted to gobble it up, but I said no. I am sure it will
end up as link sausage for a bird...Molly exercised her right of eminent
domain this morning, seizing my recliner for a long, long nap and preventing
me from taking one of my famous 15-minute power naps. I did not mind. We
celebrate birthweeks instead of birthdays so Molly will be the boss for six
more days. Life goes on.

...Occasional Showers...

Lets begin with a look back at rain totals from around Alabama yesterday:

Hamilton 2.30"
Carbon Hill 1.80"
Anniston (downtown) 1.59"
Dearmanville 1.04"
Black Creek (Etowah Co) 0.80"
Clanton 0.73"

The blanket of moist air over the state is going nowhere, so we will
continue to forecast scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms on
daily basis through the weekend. The sun will break out at times, but in
this kind of air a shower is possible at almost any time.

DOWN THE ROAD: A cold front is expected to be near the northwest corner of
Alabama by the first of next week, and some of the model runs have hinted at
drier air slipping in here by the middle of next week. While we don't buy
that solution just yet, we will begin to trip the chance of rain back a bit
by Tuesday.

FRANCES: The sixth tropical storm of the season continues moving westward
through the central Atlantic with sustained winds of about 45 mph. A
northward component of motion should begin by Friday, but it now appears
that Frances could turn back to the west by early next week, which could
mean a threat to the southeast U.S. late next week. Frances is expected to
strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend.

BIG TIME RAIN: Based on NEXRAD estimates, about 10 inches of rain fell on
parts of southern Tishomingo county, in northeast Mississippi, yesterday
morning. The Natchez Trace was closed for a while due to a mudslide.

THE ALABAMA STORY: If you've never driven the Natchez Parkway, that starts
in SW Mississippi near Natchez and runs all the way NE to Nashville, you
should drive it sometime. It is a beautiful uncluttered drive through mostly
quiet countryside. However today, where the Trace crosses extreme NW
Alabama, the National Park Service closed part of it due to flash flooding.

This was mainly in NW Alabama's Colbert County. Flash flood warnings were
issued for several NW Alabama counties this morning as slow-moving
thunderstorms moved toward the east. By early this afternoon, there were
scattered storms in many parts of the state and some were producing heavy
rain. The Alabama weather situation won't change a great deal with scattered
to occasionally numerous thunderstorms all the way through the weekend.
Naturally, there will be a variation day-to-day in the number of storms. If
we had to pick a number out of our hat, we would say that the best chance
will be Thursday and Sunday/Monday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It is officially known as Tropical Depression Six located
1,500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Although it became fragmented
overnight, it should still become Tropical Storm Frances fairly soon. The
long-range track forecast does not indicate a path toward the Gulf of Mexico
or the SE USA. In the Western Pacific, super Typhoon Chaba was still
producing sustained winds of 165 mph with gusts to 200 and kicking up waves
as high as 36 feet! It should to cross the southwestern most island of Japan
by this weekend.

PROWLING AROUND ON WEDNESDAY: The USA cool spot this morning was Saranac
Lake in far Upstate New York where it was 35...another chilly note...up to 2
inches of snow was expected to accumulate today and tonight in parts of
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is hard to believe that little Miss Molly
is two years old today. Don't tell her that we spent only $1 on her birthday
present. It was still another squeaky toy that we bought in the $1 section
of a super market. She already has so many squeaky toys, that our living
area sounds like a den of mice at times. I can't even describe the impact
that little Miss Molly has had on my life. My blood pressure has always been
normal. Even if I had high blood pressure, she would have cured it. We
haven't had Molly the entire two years but in the 21 months that we have had
her, I am sure that she and I have walked over 700 miles. That would be
equal to walking all the way to near Lincoln, Nebraska or to near
Washington, D.C. That's why I think Miss Molly will make me live 15 years
longer. An interesting note by e-mail this morning. A child explained that
dogs do not need to live as long as humans because they know how to love
everyone and be nice from day one. Humans have to learn to do that. Little
Miss Molly walked into our living area 21 months ago with her pom-pom tail
already wagging and it has not stopped wagging since. We love life together.

...Wet Weather For Alabama...

A blanket of very moist air will continue to cover Alabama for the
foreseeable future, which means we will have the opportunity of scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. While the best chance
of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, a
morning shower is not totally out of the question in this kind of pattern.

In about five days, toward the end of the weekend, a cold front will
approach the northwest corner of the state, but it will become parallel to
the upper air flow and should stall out before bringing in any drier air.
Daytime temperatures will generally remain below normal for late August,
with readings peaking mostly in the mid 80s. We should mention the normal
high in Birmingham has dropped to 89 degrees, meaning we are now well past
the normal peak of the summer heat in late July and early August. That
normal high for Birmingham will drop to 80 degrees by the end of September.

FINDING FRANCES: A well organized tropical wave over the central Atlantic
could become a tropical depression today, and possibly tropical storm
Frances before the day is over. While most of the computer models turn the
system northward into the open Atlantic, a few keep it churning westward,
toward the Lesser Antilles. The storm names for this season after Frances
include Gaston, Hermine, Ivan, Jeanne, Karl, and Lisa. Remember, we don't
name them, we just forecast them!

TUESDAY'S RAIN: The ABC 33/40 Weathernet site at Hamilton yesterday measured
.61" of rain, while Muscle Shoals picked up .59". Across the state line in
Tupelo, afternoon storms dropped .80" of rain.

A REPEAT PERFORMANCE: It's the same old story for Alabama-no major change in
our weather. August is still rolling along with below normal temperatures.
Brian Peters has been doing "rolling research" as the month has progressed.
Using actual records through yesterday and projecting based on the latest
forecast, he thinks Birmingham will end with the 4th coolest August on
record. Our records go back to the 1880s. Of course a noticeable warm up
toward the end of the month could make it the 5th or 6th coolest.

For the next several days, we think our high temperatures will be between
86-88. Cloud cover will be more than normal and the daily showers and
thunderstorms will help. We will have those every day but probably the best
chance will be tomorrow and sometime this weekend. This helps our air
quality...we had a Code Yellow today (moderate)

TROPICAL: Way far away in the Eastern Atlantic, things look more
interesting. A strong tropical wave was moving west from about 600 miles WSW
of the Cape Verde Islands. It is moving into a more friendly neighborhood
and will likely become a tropical depression tonight. That super typhoon in
the Western Pacific, named Chaba, weakened a bit but was still sporting
sustained winds of 160 mph with gusts to near 200. It will curve more
northward into the southern Islands of Japan Sunday morning but should be
barely hurricane force at that time. I wish we had double the space for this
today so we could look back on Hurricane Andrew that brought a disaster to
South Florida on this date in 1992. The National Hurricane Center at Coral
Gables clocked winds to 164 mph at their office. The Category 4 Andrew was
changed to a Category 5 last year after a closer look at everything.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: Possibly the biggest drenching of the summer came to
Mississippi State University yesterday with 2.41 inches of rain...USA cool
spot this morning, Stanley, Idaho, 28, hottest yesterday Gila Bend Ariz.,
and Wink, Tex., with 104.

DID YOU KNOW? That Cairo, that big city in Northern Egypt (population 9.5
million) gets an average of only one inch of rain per year. Birmingham gets
54 times that much. Contrasting sharply, is one of the wettest spots on
earth, Llora, Columbia where it's 524 inches a year!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly decided she wanted to walk
the lower walking track this morning. She rang the bell like it was a dinner
bell on the farm. I came running because it sounded so urgent. Turned out
that she wanted to play soccer before going out. I obeyed. There is so much
more to distract her on the lower track because the backyards come right
down to the track as compared to wide open areas on the upper track. Never
know what will happen. Someone had wrapped the base of a small tree with a
piece of metal with holes in it. It spooked the brave little one. I let her
sneak up on it 5 times and then she would jump backwards. She finally moved
on. She tried to gobble up a tiny piece of glass and I pulled her back at
the last minute. Don't I lead a very exciting life? It goes on and on and
on.

...Moist Air Stays In Place...

After an unusually cool first half of August, the dog days are back. Our
weather will stay warm and very humid for the rest of the week, and each day
will feature morning clouds and fog, midday sunshine, and scattered
afternoon thunderstorms. Small scale changes in the surface and upper air
pattern will determine the actual location and coverage of showers and
storms, and trying to pin that down more than a few hours in advance is
nearly impossible. Afternoon temperatures will rise into the 87 to 90 degree
range in most communities.

OZONE: A code yellow forecast for Jefferson and Shelby counties today,
meaning air quality should be in the moderate range.

TROPICS: A large tropical wave continues to move through the central
Atlantic, about midway between the coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles.
There is some chance of development over the next several days as the system
moves steadily westward across open waters

In the western Pacific, super typhoon Chaba is packing sustained winds of
180 mph, and should slowly weaken as it approaches the southern Japanese
islands late this week. Typhoon Aere is approaching Taiwan.

MONDAY RAIN: Rain totals from around Alabama yesterday included 1.15" at
Ashland, .69" at Talladega, .57" at Pell City, and .38" at Steele (in St.
Clair county).

AUGUST DEEP FREEZE: The mercury dropped to 26 degrees early yesterday at
Tower, Minnesota. For the first 23 days of the month, this August is the
coolest on record for the Minnesota cities of Minneapolis, St. Cloud, and
Alexandria. So far this is the 13th coolest meteorological summer on record
for most of Minnesota.

ALABAMA IN A NUTSHELL: This is one of those boring times in late summer
when we could almost lump an entire week's forecast into one. Of course,
there will be some daily variations in how many showers and thunderstorms
and who will get them. Only minor disturbances in the atmosphere can cause
the differences. High temperatures all week will be close to normal-mostly
between 88 and 90. There was quite a bit of fog this morning and some more
patchy fog is expected late tonight and early tomorrow morning.
Here are some selected rainfall totals for the last 24 hours ending at 7:00
a.m. today:

2.67 inches in Jackson
1.57 in Alexander City
1.65 at Mitchell Dam
1.40 in Collinsville
1.39 in Ashville

TROPICAL WEATHER: A pretty good tropical wave way out in the Eastern
Atlantic was moving west. It has some promise for development. Meanwhile,
old dilapidated Danielle far out in the Atlantic was trying to make a
comeback as she moved north. She may be a tropical depression again soon.
But if you really want something scary, check this: Typhoon Chaba out in the
Western Pacific had sustained winds of 180 mph and those may grow to 200
mph! The central pressure was getting close to the world record of 870
milibars in Typhoon Tip in 1977.

MORE COOL AUGUST NEWS: Another indication of just how "cool" this August
has been: the 33/40 weather watcher in Weaver (north of Anniston) reports an
average high for the first 22 days of only 84, which is 6 degrees below
normal. The average low has been 64-5 degrees cooler than normal. Yesterday
was the 18th day in a row that the temperature has failed to reach 90 and 12
days this month have had highs 85 or lower and 4 days below 80. There have
been four mornings with lows in the 50s. At Black Creek in NE Etowah County,
the average low so far of 62.5 is exceptional because it is unusual to have
August lows in the lower 60s or upper 50s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure got little Miss Molly's attention this
morning as we stepped outside for our first morning walk. I had her in my
arms so I could walk her across the backyard onto the walking track because
the grass was so wet. I felt a spider web on my face and by instinct I
swooped my hand across my face and whapped Molly on the side of the head. I
mean a good whap! You should have seen the look she gave me. It was as if
she was being severely punished. Boy, did she look puzzled. I hugged her and
apologized...nature throws so much beauty at us it's hard to absorb it all.

This morning in a thick fog, my neighbor's exceptionally pretty crepe myrtle
bushes looked like a big pink blur in the fog. Strangely enough, we only
heard one bird singing. I assume they were all grounded by low visibility.
Life goes on.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Things started foggy and cloudy on this Sunday in Alabama.
The fog and low stratus deck was rather persistent in many areas, taking
quite a while to burn off. But in areas where it has burned off, sunshine
has rapidly warmed temperatures into the 80s. Cloudier areas have gotten a
late start on the temperature rise. Gadsden was only at 77 degrees at 1
p.m.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Our weather in the short range will be dominated
by a dying front that is located just to our north and a series of
disturbances that will be sliding along this boundary.
One of those disturbances moving along the frontal boundary was setting off
showers and storms as it moved along late this morning and this afternoon,
starting in Mississippi and then rippling into Central Alabama. The best
rain chances for this afternoon will continue south of a line from Columbus,
MS to Birmingham to Anniston. Storms moving through Central Alabama could
be severe with the main threat coming from damaging winds. North of there,
we can’t rule out the formation of a shower or storm, but the further north
you go, the lesser that chance becomes.

Monday promises to be a lot like today, but by Tuesday, a ridge of high
pressure will begin to build over Alabama and the Deep South, spelling a
return to a more summerlike pattern of partly cloudy skies with scattered PM
thunderstorms. Temperatures through the end of the week and into the
weekend will be near normal, with daytime highs near 90 and overnight lows
in the lower 70s.

TROPICS: There are two interesting features in the tropical Atlantic this
afternoon. One is a tropical wave in the southern Caribbean. The shower
activity with this wave has diminished, and it is no longer considered a
candidate for development. The METEOSAT-7 satellite shows a tropical wave
centered along longitude 25W, which is just off the coast of Africa. This
wave was impressive as it moved of the African coast, but it has weakened
since over cooler waters. It has the potential for development over the
next few days as it moves westward.

CHARLEY, 1998 STYLE: Do you remember 1998’s Charley? Probably not. The
people around Del Rio, Texas do. Tropical Storm Charley was the second of
seven named tropical storms and hurricanes to strike the U.S. in 1998. But
the most interesting event of Charley’s arrival on the mainland would occur
the next day, when a whopping 17.03 inches of rain fell in Del Rio TX. This
amount is nearly equal to the average rainfall for an entire year. It would
establish their all-time record rainfall for a calendar day. The Del Rio
area had received less than three inches of rain during the previous 8 ½
months. Twenty people died in the resulting flooding. Maybe tropical
cyclones like to have their names retired. I guess Charley was a little
miffed at not being retired after his 1998 tirade in Texas and decided not
to be outdone in his reincarnation in 2004.

...Summer to Return...

GOOD MORNING! Everywhere I go, I hear about how it has been an unusual summer. Today, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I overheard one man tell another that they have had more days in the 70s than in the 90s this year. J.B. reported yesterday that Minneapolis is experiencing one of its coolest summers ever. We just recorded a remarkable string of days with high temperatures 88 degrees or less in Birmingham. The streak ended Thursday at thirteen days when the mercury reached 90. Mobile observed six consecutive morning record lows. Well, summer is about to make a comeback, albeit a modest one.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: A weak cool front is meandering southward across North Alabama this morning. The front is just about out of steam and will hang up just to our north today. Some drier and slightly cooler air has filtered into the Tennessee Valley, but it shouldn’t make it much further south. Only isolated showers and storms will form across North Central Alabama today. The front will push back north as a warm front early in the week and a summertime weather pattern will take hold with seasonal temperatures and the typical scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms.

ANDREW: On Saturday morning, August 22,1992, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center were alarmed to see that Hurricane Andrew was strengthening and moving faster toward the Bahamas and South Florida. Andrew was located 800 miles east of Miami, moving west at 12 mph. The Aviation model was the odd-man-out on this bright sunny morning in Miami, showing the storm moving faster toward South Florida, arriving early Monday morning. By evening, the official forecast showed Andrew making landfall on the South Florida coast about midday on Monday and a Hurricane Watch was issued along the East Coast of Florida from Titusville to Key West. This would give emergency management officials and the public only about thirty hours lead time before the actual landfall early Monday morning.
