...Wet Weather For Alabama...

A blanket of very moist air will continue to cover Alabama for the
foreseeable future, which means we will have the opportunity of scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis. While the best chance
of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, a
morning shower is not totally out of the question in this kind of pattern.

In about five days, toward the end of the weekend, a cold front will
approach the northwest corner of the state, but it will become parallel to
the upper air flow and should stall out before bringing in any drier air.
Daytime temperatures will generally remain below normal for late August,
with readings peaking mostly in the mid 80s. We should mention the normal
high in Birmingham has dropped to 89 degrees, meaning we are now well past
the normal peak of the summer heat in late July and early August. That
normal high for Birmingham will drop to 80 degrees by the end of September.

FINDING FRANCES: A well organized tropical wave over the central Atlantic
could become a tropical depression today, and possibly tropical storm
Frances before the day is over. While most of the computer models turn the
system northward into the open Atlantic, a few keep it churning westward,
toward the Lesser Antilles. The storm names for this season after Frances
include Gaston, Hermine, Ivan, Jeanne, Karl, and Lisa. Remember, we don't
name them, we just forecast them!

TUESDAY'S RAIN: The ABC 33/40 Weathernet site at Hamilton yesterday measured
.61" of rain, while Muscle Shoals picked up .59". Across the state line in
Tupelo, afternoon storms dropped .80" of rain.
