INCREASING CHANCE FOR RAIN: Showers and thunderstorms developed
rather quickly across North Alabama this afternoon and it did not take
long for several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings to be posted. The storms
formed into several lines that were moving toward the east. This is
all part of the picture for an increased chance for showers and
thunderstorms in Alabama through the weekend. We may have our best
chance of all Saturday and we have lowered our high temperature to the
upper 80s. Even beyond Saturday, it looks like highs will back off a
few degrees to the 90-92 range. Still a pretty good chance of showers
and thunderstorms on Sunday. After that, they should become more
scattered Monday and Tuesday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Widespread showers and thunderstorms were
occurring across the SE Bahamas and Eastern Cuba into the Central
Caribbean. Heavy rain and squalls will occur as all this glob moves
WNW 20-25. Upper level winds do not favor tropical cyclone formation
right away. Meanwhile, a west-moving tropical wave way out in the
Atlantic some 1,000 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands. Some slow
development is possible in the next day or so.

A DRY, DRY GULF COAST: The rainfall shortage is tremendous. In
Mobile, the deficiency for 2006 as of today was 21.17 inches. They
have only received 18.75 inches this year. By comparison, Birmingham
has received over twice that much at 38.72. A year ago at this time,
Mobile had been inundated with 50.99 inches. Pensacola is even in
worse shape with only 16.50 inches so far this yearâ??a deficiency of
almost 22 inches.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Seems like everyone is suffering from the heat.
In Britain, an all-time July high temperature of 98 was recorded a few
days ago at Wisley in Surrey. It broke a record that had stood since
1911. Power was cut to thousands in Central London...up to 9 inches of
rain fell yesterday near Cleveland. A fireman drowned as he tried to
perform a water rescue 40 miles SW of Cleveland...how about that LOW
of 102 yesterday morning in Death Valley.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms,
especially Sunday and Monday. The best chance may be on Sunday when
they could become numerous at times. Highs around 88.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am glad Little Miss Molly weighs
only 9 pounds. If she was a golden retriever or great Dane and had as
much energy pound for pound, I don't know what I would do. I could not
keep up with her. We were out walking very early this morning. I
planned to make it a very short walk, but Molly peeked up the walking
track and saw her friend Bridgette a 1/4 mile away. She would not let
me turn back. They gave each other a body over sniff test and rubbed
noses like all dogs like to do...last night Molly demanded to go
outside, but when I offered, she refused. Instead, she was demanding a
ballgame. It was the wildest game we ever had. I was kicking 6 balls
as fast as I could and Molly was going crazy trying to gather them all
up. Both our tongues were hanging out...that little girl's birthday
comes up next month and I will try to spend the whole day with her.
She deserves it. Life goes on.

...Some Sun; A Few Scattered Storms...

This is the time of the year when the weather doesn't change quickly around
here. You can almost count on hot and humid weather conditions, and the
daily risk of a passing shower or storm during the afternoon hours. There
are weather changes, but often they are very hard to identify since they are
very small scale and don't show up on synoptic weather maps.

Perhaps the most interesting feature on the board this morning is the big
mass of moisture just to the west of here, over Arkansas, Mississippi, and
West Tennessee. This is from the old tropical system that was on the Texas
gulf coast earlier this week. That moisture will slowly creep into the
northern half of Alabama today, so we expect to see some increase in the
number of scattered showers and storms this afternoon. It looks like
tomorrow might actually offer the best coverage of showers and storms as the
moisture continues to deepen.

The pool of moisture are will just hang around into next week, and each day
we will mention a chance of scattered afternoon showers or storms statewide.
Temperatures will remain close to normal levels, with highs today mostly in
the low 90s. Some spots might fail to reach 90 tomorrow with some increase
in clouds and showers.

AT THE BEACH: About five to seven hours of sun each day this weekend along
the central Gulf coast with a daily risk of scattered showers and storms.
The best coverage of showers and storms on the coast should be on Sunday.
Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s on the immediate coast, and the sea
water temperature remains close to 90 degrees at Gulf Shores, Pensacola, and
Fort Walton Beach.

TROPICS: A tropical wave in the central Atlantic, about 700 miles southwest
of the Cape Verde Islands, seems to be getting better organized, and upper
air winds could allow a tropical storm to form during the next day or so as
it moves to the west. Another wave is located in the Caribbean, but the
upper air wind profile doesn't favor any immediate organization.

ROAMING: Shreveport, LA was soaked with 3.50" of rain yesterday. Hottest
spot in the nation was Death Valley, California with 122 degrees.

...Tropical Moisture Stays In Place...

A plume of tropical moisture continues to flow into Alabama from a
disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico, on the Texas coast. This flow
should continue for the next few days, and will mean muggy weather for
Alabama with some risk of a shower or storm on a daily basis. The hardest
part of this forecast is determining the coverage of those showers and
storms.

Model data suggests that showers and storms today will remain widely
scattered, but the coverage could increase tomorrow and Saturday as the
moisture deepens. Most of the showers will come during the afternoon and
evening hours, but in a pure tropical airmass like this, we can't rule out a
few late night or morning showers. Temperatures will remain near normal for
late July in Alabama; most spots will see a high somewhere between 89 and 93
over the next few days, with early morning lows in the low 70s.

NEXT WEEK: For now we are expecting typical mid-summer weather through much
of next week, with partly sunny days and the daily risk of scattered
afternoon showers and storms.

TROPICS: The system on the Texas coast is not expected to become a tropical
storm since the center remains over land. A tropical wave is moving into the
far eastern Caribbean this morning, and is producing a fairly large area of
showers and storms. But, upper air winds don't seem especially favorable for
any tropical storm formation in that region for now. The rest of the
Atlantic basin is relatively quiet.

In the Pacific, tropical depression Daniel will brush the Hawaiian Islands
today, but only a little rain and gusty winds are expected. Daniel was a
hurricane a few days ago, but cooler water and dry air entering the system
was responsible for the rapid weakening in recent days.

SOAKING WET: The tropical system on the Texas coast dumped heavy rain in the
general area from Galveston to Lake Charles; Houston's total yesterday was
2.12", while Lake Charles reported 3.76"

HEAT BACKS OFF: Yesterday's high in Phoenix was a "cool" 98 degrees, down
from the 114 they recorded over this past weekend.

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: I am sure you noticed how much greater the
visibility was today. The haze lifted and you can see for many miles.
This is because a tropical air mass has spread northward over the
state from one of our best weather friendsâ€"the Gulf of Mexico. The
bulk of the moisture is around a low pressure system centered over
South Texas. For a time, it was thought that could become a tropical
depression, but too late now.

Across Alabama, showers have not been very prominent today. There will
be some widely scattered to scattered ones, along with some
thunderstorms, over the next 5 to 7 days. Indeed, the forecast sounds
almost the same every day. We do not foresee any blistering hot
weather and the highs on most days will hang pretty close to 90.

Only 7.17 inches of rain has fallen at Black Creek in Etowah County in
the last three months. That is about 10 inches less than at this time
last year. In NE Alabama, 5 miles north of Gaylesville, Ron Haltermon,
reports only 2.18 inches of rain in the last three monthsâ€"since
April 25. He wonders if their close proximity to Lookout Mountain
could be the reason. They are also located on the west slope of Laurel
Mountain. Is that also known as Dirtseller Mountain?

TROPICAL WEATHER: That low that the National Hurricane Center was
concerned about when it was over the West Gulf, was centered between
Houston and San Antonio late this morning. So a tropical cyclone is
out of the question for it. It was dumping heavy rain. A tropical wave
just east of the Lesser Antilles is moving steadily toward the west.
Upper level winds are not friendly enough for this to have tropical
development in the next day or so.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: That was unprecedented heat over Southern
California last weekend. Temperatures peaked as high as 119 at
Woodland Hills, 113 in Beverly Hills, 109 in Pasadena, 112 in Burbank
and Malibu Canyon and 100 in downtown Los Angeles. We have all been
reading about the power outages in California...Phoenix got blasted
last night when wind gusts were clocked to 99 mph at the Phoenix
Airport control tower. Lots of power outages. As much as 2.13 inches
of rain fell at Crossroads Park in the Phoenix metro area...the
hottest temperature ever recorded in Israel was 129 on June 21, 1942
at Tirat Tsvi. The normal high in Jerusalem for July is 87â€"four
degrees cooler than Birmingham. Hottest Tuesday, 126 Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I believe I could get three
times as much done if I didn’t have that pest, Little Miss Molly.
Have you ever felt like you were under surveillance every waking hour?
Even if she is not following me around at my heels, she turns her head
to see my every move if I walk through the living area. She has that
bright-eyed expectant look as if she is asking me to play ball every
single time. Mind you, I would much rather accomplish a lot less and
have that little rascal in my home. She has woven herself into our
lives and we could not do without her...have a friend in Hueytown who
also has a Shih-tzu named Maxwell. She says that he must be just like
Molly, because he can jump the fastest and highest of any critter she
has ever seen...all of us will live 25 years longer with the doggies
keeping us active. Life goes on.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of temperatures very close to normal
for late July and no way to escape having a shower or thunderstorm
somewhere every day for the next 5 to 7 days. In fact, the chance of
rain for any one location is fairly good for the next several days.
This is due to that old frontal boundary that got down close to
Birmingham and is slowly moving back north, leaving in its wake a
moist air mass. The old boundary is somewhere near the Tennessee River
and hard to identify.

So far this afternoon, most of the scattered showers and thunderstorms
have been across the southern part of the state, mainly from
Livingston to Montgomery to Phenix City. Some widely scattered ones
could occur through this evening in other areas.

We are projecting high temperatures for the next 5 days to be
somewhere between 88 and 92. There is a vast amount of tropical
moisture spreading inland on the Texas coast and South Louisiana. Some
of that will curve around and reach this area.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A low pressure area was about 45 miles SW of
Brownsville, Texas centered over NE Mexico. It is generating a lot of
showers and thunderstorms over the Western Gulf and adjacent coastal
areas. Since the center is already over land, a tropical cyclone is
unlikely.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Elevation is the key factor in weather. David
Black interviewed a lady with a resort in Bullhead City, Arizona for
our Weather Brains broadcast this week. The high there yesterday was
120. She told us that you never get used to the heat. How would you
like to have a low of 100? That happened this morning in Death Valley
after a high yesterday of 126...not all of Arizona is hot. In the
White Mountains over on the east side of the state, the high at
Hannagan Meadow was only 76 yesterday with a low of 50 this morning.
That weather station is located at an elevation of 9,160 feet and it
is in an open meadow surrounded by spruce and ponderosa pines. Enjoyed
visiting there once...the lowest temperature in the country this
morning was 43 at West Yellowstone, Mont., and 40 at Barrow,
Alaska...down in Antarctica, it was 103 below zero. The winds are
expected to increase and send their wind chill to colder than 150
below...some of the better rainfall amounts in Alabama yesterday was
1.67 inches at Martin Dam and 2.46 inches in Childersburg.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is so packed with
explosive energy that when the doorbell rang this morning, my wife
fell in the floor trying to grab her. Lucky there were no broken
bones...that little rascal is so smart, that instead of piling all of
her balls together, she now places them at strategic locations where
she can grab one quickly and make me play ball. She even planted one
inside my office. One of our regular readers offered a suggestion on
how to keep dogs calm and collected during thunderstorms. She
suggested playing some music, particularly music that included drums.
She said the music soothes most dogs and they tend to associate the
booms (thunder) with music. She has a 10-year old dog that now rests
through fireworks and thunder. The music also seems to blend with
trucks, loud cars etc. Even when he can hear those scary sounds over
the music, it does not bother him as much as scary sounds in a quiet
house. Life goes on.

...Afternoon Storms Remain Possible...

Our forecast package this morning will highlight pretty typical mid-summer
weather for the next five to seven days. The old surface front that moved
through the state over the weekend is drifting northward, and should
dissipate today. This will leave the state in a humid airmass, and coupled
with the daytime heating process a few scattered afternoon storms will be
possible on a daily basis. The chance of any one spot getting wet over the
next few days is about one in three, and the best chance of showers and
storms will come from about 2:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Temperatures will be close to normal levels for the next several days, with
highs at or just above 90, and morning lows in the low 70s.
YESTERDAY: The mercury failed to reach 90 for the second day in a row in
Birmingham (the high yesterday was 89). Strong storms formed east and south
of Birmingham; Childersburg was soaked with 2.46" of rain. Atop Mount Cheaha
at the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM site, the rain total was 1.33". Our new SKYCAM site
at Gulf Shores measured a peak wind gust of 51 mph during a passing tropical
squall.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for July is 4.22", and the surplus for
the year is 5.66". Of course, not everyone has had that much rain across
Central Alabama.

ACTION IN THE GULF: A disturbance in the southwest Gulf of Mexico has some
potential to develop into a tropical depression today as it moves northward.
Some generous rain totals are likely along the Texas coastal plain, and
across the lower Rio Grande river valley.

WESTERN HEAT: Highs yesterday included 114 at Phoenix, AZ and 126 at Death
Valley, CA.

...Typical summer pattern ahead...

GOOD MORNING: We will head into a typical summertime weather pattern here
in Alabama this week, but not before we have an opportunity for a little
more in the way of welcome rainfall.

TODAY/TOMORROW: Our cold front will move north later today, giving us a
chance of showers and storms. Those showers and storms may be with us
through the overnight and into Tuesday as the front meanders through. With
partly cloudy skies, highs today and Tuesday will be near 90 degrees in most

locations.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: By Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure will be
building across the Gulf Coast. This will lock us into a typical summertime
pattern with partly cloudy skies and scattered afternoon and evening showers
and storms. The patterns looks like it will be with us into the weekend.
Temperatures will run a degree or two above normal. .

EYE ON THE TROPICS: Some misguided people have been fussing that the
forecasts of above normal tropical activity by NOAA and Dr. William Gray
were going to bust. Hello. That's one than no one will mind busting. It's
July. We have already had two. Number three might be cooking up in the
southwest Gulf, but it looks unlikely since it is so close to land. It is a
disturbed area of weather that might be investigated by reconnaissance later
today. Upper level winds are becoming more conducive to development, so we
will be monitoring it as it moves slowly north or northwest. It will likely
spread lots of
rain into Texas and maybe Louisiana.

ON THIS DATE IN 1788: George Washington had retired to Mount Vernon by
1788, when the eye of an early-season hurricane passed directly over his
plantation after moving ashore near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It would
be known as George Washington's Hurricane. Washington was an avid weather
watcher and recorded the event fully in his journal.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a refreshing day across Central Alabama. Not
refreshing in the sense of crisp and clear, but refreshing in the way of
cloudy and relatively cool. A band of high cloudiness along a cold front
has limited out temperature climb. North of the band of clouds, sunshine
has been plentiful, and temperatures have climbed into the middle 80s across
the Tennessee Valley. Under the clouds, readings had just broken the 80
degree mark in places like Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. But sunshine was
increasing in force across the area and readings may still have time to get
close to our original projected high of 89.

RADAR QUIET...FOR NOW: At noon, Doppler radars across Alabama were mostly
silent. How much is that going to change? A few light showers were showing
up in Dallas County and over in Chambers and Tallapoosa County near the
Georgia border. This zone from north of Columbus, GA over to near Selma
should be the favored zone for development this afternoon. Most of the
models keep us dry through the afternoon and overnight. But we can't rule
out a shower or storm, and I will caution that the NAM model does show a few
showers tonight in the I-20 corridor, so I will mention that in the
forecast.

MOVING TOWARD MONDAY: I think moisture creeps back just a bit to the north
tomorrow. As it does, scattered showers and storms will form south of I-20
with only isolated storms to the north. Again, there are hints that a few
showers might form in the I-20 corridor Monday night. Temperatures tomorrow
should top out around 90. .

REST OF THE WEEK: Scattered mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms
should be the weather word on Tuesday as the front meanders north across the

area. I think shower and storms chances will be slightly enhanced on
Wednesday or Thursday as a disturbance currently in the southwestern Gulf of
Mexico moves northward into southern Teas and eventually rounds the ridge of
high pressure along the Gulf Coast. As it does, it could enhance our shower
and storm chances just a bit by then.

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND: By Friday, it is hard to go against a forecast of
scattered afternoon showers and storms, but we will call for high pressure
to build at the surface, limiting our shower and storm chances. Scattered
storms will develop on Saturday, but will be a little more likely on Sunday
as a cold front tries to invade the area from the north.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Tornadoes hit South Carolina in wake of dying
Hurricane Danny, including one that leveled a duplex apartment and killed a
32-year-old woman. A Charlotte, North Carolina, railroad trestle gave way,
plunging a CSX locomotive into Little Sugar Creek. Crew members escaped
unharmed. 6.88 inches of rain fell in Charlotte, breaking the 24 hour
record of 5.91 inches that had been set in July 1944. A record 6.14 inches
fell between midnight at 2 p.m. Up to 10 inches fell in other parts of
south-central North Carolina.
