...Afternoon Storms Remain Possible...

Our forecast package this morning will highlight pretty typical mid-summer
weather for the next five to seven days. The old surface front that moved
through the state over the weekend is drifting northward, and should
dissipate today. This will leave the state in a humid airmass, and coupled
with the daytime heating process a few scattered afternoon storms will be
possible on a daily basis. The chance of any one spot getting wet over the
next few days is about one in three, and the best chance of showers and
storms will come from about 2:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Temperatures will be close to normal levels for the next several days, with
highs at or just above 90, and morning lows in the low 70s.
YESTERDAY: The mercury failed to reach 90 for the second day in a row in
Birmingham (the high yesterday was 89). Strong storms formed east and south
of Birmingham; Childersburg was soaked with 2.46" of rain. Atop Mount Cheaha
at the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM site, the rain total was 1.33". Our new SKYCAM site
at Gulf Shores measured a peak wind gust of 51 mph during a passing tropical
squall.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for July is 4.22", and the surplus for
the year is 5.66". Of course, not everyone has had that much rain across
Central Alabama.

ACTION IN THE GULF: A disturbance in the southwest Gulf of Mexico has some
potential to develop into a tropical depression today as it moves northward.
Some generous rain totals are likely along the Texas coastal plain, and
across the lower Rio Grande river valley.

WESTERN HEAT: Highs yesterday included 114 at Phoenix, AZ and 126 at Death
Valley, CA.
