GOOD AFTERNOON: So far everything is on track with our forecast on this
first Saturday in June. Temperatures were warming nicely toward highs in
the middle 80s across the area with a good deal of sun balanced by a
moderate northerly wind. Our cold front was pushing through the Florida Big
Bend area south of Tallahassee this afternoon. Showers and storms were
accompanying the front.

REST OF AFTERNOON/TONIGHT: Skies should continue to clear over southern and
eastern sections of the area this afternoon, leaving clear and calm
conditions tonight. Lows will drop to around 60 in most areas, with a few
of the normally cooler spots hitting the upper 50s.
SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks to be a very nice day with abundant sunshine, warm
temperatures in the middle 80s and fairly moderate humidity. Throw in a
light north wind and it should be a good day weather wise. We may see some
clouds from a passing disturbance late on Sunday through Sunday night, but
any precipitation is expected to stay north of us.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Alabama will remain in northwesterly flow on the back side
of a large East Coast trough. This will keep us in a mostly dry weather
regime, although a thunderstorm complex or two could be aimed at us from
time to time. Temperatures will slowly climb, with readings back in the
upper 80s to near 90 by midweek.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Just three days into the 1995 Atlantic Hurricane
Season, Allison formed in the Caribbean and moved northward toward the
Florida coast, making landfall near Alligator Point early on June 5th. This
was only the beginning. There were a total of 19 named storms, 11 of which
reached hurricane strength. Only two seasons have seen more named storms:
1933 with 21 named storms and last year with an amazing 27 named storms.

The 1995 Atlantic Hurricane Season marked the beginning of the current trend
of increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin. The increase is part
of the multidecadal oscillation, regular cycle that sees warming of the
waters of the Atlantic basin that lasts about 15-20 years.
ON THIS DATE IN 1979: The roof of the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri
collapsed during a strong thunderstorm. Luckily, the facility was empty
when the roof fell.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: The Grand Island, NE area is plagued by a slow moving
supercell thunderstorm that produced 7 tornadoes in three hours. One of the
twisters was an F4 while 3 others were F3. 5 fatalities and 193 injuries
resulted from the storm. Damage: $300 million.

ON THIS DATE IN 1860: The Great Camanche Tornado or the Great Tornado of
the Northwest was actually a family of twisters that moved across Iowa and
Illinois. It was one of the most damaging tornado families ever to strike
the US and resulted in more farm fatalities than any other tornado except
for the TriState tornado. The town of Camanche Iowa on the Mississippi
River was completely destroyed. A total of 175 people were killed and 329
were injured. Total damage $945,000.

...Less Humid...

GOOD MORNING: What do you do if you want a tardy cold front to get a little
hurry up in its giddy up? Make fun of it. Yesterday, I compared our cold
front to an AMTRAK train. It would get here, eventually. Well, that did
the trick and the boundary showed up pretty much on schedule.

AHHHH: Temperatures this morning have already fallen back into the lower
60s across the area. That is not that much colder than the past few days,
and it is certainly a lot cooler than the normal low of 63, but we will take
it. And get ready for a few more degrees of early June delight tonight when
the mercury hits the upper 50s in several locations across the area.

BUSTED TEMPERATURE FORECAST: I didn't trust the model output statistics
from the two major numerical weather prediction models Thursday night when
they called for several hours of morning sunshine on Friday. I stuck with
my temperature forecast of 82 for the daytime high. Missed it by 6 degrees
with all of the sunshine. The abundant sunshine helped us get enough
instability to get some decent but relatively gentle thunderstorms and
rainfall.

FORECAST IN A NUTSHELL: : Exactly what is a nutshell? Anyway, expect lots
of sunshine and slightly lower humidities. Temperatures will rise into the
middle 80s despite a fresh north breeze. Tomorrow night, with clear and
calm conditions, temperatures will make the upper 50s in many locations.
Sunday looks partly cloudy and warm. Expect fifties again Monday morning.
Next rain chance: late in the week. .

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: June snow in Southern California is a rare event,
indeed, only occurring in the mountains of Los Angeles County a few times in
recorded history. Light snow was reported at Frazier Park, north of Los
Angeles on this date. The snow melted on contact with the ground and there
was no accumulation. The high temperature at Mount Wilson, CA was only 38
degrees breaking the record for the coldest high temperature in June of 43
degrees from June 7, 1968.

MUCH NICER AFTER SOME STORMS: Thunderstorms were breaking out
across NW Alabama this afternoon and several have become severe. Trees were
uprooted in the Tuscumbia area early this afternoon. Several Severe
Thunderstorm Warnings have already been issued mainly over the extreme north
and NW.

These thunderstorms will continue to move east and spread southward
for the remainder of this afternoon and into the evening. They should
diminish by late tonight as cooler air moves in from the NW.

Practically all of the showers and storms across Central Alabama
should be over by midnight or later.

THE WEEKEND: Looks real good. Clearing early Saturday and mostly
sunshine for the rest of the day and all day Sunday. The humidity will be
much lower and there will be a nice north breeze both days. With a lower
humidity, the highs in the mid 80s will feel quite comfortable. Early
morning lows will be in the upper 50s. A warming trend will start Monday,
but both Monday and Tuesday should also be dry.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Only a small risk of a shower or storm
Saturday. Sunday should be dry and that dry weather should last into the
early part of next week. Highs will be consistently in the upper 80s.

DATELINE TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES: That is in New Mexico, of course,
but something a bit odd happened there yesterday. During a heavy rainstorm,
there was so much hail that it destroyed the rain gauge, so they don't know
the final total...other notes from all over...numerous house fires yesterday
in New England, mainly in Massachusetts, all caused by lightning...660
inches of snow this winter at Mt. Hood Meadows in Oregon-well above
normal...Phoenix will have a bad weekend with the thermometer. It is
expected to reach 112 Saturday and 113 Sunday, which will make it the
hottest start for June on record...114 in Death Valley was yesterday's
hottest...coolest this morning was Yellowstone National Park with 30...2.72
inches of rain in North Auburn yesterday...part of NW Alabama may have
gotten over 5 inches...a wind gust of 67 mph was recorded at Hampton Cove
Middle School in Huntsville yesterday afternoon...the Huntsville area also
had a couple of house fires caused by lightning on Tuesday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was a nice walk with Little Miss
Molly early this morning. Often she will take off up the walk like she is
trying to pull a heavily loaded wagon. This morning she was in the opposite
mood taking her own good time...it was 3 steps forward and 5 steps backward.
She had to sniff every little item on the walk. That makes it easier on me,
because often my tongue is hanging out when we get home...we saw one baby
lizard. The only down side was a lone pesky gnat that followed me the whole
time. He kept circling my head. I swung at him at least 15 times with
Molly's little blue scoop, but I ended up with a batting average exactly
.000. After we got home, Molly was immediately ready for a ballgame, so I
gave in and played several innings. Life goes on despite all the nuisances
such as gnats, spiders and fire ants.

===================================================================

...The Boss Is Away...

BUT it is not a time for us to play in the Weather Office. In fact, just
keeping up with the work that James does every day is amazing. He is up
with the chickens doing live radio. That job falls to J.B. this week. He
always sounds and looks so chipper in the morning map discussion and handles
one in the afternoon too. Brian has been covering those. There are radio
cuts for eighteen stations due by 1 p.m. and by 4 a.m. J.B. and I have been
handling those. Believe, doing weather all the way from Sierra Vista,
Arizona to Brunswick, Georgia can be challenging! Then there is the evening
forecast package James does, which I have had the privilege of doing, and
television that John has been covering. You can appreciate what a great job
James does when you break it down. But I know I am preaching to the choir
when I tell you that...

FRONTAL POSSIBILITIES: For the past seven days, we have been advertising
the possibility of a front. It is beginning to act like an AMTRAK train,
getting later with each passing forecast. It is expected to arrive late
tonight or Saturday morning. Ahead of it, showers and storms will become
numerous today and most everyone should get a decent amount of rain. Some
of the storms could be strong, but significant severe weather is not
expected.

THE WEEKEND: Skies should clear on Saturday, and you will notice the
difference in humidity. The drier and slightly cooler air will allow for
some more comfortable overnight readings. Look for 62 Saturday morning (if
front is on time) and 58 Sunday morning. Daytime highs will be more like
normal for this time of year. A gradual warm up will allow the mercury to
slide up through the 80s and approach 90 by the middle of next week. The
models develop a low over Georgia late in the weekend, and we could see a
shower by Monday or so.

TROPICS: The GFS develops one of its dubious tropical lows over the western
Caribbean late in the weekend and moves it northeast across Cuba and over
the Bahamas before heading it out to sea next week. Hmmm...

==================================================================

SOME MUCH NEEDED RAIN AHEAD: There are places in Alabama that are
crying for rain and other places that are not so bad off. In the hot humid
air across the state this afternoon, a few showers and storms were
developing. Those should increase some late today and tonight. It still
looks like Friday will be our best day to get some beneficial rain as a cold
front gets closer to the state.

Highs Friday will only be in the low and mid 80s due mainly to an
increase in clouds and showers instead of cooler air. Cooler air will be
moving in bringing clearing weather early Saturday.

THE WEEKEND: Both Saturday and Sunday look like they will be the
most pleasant days we have had in quite some time with mostly sunshine,
lower humidity, highs in the mid 80s and cooler nights.

MIXED UP MONTH OF MAY: There were really two separate parts to May.
Let's use the official temperatures at Anniston Airport as an example.
During a 13-day period from May 5 through the 17th, the temperature only
reached 80 one time. There was a big change starting May 18 and the last 12
days of the month featured 90 degrees or higher every single day.

SCANNING THE GLOBE: This afternoon temperatures in Iraq reached 115
at Basrah. The humidity was only 5%...here in the USA the hottest Wednesday
was 109 in Death Valley...West Yellowstone, Montana was the coldest in the
lower 48 this morning with 24...tremendous rains have continued along the
Texas coast. Would you believe that Corpus Christi got 11.51 inches of rain
in only 10 hours during the night? That is an all-time record even for 24
hours which was 8.07 on June 27, 1931...Houston also getting way too much
rain.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Most of the time, that is, but an odd
thing happened on this date in 1980 at Falmouth, Massachusetts. A blind man
was struck by lightning and his sight was restored. He had been blind and
partially deaf since a truck accident 9 years before.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Starting today the National Hurricane Center will
issue a tropical weather outlook four times a day. Nothing going on today.
That upper low that has caused all the rain on the Texas coast will be
lifted toward the NE by an approaching upper air system giving a whole bunch
of Texans a chance to dry out.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am certain that Little Miss Molly
and I encountered our first mosquito on a night walk. I am usually a real
marksman with Molly's little blue scoop, but I missed that one. A neighbor
reports that she has been bitten twice already this season and she is going
to start wearing a sheet of fabric softener to keep them at bay. A lot of
our neighbors do that. They recommended that I rub Little Miss Molly with a
sheet of it too...sure made up a lot of time with Molly late last night and
this morning playing ball. She now wants me to throw all 5 balls at one
time. They scatter all over the place and she goes berserk. Life goes on in
our little minor league and our little tiny corner of the world. Much rather
be here than in a huge megatropolis.

...Welcome To Summer...

GOOD MORNING: Well, meteorological summer, that is. By the calendar,
summer doesn't begin for nearly another three weeks, but in the
weatherperson's book, today marks the start of summer.

HURRICANE SEASON TOO: June 1 also marks the beginning of the North
Atlantic basin hurricane season. It seems like just yesterday we were
putting the 2005 season to bed. It very nearly was, since Tropical Storm
Zeta did not die until January 6th of this year. We literally had
hurricanes from A to Z, and that is something given that the regular list
does not use the letters X, Y or Z. As you remember, we had to go to the
Greek alphabet for the first time ever when Tropical Storm Alpha formed on
October 22nd.

A LITTLE RELIEF IN SIGHT: Someone asked me if it was going to get cooler
this weekend. Well, a little. It is not going to feel like January, but we
could use lower humidity and a few less 90 degree readings. We may have
seen our last high of 90 for awhile. A cold front will approach Alabama
today and slide across the state on Friday. By Saturday, it will be joining
vacationers along the Gulf Coast.

STORMS AHEAD: : Skies should be partly cloudy. Storms may reach
northwestern sections during the afternoon hours and isolated storms will
occur elsewhere. Those storms will be increasing across the area tonight
and tomorrow. Highs on Friday will stay closer to 80 than 90. With the
front through the area, lows on Friday night will make the lower 60s.

WEEKEND: Picture perfect Alabama weather this weekend, with partly cloudy
skies, lots of sunshine, warm days and comfortable nights. In the wake
of the cold front, we will enjoy more seasonable readings, with 80s for
highs and even a few 50s for lows well into next week.

==================================================================

LOTS OF HAZE AND HUMIDITY: But not for too long. We are still
advertising a cold front moving through Central Alabama later Friday and
Friday night dropping the humidity considerably over the weekend and
bringing mostly sunshine Saturday and Sunday. That front should also do away
with a lot of the haze.

We are stretching a point to call it a cold front. It is actually a
dividing line between much drier air and the moist air we have along with a
drop in temperature. After today, we should be through with 90s for a while.
This will be due to an increase in showers and thunderstorms Thursday and
Friday followed by cooler air on Saturday.

HOW COOL WILL IT GET? Well, you won't need a sweater or light
jacket, but nighttime temperatures will drop as low as 60 to 62. We may hear
of some upper 50s in places like Bridgeport, Hamilton and Gadsden. Most of
the showers and thunderstorms will occur later in the day Thursday and
Thursday night and extending well into Friday. Not out of the question that
some communities could receive around 1 inch of rain. Most people will be
glad to see that.

A HISTORIC DISASTER: It occurred on this date in 1889 in Johnstown,
Pennsylvania. Two days of very heavy rain made the dam at the South Fork
Fishing and Hunting Club give way. The dam was 14 miles from Johnstown and
450 feet higher. The wall of water was 75 feet high and one-half mile wide
coming down the Little Conemaugh River. The entire lake emptied in 36
minutes flowing downhill as fast as Niagara Falls. Most of Johnstown was
destroyed as the huge wall of water and debris roared in at 4:07pm. More
than 2,200 people died in the disaster. Some of the people burned to death
when huge piles of debris caught fire.

THREE-DOT STUFF: Alf van Hoose, legendary sports editor of the
Birmingham News, did a lot of writing with incomplete sentences to save
space. I need to save space, so here we go...heavy hail, Elbert County,
Colorado caused vehicles to skid off the roads yesterday...2-inch hail
accumulations around Lubbock, Texas...12 inches of rain this month in Boston
and Portland...76 mph wind gust, Childress, Texas...3.25 inches of rain in
Houston Heights overnight...lots of flooding continues in the Houston
area...29 was the Alaska low at Barrow, which was 7 degrees warmer than 22
at Big Piney, Wyoming...snow melted quicker than usual across
Alaska...Barrow only has 4 inches remaining...108 was the USA high Tuesday
at Castolon in the Big Bend area of SW Texas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: There are times when I get so busy
that I don't have time to play with Little Miss Molly, my 9-pound stick
tight pal. You can bet she knows it and eventually she will get very
assertive...I sat down on the couch for a cup of coffee with the Birmingham
News at 9:02am. 5 seconds later Molly became airborne and threw one of her
balls in my lap. She gathered up 5 more and deposited them at my feet. How
is a guy going to get a break without feeling guilty? She has learned to
field the ball almost like a major league baseball player, so we had a long
game after only 3 sips of coffee. Little Miss Molly needs a haircut. Since
she is solid black except for a white strip on her chest, she gets hot in
the middle of the day walks, so we have shortened those. Life goes on.

...The Heat Backs Off Tomorrow...

Another "triple H" day is ahead for Alabama. The weather today will be hot,
hazy, and humid. And, like yesterday, a few storms might pop up during the
heat of the day, but those storms should be few and far between.
Temperatures should reach the low 90s in most places.

HEAT RELIEF: The heat will slowly back off tomorrow and Friday thanks to
increased coverage of showers and thunderstorms as an early June cold front
approaches Alabama from the north. That front is forecast to pass through
the state late in the day Friday, reaching Mobile by early Saturday morning.

A DRY WEEKEND: Drier air will cover the northern two-thirds of Alabama over
the weekend, meaning lower humidity, cooler nights, and no rain. Daytime
temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 80s, but early morning
temperatures will drop into the low 60s. Some of the cooler spots over North
Alabama might even wind up in the upper 50s by early Sunday morning.

WATCHING THE GULF: A broad area of low pressure continues over the western
Gulf of Mexico, and there is some chance an early season tropical depression
could form today. Even if the system remains disorganized, bands of heavy
rain will continue to impact the Texas Gulf coast during at least the 36
hours, and flash flood watches remain in effect there.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine for the central Gulf coast through mid-week;
highs will be in the mid to upper 80s and the water temperature is now near
80 degrees. Any showers will be isolated today and tomorrow. Scattered
storms will increase a bit along the coast by the weekend thanks to the
surface front which should stall over deep South Alabama.
