==================================================================

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT THROUGH THIS EVENING... An interesting situation across Alabama on this Saturday before Mothers Day. The mid levels of the atmosphere are very cold. A persistent band of cloudiness and rain showers continues across Tuscaloosa, western Jefferson, Hale, Bibb and Shelby Counties and points southeast. This is along an outflow boundary from this mornings storms.

MODERATE INSTABILITY: The morning runs of the ETA model predict CAPE's of over 2000 j/kg between mid-afternoon and sunset over parts of North Alabama. The model predicts that Lifted Index values will be as low as -6C by late afternoon. This will lead to the development of thunderstorms with very vigorous updrafts.

DECENT SHEAR/STEP LAPSE RATES: Shear in the atmosphere will be sufficient to create sustained updrafts and with steep lapse rates, large hail will develop. Expect stones to the size of golfballs with the stronger storms. There is also a threat of damaging winds will lots of dry air aloft. There will be reports of wind damage. Tornadoes should not be much of a threat. The activity will increase during the evening hours as a cold front approaches from the north. The activity will continue until midnight or so.

DAY ONE OUTLOOK: Most of Alabama is included in a Slight Risk category on the Day Out Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. To the west, the SPC says they are considering an upgrade to a moderate risk if instability levels are higher than expected over the Lower Mississippi Valley back into Texas.

UNSETTLED WEATHER TO CONTINUE: huge upper level low pressure system over the Great Lakes is our weather maker. And it is not going anywhere fast. It is expected to rotate down into the Ohio Valley. As it does, spokes of low pressure will rotate around the main low. This will lead to occasional bouts with showers into early next week. Even as the upper low begins to move east by Tuesday, it will leave a big trough of low pressure over the eastern United States. This means a good bit of cloudiness, cool temperatures running some 10-15F below normal and a chance of showers each day.

By Thursday, high pressure will begin to assert itself over the Gulf of Mexico. As it does, it will hold back a cold front that will be attempting to gain access to our area. This means increasingly nice weather as we head into the end of the week with warmer temperatures and more sunshine.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An F3 tornado ripped directly through the center of Kalamazoo MI, killing five and injuring seventy nine. The tornado passed directly over the American Bank, where a barograph reported a pressure drop of 0.59 inches. Remember when tornado safety rules told us to open a window if a tornado approaches? Bad advice. DonÂ’t do it. The pressure drop in a tornado is fortunately spread over a few seconds, which give most buildings and homes time to equalize the air pressure. The potential from damage by wind getting into the building is infinitely greater than the threat from the pressure drop.

...The Year Of Hai...

GOOD MORNING: I donÂ’t think that I ever remember having this much hail in Alabama during a Spring season. It seems that every storm system has been accompanied by significant amounts of hail. Today will be another example of that, with cold temperatures aloft contributing to the formation of hail. Some of it could be on the large side. The limiting factor today will be surface based moisture. But there should be enough present to get some pretty good showers and a few storms going. Those that do fire up will have the chance to produce pretty good hail.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: That big monster low continues to spin over the Great Lakes this morning. It looks more like a big egg than a circle. It is going to pinwheel a little to the south over the next 48 hours, winding up over Kentucky. As it does, spokes of energy will rotate around the center. One of those today is responsible for the energy today. As a surface low moves to our northeast, it will push a cold front down into the state. I expect that it will become cloudy overnight tonight. Lows should drop into the middle 50s. A few more showers may accompany the front as it passes. Sunday looks like it will feature mostly cloudy skies. The front should stall just south of Birmingham. Temperatures will not make it into the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Temperatures will remain substantially below normal over the next few days. 60s may be the temperature of the day both Monday and Tuesday. A few showers are possible at just about any time through Thursday. High pressure over the northern Gulf will put an end to the showers by Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Two brothers hiking with their family in Zion National Park in Utah were swept away when flash flooding suddenly struck after a burst of heavy rain. The youngsters were ahead of the rest of their family when they came to a part of the trail that was underwater. They were swept away as they attempted the cross the flooded part of the trail. The ten year was swept over a ledge and fell 100 feet to his death. The 5 year old clung to a tree and was rescued.

WEEKEND WEATHER CHANGES: Here we go again with some more fast turnaround changes in our weather. Who could complain about todayÂ’s weather, unless you were addicted to swimming. A bit chilly for that, especially with a brisk wind.

A huge and major low pressure area, both at the surface and aloft, were centered over Lake Michigan today. We can point our fingers at that one feature and place blame for our changing weather for the weekend. A series of disturbances aloft will rotate around that big system and cause the air to become more unstable around Alabama. Temperatures aloft over the state will drop considerably.

Also, a cold front will push into the state and move through the Birmingham area at some point Saturday and early Sunday.

The combination of all of this will cause some scattered showers and thunderstorms across Central Alabama, mainly late Saturday and Saturday night.
By midday Sunday, most of the showers should be to our south.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has all of Alabama except the Tennessee Valley under a slight risk of severe weather during that time. We believe that the main threat will be from hail. Even low-top thunderstorms may contain some hail when the atmosphere aloft gets that cold and unsettled.

Our well below normal temperatures will continue for at least the next 5 to 7 days. In times past we have had some blistering hot weather in May. In 1962, record high temperatures were set on 16 of the 31 days, topping out at 98 degrees several days toward the end of the month and 99 on May 28 and 29.

FRIDAY NOTES: That big storm system over the Great Lakes, which looks somewhat like an inland tropical storm on satellite photographs, is causing problems over a wide area. Wind gusts as high as 69 mph were recorded near Muskegon, Michigan and there was snow in Upper Michigan and Northern Wisconsin.

Near Allegan, Michigan, one person was killed and one injured when high winds blew a large tree limb across their passing vehicle...I thought it was interesting that the wind chill dropped to an amazing 137 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica when the temperature fell to 104...some of the lowest temperatures in Alabama this morning included 42 in Hamilton, 43 in DeSoto State Park and Cottondale, 45 in crossville, Cullman and Centreville and 46 in Ft. Payne.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have received several very interesting e-mails about our Miss Molly stories in the last few days, bringing the total to nearly 3,000 in the last three years. It is so good to know that these stories have touched a lot of people. I will do a special story on one of those early next week. It is another case where I shed some tears even though I am a grown person (many times over) and emotionally strong...Little Miss Molly has almost abandoned her other balls and only wants to play with her two new larger ones that she sometimes loses control of running across the floor...she even stumbles over the ball at times. Life goes on

...A Cool Pattern For May...

The calendar says May, but weather maps look more like January this morning.
A deep upper low is setting up shop north of Alabama, and won't budge much
over the next five days. This will mean below normal temperatures, cloudy
periods, and a few showers along the way.

TODAY: We should enjoy a good supply of sunshine today across Alabama with
highs in the low 70s, almost ten degrees below normal for mid-May. The
humidity will be low, and visibility will be excellent.

THE WEEKEND: Clouds will slip into the state, and a disturbance rotating
around the upper low will bring the chance of a few showers late tomorrow
and tomorrow night. Some scattered light rain could linger into Sunday
morning. Rainfall amounts should be light and spotty, and there is no chance
of severe weather.

We should mention, however, that the air aloft will be extremely cold this
weekend, and even light rain showers might produce some small hail in
scattered spots.

Another shot of cool air moves in here Sunday, keeping highs only in the
60s. We should drop into the 40s both Monday and Tuesday morning. A few
widely scattered showers, or patches or light rain are possible early next
week, mainly north of Birmingham.

MAY SNOW? The highest elevations of the Great Smoky mountains in East
Tennessee and western North Carolina might see a few snow flakes by Sunday
night and early Monday.

BAMA TORNADO: A survey team from the NWS determined damage in Marengo County
between Jefferson and Linden was from an F1 tornado, on the ground for 1.4
miles Wednesday afternoon around 3:00.

...Cooler and Drier Weather...

After a story Wednesday, cooler and drier air will roll into Alabama today
on brisk winds out of the northwest. With a partly sunny sky, highs today
will be in the low to mid 70s. Temperatures will drop quickly tonight, and
by daybreak tomorrow morning many places will be in the mid to upper 40s
with a clear sky.

We will enjoy a good supply of sunshine tomorrow with comfortable
temperatures.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: Clouds return on Saturday, and a few showers are possible
by the afternoon hours as another cold front pushes through the state.
Rainfall amounts probably won't be all that heavy, and we don't expect any
severe weather. Then, unusually cool air for May will spill in here by
Sunday.

Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s Sunday afternoon, and there
will be cloudy periods and even a chance of some light rain, making for a
rather blustery day.

Temperatures by early Monday morning of next week will drop into the low
40s, and some upper 30s will be possible in the colder spots over North
Alabama.

This is record low territory for this time of the year. Temperatures should
stay below normal for much of next week.

BIG STORMS: Thunderstorms produced strong winds in parts of Alabama
yesterday, knocking down trees and power lines in some areas. A tornado
touched down in southwest Alabama's Clarke County, causing damage to a meat
packing plant in the community of Tallahatta Springs.

ANOTHER SOAKING: Rain totals yesterday included 2.37" at Demopolis, 2.08" at
Tuscaloosa, 1.62" at Riverchase, 1.37" at Gadsden, and 1.31" at Inverness in
Shelby County.
