...The Year Of Hai...
GOOD MORNING: I dont think that I ever remember having this much hail in Alabama during a Spring season. It seems that every storm system has been accompanied by significant amounts of hail. Today will be another example of that, with cold temperatures aloft contributing to the formation of hail. Some of it could be on the large side. The limiting factor today will be surface based moisture. But there should be enough present to get some pretty good showers and a few storms going. Those that do fire up will have the chance to produce pretty good hail.
REST OF THE WEEKEND: That big monster low continues to spin over the Great Lakes this morning. It looks more like a big egg than a circle. It is going to pinwheel a little to the south over the next 48 hours, winding up over Kentucky. As it does, spokes of energy will rotate around the center. One of those today is responsible for the energy today. As a surface low moves to our northeast, it will push a cold front down into the state. I expect that it will become cloudy overnight tonight. Lows should drop into the middle 50s. A few more showers may accompany the front as it passes. Sunday looks like it will feature mostly cloudy skies. The front should stall just south of Birmingham. Temperatures will not make it into the 70s.
NEXT WEEK: Temperatures will remain substantially below normal over the next few days. 60s may be the temperature of the day both Monday and Tuesday. A few showers are possible at just about any time through Thursday. High pressure over the northern Gulf will put an end to the showers by Friday.
ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Two brothers hiking with their family in Zion National Park in Utah were swept away when flash flooding suddenly struck after a burst of heavy rain. The youngsters were ahead of the rest of their family when they came to a part of the trail that was underwater. They were swept away as they attempted the cross the flooded part of the trail. The ten year was swept over a ledge and fell 100 feet to his death. The 5 year old clung to a tree and was rescued.
