GREAT WEATHER FOR FOOTBALL: Let's get the football weather out of
the way first. For the high school playoff games tonight, it will be
clear, but rather chilly with temperatures around 52 at kickoff
dropping into the 40s. In college football Saturday, Auburn will play
Alabama in Tuscloosa at 2:30. Mostly sunny weather with about 64
degrees at kickoff, but dropping into the 50s in the second half. UAB
is in Hattiesburg playing Southern Miss in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. About
58 at the opening whistle and near 50 by the end.

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Those cold fronts out of the far north seem
to have taken a liking for Alabama. We have had a whole series of them
in the past several weeks. Some of them bring a lot of heavy rain and
Wednesday we had an overdose of severe weather. The NWS, in a midday
statement, reports 8 confirmed tornadoes in 7 different counties
across Central and SE Alabama. The survey is subject to change,
because they are very busy gathering a lot of extra details to crank
in to the report.

Temperatures by morning will drop into the low and mid 30s. Saturday
will have highs in the low to mid 60s with more sun than clouds.
Another in those series of cold fronts will move quickly through
Central Alabama Saturday night and Sunday. Clouds will be in and out
on Sunday. There could even be a few sprinkles and highs will barely
get across the 50-degree mark. Even colder on Monday. The latest raw
data seems to downplay any precipitation for Monday, but over the
ridges of East-Central and NE Alabama, such as Mt. Cheaha, Sand
Mountain and Lookout Mountain, there could be some brief light drizzle
or maybe even a few snowflakes. Don't go out and buy a bunch of
bread, milk and pop tarts. No big deal.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 90% of Canada is covered by snow and almost
all of Alaska, except a small strip along the Pacific Coast and out
across the Aleutians. It is getting progressively colder in the
Arctic. It was 29 below zero at Delta Junction, Alaska this morning
and 33 below at Mayo and Dawson in the Canadian Yukon. Over on the ice
cap of Greenland, it was 69 below zero with a wind chill of 100 below.
Juneau, Alaska has 28 inches of snow on the ground…Seattle has been
flooded with 11.63 inches of rain in the first 16 days of November…the
tragic tornadoes in North Carolina early yesterday are too sad to
think about. There were 8 fatalities in Columbus County near
Wilmington, but 4 children are hospitalized in critical condition.
Time to crank out some prayers.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In our early morning walk, we noticed
literally thousands of leaves on the ground. Little Miss Molly loves
to go plodding across the ground covered by leaves…the CC (Community
Cat) was sitting in the wet grass near the north end of the walking
track. I lifted Little Miss Molly up so she could see further and see
the cat. It was just like sticking a match to a Roman candle. She
literally jumped out of my arms and temporarily pulled me over on my
knees, but I held on. It was all I could do to keep up with her, but
the cat had scrambled. When Molly got to where it was, she got into a
frenzy trying to sniff the track. I bet I reversed directions 10
times. We paused by the Old Crow Motel, as we always do, and I
actually counted about 45 leaves—all that is left in the rooms (well,
on the branches). Life goes on and I have to move fast with my little
pal....

JUST WHAT WE NEED—A STRETCH OF DRY DAYS: One of our computer models
is projecting a chance of at least some light rain on Monday. We are
going to disregard that at the moment, because it looks like we will
have a steady flow of cool dry air from the NW. Yesterday's big storms
moved out last evening, but circulation around a big low pressure area
gave us a hangover of clouds today and some downright miserable
weather. Temperatures this afternoon were equally as chilly as we
often have on a mid winter day. The thermometer could not get out of
the 40s and this was accompanied by brisk west winds gusting over 25
mph at times along with some intermittent light rain and drizzle. The
sky should clear late tonight, or at least by daybreak. After that,
look for lots of sunshine on most days and dry weather all the way
through the weekend. Another cold front will come in Saturday night or
Sunday morning bringing some even colder temperatures. We are calling
for highs in the upper 40s Sunday and Monday and a low of 32 Monday
morning. For the Alabama-Auburn game in Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon,
it should be mostly sunshine with about 65 degrees at kickoff, but
dropping into the 50s in the second half.

YESTERDAY'S VIOLENT WEATHER: We are, oh, so fortunate that we had no
fatalities. A number of tornadoes touched down—mainly from the
Montgomery area east and southward. The NWS has four survey teams
working today. Early survey reports are in and four tornadoes have
been confirmed—one in extreme SE Pike County, two in Montgomery County
and one in Chambers County. Remember, there may be others, because the
survey is far from complete. The tornado in the eastern city limits of
Montgomery had a path of 6.5 miles and was rated an F2.

DOES ANYONE NEED RAIN? A tremendous statewide drenching again
yesterday. We have had a lot of those in the last several weeks. The
$264 question is: does anybody want or need any additional rain. We
have a complete list of rainfall totals on our blog, but here are a
few of the heavier amounts: 5.65 inches in Childersburg, 6.50 in
Plantersville, 4.50 at Valley Grande north of Selma, 3.93 at Atmore,
5.50 at White City in Autauga County, 3.63 at Ashland. Over 3 inches
in North Auburn, Bankhead Lock and Dam, Centre, Roanoke, Holt, Martin
Dam, Jordan Dam, Brewton and 3.39 inches at Atmore.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Same storm system that gave us a lot of
headaches Wednesday produced some violent tornadoes in Columbus
County, North Carolina around 7 this morning. 7 confirmed deaths and
there may be more…tornado watches this afternoon up the Atlantic Coast
as far north as Philadelphia…it was zero in Gunnison, Colorado this
morning…28 below at Gulkana, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Was at Channel 33/40 doing radio
weather most of yesterday. I finally went 37 hours with no sleep. I
got home and sat on the couch and was out like a light in one minute.
Little Miss Molly did not accept that. When I came in, she became so
excited that she was vibrating all over. For the rest of the evening,
she stayed within a few feet of me. She kept jumping up on the couch
where I was taking a power nap. Only thing, she had a ball in her
mouth. Translation: I don't care how tired you are, big guy, it's my
playtime. After I went to bed, she hopped up on the bed after I was
asleep and curled up right by my head on my pillow. I didn't even know
it. She desperately missed me, but life goes on...

The Ides of November have produced a couple of significant tornado
outbreaks across the United States, most notably, the 1989 outbreak
that produced the Huntsville Tornado. That tornado killed a total of
21 people as it roared out of an inky, black late afternoon sky and
descended with a hellish fury on unsuspecting motorists stuck in rush
hour traffic. In it interesting to note that on November 15, 1987,
1988 and 1989, significant tornado outbreaks happened in the U.S.

BACK TO TODAY: For about a week, we have been monitoring this
situation. The models did a good job portraying the powerful low over
the Mississippi Valley that is roaring northeastward today. The low
bottomed out at a central pressure of 29.27 inches, close to what you
would expect in a category one hurricane. The low has slowed its
progress a bit and the line of storms that has been marching eastward
has slowed also.

BULLET DODGED: It looks like North Alabama is mostly dodging a
bullet, with no significant severe weather reported. A huge rain mass
over South and South Central Alabama robbed most of the strong inflow
of moisture and instability, helping to limit the storms' intensity
over North Alabama. Some trees were reported down in Pickens County.
. Some structures were damaged by wind in Lawrence and Limestone
Counties. But our friends in the northern half of the state were
lucky with just spotty damage The system is turning into a prolific
rain producer. Very heavy rainfall amounts are coming out of Central
Alabama, where numerous flash flood warnings are in effect.

DAMAGE REPORTED: Folks in South Central Alabama were not as lucky.
Significant tornado damage has been reported from the Pintlala area of
southern Montgomery County. A possible tornado also touched down in
the Taylor Road area of eastern Montgomery. Other possible tornadoes
were reported near Brundidge, just south of Lake Martin near Eclectic,
at Lafayette in Chambers County and in the Mount Andrew in Barbour
County.

MOVING AHEAD: Additional storms were trying to fire over eastern
Mississippi at mid-afternoon. They will push east ahead of the slow
moving cold front. There may be some temporary clearing this
afternoon, but low clouds will wrap back into the area tonight around
the big upper level low over southern Arkansas. Temperatures will
fall into the lower 40s tonight. Tomorrow looks like a raw day with
clouds, a biting west wind and maybe a little light rain or drizzle.
Skies should clear tomorrow night and readings will drop into the
middle 30s, with a few normally colder locations approaching freezing.
Friday looks like a nice day with sunny skies and a high near 60s.
Saturday looks good for the Iron Bowl with temperatures in the lower
60s under a sunny sky.

Morning Edition For Wednesday November 15, 2006

LOOKING FOR AN ALARM SYSTEM?
CALL PRESTIGE ALARMS--WE ARE DIFFERENT.
GIVE US A CHANCE!

Prestige Alarm specializes in monitoring security systems without the use of
expensive phone lines or unreliable cell phones.

How do we do this? Prestige Alarm is one of the few companies who monitors
with an UL listed FCC licensed radio network.
In a typical system, if your phone line is cut or fails, then you have no
communication to the outside world.

Since we do not use phone lines, we can still dispatch the fire or police
when the emergency requires. Despite cut phone lines, storms or over worked
cell phones, we still get the signal through.

We do not offer the free systems like some of the other security companies.
But you do not want to trust in free equipment to protect the people who are
close to you.

Call Prestige Alarm today to get the best alarm for your business or home.

...A Major Severe Weather Threat Today...

ALL EYES ON THE SKY TODAY: Ingredients are coming together for the potential
for a significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms across Alabama today. A
dynamic upper air trough, featuring winds of well over 100 knots at jet
stream level (25,000 to 30,000 feet) will approach from the west, and
unstable air will be pulled northward toward a deep surface low developing
between Little Rock and Memphis. Dewpoints in the 60s should move up into
the northern half of the state, making for a relatively unstable atmosphere.

By late morning, thunderstorms will increase in both coverage and intensity
across the entire state, and those storms will be capable of producing
isolated tornadoes thanks to a very favorable shear profile in the lower 3
kilometers of the atmosphere. Then, later in the day, a fast moving squall
line will move across the state with potential for damaging straight line
winds. The primary severe weather threat will come from about 10:00 this
morning until 7:00 this evening. SPC maintains a moderate risk of severe
weather for areas along and south of I-20, or south of a line from
Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston.

Needless to say, this will be a day to be close to a good source of severe
weather information in the event warnings are needed. For school
administrators, we prefer that schools remain open today; a high percentage
of children in rural Alabama live in mobile homes, so when schools close
early due to severe weather potential those kids go home to the worst
possible place. There is, of course, the possibility that some schools might
have to hold children longer than normal if severe weather is ongoing at
3:00, but we would sure prefer for the kids to be in a safe school building.
Businesses also might consider reviewing their severe weather plan this
morning.

BLUSTERY TOMORROW: The storms will end early tonight, and much colder air
arrives tomorrow. Looks like we will hold in the 40s much of the day with a
cloudy sky, and some risk of a little light rain or drizzle during the
morning hours.
Sunshine finally returns in full force on Friday as the mercury rises to
near 60 degrees. At this point the weather looks excellent on Saturday for
the Iron Bowl game in Tuscaloosa; the sky should be partly to mostly sunny
with a kickoff temperature in the low to mid 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Another surge of colder air moves into the state early next week;
for now we don't expect any significant precipitation with that cold air
surge. The weather for the rest of the week looks generally cool and dry,
although some light rain could show up by the end of next week. No major
storm systems expected here next week, although a big storm could form on
the mid-Atlantic coast by Wednesday, possibly causing major airport delays
for places like Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia on the day before
Thanksgiving.

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Laredo, Texas with 90
degrees, while in Alaska the cold spot was the community of Eagle with a
bitter cold 39 degrees below zero.
