...More Cold Weather Ahead...

The Arctic Oscillation is a pressure pattern at the northern latitudes. It has a positive and a negative phase. When it is positive, much of the United States east of the Rockies is warmer than normal. When it is negative, colder air is able to dive deep into the eastern U.S. The AO went negative in early December, and it is expected to be off the scale on the negative side between now and the first week of January. Combining this with an El Nino pattern presents some interesting possibilities for wintry precipitation over the eastern U.S., including the Deep South. It will be interesting times in the old weather office over the next two weeks.

DRY THROUGH TUESDAY: A few high clouds will stream across the area today thanks to the upper low over the Great Lakes. Temperatures will be similar to yesterday, but maybe a degree or two warmer with a little more sunshine. A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive tonight, holding Monday's readings to the lower and middle 40s, despite near total sunshine. Expect solid freezes Monday and Tuesday morning, with lows well down into the 20s. Tuesday will feature partly cloudy skies with highs around 50.

MID WEEK SYSTEM: By Tuesday, a surface low will develop along the Texas coast in response to an approaching trough. Clouds will spread into Alabama Tuesday night, but temperatures by morning will be near or below freezing. Precipitation will start spreading into the state during the early morning hours. It may start out as sleet or a brief period of light freezing rain before changing to rain during the day. Rainfall amounts over Central Alabama will average around an inch before it ends Wednesday night.

NEW YEAR'S: Colder air will spread into Alabama behind the departing low, but the upper trough will keep our upper winds out of the southwest. Disturbances on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will cause occasional snow showers. Moisture amounts will be low, so it is too early to tell if there will be any measurable snow. But that possibility is on the table. We will be watching.

VERY COLD: By Saturday morning, lows will be in the lower 20s on average, with the normally colder spots dropping into the teens. Sunday morning lows will be even a degree or two colder.

WEATHERBRAINS: We will have some exciting announcements in the next week or so about upcoming guests. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An unusual summer storm packing winds of cyclone magnitude struck the 115 sailboats of the famed Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Six sailors died and 55 had to be rescued in a heroic air and sea effort that included night helicopter sorties to pull people out of the water. Storm warnings had been issued for the race participants, but pressure caused officials to allow the race to begin on time. Computer models did not have the resolution to show the full intensity of the storm's hurricane force winds and 30 foot seas. Families of the victims blamed the meteorologists and race officials for not intervening. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.

...Interesting Forecasts Ahead...

An active weather pattern over much of the United States will lead to lots of uncertainty in the forecasting department over the next ten days, including a couple of close calls in winter weather arena.

MAP WALL: In the days before powerful computers, one wall of most weather offices was dedicated to weather maps. They were grouped and hung up pegboard. It was a lot of effort to maintain and consumed quite a bit of paper, but it allowed forecasters to quickly peruse the current situation and flip back through past versions of the same map.

ON THOSE WEATHER MAPS: We see our huge upper low centered over the Great Lakes region. That low dominates much of the country today. We find ourselves on the southeastern side of the low, giving us a strong southwesterly flow aloft. That flow has been contaminated with lots of high clouds today, filtering the sun. Surface lows are located near the upper low and along the Atlantic Coast. Surface high pressure is over the Rockies. High pressure near Panama City, Florida is influencing our weather, giving us calm, stable conditions at the surface. That high ridges back to the west all the way into Texas. Along the south side of the high, moisture is pooling over the western Gulf and is getting pushed into South Texas, where showers were falling along the Rio Grande.

CENTRAL ALABAMA FORECAST: We will continue to see filtered sunshine through the afternoon thanks to that dirty southwesterly flow aloft. Afternoon readings will top out in the upper 40s. Lows tonight will drop to near freezing on average. The higher clouds will shift a little further southeast tomorrow, with more sunshine on tap for Central Alabama. Highs tomorrow will top out near 50 degrees. A reinforcing shot of colder air will arrive tomorrow night and most areas will be below freezing by Monday morning. Monday and Tuesday should be partly cloudy, dry and cool. By Tuesday, a surface low will be developing near Brownsville. This low will travel along the Gulf Coast, spreading precipitation into Alabama late Tuesday night. It will begin as sleet or snow likely, changing over to rain during the day. The good news is that the initial precipitation will be light. Rain will be likely Wednesday into Wednesday night, ending by Thursday morning. Colder air will spill into Alabama behind the low. The mean trough will stay to our west, occasionally spitting disturbances out into the colder air, possibly giving a chance of snow flurries on New Year's Day. The weekend should be cold and dry.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, we looked back on the remarkable career of long time Storm Prediction center Director Joe Schaefer as he approaches retirement at the end of the month. We heard from Todd Foisy of the National Weather Service Anchorage and learned about the show they produce for Alaskan Public Television. Joe Bastardi, the Long Ranger, from Accu-Weather also was on this week. He is never at a loss for an opinion! Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Severe snow and ice storm hit the Pacific Northwest. Trees and power lines fell under the weight of the ice. Over 160,000 residents of Portland, OR were without power at the height of the storm, including the airport, which was clogged with holiday travelers. Many flights were cancelled in Seattle due to a thick coating of ice on the planes. The precipitation started as snow in Seattle and up to 7 inches fell before it changed over to freezing rain. A moist Pacific flow from the southwest flowing over a shallow layer of cold air being brought in by north winds at the surface resulted snow and freezing rain. ...El Nino Winter...

Nothing to spice up the Boss' vacation week like a strongly negative Arctic Oscillation and an El Nino with an active southern branch of the jet stream. There will be some interesting forecasts before we get to 2010. Strap in and let's give 'er a whirl.

WE ARE IN AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN: A deep trough over the eastern U.S. means a cold and stormy pattern over the eastern half of the company. The pattern will flatten out by Monday, only to reamplify to our west by Tuesday night. This will spread rain and storms back into Alabama by early Wednesday morning. Rain and storms will increase through the day and as wind fields intensify Wednesday evening, severe weather will be a real possibility. Instability levels will be the questions, as is often the case with these winter events. Notice I said winter events, as the winter solstice will occur Monday morning. Rainfall could again be heavy, increasing our rainfall surplus even further.

FOLLOWED BY A LITTLE SNOW? As a big bowling ball of an upper low sets up to the north of Alabama on Christmas Eve, colder air will flow into the state on strong northwesterly winds. There could be a little light rain during the day, and the precipitation could change over to light snow over North Alabama by Christmas. Snow flurries will be likely through the day Friday.
Could this produce the first White Christmas in Alabama history? More about Alabama's White Christmas history on AlabamaWX.com.

WEATHERBRAINS: A special Christmas present was in your stocking last night? Did you download it yet? It's episode 205 of WeatherBrains, with retiring Strom Prediction Center Director Joe Schaefer. He gave us thirty interesting minutes Tuesday evening from his home in Norman. Our next show will on Tuesday, January 5th, when Hannah Bayman of the BBC will join the crew. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19 inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

===================================================================

...Finally A Dry Day...

A CHILLY CHRISTMAS: Temperatures will struggle to reach the 40s across Alabama on this Christmas afternoon. We even had a few snow flurries at scattered locations over about the northern third of the state—most of the flakes were real small.

The clouds should mostly move out of the area tonight paving the way for a widespread freeze. By morning we are calling for an average low of 27 across Central Alabama, but surely some of the North Alabama valley locations will be several degrees colder. Saturday should be mostly sunshine and a few degrees warmer in the afternoon.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Starting Saturday, we should have 4 or 5 dry days in a row. That will be nice because the entire state is waterlogged. All of that rain yesterday amounted to well over 1 inch in almost every part of the state. High temperatures will recover to the upper 40s Sunday and Monday and maybe to 50 Tuesday afternoon. However, nights will be cold with mid and upper 20s Monday morning and Tuesday morning.

RAIN SCORECARD: That 1.47 inches of rain at Birmingham Airport overnight swelled the total for December to almost 6 inches and for the year-to-date an amazing 71.49 inches. This is a remarkable surplus of 18.58 inches. All of that is not good news. A story in The Birmingham News this morning advised that 66 of the 67 counties in Alabama had been declared a disaster area by the Department of Agriculture. This is because of so much damage to crops from a very wet year. So our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, who furnishes us with most of our rain, can sometimes let us down.

TREMENDOUS SNOW PACK: It is still early in the winter and we do not know what January and February will throw at us. This morning the Daily Snow Survey by the NWS showed 63% of the lower 48 with a snow cover. Rather unusual for this early in the winter and it is also the most so far this season. The blanket of snow is solid from the north half of Texas all the way to the Canadian border. All of the Great Lakes area and the Upper Midwest are also covered. In the East, the snow is solid from Western North Carolina all the way to Maine.

ROAMING: Oklahoma was one of the hardest hit states by blizzard conditions yesterday. At one time, they were under a state of emergency with all interstates in the Oklahoma City area closed. Temperature extremes in the last 24 hours show 81 at a number of South Florida locations yesterday to lows this morning of 25 below zero at Jordan, Montana and 22 below at Arctic Village, Alaska.

A NOTE OF THANKS: I sure want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and sincere thanks for reading and using our daily weather material. I have received dozens of good wishes including wishing Little Miss Molly a Merry Christmas. I could not be more thankful for the people in our weather group that I am a part of. They are professionals and easy to work with. I would not have it any other way. Let us not forget for a minute to pray for our military forces in far flung danger spots and for sure their families back home.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly begged like crazy for one of my sausage balls this morning. She pounded my leg with her little paws and when I saw her little eyes I almost cried. I petitioned the majority owner to let me give her just one, but I was denied. We will have a houseful of folks this afternoon and for the second time in 3 days, Molly will be on the move almost constantly trying to stay out of the way of grandkids who like to chase her. Life goes on—a bit hectic at times.

...Merry Christmas!...

SANTA LEAVES COLDER AIR FOR ALABAMA: In the wake of last night's wind and rain, much colder air blows into Alabama on this Christmas morning with a stiff west wind and lingering clouds. There is a chance we could actually see a few snow flurries this morning over the northern third of the state as energy rotates around the big upper storm northwest of Alabama. The best chance of flurries will be north of Birmingham, and no significant accumulation is expected. Temperatures will hover around the 40 degree mark all day, and the wind will make it feel colder.

REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Dry and chilly weather is the story tomorrow and Sunday for this part of the state, with highs only in the low to mid 40s. Clouds will increase tomorrow night and Sunday as a disturbance passes to the south; any rain with that feature should be confined to the southern quarter of Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: An active pattern continues. For now we look dry Monday through Wednesday, but another storm system will come into play toward the end of the week. This system looks more like a traditional Gulf of Mexico low, so there is some risk of wintry precipitation on the northern flank of the system, but it is way too early to be specific. A shot of much colder air should follow at some point over the first weekend of 2010. Computer models are going to have a very hard time with this pattern, so forecast confidence in anything beyond 48 hours will be relatively low.

HISTORIC PRE-CHRISTMAS SNOW: A blizzard was the big story yesterday across much of Oklahoma; Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City measured 14 inches, and winds gusted to almost hurricane force at times during the peak of the storm. All Interstate highways in Oklahoma City were closed for about 8 hours yesterday and last night, and similar conditions were experienced later in Tulsa. Thousands are without power this morning. Snow will continue today across parts of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Weather Misery For Milllions...

UNPLEASANT CHRISTMAS WEATHER: Strong SE winds were blowing across Alabama this afternoon. They were gusting over 40 mph, especially on the ridges. The NWS/Huntsville issued a High Wind Warning for the Tennessee Valley area including Cullman County northward. Winds on some of the ridges could exceed 60 mph.

The ground should be wet and soft to deeper levels than usual, so this will allow some trees to come crashing down during the stronger gusts. This is especially true on ridges. It might be wise to protect outdoor Christmas decorations and use caution driving. The wind will not behave until a line of showers and thunderstorms come across the area this evening and overnight. That line of activity will also lead much colder air into the state.

SEVERE WEATHER? Cannot rule out a few severe thunderstorms in this area, but the better chance will be over the south half of the state. Several SW Alabama counties were already under a Tornado Watch this afternoon, part of a much larger watch that affected most of Central and South Mississippi.

CHRISTMAS DAY IN ALABAMA: Not a pleasant day for outdoor activity, but the wind will be much lighter during the day. Even so, the wind speed will average between 10 and 20 mph along with some stronger gusts. By daybreak the temperatures should be around 38, but the wind will make it feel a lot colder. There could even be a few snow flurries over the extreme north, mainly during the morning. The old thermometer is going to have a real struggle tomorrow to go anywhere. We are using 43 for the high for the day.

BEYOND CHRISTMAS: A dry, but cold, weekend is ahead and we do not expect any additional rain through about Tuesday. Early morning lows will be in the mid to upper 20s and afternoon highs in the 40s all the way through Tuesday.

THE MISERABLE MIDWEST: Not just that area, mind you, but very bad weather covers a huge part of the Central USA all the way from North Texas to the Canadian border. In numerous states, every county is under some type of winter weather advisory or warning. This includes some blizzard warnings in the upper part of the Plains States. Howling winds and blowing and drifting snow is the order of the day. The same intense low-pressure area that is mistreating Alabama is also causing that wintry weather to the north. The low was over Arkansas and Louisiana at midday. It will swing northward to north of St. Louis by daybreak and then to Iowa by Friday evening.

The coldest temperature this morning was 21 below zero at Glasgow, Montana and 24 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska. An amazing 58% of the lower 48 has a snow cover today. Little Rock got 6.29 inches of rain overnight. Several tornadoes touched down today in Louisiana. Two were on the ground near Crowley with damage to homes and 5 to 6 homes were damaged by another tornado at Farmerville.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our little home was crowded last night and Little Miss Molly did not know what to do. We had grandkids and great grandkids and kids over for the annual Christmas cookie decoration. The great grandkids, naturally, were quite noisy. They were chasing Molly and I really believe she walked or ran for several miles inside the house during the time they were here. She jumped up in my lap once for protection. Much of that interrupted her evening naptime. Today she is passed out on the couch and really catching up on rest and sleep. There will be a repeat of all that tomorrow. Life goes on—not always smoothly.

...High WInd and Heavy Rain...

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES: An vigorous pre-Christmas storm system is bring some nasty weather to much of the nation this morning, and here in Alabama the focus will be on wind and rain later today and tonight.

Strong pressure gradient winds, not related to thunderstorms, will dramatically increase across the state this afternoon. Southeast winds will average 20 to 40 mph, with higher gusts. It is likely that winds will gust to over 50 mph on the ridges, since we expect winds just a few thousand feet off the ground to be in the 80 to 90 mph range. The wind could be sufficient to bring down trees and power lines, and you need to secure Christmas decorations, or anything else that might fly away. Santa will need to hang on to his hat tonight.

HOW MUCH RAIN? We expect general rains of 1 to 2 inches statewide, with some spots possibly getting up to 3 inches. There could be some localized flooding problems, especially over the northern half of the state.

SEVERE WEATHER? The greatest chance of severe thunderstorms in Alabama later today and tonight will be south of a line from Butler to Greenville to Dothan; the instability values are not expected to be enough to bring a major severe weather threat to North Alabama, but the dynamics with this system are very impressive, and storms will have to be monitored closely this afternoon and tonight. The best chance of strong storms will come from about 3:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight tonight.

CHRISTMAS CHILL: The rain should end across our state late tonight, and much colder air will flood the state tomorrow on Christmas Day with a brisk north wind. Looks like temperatures will hold in the 38 to 43 degree range much of the day, with clouds lingering through at least the morning. Some folks up in the Tennessee Valley might see a few flurries tomorrow morning, but moisture will be very shallow by then. The sun could break through at times during the day.

The cold air stays in place over the weekend; we expect a mix of sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with highs only in the low to mid 40s. The next storm system to impact Alabama is due in here around Wednesday of next week; too early to determine if there will be any significant risk of wintry precipitation over North Alabama. We keep a close eye on it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS: While we will continue to produce our weather products today and tomorrow (the weather never shuts down, you know), we know that many of you will be "off the grid" with your family. I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish you and our family a peaceful, blessed, and powerful Christmas. This is truly the most wonderful time of the year; cherish the moments. We appreciate your support and friendship, and look forward to a great 2010!

...Fast-Moving Weather...

AN AWESOME WEATHER MAP: Looking at the old weather map all morning until my eyes were almost bloodshot. It is an awesome map—one of the most unusual that I have seen lately. Why would I say that? Because every county in these states has some type of weather advisory or warning, including freezing rain, sleet, snow and blizzard conditions. Those states are Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Numerous other counties in other states, but not all.

HOW DOES ALABAMA RELATE TO THIS: No wintry weather, but we will have plenty of action and Christmas Day is going to be windy and cold. The intense low-pressure area is taking shape west of Alabama. It will become an intense low during the day tomorrow. It will also pull a cold front across Alabama at some point Thursday night. Due to the intensity of the low and the approaching front, it will become very windy. We are calling for 15-35 mph winds for tomorrow, especially later in the day. As the front approaches, gusts could easily exceed 40 mph and possibly even 50 mph (or stronger) along the ridges. This will bring down some trees, which in turn may bring down some power lines. Remember, the ground should be soft quite a few inches down from all of our rain. This will make it easier for the trees to be uprooted.

Showers will move in some tonight, but the main show will be Thursday and Thursday night. The showers should become numerous by Thursday afternoon along with some thunderstorms. We believe we can get by without a severe weather threat, however the Storm Prediction Center does have extreme South and SW Alabama under a Slight Risk for tomorrow, including places like Mobile, Brewton, Opp and Dothan as well as the NW Florida Panhandle.

There is an excellent chance that here in Central Alabama we will get about 2 inches of rain from this storm system. If that happens, it will send the total for the year in Birmingham over 72 inches and the surplus for the year to nearly 20 inches!

LOOKING OUT ACROSS NORTH AMERICA: I get bug-eyed looking at all the problems. One bit of good news. Places like Washington, Philadelphia and New York will miss this big winter storm. Travel problems will become widespread through the Central Plains and Midwest. Remember, it takes only a small amount of rain, if the temperature is below freezing, to make you spin out. Out in the Arizona Desert, the wind today was running only 5-10 mph, which was great news after the tragic multi-car pileup in a huge dust storm along I-10 yesterday. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 10 below zero at Doe Lake, Michigan; coldest in Alaska was 24 below at Ft. Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly amazes me. When we walked this morning, she must have seen the Community Rabbit (CR) dive under a nearby fence or at least smelled his tracks. She rushed straight to that wooden fence, stuck her head and part of her body under the fence and all I could see was her rear end and swishing tail. On our way back, she sniffed the entire length of the fence and peeped under the fence hoping to see the rabbit. Amazingly, she still remembers the part of the hedgerow where the Community Rabbit (CR) came rushing out and brushed the top of her head. The ensuing race looked like two kangaroos galloping across the Australian countryside. We had a wonderful ballgame late last night and I plan another big game this afternoon. She is back to normal. Life goes on.

...Wet Tomorrow; Colder Christmas Day...

BIG PRE-CHRISTMAS SOAKING: A major storm system will bring inclement weather to much of the nation during the next 48 hours, but the main impact of the storm will remain west of the state today. Around Alabama, we expect the day to be mostly cloudy, with just a few scattered showers this afternoon and tonight, mainly over the northwest counties of the state. Temperatures should top out in the 57 to 61 degree range this afternoon with an increasing southeast breeze.

TO THE WEST: A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and tonight over parts of East Texas, East Oklahoma, West Arkansas, and much of Louisiana as moist, unstable air flows northward into the warm sector of the big storm.

TO THE NORTH: A major snowstorm/blizzard will crank up tonight and tomorrow over the nation's heartland; some of the hardest hit states will include Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, where some places could see over one foot of snow with winds gusting over 50 mph at times, making for almost white-out conditions. Travel will be difficult, if not impossible.

HERE IN ALABAMA: Winds will increase dramatically tomorrow, out of the southeast at 15 to 30 mph with higher gusts on the ridgetops. And, rain and storms will increase statewide, especially tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. For now the instability values look very marginal, so we don't expect a major severe weather threat, but a strong storm cannot be ruled out. The rain could be heavy at times, and we are projecting rain totals of 1 to 2 inches statewide, with isolated amounts to 3 inches possible. The heaviest and most widespread rain is likely from about 1:00 p.m. tomorrow through 1:00 a.m. Friday.

CHRISTMAS CHILL: Look for a sharp change to colder weather on Friday; most likely we will begin the day with temperatures around 50 degrees at daybreak, but they should fall steadily, reaching the low 40s by afternoon with lingering clouds and a chilly north wind. The weekend will remain cold, with cloudy periods and a high only in the mid 40s both Saturday and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: While we stay dry on Monday and Tuesday, a low pressure center coming out of the Gulf of Mexico will bring rain back into the Deep South on Wednesday, and this system seems to be a position to bring some threat of wintry weather on the northern periphery of the precipitation. Way too early to determine if and where will happen, but something we will be watching in coming days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: An epic cold wave was diving south to the Gulf Coast. 122 cities across the central and eastern United States reported record low temperatures for the date. 41 of the cities also record lows for the month of December, some which had only been set the day before. Birmingham's official low was 1 degree above zero.

...Busy, Busy Weather People...

DECEMBER ACTION GOES ON: Never dull moments in most weather offices across the USA in recent days and numerous forecasters are on their toes again for a major storm developing in the West and Central USA. It will cause a lot of problems over a wide area.

HOW DOES ALABAMA FIT IN: We are in the mix, but fortunately we will be on the relatively warm side of this big storm complex. As a result, we should see the old backyard thermometer rise to about 60 Wednesday and Thursday only to be jerked back to reality on Christmas Day and over the weekend. The action, not only here in Alabama, but in a wide area is based around a major storm system developing over the Southwest. It will move NE and intensify by the time it gets to the center part of the country. By late tomorrow, the low will get into the Central Plains and it should be centered south of St. Louis late Thursday, to near Des Moines by Friday morning and finally to Green Bay, Wisconsin by late Saturday. It should be a deep low-pressure area by that time.

Here in Alabama, our main effect and the worst weather will be showers and thunderstorms becoming numerous Thursday afternoon and Thursday night. A few of those storms could be strong, but evidence seems to point to a lesser risk of any severe storms that we earlier expected. Rain amounts will be locally heavy Thursday and Thursday night. We should get over an inch here in Central Alabama. The wind will be unusually strong Thursday, not necessarily because a of thunderstorm. Would not be surprised to seem some gusts over 30 mph, especially on the ridges.

CHRISTMAS DAY IN ALABAMA: Fortunately we expect calmer weather on Friday, but clouds should hang tough. It will be windy and colder with temperatures staying in the 40s all day. Some leftover light rain should end early. Saturday we will at least have partial sunshine, lighter winds, but still rather cool.

HOWLING DUSTSTORM: Strong winds over the Desert Southwest were kicking up big clouds of dust this morning, especially across Southern Arizona. On I-10 near Casa Grande, there was a massive pileup due to the very poor visibility in the dust. The chain reaction included more than 20 vehicles. Four persons were killed and there were numerous injuries.

USA NOTES: That vicious storm that is under development in the Southwest will dump very heavy snow over parts of the Rockies, across the Plains and into the Midwest. There will be blowing and drifting snow and there will be major travel problems. The coldest temperature in the USA this morning was 14 below at Spincich Lake, Michigan and 27 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With at least two rabbits now living in our community and two or three cats (one of the casts is a neighbour), I have to be exceedingly careful the minute I step out the door with Little Miss Molly for our daily walks. I almost lost her this morning. Only three steps out the backdoor, she apparently saw the cat disappear into the hedgerow or she smelled tracks right by our backdoor. She took off like a shuttle launch. She almost jerked the leash out of my hand. She would have been in Chattanooga before I could have caught her. Life goes on—fast-moving at times.

...Christmas Eve Storms; Then Colder...

STORMS BEFORE CHRISTMAS: Very active and changeable weather continues for the Deep South and much of the nation as we approach Christmas Day. Today, we are in-between storm systems, so another nice day is likely with ample sunshine, and a comfortable high close to 60 degrees this afternoon. Clouds will increase tonight in advance of a pre-Christmas storm system that will impact much of the nation with a variety of cold weather.

WHITE CHRISTMAS? You bet, if you are in states like Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. In fact, blizzard conditions will likely develop across the nation's mid-section tomorrow as a deepening surface low moves from the Texas Panhandle to North Missouri. Of course, we are south of this surface low, meaning Alabama will be in the warm sector. We believe most of the showers and storms will remain west of Alabama tomorrow, although our sky will be mostly cloudy with an increasing south breeze. We note that the Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe thunderstorms tomorrow for much of Arkansas and Louisiana.

STORMY CHRISTMAS EVE: The most organized round of showers and storms seems likely for our state Thursday night, generally in the period from 6:00 p.m. Thursday through 6:00 a.m. Friday. Rainfall totals of at least one inch are likely, with isolated amounts to two inches, which opens the door for some isolated flooding problems. We will also have some risk of strong thunderstorms, but the instability values will be rather marginal, so hopefully that will prevent a major issue with severe weather.

COLDER AIR ARRIVES IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS: In the wake of the showers and storms, we expect a sharp change to colder weather on Christmas Day. Looks like a day with temperatures going the wrong way; we could be close to 50 degrees at daybreak Friday, but temperatures will likely fall through the 40s during the day, perhaps reaching the 30s by late afternoon. Clouds will linger, but most of the rain should be east of Alabama at daybreak when the kids are up and opening those presents.

REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Cold air will stay in place through Saturday and Sunday. Clouds will stick around as well, and a few snow flurries are not totally out of the question with highs only in the 40 to 45 degree range. Some communities north of Birmingham will have a hard time getting of the 30s both days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Incredible cold across the United States. 135 cities broke their record lows for the date, including 35 that set record lows for the entire month of December. It was 23 below zero at Kansas City, and down here in Birmingham the low was 4 degrees above zero. The temperature the following day, December 23, 1989, dropped to 1 degree. Many ponds were frozen over completely across North Alabama, and some kids actually enjoyed ice skating in Alabama at Christmas time.

...Milder Afternoons...

DECEMBER STAYING ACTIVE: As of today, we are 21 days into winter. Yes, I know, the official beginning of winter was today. We pay no attention to that, because in this part of the world, December, January and February are climatologically suited to call winter. Actually, our shortest day is tomorrow, because of the angle of the sun, but it is our shortest day by a fraction of a minute.

Enough of all that—it is time to get down to the things that matter. We will go through some significant weather changes as the week goes on, including a fairly stormy Christmas Eve followed by much colder weather on Christmas Day. No snow expected, but we will get showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and a few of those storms could be strong. Starting tomorrow, we expect three days in a row with high temperatures around 60, so that should be good for your Christmas shopping. A few showers will show up Wednesday afternoon, but the main showers and a few thunderstorms will be on Thursday.

THE WEATHER MAPS: A new significant low-pressure area will start developing in the Southern Plains tomorrow. By Christmas Day it should wind up into a powerful low-pressure area centered near Tulsa or Wichita. By Christmas Eve, the intense low will be over Iowa and by Saturday over Upper Michigan. This is much different from our previous low-pressure area that took a more eastern track across North Florida and up the East Coast. It made history with snow amounts all the way from East Tennessee and North Carolina to New England. Here in Alabama, we will be on the warm side of the next system and high temperatures will shoot for 60 three days in a row. By Friday morning, the cold front will have moved through most of Alabama bringing our sharp change to colder. By that time, almost all of the precipitation will be far north of Alabama, but there could be a few snowflakes across our extreme northern counties Christmas Day.

MORNING LOWS: Here are just a few examples of the cold temperatures this morning. In NE Alabama, some of the frost looked like snow.

20 Muscadine

21 Scrougeout (heavy frost looked like snow)

22 McCalla, Pinson, Lafayette

24 West Blocton, Valley Head, Ft. Payne

25 Russellville, Moulton, Centreville, Jasper

ROAMING THE GREAT USA: 52% of the lower 48 had a blanket of snow this morning extending all the way from East Tennessee to Maine. On Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains, 32 inches of snow on the ground this morning and 3 inches in Gatlinburg. One of the heaviest amounts was in the high country of the west with 288 inches at Alpine Meadows, California. Cold temperatures this morning included 8 below zero at Gunnison, Colorado and 33 below at Arctic Village, Alaska. How about Mt. Washington, New Hampshire with a temperature of 5, zero visibility and freezing fog and wind gusts to 60 mph!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I realize fully that the love of my fellow man and my family have to be the greatest of all, but my love for my little dog sure does rank very high. That little 9-pound creature is an ultra active bundle of hair, skin, bones, feet and a constantly wagging tail. But she came to live with us and immediately took over the whole place. We fell for her hook, line and sinker. She is such an important part of our lives that she takes up much of our conversation time and we cannot help but stop and give her a belly rub every time we walk through the house. Yesterday I took her on a very long walk and let her be the director. I did not think she was ever going to bring me home, but she had an absolute blast. Life goes on.

...Winter Starts Today...

Winter begins officially begins at 1:47 p.m. CST today. Of course, we weather humans tend to call the first of December the start of winter. The period from December 1 – February 28th tends to more accurately encompass the coldest months of the year.

ACTIVE PATTERN CONTINUES: A fairly zonal, or west to flat east to west flow has developed across much of the United States today in the wake of the departing East Coast storm. This will give us a couple of days of benign weather across Alabama. Expect a good deal of sunshine today and tomorrow, with highs in the 50s to near 60. Lows tonight will drop to near freezing. By tomorrow night, increasing southerly winds will mean slightly warmer temperatures and overnight lows generally in the lower 40s. Clouds will also thicken and it should be cloudy by Wednesday morning. Rain should move into West Alabama before lunch as moisture surges northward. Meanwhile, a big trough will set up over the nation's midsection. This pattern will lock into place for a few days, meaning that things will evolve more slowly than we earlier thought.

STRONG STORMS FOR CHRISTMAS EVE: It will become windy Wednesday night into Thursday morning as strong low pressure develops to the west of Alabama. It will be powered by a strong upper level disturbance that will rotate trough the Central U.S. trough. This low will become quite intense as it lifts into Missouri on Christmas Eve morning. An area of rain and thunderstorms will rotate into the state Thursday afternoon. Instabilities will be marginal again, but upper wind fields will be strong, and this could translate into a chance of severe weather. Rainfall totals should average between 1 and 2 inches across Alabama by Friday, with heavier amounts over western sections of the state.

CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND: Friday looks windy and chilly with a gusty west wind, steady or falling temperatures and a lot of light rain. By Saturday morning, temperatures will be near freezing, and they won't get much warmer during the day with a continued strong westerly wind. Sunday should be sunny and cold as well. It looks like January will get off to a cold and wet start with a couple of wet weather systems between the 31st and 3rd.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the weekly netcast that's all about weather. People all over the world are discovering that this is the place to feed their interest in weather. Have you subscribed on iTunes? It's free. Have you told your friends? The sixty minute show is hosted by our very own James Spann. The cast of characters includes J.B. Elliott, Brian Peters, Kevin Selle, sometimes Tim Coleman and your humble Guest Booking Office, little 'ol me. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A major crop killing freeze between the 21st and 25th in California's San Joaquin Valley caused tremndous damage to orange production. Temperatures remained at or below 28 degrees for as much as 50 hours during the period, causing extensive damage to the lemon and orange crops. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Sunshine Returns...

On the weather maps this afternoon, we find a trough over the eastern United States with a hurricane strength nor-easter low east of Cape Cod. This low was responsible for the record setting snows along the Atlantic Seaboard. This trough is keeping Alabama in a cool northwesterly flow. Clouds hung tough in this northwesterly flow yesterday, but those low clouds were rapidly eroding from the southwest this morning. They were slowest to break up over the Tennessee Valley, where mostly cloudy continues prevailed at early afternoon. A ridge extends over the Rockies, with another storm system along the West Coast.

DRY MONDAY AND TUESDAY: The ridge will slide into place over the Mississippi Valley by tomorrow. Surface high pressure will slide to our east and southerly winds will return. This will lead to warming temperatures for Monday and Tuesday, when highs will be in the middle and upper 50s. By Tuesday night, the western trough will spin up low pressure to the west of Alabama. This low will be out next weather maker.

STRONG STORMS/COLDER: An outbreak of severe weather is likely on Wednesday to the west of Alabama over Mississippi and the Arklatex. The models have trended slower and slower with the robust little low pressure system that will be over the Missouri Bootheel by late afternoon Wednesday. Showers and storms will spread into Alabama by late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, but it may be that the main line of storms does not cross the state until Thursday. We will wait for a couple of more model runs before altering the timing in the forecast, but the slower movement will mean some decent rainfall totals. Much of the area will see between 1.25-2 inches of rain from this system, heavier on the western side of the state. Colder air will spread into the state after the frontal passage. Snow flurries now don't look likely for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, except perhaps over western Tennessee. Can't rule them out, but they don't look likely.

YEAR IN REVIEW: I will be working on my top ten lists for 2009 and the decade over the next couple of weeks. You can help. Give me your top Alabama, U.S. and International weather events for 2009 and the decade (2000-09) at http://www.alabamawx.com/?p=25461.

WEATHERBRAINS: Winter storm preparedness is the theme for Monday night's show. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and you could win a copy of Eric Pinder's new book: Life at the Top, about life at the Mount Washington Observatory.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Record cold in Florida. Record cold afternoon high temperatures were set at Miami with 55 degrees and 58 degrees at Key West. The temperature struggled to reach 44 degrees at Tampa, shattering the minimum record high temperature for the date, and coming close to the all-time coolest high temperature for the Tampa area of 38, set on Christmas day in 1983.
