...Merry Christmas!...
SANTA LEAVES COLDER AIR FOR ALABAMA: In the wake of last night's wind and rain, much colder air blows into Alabama on this Christmas morning with a stiff west wind and lingering clouds. There is a chance we could actually see a few snow flurries this morning over the northern third of the state as energy rotates around the big upper storm northwest of Alabama. The best chance of flurries will be north of Birmingham, and no significant accumulation is expected. Temperatures will hover around the 40 degree mark all day, and the wind will make it feel colder.
REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Dry and chilly weather is the story tomorrow and Sunday for this part of the state, with highs only in the low to mid 40s. Clouds will increase tomorrow night and Sunday as a disturbance passes to the south; any rain with that feature should be confined to the southern quarter of Alabama.
NEXT WEEK: An active pattern continues. For now we look dry Monday through Wednesday, but another storm system will come into play toward the end of the week. This system looks more like a traditional Gulf of Mexico low, so there is some risk of wintry precipitation on the northern flank of the system, but it is way too early to be specific. A shot of much colder air should follow at some point over the first weekend of 2010. Computer models are going to have a very hard time with this pattern, so forecast confidence in anything beyond 48 hours will be relatively low.
HISTORIC PRE-CHRISTMAS SNOW: A blizzard was the big story yesterday across much of Oklahoma; Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City measured 14 inches, and winds gusted to almost hurricane force at times during the peak of the storm. All Interstate highways in Oklahoma City were closed for about 8 hours yesterday and last night, and similar conditions were experienced later in Tulsa. Thousands are without power this morning. Snow will continue today across parts of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.
WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.
