...Christmas Eve Storms; Then Colder...

STORMS BEFORE CHRISTMAS: Very active and changeable weather continues for the Deep South and much of the nation as we approach Christmas Day. Today, we are in-between storm systems, so another nice day is likely with ample sunshine, and a comfortable high close to 60 degrees this afternoon. Clouds will increase tonight in advance of a pre-Christmas storm system that will impact much of the nation with a variety of cold weather.

WHITE CHRISTMAS? You bet, if you are in states like Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. In fact, blizzard conditions will likely develop across the nation's mid-section tomorrow as a deepening surface low moves from the Texas Panhandle to North Missouri. Of course, we are south of this surface low, meaning Alabama will be in the warm sector. We believe most of the showers and storms will remain west of Alabama tomorrow, although our sky will be mostly cloudy with an increasing south breeze. We note that the Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe thunderstorms tomorrow for much of Arkansas and Louisiana.

STORMY CHRISTMAS EVE: The most organized round of showers and storms seems likely for our state Thursday night, generally in the period from 6:00 p.m. Thursday through 6:00 a.m. Friday. Rainfall totals of at least one inch are likely, with isolated amounts to two inches, which opens the door for some isolated flooding problems. We will also have some risk of strong thunderstorms, but the instability values will be rather marginal, so hopefully that will prevent a major issue with severe weather.

COLDER AIR ARRIVES IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS: In the wake of the showers and storms, we expect a sharp change to colder weather on Christmas Day. Looks like a day with temperatures going the wrong way; we could be close to 50 degrees at daybreak Friday, but temperatures will likely fall through the 40s during the day, perhaps reaching the 30s by late afternoon. Clouds will linger, but most of the rain should be east of Alabama at daybreak when the kids are up and opening those presents.

REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Cold air will stay in place through Saturday and Sunday. Clouds will stick around as well, and a few snow flurries are not totally out of the question with highs only in the 40 to 45 degree range. Some communities north of Birmingham will have a hard time getting of the 30s both days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Incredible cold across the United States. 135 cities broke their record lows for the date, including 35 that set record lows for the entire month of December. It was 23 below zero at Kansas City, and down here in Birmingham the low was 4 degrees above zero. The temperature the following day, December 23, 1989, dropped to 1 degree. Many ponds were frozen over completely across North Alabama, and some kids actually enjoyed ice skating in Alabama at Christmas time.
